Lyrically Brilliant
Since Taylor Swift has recently released a new song, I've been listening her last album all over again while waiting for the new era to finally arrive, as I knew nothing will ever feel the same ever ever again. Because we are both changing, myself and Taylor.
Listening to all of Taylor's song made me deeply realised that there are particular traits that I look for in songs, not just Taylor's songs, but music in general:
1, They should be catchy enough to stick to my head until I can't take it anymore and have to go and search for the chorus and learn it by heart;
2, They should be written well enough so that I can relate with the artist, parts of the verse should have a cinematic feel to them, and they should be able to tell whole a story;
(e.g.: "You stand with your hand on my waistline
It's a scene and we're out here in plain sight
I can hear them whisper as they pass by
It's a bad sign, bad sign."
When listening/singing/even when you are just reading it out loud, you can actually picture what is going on with the characters. The image is delivered together with the sounds that they hear ( "hear them whisper"), and there is also a narrative stating "It's a bad sign". As much as I am into movies, I love music even more, especially when the lyric is so good that it feels like I can see another movie everytime I listen to that one song.)
3, Metaphors. I freaking love metaphors. A good metaphor makes my day. I need them for my well-being.
4, During certain phases of my life I would listen to about 5 songs over and over again. And after that, I totally move on from them. But everytime I listen to them again, they remind me of what happened to me. It's a very personal experience, and sometimes I love a song so much because it happens to match so well with what I am going through in life as if it were my life story in a musical form.
I grow with music.
