"you're too warm and cozy for me to want to stay up." Lightning said. Doc snickered softly and kissed the back of his neck gently, holding him tightly. he listened to the younger sleep for a bit, before letting himself fall asleep.

there was an awful ringing sound in his ears. he groaned and shifted on his pillow. he was going to just let it go until he realized it wasn't actually in his head. he shifted and mumbled, realizing the sound was his cell phone ringing. Lightning shifted and mumbled, pulling back to blink in confusion. Doc reached over and grabbed his phone holding the younger tightly with his other arm.

"hello?" he muttered. they both jumped at a knock on the door. "Sally? whats... yeah. hold on I'll be over there soon." Doc said getting up. Lightning headed for the door, but Doc grabbed his wrist. "don't answer that door kid. just go back to sleep." Doc murmured. Lightning looked confused and concerned. "yeah I'll be right there let me get dressed." Doc said, hanging up.

"whats going on?" Lightning ask. Doc smiled at him slightly, but there was something behind it and it wasn't genuine.

"just, go back to bed. I've got it handled." Doc said, kissing his forehead. he grabbed his shoes and headed out of the house. Lightning frowned and sat on the bed confused. he reached out for his cell phone and tried calling Sally. she didn't answer. he frowned and called Mack, but he didn't answer either. now worried he got up and started getting dressed. he was going to find out what was happening. he pulled on his shirt and called Red who, thankfully, answered.

"Red what the hell is going on?" Lightning ask. Red was silent as ever, but he could hear Doc.

"if thats the kid, tell him I have everything handled and hang up." Doc said.

"I... uh... s-sorry." Red murmured and hung up. Lightning frowned. he wanted to find out what was going on, but he knew if Doc was acting like this, that he should stay put. he walked over to the living room window and peeked out. there were news crews everywhere. thats all Lightning needed to know. he headed back to Docs room and shut the door, along with the curtains on the window, and curled back up in bed. Doc said he had it handled, so he wasn't going to argue. he pulled the blanket around him tightly, keeping his phone nearby in case Doc called him. he was curious as to why Doc was acting so shady, but he knew if anything was wrong Doc would let him know. he grabbed Docs pillow and put his head on it, content to go back to sleep, until he heard another knock on the door.

"huh?" he muttered. he frowned and stood from the bed.

don't answer that door kid.

Docs voice reminded him in the back of his head. he hesitantly creaked the bedroom door open to look at the front door and frowned a little. he looked over at the bed when his phone vibrated. he shut the door quietly and walked back over to the bed. he grabbed his cell phone. he had a text from Sally.

"Doc says don't answer the door and stay away from the windows."

Lightning was even more confused now.

"what the hell is going on out there?" Lightning muttered to himself. he called Sally again. this time she answered, sounding out of breath. "whats happening out there and why is Doc trying to hide me in the house?" Lightning ask. Sally was quiet a moment.

"uh... Chicks starting shit." Sally said.

"and? why is Doc keeping me from going outside?" Lightning ask.

"just trust him and stay inside Stickers." Sally said.

"thats not an answer Sally." Lightning frowned.

"its the best your getting." Sally said, hanging up. Lightning scold and tossed the phone onto the bed.

"fine." he huffed. he plopped onto the bed and waited for a bit, before deciding he was hungry. he stepped out of Docs room and headed for the kitchen. only to freeze when he caught a glimpse of a person out the kitchen window. "oh thats just great." Lightning mumbled to himself. deciding his foot was more important that dignity, he dropped down and carefully crawled across the floor and to the kitchen. grumbling to himself, Lightning opened the fridge, he really wanted some waffles from the freezer, but he couldn't reach from the floor. he rummaged through it and made himself a sandwich, because Doc was an old man who put his bread in the fridge, it was easy reach. he shut the fridge and sat down beside it, eating his sandwich silently. what kind of trouble could Chick make that would have everyone wound up like this? Lightning didn't know and the more he thought about it, the more he didn't want to know. Doc didn't panic and he'd sounded slightly panicked when he heard him on the call with Red. he frowned hearing his phone go off in the other room. groaning, he held his sandwich in one hand and proceeded to crawl back to the bedroom and grab it. "hello?" he muttered.

"Sheriff is coming to sit with you. he's coming to the back door and he has a key, just stay put in the bedroom." Doc said.

"why don't you tell me what the fuck is actually going on?" Lightning hissed. he could almost hear Doc glare at him through the phone.

"just stay put." Doc said, hanging up. Lightning chunked his phone back on the bed and grumbled, setting his sandwich on the nightstand. he paused slightly, grabbing Docs pistol when he heard someone at the door. he may not know what was going on, but he wasn't an idiot. something was seriously wrong and he was going to keep himself protected. he ducked beside the dresser, giving himself a perfect view of the door, while keep him hidden. it could be Sheriff, or it could be whatever trouble Chick brought to the little town. Lightning silently listened to footsteps walking through the house, hands sweating on the handle of the pistol in his hands. his stomach was feeling queasy and he swallowed hard as the steps came closer to the bedroom. he poked his head around the dresser and slowly watched person come into view. heart thundering in his chest as he hunkered back down beside the dresser, holding his breath nervously.

"son? you in here?" Sheriff ask quietly, he seemed almost as nervous as Lightning felt. Lightning let out a breath and put the safety back on the pistol.

"I'm over here." he muttered, standing up, making sure to keep the gun pointed at the floor.

"you okay?" Sheriff ask.

"I guess. whats going on out there?" Lightning ask, putting the pistol back in Docs nightstand. Sheriff knew better than to take it from him, no one was supposed to touch Docs pistol except Doc, but knew this situation was an exception for Lightning to have his hands on it. he kept his eyes on the gun until the nightstand drawer was closed. he knew Lightning wouldn't shoot him, the kid was nervous but not an idiot, but it was a habit.

"Chick Hicks is causing trouble." Sheriff said.

"yeah I keep hearing that. I want to know whats happening." Lightning glared. Sheriff frowned slightly and rubbed the back of his neck.

"Chick came into town, we guess looking for you. he broke into your room at the Cone, didn't find you and went after Sally instead. he stabbed her and she screamed. Mack came to the rescue so Chick attacked him to. Sally called Doc for help while Mack was being attacked. I heard the mess going on so I came running to help along with the others. Chick managed to get Flo, Red, and Fillmore before Sarge pulled out a stun gun and knocked him out. well, news crews started to arrive and suddenly Chick went missing and Doc sent me to stay with you." Sheriff explained. "thats the short version. Doc can tell you the whole story later." he added. Lightning seemed utterly shocked.

"he attacked you guys? is everyone okay?" Lightning ask nervously.

"well Sally got stabbed in the stomach, but she'll be okay. Mack got pretty cut up but Doc said he'd make it. Red's gonna need stitches in his hand from grabbing the blade, but he's gonna be fine. Flo's arm got cut, but its not bad, Red came to her rescue and thats when he grabbed the blade. Fillmore had no idea what was going on. stepped out, tried to calm the situation, like he does, and took a knife to the chest. he would've taken one to the throat if Sarge hadn't come out. everyone will be alright." Sheriff assured. Lightning nodded slightly and looked over at his sandwich, but decided he wasn't hungry anymore.

"why wouldn't anyone tell me this shit?" Lightning glared.

"because we ain't stupid kid. we know you would've come flying out of the house and probably gotten yourself killed." Sheriff frowned. Lightning huffed then paused.

"wait, what happened to Mater?" Lightning ask. Sheriff shrugged slightly.

"last I heard he was just fine and towing Chicks car to the impound so he couldn't get away." Sheriff said. Lightning nodded, jumping at a sound at the door.

"you locked the back door right?" Lightning ask hesitantly. Sheriff paled slightly looking at him. Lightning could feel his heart beat picking back up and Sheriff pulled his gun.

"stay here." Sheriff muttered. he inched his way back towards the back door. Lightning felt anxious, he grabbed Docs pistol and took shelter beside the dresser again, holding the gun to his chest. he heard gun shots and jumped slightly. he snatched his cell phone from his pocket quickly when it rang.

"kid Chicks loose." Doc said. Lightning took a shaky breath in. "kid? Monty? whats going on?" Doc ask worriedly. Lightning jumped again at another gun shot.

"I think he's in the house." Lightning whispered, peering around the dressed.

"speak up kid, can't hear you." Doc said.

"he's in the house!" Lightning hissed slightly louder, gun clutched to his chest. his hand was trembling slightly.

"is that gun shots? hold on kid!" Doc shouted. Lightning could hear him rushing. "Mack! Red! he's at the house!" Doc shouted. Lightning coward behind the dresser. "kid, grab my gun and get in a safe place. I'll be there in a second where is Sheriff?" Doc ask.

"I've got the gun... Sheriff went out to check because he forgot to relock the back door and now I'm hearing gun shots." Lightning said in his same quiet voice.

"where are you?" Chick called. "not so big and tough now that I took out your team huh?" Chick laughed.

"he shot Sheriff." Lightning said quietly.

"god fucking damn it! don't move! do you hear me? don't move!" Doc shouted. it was quiet. "Lightning? tell me you understand! Monty? Montgomery! answer-" Docs shouts were cut off with a gun shot and Lightning swallowed from his new hiding spot, watching Chick walk around the room. he'd been lucky enough Chick hadn't seen him scramble away from the spot beside the dresser. why did Doc have to shout so fucking loud? he caught a glimpse of Sheriffs body laying on the floor in the living room and slapped a hand quietly over his mouth to keep from saying anything. he looked at the gun in his hands and double checked to make sure it had bullets. was he really just going to sit here quietly until Doc got here or Chick found him? just hiding like a scared child? he swallowed hard and nodded to himself. yes, yes he was. because Doc told him to stay put and hide, and he was going to do exactly as Doc said. he didn't want to end up in the hospital again.
