Chapter 5
The next morning, bright and early, I wake up to three sharp knocks on the door to my suite. Agent Erica has a key to my room, so it's definitely not her. If it's Carter this early in the morning, I will kick his butt. We didn't agree to him waking me up early for training.
I throw the blankets off of my body and I stride over to the door. I'm about the unlock and open it, but I hear a shout from the other side of it.
"Open up!" the voice says.
I take a step back from the door and I get an idea.
I quickly go over to my bed and expertly make it look like someone is sleeping in it. Then, I quietly crouch behind the desk conveniently placed right beside the door.
They knock once more before busting the door down. Once they're inside my room, they run straight toward my bed. I take that as my opportunity to bolt out of the still open door.
I run down the hallway of suite's, down three flights of stairs to get the the library. I burst open the doors that always seem to be unlocked and I plop myself in the blue bean bag chair in the far left area of the library.
I take three deep breaths to calm myself down and the realization settles in: I'm a horrible spy, I didn't even take the time to look at my invaders faces. I'm such a horrible spy.
I curl up and fall asleep in my favorite place in the whole compound only to be woken up by Carter two hours later.
"Carter?" I ask, "What are you doing here?"
"We need to leave this building now. These people aren't who they say they are."
I sit up. "But all of the missions-"
"They were all set-ups to get us to believe them. They faked all the missions to get us to trust that they are who they say they are."
I shake my head. "No. I don't believe you."
"Mckennlee, I'll explain it to you later -once you're safe, but right now we need to get out of here." He tries to help me up.
"No," I repeat.
"What?"
"I'm not going with you. This is the cause my parents died fighting with. I trust their beliefs."
"What if your parents actually died while fighting against them? What if the organization has been lying to you about that this whole time?"
No. This can't be happening. I shake my head again.
"Come on, Mckennlee, I know you know I'm telling the truth."
"I'm sorry, Carter."
"Sorry for what?"
"I can't leave until you have some kind of proof." He takes a deep breath, like he's trying to negotiate with a small child, and he helps me up.
"Alright, I'll get you proof. Until then, sit tight and pretend you don't know anything. Pretend that everything is the same as it was." I nod. "Agent Erica is looking for you. You better go back to your room." I nod, he helps me back up to my feet.
He takes me to my room. From there, Agent Erica and I do training for most of the rest of the day.
