Lending a Paw

___
Jesse pulled aside the curtains, staring out at the pouring rain. She groaned softly, think about how much she would love to stay home. Get into bed early with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book, while listening to the storm gusting outside.
But no, none of that. Instead she was going out there into the rain to hunt mobs with Petra and Lukas, probably to wake up with a cold the next day.
Jesse sighed as she stepped back from the window, adjusting the Adamantine Impervium chestplate. She reached down, picking up her diamond sword and slipping it into the sheath.
"A promise is a promise, I suppose." Jesse said with a chuckle as she strode down the hallway, heading for the front door.
All a sudden the office's door burst open, Jesse's new intern, Radar nearly crashing straight into her.
"Easy there, buddy, what's the rush?" Jesse asked with a chuckle, raising her eyebrows slightly.
"Jesse!" Radar waved about a paper, looking ready to launch into an explanation.
"Not now, Radar." She said, putting her gloved hand on his arm. "Petra and Lukas are expecting me. You're in charge this evening, which unfortunately means your responsible for the paperwork as well."
"I know Jesse, but this just came in." Radar said anxiously, starting to adjust his glasses like he always did.
"Can't it wait until tomorrow?" Jesse asked, nearly flinching as she heard the audible impatience in her voice.
"I, uh-" Radar fumbled with the piece of paper. "A resident's dog went missing-"
"Oh, that's something you should be able to handle fine." Jesse said, giving Radar's shoulder. "One day you'll need to be able to handle much more important emergencies, I'm sure you'll be okay."
She began walking down the hallway, glancing over her shoulder. "I believe in you Radar! Don't make all your training go to waste."
"Y-yes boss!" Radar called back, his expression lacing with determination before he darted back into the office.
Jesse just chuckled slightly, opening the door and stepping out into the rain. She was still getting used to having Radar around, but he was a big help.
Jesse broke into a jog, water splashing up from where her boots hit the puddles, rain drops pelting the smooth surface of her armour. It wasn't long until she spotted the shapes of Petra and Lukas by the gate.
Lukas was standing under the closest tree, trying his hardest not to get wet. Petra was leaning against Beacontown's wall with her shoulder, her arms cross over her chest and her red hair quite a few shades darker than their usual shade.
"Hi guys!" Jesse greeted as she came running up. "Sorry I'm late!"
As she came to a stop, she noticed that Petra's wolf wasn't by her side like always. She frowned, looking up at Petra. "Where's Rascal?"
"Right here." Petra responded, pointing over her shoulder with her thumb.
Rascal was just outside the gate, his grey coat stained with mud as rolled around in puddle. They all watched him with grins on their faces, even Lukas dropping the attempt to stay dry so he could too watch Rascal.
"Guess you have a wolf to bath tonight when we finish up here." Jesse to Petra, nudging her friend with her elbow.
"Eh." Petra just shrugged her shoulders. "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it."
They all laughed again.
"Come on, let's get this show on the road." Lukas said, waving his bow. "I'm not standing out in the rain for nothing."
"Man you can complain hard about a little water." Petra said, rolling her eyes before unsheathing Miss Butter as well.
Nobody needed telling twice, excitedly running out of Beacontown and into the night to look for any mobs to fight. Rascal excitedly darted after them, the pelting rain quickly starting to do the job of washing out the mud from his coat for them.
At first Rascal stuck to Petra's side, attacking any mobs that she went for. But he soon relaxed into the activity, leaving her side and starting to bring down mobs of his own. Especially skeletons.
Jesse had to admit that it felt good to get out there again. Soaring on adrenaline, she barely even paid attention to the water running into her clothes and armour, or the tiny waterfalls that were cascading over her face from her hair. She was grinning from ear to ear the entire time.
"Gotcha!" Jesse called out as she somersaulted beneath a skeleton's arrow, her diamond blade cutting the mob in half with one slice. Leaving nothing but a small pile of bones.
Jesse let out an excited whoop, throwing her sword into the air and expertly catching it by the helm again. Her brown eyes darted around for her next target, she was soon barreling down on a spider.
Seeing the attack coming, the spider leaped up at Jesse. It slammed its fangs into her arm, biting down hard. Protected by the steel of armour, Jesse simply kicked the spider off her, impaling her diamond sword into it's body.
"Playing with fire are we?" Petra called out to Jesse in a chuckle, pulling Miss Butter out of a zombie's chest.
"When you've got armour this strong?" Jesse playfully shot back, holding up her arm just in time to reveal the spider's teeth marks slowly mending away. "Hell yes."
"Show off!" Lukas responded as he nocked another arrow into his bow.
Jesse's attention was momentarily drawn away from her friends, leaping the side to avoid another arrow from a skeleton. Both her and Petra went for the mod at the same time, diamond and gold piercing it's skull at the same time.
"Trying to steal my spotlight, are you?" Petra asked, grinning at Jesse.
"Not if I saw it first." Jesse responded with a wink.
The two them pulled their swords out of the bone, before high-fiving each other victoriously.
Jesse was ready to dart off to her next kill, when she noticed Petra lower Miss Butter, looking around her.
"Petra?" Jesse asked. "Everything okay?"
"Where's Rascal?" Petra asked, her blue eyes darting around.
"He was here only a few seconds ago." Lukas responded, firing the arrow into an approaching creeper, before turning to Jesse and Petra.
"Well does it look like he's here now?" Petra responded aggressively.
"He might just have darted out of sight after a skeleton or something, let's not worry just yet." Jesse said, trying to relief the tenseness in the atmosphere.
"Rascal!" Petra called out, cupping her hands to her face. Her voice immediately got lost amidst the sound of pouring rain.
Jesse bit her lip slightly, feeling a a smidge of fear ripple throughout her body. Starting to fear the worst, what if Rascal got injured? He was a born fighter, but that didn't mean he was invincible.
"Listen, listen!" Lukas suddenly said, holding up his hands.
Jesse and Petra both froze, listening intently. The only sounds to meet their ears were the pelting of raindrops, the roar of the thunder. Petra started opening her mouth, about to shoot something back at Lukas, when the sound repeated itself.
A wolf's howl from somewhere within the forest.
"Rascal." Petra breathed, immediately breaking into a sprint in the direction of the trees.
Exchanging glances, Jesse and Lukas didn't need an invite to bolt after their friend. They were quickly swallowed up by the shadows the large oak trees cast, swiftly weaving through the trunks and even jumping over a broken branch or log every now and then.
Petra stayed in the lead, her pace increasing every time another howl sounded out. Jesse was surprised at just how far Rascal had gone.
All of a sudden, a large grey shape shot out of the trees, running straight towards them.
"Rascal!" Petra gasped in the relief at the sight of the wolf, all three of them skidding to a stop.
Immediately it was clear that something was wrong. Rascal's ears were pulled back, his tail not wagging at the sight of them. He whined turning back around and running a few steps back into the trees. Looking over his shoulder again, he let out another whine.
"Petra, do you know what he's trying to tell us?" Lukas asked her.
"No, I've never seen him behave this way before." Petra said, sounding concerned.
Rascal whined again, stepping around on the spot in an anxious matter.
"It's almost as if he's trying to show us something." Jesse said. "Maybe we should try following him, see where he takes us?"
"It couldn't hurt." Lukas agreed.
"Okay Rascal." Petra said, facing her wolf. "Go boy."
Immediately Rascal turned around, breaking into a run. Petra was right on his heels, with Jesse and Lukas lagging barely a few steps behind them.
Rascal lead them only a bit deeper into a forest, before stopping at the base of a giant mushroom. The large fungi's cap seemed to make for a good roof above him.
"Rascal, what-" Petra began, only to immediately swallow her words.
As they approached, Jesse and Lukas both also spotted the figure lying beneath the mushroom, inhaling sharply at the sight.
A dog, slightly smaller built than Rascal was lying there. They're body heaving as they heavily panted, grey fur stained with blood.
"My god, what happened to this poor thing?" Lukas asked in horror.
"I think it was attacked." Petra said, pointing to the remains of what once a zombie. "Look, teeth marks. A canine took that thing down, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was Rascal."
Jesse knelt down in the mud beside the injured dog. Rascal whimpered anxiously, starting to lick the dog's wounds.
Carefully, Jesse parted his shaggy far to get a clear look at the colour around his neck. She lifted the name tag with her fingers, eyes widening at the name engraved in it.
Wink
"Jesse what are you doing?" Lukas asked as Jesse detached her chestplate slightly, slipping her hand in underneath it to get to her overalls pocket.
"Getting confirmation." Jesse responded as she pulled out her cellphone. Keeping it beneath the mushroom so the device didn't get damaged by the rain, Jesse quickly pressed it to her ear.
"Jesse?" Radar's small voice immediately sounded from the phone. "Why are you calling, did anything happen, are you ok-"
"Radar, take a breath." Jesse ordered, interrupting him. It was followed by a deep inhale on the other side of the cellphone.
"You don't have to worry, I'm fine. That missing dog you told me about, its owner isn't Stacy by any chance?"
"Yes!" Radar quickly replied.
"Let her know that we found Wink, and is bringing him back." Jesse said. "He got pretty beaten up by a zombie, but his wounds aren't life threatening. He'll be okay."
Not giving Radar time to reply, Jesse ended the call and slipped her phone back into her pocket. Petra was stroking Rascal, while Lukas was on his knees beside wink with his jacket wrapped around the wounds.
"How are we going to get him home?" Lukas asked.
"The same way Axel got you home when you managed to trip over your own feet and knock yourself out against a tree." Petra responded, crossing her arms. "By carrying him."
"Are you seriously still reminding me of that incident two years after it happened?"
"Yes, it's great."
Rascal let out an impatient yelp, pawing at his owner's leg. He then trotted back to Wink's side, giving the dog a nudge with his nose. Wink whimpered, but his tail weakly wagged at Rascal.
"I'll take the lead and clear any mobs that tries to intervene." Petra said, unsheathing Miss Butter again.
"I can take the job of carrying Wink?" Lukas offered.
"Sounds good." Jesse said, unsheathing her own sword as well. "I'll help Petra, minimize the change of any obstacles in out way.
Rascal was still protectively standing in front of Wink. Seeming to know that they were going to help the injured dog, Rascal stepped away as soon as Lukas came over to pick him up.
Wink whined, squirming slightly in Lukas's arms as he was lifted from the ground. But he settled in the blonde's arms after a few seconds, relaxing.
Rascal ran back up to Petra's side, circling around her and pricking his ears. His way of saying he was more than ready to go.
Jesse gave a nod of confirmation to her friends, raising her diamond sword. "Let's go."
------------------
"I honestly don't know how to thank you all enough." Stacy said as she brought some cups of hot cocoa out of her little kitchen for the three order members. "I don't know what I would have done, had you not found my Wink."
"Credit goes to Rascal here." Jesse admitted as she accepted a mug. "We weren't even close to Wink out there, but he managed to sniff him out."
"Speaking of." Petra lowered her mug just before taking a drink. "Where did Rascal disappear off to already? Didn't he enter the house with us?"
Everybody looked around, confusion written across their faces.
"Oh, you guys, look." Stacy said, lowering her voice slightly.
She lifted an arm, pointing across the room. Wink was sleeping in his dog basket where they had last seen him, all his wounds freshly treated and bandages. But he was no longer alone.
Despite the fact that the basket was only really made to fit one dog, Rascal was lying beside wink in it. Gently licking the sleeping dog's face in an affectionate way.
"Well." Jesse said, beginning to smile as she looked over at the others. "I have a feeling those two will be friends for life.
