#22 - Me And An Empty House

Not Edited

Even though I was in SS2, I had never skipped a day of school in my life, except for that one day. Even when I was sick out of my mind, my mum would give me as many drugs needed and I'd be on my way.

Today I was torn. I wasn't quite sure how I was going to do it, but I had to. Today dad was meeting up with that person on the phone who I was sure was a woman.

I had school. Well technically what was stopping me was lesson. Lesson was always an obstacle, even though at times I'd love to have lesson, today I wanted a bit of freedom.

Currently standing at the bus stop infront of school I contemplated my next actions. I could either go into school and pretend I never heard my father have that call or I could go out of navy gate and get a bike straight to the cafe.

"Student!" I whirled around to spot an angry naval officer marching in my direction. With his mighty cane wielded in his hands, he crushed the grasses beneath his feet in rage. I wonder why they were always so angry?

Before getting a second thought, I took off towards navy gate, passing multiple strangers as I made my way towards the bike junction.

It wasn't quite hard finding a cheap bike and in due time I was infront of my house. I had realized that going to the cafe in a school uniform was way too attention catching, so I decided to change into something more blending.

I wasn't one of those really slow dressers and in less that the time I needed, I was dressed. My father had made the appointment by 3 and that meant I had at most 6 hours to draw out a fully functional plan.

An outfit. I needed something cute and quiet. So I dug into my wardrobe, trying on shirt after shirt until I stumbled upon my baggy red shirt that my dad gave me.

It had 'Lol' in big block letters written on it and a couple months ago I'd proclaimed it my favorite shirt. Then I started to think.

Did Joseph like red? I rarely ever saw him on red when he posted pictures, and he was always on his Blue Wey house sports wear and never Aduwo, which was bright red.

I slowly dropped the shirt onto the floor in a huff, kicking it under the bed, I made up my mind to start wearing blue clothes. Since Joseph liked blue I'd try to like what he liked incase our relationship ever worked.

After another hour, I had settled on my cute blue plaid shirt that stopped below my bum like I liked it to, black skinny jeans and my blue all stars. I picked up a black purse with one thin chain strap and shoved some money into it. I was ready.

Noticing I still had some time to chill, I settled infront of our TV. Luckily there was light and there was no way I would have put on the generator. It would be too risky.

So as I sat infront of my television watching Lady Luck on ZeeWorld, I totally let all my problems slip away as I indulged my self in the disappearance of Bhoomi and the coming of Divya.

I was so involved in the flashing big screen that I didn't how time danced around me and before I knew it, It was already 1:30.

My phone's alarm unfortunately brought me back into reality and just like that my hands started shaking. I started doubting my decision to skip school. Was I being stupid? What if a teacher noticed?

No. That wouldn't happen. I was sure of that. Shutting off the TV, I grabbed the little purse I'd chosen earlier off the coffee table and made for the door.

Seconds before I pulled it open, I heard a loud bang. I froze. The bang was followed by several other bangs before total silence. The perpetrator had retreated..

I took in a deep breath for a second and then I collapsed onto the nearest chair in a sigh. It was then I realized the heavy thump of my heart pounding against my ribs.

I placed my hand on my chest and tried relaxing. I was so close to being caught. What if I had opened the door?  Was that how easily my life would have ended? Father would have cut me into pieces.

This was a bad idea. I should have just stuck to school like the good girl I was. But now it was too late to back out, I had to go. I just had to.

60 minutes later, I placed one sneaker clad foot out of the bus I had entered before the other. I was 10 minutes early. Their meeting was by 3 and after spending God knows how long panicking, I finally got my shit together.

I tugged on the back of my plaid shirt as I walked into Central Soup. The cafe was famous for its heavenly cakes and cookies. Ironically, they never sold soups here which was quite confusing as to the name of the cafe.

I had quickly taken a seat closest to the window to see them when they arrived and then I planned to change seats after they arrive. And so I pulled out my phone and waited.

And right on time,  three on the dot. I heard the door open and then I looked up. The man before me wasn't my dad from last night. He was livelier, he was smiling, he had on one of his good day bright shirts and this goofy look that just made me happy.

It seems the separation had made things better. For dad.

I apologize to all of my readers. What some of you don't know is that I'm in ss3 and that means I'm writing MOCK,  JAMB, NECO and WAEC in a while. So I've been so busy reading physics and chemistry that I haven't had time to work on my Kolupo and Joseph chemistry. But never fear once I'm done with my exams I'll be fully here and ready for whatevers gonna happen. As for now,  enjoy the book. 😊
