Adventure
Extended Version of "Adventure?" from my 31-Day Oneshot challenge.
This was it. The day Jesse wished would never come. She stood at the gates to Beacontown, ready to say goodbye to her best friend. Petra was leaving.
Jesse tried to gulp down the lump in her throat. She wasn't going to stop Petra. She knew this was going to make Petra happy, and that's all Jesse ever wanted; for her friends to be happy. But she couldn't bare to see her best friend leave. What if they never see each other again? After everything they've been through together, after their countless years of friendship – could this really be the end?
Jesse and Petra watched as Olivia and Axel walked off into the distance, ready to return to Redstonia and Boomtown. In only a few minutes, Petra would be walking off like that too. The mere thought made Jesse's chest tighten.
Petra turned to Jesse. Her eyes were shining with excitement, but as she spoke, her voice contained a hint of sadness. "I guess this is it?"
Jesse took a deep breath. "I guess it is." She looked up at Petra, managing a small, sad, smile. "I'm going to miss you a lot, you know."
"And I'm going to miss you too." Petra said as Jesse pulled her into a tight hug. Jesse silently buried her face into Petra's jacket. "You know you could always come with me, right?" Petra said softly.
Jesse's heart ached at the sound of hope in her friend's voice. "I..." She started, before trailing off.
Petra's face fell slightly. "I know. Beacontown." She said, sighing softly. "I understand."
"I'm sorry." Jesse whispered, looking down at the ground. She didn't want to see the hurt look on Petra's face.
Petra reached over, gently lifting Jesse's head up, and smiling at her. "Hey, I understand. You have to do what makes you happy. And if that's running Beacontown, then that's where you should be."
Jesse pulled Petra into another hug. Was that really what she wanted though? Did she really want to run Beacontown? Is that her life...?
Finally they pulled away again. "Have fun out there, OK?" Jesse said, battling to keep her voice steady.
Petra nodded, smiling faintly at Jesse. "I'll see you again."
Those were her last words, as she turned around and started walking towards the gates. As she passed through them, it took every muscle in Jesse's body to stop herself from bolting after Petra. She couldn't believe she was letting her go.
Petra looked back one last time, waving at Jesse, before turning back to the road. She resumed walking again, her pace almost slightly reluctant.
Jesse wrapped her arms around herself, tears welling up in her eyes. She sniffed slightly. It was happening, this was it. She had just let her last friend, her best friend go. Possibly forever. A tear silently trickled down Jesse's cheek.
A figure came up beside Jesse, and she felt their hand on her shoulder. Wiping her eyes on her sleeve, Jesse looked over to see that it was Lukas. He could see the tears in her eyes, the sorrow on her face.
"You don't want to do this, do you?" Lukas asked softly. He could see that this broke her heart.
Not trusting herself to speak, Jesse only shook her head.
Lukas turned Jesse so she was face him, putting both his hands on her shoulders. "Then go."
"What?" Jesse asked in a small voice.
"You deserve your happy ending." Lukas said, smiling warmly at Jesse. "And if that means leaving Beacontown, then you shouldn't hold back. Go."
Jesse glanced at the open rode. Petra was slightly starting to veer off the path, ready to pass Champion City. Her figure was becoming smaller and more distant.
Jesse wrapped her arms around Lukas, hugging him tightly. "Thank you." She said, her voice muffled by his jacket. "Be safe out there." Lukas said softly, squeezing her hand. Jesse nodded.
"Wait." Radar came up behind them, his eyes wide. "You're leaving?"
Jesse gave him a sad smile. "I need to do this Radar. I can't let her go. I belong out there."
Radar gulped, looking at her with wide eyes. "What about Beacontown?" He asked in a trembling voice.
"Beacontown will be in your hands." Jesse replied.
Radar's mouth opened, but he was too shocked for words. Jesse went on.
"I'm promoting you from intern to Hero in Residence. Take care of Beacontown for me."
Radar took Jesse's hand in his, smiling up at her with tears in his eyes. This was, without a doubt, the biggest moment of his life.
"Thank you, Boss... for everything. You have been, you are, you always will be, the biggest inspiration in my life. I promise I won't let you down... I promise I'll make you proud."
Jesse put her hand on Radar's shoulder. "You already have." She said, before giving him a hug. Radar was frozen for a second, before he returned the hug.
Jesse pulled away from him, stepping up to the gate. She could just about make out Petra's shape in the distance. Jesse looked back at Beacontown one last time. Lukas was waving at her, smiling broadly, if slightly sadly. He had his free hand on Radar's shoulder. Radar had tears in his eyes as he waved to Jesse as well. Behind them, everybody else were gathering up at well, waving at her, Jack even giving her a thumbs up.
Jesse waved at them as well. She smiled. "Goodbye everyone." She said softly, before turning around.
She began jogging, then running, as fast as her legs could carry her. "Petra! Wait for me!" She called out to her friend.
Petra, who's already reached the fields beside Champion City, stopped dead in her tracks. She slowly looked over her shoulder like she couldn't believe what she was seeing.
Jesse ran all the way up to her, throwing her arms around Petra in a massive hug. Petra wrapped her arms around Jesse in return, the two of them holding onto each other like they were never letting go.
Finally they pulled away from each other. "That invitation still open?" Jesse asked hopefully.
Petra's face lit up.
"You bet it is."
Then, grasping each other's hands, smiles spread across their faces, Jesse and Petra started running off into the great unknown – leaving behind what they once called home.
-------------------------
Jesse and Petra sat together at the edge of a cliff, watching the sun set on their first evening away from Beacontown. Both of them were smiling, their faces glowing with happiness.
Petra glanced sideways at Jesse. "What changed your mind?" She asked.
Jesse turned to look at her as well. "I could never let you go." She replied, before adding with a light chuckle. "I might have had a little luck from Lukas."
"What about Beacontown?" Petra asked softly. She bit her lip. "I don't want you to give up what you love, because of me.."
Jesse reached over and put her hand on top of Petra's. "Friendship means way more to me than Beacontown." She said, giving Petra a reassuring smile. "I don't care where I am, be it Beacontown or a cave out in the woods. As long as I'm with you, it doesn't matter where the world takes us."
Petra smiled again, her expression filled with both joy and relief. They turned to look back at the setting sun, their fingers intertwining slightly.
"You're the best friend any body could ever ask for, you know that?" Petra said softly, as they watched the last bit of golden sun rays disappearing behind the mountains.
The sun may have set on their previous adventure, but that didn't mean that a brand new one wouldn't be right around the corner. And this time, they'll be by each other's side, no matter what.
I knew when I wrote "Adventure?" I wanted to do an extended version of it someday. Here it finally is. I can't decided whether I like this version, or the original one better. I definitely like the wording of this ending better, however.
And as you all probably know, I am majorly obsessed with Jesse and Petra's friendship XD I'm still thinking of doing a book based on their adventures after season 2. Maybe when Secrets Beneath the Lies is finished? Would that be something you guys would like to read? Lemme know! :3
Anyhow, nothing brand new today, but I hope you enjoyed this extended version of "Adventure"! I certainly did, writing it :P
