Two Souls

Aiden glanced at the missing poster, taped to the bricked wall of the alley. The familiar emerald green eyes stared back at him as he swallowed nervously. Jesse was missing... or... that's what the townspeople thought.

"What do you think of this?" Aiden whispered, reaching out to smooth down the wrinkled paper.

"At least they got my face right. I remember back at the White Pumpkin Mansion... well, Cassie didn't exactly get Lukas's nose right."

Jesse's voice laughed in his head. Aiden managed a small smile, but deep down, he felt nervous.

He shouldn't be near the town, since the townspeople were still looking for him. "Aiden? What's wrong?" Jesse asked, worry in his voice as Aiden shook his head.

"It's okay, I was just... thinking." Aiden turned away from the picture, looking down at the gravel road. A sudden gust of wind made Aiden shiver, reminding him of... the Sky City prison. No, he couldn't remember that now.

If he remembered, Jesse would be able to pick up on his thoughts. And thoughts were dangerous. It was bad enough that Jesse was physically gone, but now that he was literally inside Aiden's head, made it a thousand times worse.

Ever since Jesse had been proclaimed 'missing' many people accused Aiden for killing him.

But they didn't know the true story.

It was in the evening when Jesse and Aiden visited Ivor, a self proclaimed alchemist who reassured them that all he wanted to do a simple experiment. But what they weren't expecting was that Ivor would make a potion to merge the two boys together.

Afterwards, it was just chaotic. It took some time just to get used to Jesse's voice in his head, to be honest... but then the rumours spread.

Many people saw Aiden running out of Ivor's lab, but without Jesse. Many people didn't trust Aiden after all, ever since the Sky City incident.. even after the whole incident with the Admin.

"Hey, you never really told me much about The Admin." Aiden muttered, leaning against a wall and looking over at a booth, where there was a man selling pork chops and various types of meat.

"Well, what's there to talk about? Romeo's dead. He sacrificed himself so that we could escape. And don't you dare to eat pork chops or I won't talk to you."

Aiden didn't listen, since he was busy trying to edge closer to the booth. It was nearly midnight, so there weren't many people around to catch Aiden but still, he had to be careful. "Aiden don't you dare steal a pork chop! Why don't you steal, I dunno, steak?" Jesse protested as Aiden waited for the man selling the food to turn his back on him.

"Sorry Jesse, but I'm hungry!" Aiden whispered, hiding in the shadows as the man turned, kneeling down to take something out of a chest.

Aiden edged closer, ready to steal. "Oh no you don't." Jesse exclaimed, as a sudden force made Aiden's hand jump back.

"What-! Jesse, I told you not to-." Aiden hissed, drawing backwards as the man turned and spotted Aiden. "Hey! It's you!" he yelled, grabbing a stone sword. Aiden stepped back as the man started to grab more weapons.

"I remember him!" Jesse said as Aiden turned and started to run, heading for the town gates. "He's that butcher who almost killed Reuben.."

"Run now, talk later, Jesse!" Aiden yelled, unsheathing his diamond sword as more alarms went off, and more people emerged from their houses.

"We're never gonna make it, Aiden! Look!" Jesse's voice yelled in his head as Aiden winced. "Use your inside voice!"

But Aiden knew what Jesse was talking about. The gates of the town were about to close, sealing them in. "Murderer!" someone yelled, an arrow whizzing past Aiden's head.

"Duck!" Jesse yelled quickly as Aiden obeyed, dodging another arrow. Thanks to Jesse, Aiden was better at combat but now wasn't the time to show off. If they got caught... who knew what would happen?

"Jesse," Aiden muttered as he ran, "Now would be a good time to use se teamwork..." he trailed off.

Jesse didn't answer for awhile. "Are you sure? It could tire both of us-"

"Just do it!" Aiden yelled, not caring that he looked like a crazy person talking to himself. He was used to it by now.

Aiden flung his diamond sword towards the gates, the blade holding the two doors apart as he ran faster, Jesse lending his energy, something the both of them always did whenever they got into trouble.

At the last second, Aiden jumped, higher than any normal person could and grabbed his sword from between the gates, making it immediately slam shut and blocking out the civilian's shouts from the other side.

Aiden gasped for breath, sitting on the hard gravel path, one hand pressed against the gates as he trembled. "That... was really close." he closed his eyes, trying to catch his breath.

"All that for nothing," Jesse's dejected voice said as Aiden opened his eyes and looked at himself. His left arm bleeding from that arrow that almost shot him. And his ankle was stinging with pain, from where he had landed.

"... I'm sorry Jesse." Aiden muttered, using his hands to slowly stand up. Aiden leaned against the gates, hearing the shouts on the other side.

Jesse sighed. "It's my fault. If I didn't stop you from taking that pork chop, we wouldn't have been caught."

Aiden scowled, suddenly annoyed by Jesse's meek voice. "Yeah, whatever. You know what, now that we've got no food, we might as well waste away. No food. No money. No home. Tell me what to do now, Jesse." Aiden snapped, obviously irritated.

Jesse kept quiet, as Aiden picked up his diamond sword which he had dropped. "Just what I thought. Just shut up Jesse. And leave me alone. You're nothing but a voice in my head."

As soon as he said that, Aiden stopped, immediately regretting it.

"Wait, Jesse... I didn't mean it.!" Aiden said quickly, waiting for Jesse's voice again. Nothing.

"Jesse please talk to me, I'm sorry!"

Aiden waited, but he didn't hear anything. Even the faint ringing at the back of his head had faded, and everything was silent.

"Jesse.. I'm sorry, please! Just listen to me, I was just angry!" Aiden said desperately, tears forming in his eyes as he stood in front of the gates.

"Aiden?" a new voice called from behind, making him turn.

A familiar redhead stood there, her gold sword hanging from her belt and a llama beside her, carrying a chest. Both of them looked like they just got back from an adventure, which meant that she didn't know that Aiden was a wanted criminal.

But still, Aiden stepped back, as Petra held up a hand. "It's okay! It's just me, Petra! Don't you remember?"

Aiden glanced at her, but turned away, running right into the woods at the side of the town.

Even running felt different, and it was as if Jesse had completely left him, something Ivor said was 'impossible' now that they were together.

Aiden stopped, holding onto a tree branch as he tried to find Jesse in his head. How could he find someone he couldn't see? He closed his eyes.

"I'm sorry Jesse, I really am... I just said those words in anger and I swear, I didn't mean any of it!" his fingers gripped the branch tighter as tears spilled from his eyes, dripping onto the grass.

"Please just come back... I really need your voice right now. I don't know what I'd do without you." Aiden sank to the ground, crying.

He didn't know how long he stayed that way, but Aiden looked up when he heard someone clapping slowly, each clap becoming closer as Aiden slowly stood up.

"Wasn't that nice?" a familiar voice said, emerging from the shadows. His blue eyes burning with anger as he raised his iron sword, pointing it right at Aiden.

"Lukas." Aiden said softly, his hand on his sword as he edged away from the blonde.

"Let's keep it short and simple, alright?" Lukas said in a fierce voice. "Did you kill Jesse or not?"

"And why were you talking to yourself? I see that those whispers about you were true." Lukas laughed, "People call you crazy. Did you know that?"

Aiden stepped back even more, his back against the tree as he called for Jesse in his thoughts. Nothing except a coldness in his head. "Leave me alone Lukas." Aiden said, his voice shaking.

"Leave you alone?" Lukas asked in a mocking voice. "After what you've done?! You killed Jesse!"

"That's not what happened! If you give me some time to explain-!"

"ENOUGH!" Lukas yelled, running towards Aiden and for a moment, Aiden didn't do anything since he was so used to Jesse guiding him whenever they had to engage in combat. So Aiden got a punch to the face, making him fall right onto the grass.

"You're not worth my time Aiden. You cast me out." Lukas stepped onto Aiden's back, holding him down. "You got me arrested up there in Sky City, you betrayed us all! And lastly..." Lukas raised his sword, "You killed my best friend."

"NO! I DIDN'T KILL HIM, LUKAS! HE'S IN MY HEAD!" Aiden yelled, hitting away Lukas's foot and rolling over onto his back, trying to stay alive and also getting horrible flashbacks from his time in prison, when he had to endure the endless torture of the guards.

For a moment, Aiden heard a ringing in his head, but it faded, as he looked up at Lukas, afraid.

"What do you mean he's in your head? You're mad." Lukas snapped, the point of his sword touching Aiden's neck.

Aiden shook his head, "Y-you don't understand. Jesse's been in my head the whole time, ever since he went missing. Ivor accidentally created a potion to merge us together. It sounds insane but you have to believe me!"

Lukas narrowed his eyes. "Yeah right," he said after awhile, pressing the sword against Aiden's neck even harder, drawing a drop of blood. "You killed my best friend and I cant forgive you for that."

Lukas swung his sword back, tears glistening in his eyes as he aimed at Aiden's head.

Without warning, Aiden grabbed his diamond sword and caught Lukas's blade with his own, with a loud scrape of metal against metal.

"Remember this?" Jesse's voice asked quietly as Aiden couldn't move.

Aiden nodded, "Of course." he muttered and twisted Lukas's sword in a circle, making him lose his grip on the blade. "What the-?! NO!" Lukas yelled, trying to catch the sword but Aiden kicked him down to the ground, Lukas's sword clattering out of his hand.

There was a moment of silence as the two boys regarded each other breathlessly. A shock of recognition flashed in Lukas's eyes, since there was only one person who could pull off a move like that.

Aiden sheathed his sword, looking down at Lukas sadly. "You didn't believe me Lukas. So I had to prove it to you." Jesse said, for once, controlling Aiden. Something both of them had promised to never do.

Suddenly, Aiden nearly fell over as Jesse let him go. Whenever Jesse controlled Aiden, he would immediately collapse, since it took up a lot of his energy.

"D-do you believe us now?" Aiden asked, looking at Lukas, who remained frozen. After awhile, Lukas nodded, looking confused as Aiden managed a smile. "Good.."

"Then leave us alone." he said, standing up and slowly making his way out of the wood, leaving Lukas behind.
