The Road to Redemption
"Jesse, we need to hurry up! This place is falling apart!"
Jesse knew Petra was right, she needed to stop hesitating. If she didn't, she would be risking their lives.
Jesse glanced over at Romeo one last time. He was still sitting there, just looking at her.
"Go on, leave me." He insisted. But even though he said these words, his eyes were begging.
"Jesse!" Petra insisted, tapping her shoulder. "We need to go!"
Jesse set a firm face. What she was about to do was wrong, but the rage inside her was blinding.
"Good bye, Romeo." She said in a cold voice, before turning away from him.
As soon as she did, both Petra and Jack started running, making their way down the terminal zone. Jesse stayed right on their heels, forcing herself not to look back. She hated Romeo for everything he's done to her, to her friends, to Beacontown. But was this really the right thing to do?
Those thoughts kept whirling around her mind. She tried not to let it distract her. They needed to get out of there, she's wasted enough time already.
"There!" Jack called, pointing to the portal in the distance.
A fall of lava was slowly making it's way down the the portal, ready to block their path.
"We need to reach the portal before the lava can!" Petra said anxiously. "Otherwise we'll die here!"
"Then we need to hurry!" Jesse gasped, signalling them to run ahead of her.
Leader's instinct, she always waited till last to make sure everybody got in safely before herself.
Jesse's friends took the lead, with her running a few feet behind them. A string of hair was dangling in front of her face, but she barely noticed it. All that was on her mind at that moment, was the safety of her friends.
There was a clear stretch to the portal – No obstacles in their way. Jesse was confident that they were going to make it, her lips curling into a smile.
They did it!
But Jesse had celebrated too soon. Suddenly a large figure rose up beside them. It was a similar colossus, only this one was glitching out. Colourful particles made it hard to be recognized.
It roared loudly, it's flickering eyes glowing a bright red. Then, to Jesse's horror, it raised it's fist above the platform. She dug in her feet, coming to halt.
"Petra! Jack! Watch out!" She called out loudly.
Her call made them both stop just in time. The colossus brought it's fist down right where they would've been running within the next ten seconds. The platform shattered beneath his force, leaving a big gaping hole down to the void.
"We have to jump!" Jack called out, as the colossus raised it's hand again, timing another hit.
It brought its fists down just as Petra and Jack leapt forward. Jesse had fallen behind when she warned them. She watched in horror as her friends disappeared into the smoke.
Then, as the smoke cleared, she was relieved to see them both safely on the other side. They looked dazed from the jump, but were OK.
"Jesse!" Petra called out, seeing that her friend was still on the other side.
"You have to jump!" Jack insisted.
Jesse inhaled deeply, before she took a running start. The gap was big, but nothing she couldn't handle. She knew she could make that jump with ease.
However, just as she was about to make the leap, the colossus lowered his fist right in front of her. Jesse stopped so abruptly, her feet slipped from underneath her.
She fell.
For a second, Jesse was completely disorientated. She was in mid-air. It was like everything went into slow motion. She saw her friend's horrified faces, she saw the void right beneath her. She was going to die.
Then, just before Jesse could fall to certain death, two strong hands grabbed her by the waist, pulling her back up to safety.
"What the-" Jesse gasped, looking to her saviour in panic. "Romeo?"
"No time, you have to run!" He insisted, gesturing wildly for her to move.
The colossus was now coming towards them, moving away from the gap.
"While he's distracted, go!" Romeo called, lightly pushing Jesse.
This snapped her back to reality, and she broke off running. Her heart was still rapidly racing about, her breaths short. She raced at the gap full speed, before leaping.
There was that sickening feeling of being in mid-air once again. Only this time Jesse landed on her feet, safely on the other side.
Petra and Jack were repeating rushed sentences like "Thank god you alive!" or "You're OK!" But Jesse barely heard them.
All the rage in her system has been instantly replaced by fear. And now she knew, she had to do the right thing.
"Romeo!" Jesse called out. "Come on!"
"Jesse we don't have time." Petra hissed, pulling at her arm.
"The lava is getting closer." Jack added.
But Jesse stood her ground.
"Go without me!" Romeo called from across the gap, before dodging another attack from the colossus.
"I'm not leaving you to die here!" Jesse called back, clenching her fists. "I'd never be able to live with myself if I did. Come, please!"
Romeo somersaulted to the side avoiding another hit from the colossus, before running to the gap.
"Are you sure about this!?" He called across.
"Sometimes you have to do what's right, not what's easy." Jesse replied. "Jump!"
And he did.
Jesse caught Romeo's arm as he barely missed the platform, hauling him up with her friends' help.
The colossus roared again, starting to move in their direction.
"Go, go, go!" Jesse called, gesturing wildly.
Once again, she hung back till last, even letting Romeo go ahead of her. They reached the portal as droplets of lava started to drip down. Petra and Jack leapt in in unison, disappearing into the swirl of white.
Romeo stopped right in front of the portal, waiting till Jesse was beside him.
"Don't stop!" She insisted, pushing him from behind straight into the portal.
The lava closed off the entrance right behind Jesse as she jumped through as well, leaving the crumbling terminal space behind once and for all.
"We did it!" Petra called out, throwing her arms in the air.
"Dang right we did." Jack agreed giving her a high-five.
"And we're miraculously still in one piece!" Jesse added sarcastically as she rested with her hands on her knees. Everybody laughed.
Suddenly slight vibrations ran through the surface beneath them. The terminal portal slowly faded into nothingness, along with all the bedrock above their heads.
Loud cheering filled the air as the sky cleared above Beacontown. Jesse flung her arms around her friends' necks, hugging them tightly. Then she turned back, to the lonely figure standing where the portal used to be.
Romeo just looked back down at the ground, ashamed.
"Jesse!" A familiar voice called.
Jesse turned around, and immediately broke into a massive smile.
"Lukas!" She called, as they all ran down the steps to greet him. Romeo timidly followed at a slow pace.
"I'm so glad you guys are OK." Lukas said, pulling both Jesse and Petra into a tight hug.
However, the moment they pulled away he frowned.
"Please don't tell me..." He started, pointing to Romeo who was awkwardly standing behind them.
"No, no, he's good now." Jesse said quickly, taking Lukas' hand. "He saved my life."
"HmmMmm, and that's literally the only reason I haven't used Miss Butter on him yet." Petra muttered.
"Still can't say I trust the guy either." Jack agreed grumpily.
"Listen... everybody..." Romeo started.
"You don't have to say anything." Jesse said, stepping up to him. "Words won't make up for what you have done."
Romeo looked at her desperately, but then she smiled.
"Actions will."
"You're right." Romeo said, looking both relieved and determined.
"I'm going to the return to the Underneath, help all of the people who's still trapped down there." He hesitated. "Maybe... just maybe, I'll run into Xara. Maybe we could fix things."
"I hope she has her sword with her when he does find her." Petra whispered to Jack and Lukas.
"Well." Jesse said softly, putting one hand on Romeo's shoulder. "Good luck."
He smiled at her, nodding. "Thank you Jesse. For everything."
With that he walked past her, stepping down the stairs.
"Are you sure you trust him enough to just let him go?" Lukas asked, as they watched his figure grow smaller and smaller.
"No." Jesse replied sheepishly. "But I have to give him a chance of redemption. It's the right thing to do."
"You know you're too kind for your own good, right?" Petra joked, patting Jesse on the shoulder.
Jesse just smiled, as she watched Romeo's figure disappear.
She hoped to somehow, some day, see him again.
So, this was actually supposed to be a "Romeo x Jesse" shipping one shot, requested by @niki_allen0119.
Um. I know it's terrible. I mean the one shot came out OK, but it's not really shipping based... I warned you guys about this though, I'm not good at writing ships XD
I, myself, have never felt any romantic attraction to anybody, male or female. I think my friend said there's a name for that, but I dunno XD So this is mainly why I find shipping stories difficult. I don't have anything against them, they're just challenging.
Plus, I don't really ship these two myself XD When I played the game, I literally left Romeo in the terminal space, I didn't even give him a chance of redemption. So eh, whoops.
So, I'm really sorry if I disappointed you with this. I tried. ^^'
Nonetheless, I hope ya'll enjoyed this! Feel free to request more one shots, whether they are one word prompts, actual plot lines, or sequels to previous one shots I have written! :)
