A simple bet |WinterWitch|
Background: Natasha and Steve work together and are recently dating, it's amazing. Everything was perfect. The only problem was Steve had a roommate. An annoying single roommate who is ruining Natasha's mornings. So she pushes him in the right direction, but that only confuses him more.
"James Buchanan Barnes, you have the most pathetic love life of everyone I have ever met in this world and the next."
That was exactly what James was greeted by the moment he walked into the kitchen of Steve's apartment, which he was staying until he could find a place for himself. This was yelled at him by no other than Natasha Romanoff who was sitting in Steve's kitchen with nothing other than Steve's shirt and a pair of short Nike shorts.
"What did I ever do to earn this?" Bucky asked reaching for a mug to get some coffee.
"I have wakened up here for the last week and I'd like to have some alone time with my boyfriend," She said. "But for some odd reason, you are always here."
"Are you upset that I moved in before you?" He asked rating an eyebrow.
"Why don't you have a girlfriend Bucky?" She asked ignoring Bucky's question. "You're a good looking guy."
"Oh careful there, Steve is a very jealous person." He smirked.
"Don't flatter yourself, I have a type. Tall blonde and-"
"I really don't need to heart the rest of that." Bucky rolled his eyes. "Where is Steve anyway? He can stop this torture."
"Listen, Bucky, I personally don't think you should be single the rest of your life."
"You mean you want me out of your life?" He smirked.
"Well of course." She smiled. "How about I set you up with someone?"
"No thank you because I've met everyone at your work and I am not really fond of any of them," he said. "No offense to them." He added quickly.
"I bet you are scared." She said. "That has to be the only logical option. You are scared of commitment and finding someone who can truly make you happy."
"Me afraid? Please. Now you are just acting a bit crazy." He said. "Natasha have you ever thought that maybe I just don't want to be with anyone?"
''no" she said. "I am just saying that if you don't fix this single thing right now then you are going to be single living with Steve for the rest of your life. I don't plan on being quiet the rest of my life James," She smirked and Bucky sent him a discussed look.
"That is gross, some times I wonder how you could possibly be with Steve, he's so innocent." He said. "But back to the point, I don't need a girl."
"Because you can't get one."
"I can get one if I wanted to."
"Sure, I am sure you can." She smirked.
"I can."
"I bet you couldn't even get a girl to go on a date with you by the end of the week."
"What?" He asked. "Of course I can!" He cried out.
"Oh yeah? Prove it." She said.
"Find! I will," Bucky put down his coffee and grabbed his car keys before strutting right out the door. Natasha smirked watching the door sitting on the counter, she reached out for Bucky's untouched coffee and took a sip as the door flew back open. "I will as soon as I get dressed!"
Her plan was in motion.

Natasha's words echoed in his head, he knew deep down that he wanted to be in a relationship but he didn't know what to do. He wanted a committed relationship, one with meaning, and no was really looking for that anymore.
He decided he would go to the coffee shop down the street, considering Natasha drank all his coffee. But like seriously why did Steve need to have her sleepover every night? That boy is head over heels for her, and that really affects Bucky. Natasha is always teasing him, for some stuff that seems pointless even! He didn't know what her deal was, but he really did like her. Especially since he's never seen Steve so happy before.
Maybe that was what was getting him down. They had what he wanted. They had someone to lean on, someone to hold, someone that makes them feel special. He really wanted that. Now getting that, that was the hard part.
He waited in the small line to order his coffee with all these things running through his mind that he didn't even notice when it was his hurt to order.
"Excuse me sir!" The barista said a bit louder in hopes of getting his attention, that was when he snapped out of his thoughts and looked up at her. His cheeks were now flushed red and he nervously stepped up.
"Sorry...I am a bit distracted he said." He looked up at the Barista, meeting her eyes and was genuinely surprised. He'd never seen her here before and he was here a good amount. She had brunette hair and soft green eyes. She was smiling gently at him, and Bucky was sure he'd never seen a smile so kind before.
"Oh it's no big deal sir," She said, her voice was soft and the way she spoke reminded him of innocence. "What can I get for you today?"
"Huh?" he asked forgetting why he was here.
"Coffee?" She asked pointing to the menu. "Or perhaps a breakfast item."
"Oh no umm, I'll get coffee," He gave her his order.
"Will that be it for you?" She asked and he nodded his head, why was it so hard for him to speak to her? "What's your name?"
"James. But uh my friends call me Bucky." He said, not really knowing why he was telling her this.
"I like James," She smiled, and he smiled back. "That will $3.32 " Bucky handed her a five-dollar bill and when she went to grab it their fingers brushed and he couldn't help but smile. What in the hell was wrong with him. He didn't have a chance to ponder on his thoughts because she had handed him his change and it was time for him to leave the line.
What an utter and complete fool he was being! Why was he crushing so hard on a girl he literally just met? It wouldn't matter anyway, a girl like her is probably taken. Besides even if she wasn't there was no way they'd be looking for the same thing, fate just would make him so lucky.
The moments that passed went by so slowly, but eventually, his name was called out. James, he couldn't help but smile. Unfortuently the brunette was not the one serving him his coffee. He wanted to get to know her. He sighed grabbing his drink and took a seat at one of the empty tables.
Should he leave? Surely staying was odd. It was almost creepy, probably on the borderline of creepy. Like who waits around just to get the attention of some girl he just met. He didn't even know her name.
Sighing he went to take a sip of his drink when he noticed there was more than his name written neatly on the cup. Smiling to himself he noticed a number on the cup. He looked up towards the direction of the Barista and saw she was smiling at him, he smiled back, barely keeping himself back from waving like an idiot. What the hell is happening? He used to be great with the ladies!
At least now he had her number. But what to do with it was the question.
Deciding it was better to not stand around Bucky left the Cafe and ventured back to Steve's apartment To his dismay he opened the door to Natasha and Steve mid-make-out session on the couch, not noticing his presence.
"You know people sit on the couch." He stated simply causing the couple to pull apart.
"What are you doing here!?!?" Natasha exclaimed as Steve moved away from her.
"Nat," Steve said gently.
"Did you already give up? It hasn't even been two hours yet!" She said.
"What bet?" Steve asked.
"Oh, you don't know?" Bucky asked. "See your girlfriend here wanted me out of the house so she could have her wicked way with you and in the attempt, she told me I couldn't get a girl by the end of the week."
"Natasha that wasn't very nice."
"I am just helping him out!" She claimed. "He's always walking around here sad and depressed and it really doesn't add to the mood."
"Why don't you two just go to Natasha's apartment?" Bucky asked.
"Because my apartment doesn't have food."
"Not like you have time to eat it." He said and Steve grabbed a pillow throwing it at bucky, which he quickly dodged. "Hey, I don't know what you two have done with that pillow!"
"But you didn't answer my question Barnes, did you give up?"
"No." He said as a matter of fact. "I did not give up."
"Oh yeah? Then what poor soul did you ask out on a date."
"Well, I didn't exactly ask her out yet." He said holding the cup that had her number neatly written on it, he was trying to find the best words to explain what happened at the cafe.
"Okay," Natasha said, "What's her name?"
"I have no clue." He said, and Natasha raised an eyebrow at that and Steve held back a chuckle.
"So let me get this straight, you didn't ask her out, and you don't even know her age?" She asked as clarification. Bucky nodded his head. "What the hell do you know about her?"
"I know that she works at the cafe down the street, and I know her number."
"She gave you her number?"
"Don't act so surprised Natasha," Bucky said. "What can I say? I am a charming person."
"Yeah? Why do I find that hard to believe in so many ways?"
"Because you have trust issues." He shrugged. "Should I call her?"
"Did you like her?"
"I think so...I didn't really talk to her much but even when we did talk I really couldn't say anything." He said.
"Hmm, reminds me of someone," Natasha looked over at Steve with a smirk. "When Steve and I first met he couldn't even tell me his name without breaking out in a blushing mess. Not to mention the spilled his water all over himself when I said I'd go out with him."
"Don't compare me to Steve! He has zero game,"
"Says that one who's currently single," Steve said back.
"Okay got me there."
"Call her Buck, It's not every day you meet someone who makes your heart go crazy, someone who you just can't wait to talk to the next day." Bucky was about to ask how he knew how he felt but Steve practically read his mind. "I know that look, it's the same look I had when I met Nat."

Later that night

Bucky was in his room, the girl's number typed into his phone and his thumb rolled over the call button but had yet to press it completely. What if it was a mistake and she realizes he wasn't who she thought he was? What if he gets all nervous again?
"No," He said to himself. "I can't be scared. I am going to do this." He finally pressed the button and smiled nervously as it rang. After three rings someone answered.
"Hello?" Her soft voice filled his ears and once again he was speechless. He could hear more of an accent now, he couldn't pinpoint what it was, however. "Hello?" She asked again and Bucky took a deep breath.
"Hello." He finally answered and he could have sworn he heard her sigh in content.
"Hi." She said. "Is this James?"
"Yeah." He managed.
"Good. I am glad you called."
"I am glad I managed to call. I was kind of nervous."
"You seem to be nervous a lot James. Do I make you nervous? I don't intend to do that."
"No, it's just... I don't know. I don't even know your name and you're a very pretty girl." He stopped himself before falling into embarrassment.
"My name is Wanda."
"I'm James." He said before silently cursing himself. She already knew that idiot! "I am sorry, I don't know why I am so nervous I am usually much calmer. "
"I like that I get to see you all flustered." She said. "Well at least hear you."
"I think you're the only one who's heard me all flustered."
"Good," She responded and he could swear he pictured her smiling right now. "Is there something you wanted to ask me perhaps or did you just call to find out my name?"
"No." He said but quickly added on. "I mean I didn't come on here to just find out your name. I do have a question for you." She laughed softly. "Do you maybe want to meet for dinner?"
"Dinner?"
"Or maybe lunch. Or we don't even have to eat we can go to the movies, there are a lot of good movies out right now."
"Are you asking me out on a date or something as friends?" She asked.
"A date." He answered. There was a moment of silence on the other end before she spoke up again.
"Yes, James I will go out with you."
"Good. Awesome, this is great." He smiled. "Friday? Is that good for you?"
"Perfect."
"Okay, then I will see you Friday at six."
"See you then. I'll text you later?"
"I'd like that." He said. "Goodnight Wanda."
"Good night James." Bucky hung up with a smile lacing his face. She actually said yes and he was over the moon excited. He couldn't explain but he knew that this was not just a regular date. This had a chance of being something more, something beautiful perhaps.
"So I am guessing I lost the bet?" Natasha's voice rang out.
"Sorry Romanff I know you hate losing," he said with a slight smirk.
"I am happy to lose right now." She said. "I am happy for you and Wanda."
"Wait I never told you here name," Bucky said frowning, but Natasha only smirked.
"Please never doubt me Barnes, I do know other people other than people at work," she smirked and walked down the hall leaving Bucky alone to shake his head. Natasha was something else. I guess he did have her to thank, and if things worked out he knew she's never let him forget it.
The future was still untold, but he had a feeling things were going to work out great.
