Intruder

One word prompt "Intruder" suggested by @Nix7303

Hiding in the shadows. Watching the large white building. Waiting for the lights inside to go off.

Jesse sat at her dining table, her right elbow propped up on the wooden surface, her forehead resting in her hand. Holding the black felt-tip pen in her left hand, it silently sweeping over the paper.

Her bare foot softly tapping against the wooden floor, brown eyes fixed on the paper in front of her. A tired smile forming on her lips as the thunder rumbled outside, her love for rain having never faded.

Clenching their fists, pulling the hood of their raincoat down further over their head. Silently wishing the young woman inside to retire to bed.

Jesse placed her pen down on the paper, reaching out for the cup of half-filled hot cocoa beside her and taking a small sip of the hot beverage. Holding the cup in her right hand as she used her left to rub her tired eyes, cursing the headache that was starting to form.

Jesse glanced up at the clock on the wall. It was nearly midnight. She wasn't planning on going to work the next day, Radar having offered to take over for a bit to give her some off time. She debated on going to bed, or continuing to work. She could sleep in after all?

Cursing under their breath, gritting their teeth as the cold wind blew over their wet form. How much longer did they have to wait?

Jesse stifled a yawn, getting up. She finished off the last of her hot cocoa, walking to the kitchen and leaving the empty cup in the sink. She tugged off her thick jacket, revealing her thin pyjamas underneath. Shivering slightly in the cold air as she reached out to switch off the light.

Light on the ground floor went off. That's a start...

Jesse walked up the staircase, keeping a hand on the stair's railing. Her tired eyes drooping already as she walked into her bedroom, shutting the door.

She looked at herself in the mirror, managing a tired smile. At least she knew she had a relaxing day awaiting her the next morning...

The figure tapped their boot on the ground, splattering some mud up their pants leg. Somebody behind them placing a hand on their shoulder. "Just be patient."

Jesse lay down on her bed, nestling herself into her soft pillow. Looking up at the bedroom ceiling with tired eyes. Wondering what will await her the next day.

After all... her life has been getting so repetitive. When was the last time she took out her sword? Felt like years...

Jesse turned around on the bed, reaching for the lamp on her bedside table and flipping the switch.

The light behind the curtains of the bedroom went off. The figure stood up right, rain threatening the pull their hood off. The same person from earlier touched their shoulder again. "Be patient." They said firmly.

The first figure glanced back, glaring at the other one. There were more chuckles in the dark, more people laughing at the head of their group's impatience.

"Give it time." The second figure said, sitting back down and folding their arms for warmth. "She needs to be asleep."

The first figure gave in and nodded, sitting down. Shivering as they pulled their raincoat's hood further over their head, gusts of window sending sheets of rain down onto the hooded people. But they didn't budge.

Simply, waiting.

Jesse's eyes slowly fluttered open, and she shivered. Her entire body was ice cold, her skin stiff with goosebumps. Jesse blinked a few times to get her eyes used to the dark, sitting slightly up on her pillow.

Strong gusts of wind were causing Jesse's curtains to flap, icy air seeping into the room. Jesse cursed under her breath, getting out of bed and jogging over to the window. She reached out, pulling it shut, mentally kicking herself for never closing it in the first place.

Wrapped her arms around herself to attempt at regaining some warmth, Jesse trudged back to her bed. She sunk down on the mattress, her eyes landing on the alarm clock on her bedside table.

02:06

A faint smile spread over Jesse's face. "Happy birthday to me." She whispered under her breath, her smile fading again.

Thunder roared slightly outside, the mere sound of rain making Jesse feel even colder. She didn't feel sleepy at all anymore, which was a bad sign. If she ended up lying awake now, she would end up walking around like a blasted zombie the next day!

Maybe I just need to go make myself a hot drink, warm myself up a bit. Jesse thought to herself, getting back off the bed.

She picked up her thick grey jacket, wrapping it around her shivering shoulders as she stepped out of the room, into the unlit hallway. Her eyes were well used to the dark, so she didn't bother turning on any lights, not until she got to the kitchen anyway.

A moving shadow made Jesse stop, right as she was about to head down the stairs... She looked around, but nothing appeared out of place. Probably just a shadow from the moving trees outside...

Jesse stiffened, hearing the sound of a plank creaking beneath somebody's weight. And it wasn't beneath hers.

Jesse looked down the hallway, seeing a dark figure. Her chest tightened, a shriek rising in her throat. She gulped it down quickly, keeping silent.

The person was tall, much much taller than Jesse. Muscular as well, about Axel's size. They had their back turned to her, creeping down the dark hallway.

Jesse took a deep, shaking breath, silently wishing that her sword wasn't all the way down in the treasure hall. She balled her hands into tight fists, getting her thoughts together.

Come on, slayer of the wither storm... you can do this. She told herself in her head.

Jesse knew the hallway by heart, knowing exactly where to step to avoid the floor creaking. She carefully tiptoed right after the big guy, her fists clenched tight. It's a good thing Petra taught her well.

The guy never knew what hit him, one moment sneaking down her hallway, next unconscious on the ground. Jesse ignored the throbbing in her knuckles – no doubt the guy was going to have one nasty bruise.

"Heard that?"

Jesse stiffened, hearing the hushed whisper downstairs.

"Probably just the wind outside." "Agreed. Nasty storm going on." "Would you mindless idiots shut up? You're going to wake her!"

Jesse felt her breathing speed up, her heart thudding in her chest. There was more than one!

Jesse quickly got down, pushing the guy into the nearest bathroom and closing the door behind him – locking it tightly. No way he'd be getting out through there if he woke up...

Jesse peered down the staircase, but the living room was dark. She wondered if she should head to the treasure hall for her sword... If these people were armed, she didn't want to get cornered without her weapon.

Jesse carefully went down the stairs, carefully not to step where the wood would creak. She stopped at the bottom of the stairs, looking around. It appeared to be empty... at first.

Jesse spotted the dark figure, back turned to her, cloak over their head. Less muscular than the dude upstairs, but still rather tall in comparison to Jesse.

Jesse crept up behind the figure, raising her fist. She realised how big of a risk there was, she had heard other voices as well. There were more people, and no doubt about it they would hear this one fall.

A loud creak sounded from beneath Jesse's foot, right as she approached the person in front of her. They quickly turned around, almost too calmly. Definitely had expected it to be one of of their buddies, and not Jesse...

The figure had barely screamed, when Jesse was on top of them, sending both of them tumbling right down onto the carpet behind the couch. Jesse raised her fist, bringing it down on the person's hidden face. There was an awful noise of what sounded like a nose breaking, a bloodcurdling scream from the person beneath her.

"The hell-!?"

Two strong hands ripped Jesse away from the person on the ground, hauling her up against the wall. Thinking quickly, Jesse raised her foot and kicked – hard.

She was uncertain whether her hit was to stomach, or some place a little more unpleasant.

Wherever it was, the person cried out in anguish as they sunk to the ground, curled in a ball of pain. Out of the corner of her eyes Jesse saw another person.

She turned around, ready to run at this person with a raised fist as well, when – surprisingly – they grabbed at the switch on the wall, the room flooding in light.

Jesse's eyes widened, looking into the large brown eyes of the person at the light switch. Their hood thrown back to reveal their face.

"Olivia!?" Jesse gasped in both surprise and horror.

She immediately looked down at the person in the ball of pain at her feet, flinching as she recognised she mob of blonde hair.

"What... the actual... hell!?" A breathless voice gasped, Jesse turned to see the third of the three pulling herself up from behind the couch. Hood thrown back to reveal her pained blue eyes and her short red hair, Petra's hand holding her nose as blood seeped through her fingers.

"Before I apologise for anything, why in the world are you in here??" Jesse asked, looking between her three friends with wide eyes.

"Hello!? Somebody! I'm locked in!" A muffled voice called from upstairs. Jesse winched, remembering the bulky guy she had left unconscious in the bathroom. "Is that...?"

"Axel." Olivia finished for her, crossing her arms over her chest.

"That's it!" Lukas said from the floor, still not seeming to even have the strength to get himself upright. "This is the last time I follow one of Petra's shitty ideas!"

"Hey!" Petra snapped over from the couch, before groaning in pain as she held her nose.

"Excuse me!" Jesse said, holding up her hands. "But I'm still awaiting an explanation here! I wake up at 2 am to find four hooded people in my house, what the hell did you expect me to do?"

The three of them exchanged glances, Olivia just smacking her forehead, while Lukas let his head fall back onto the carpet. Petra glared over at Jesse, her one hand still on her face.

"Well, since when do you go for midnight strolls in the first place? You were supposed to wake up to this surprise tomorrow morning!"

"Surprise?" Jesse asked, baffled.

Olivia's face was red, and she let out a snort of laughter. Even Lukas grinned, painfully, while Petra just glared.

"Happy Birthday Jesse."

I had way too much fun with this xD

I was debating hard on what to do with this prompt, and eventually decided on this. It kinda, in a way, reminds me of the one shot "bait" from my July challenge book.
Only this one ended happily!

Tell me what your theories was during this, and what you thought was going to happen at first!

As always, requests are wide open; be it one word prompts, actual plot lines or sequels to previous one shots I have written!
