Chapter 3
When we enter Agent Karl's office, every head in the room turns to us. "Agent Erica, you may leave," Agent Karl says, and she exits the room, closing the door behind her. "Nathan, Jane, and Carter, this is Ken. Ken is the top agent in our worldwide agency, as you may have heard. Ken this is Nathan, Jane, and Carter." I nod. "Ken will be giving you three your tour of the building." I nod again.
Nathan extends his hand toward me, and I step forward to shake it. "It's a pleasure to meet you Agent Ken." I shake his hand.
"You too," I reply curtly as I take a step back and place my hands on my hips.
With that, Agent Karl and Agent Nathan go into deep conversation.
After a couple of minutes of Agent Karl and Agent Nathan talking about randomness, which I tune out, until I hear my name again. "Agent Ken, give them their tour now please." I nod, and I step out of the office without a word. The three of them follow silently behind me, until Agent Jane speaks up.
"So, Agent Ken, how long have you been residing in these headquarters?" She asks, politely.
"Since my parents passed away." I say. Apparently these people don't remember me, even though I was really close to their son before they transferred headquarters eight years ago. I turn around so I'm looking at the three of them, I continue walking, but backwards. "Since I was two years old."
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that," Jane says, sympathetically.
Carter looks at me like her wants to say something, but he doesn't say anything. I turn back around. Not because I can't walk backwards and navigate the building at the same time, which I totally can. I know this place like the back of my hand. Actually, scratch that, I know it better than I know my hand. I barely know the back of my hand. Like seriously, who sits around studying the back of their hand. I turn around because I can't handle Nathan and Jane's sympathetic expressions, and Carter's knowing one when we won't say anything.
After another forty-five minutes of the tour, I decide to take a break, and I show them to the main cafeteria to eat.
As I'm walking out of the cafeteria to go find Agent Erica, Carter grabs my arm from out of no where. "Mckennlee, I want to talk to you," he says.
"Tonight, floor B, room four-hundred and fifty-one. I'll be there." I rip my arm from his grasp and continue on my way.
"Oh yeah, and by the way my name is Ken, nobody calls me Mckennlee anymore." I say after I walk a few feet away.
