Axton’s knee wouldn’t stop shaking as he takes note of the time displayed on his wristwatch for the nth time.
It's been 15 minutes past the time he was supposed to meet with his friend, Dalia, at their favorite cafe. And it’s bugging him that she’s not yet here. Of course, it’s normal for Dalia to squeeze in a lot of things in her schedule to the point that different events start to overlap. When they were still college students, she was known to either be overscheduled with tons of stuff or have nothing in her schedule thus fall into a series of messiness and procrastination. It’s never in between.
At first, Axton never saw productivity in Dalia’s ways. A schedule is always there to be followed and it should be always filled up with just the right amount of activities. But he saw how she always enjoyed filling up her schedule with fundraising events, visits to the sick, area immersions, and things that pertained to giving service to others. Dalia, or how Axton likes to call her, Lia may be quiet most of the time, choosing to stay with her own thoughts when around people, but she still finds the joy in helping others. It's weird yet intriguing. And Axton's curiosity got the best of him which ultimately led them to become friends even until now.
When he started medical school, Lia also started taking up her Master’s in Clinical Psychology. Now that she is a registered psychologist and while Axton is finishing his residency, they both still find time to see each other even if it may have to be short.
A cup of black coffee with two packets of sugar placed on a saucer is suddenly placed in front of the man breaking him out of his thoughts. Axton looks up to see the owner of the cafe place it there. “What’s up, Doc?” he asks, smirking at the customer.
Axton chuckles and nods his head in thanks. “Haha, very funny, Fares” he mutters and opens one packet of sugar before dunking its contents in the hot coffee.
Fares stands straight and looks at the door before facing his customer again. “You’re waiting for your lady friend?”
“Lia must be running late again.”
“Well, if I were you,” Fares starts, placing a hand beneath his chin as he thinks, “I would actually just leave then.”
Axton furrows his eyebrows and throws the other man an incredulous look. “What? Why would I do that?”
“You’re a busy man!” he answers, “A doctor finishing his residency! I’m sure that you don’t have that many breaks and you’re wasting your time waiting for someone-”
“Well, she’s my friend,” Axton cuts him off, still in disbelief with the ridiculous idea Fares is telling him. “I made time to see her and I’m sticking with whatever I planned for today.”
Fares nods in assent and tilts his head as he shrugs nonchalantly. “Okay, I see, I see. Hm, that’s a lot of effort for a friend.”
“Of course, she’s special to me-”
“Oh, so she’s someone special to you now? A second ago you were saying that she’s just a friend,” Fares says, his tone of voice hinting at his teasing.
“I-No, I mean, yes. W-Well, n-not really! How...how could I-I tell?” Axton stammers his way into finding a way to reply as Fares continues to knowingly smirk down at him.
The door to the cafe then opens and a woman panting for air rushes inside exclaiming, “Ax! I’m so, so sorry I’m late!”
Axton breathes out a deep sigh of relief, happy to know that Lia is finally here, and Fares takes it as his cue to leave. Well, he leaves with some last words. “Food for thought, Doc,” he whispers and goes back to his post behind the counter.
Lia takes a seat across Ax and fixes her hair which does not give her the chance to see the man try to cool down his flushed cheeks with one swig of piping hot coffee (which was a bad idea since it burned his tongue). She gasps, “You ordered without me?” She gapes at him feeling betrayed.
Ax coughs and shakes his head. “No, no.” he clarifies. “Fares gave it to me. Although I know that he’s going to ask for my payment after.”
“Not surprised,” Lia mutters breathlessly and laughs softly. “I’m sorry again for being late.”
Ax waves a hand at her in dismissal. “Not surprised,” he repeats causing Lia to laugh again. “Did you overschedule again?”
“No, actually. I was with my client and she was really opening up to me so I did not want to be rude and make her stop because she was going past the time of her appointment.”
“You’re a really nice person, Lia. Your clients are lucky to have you.” Ax smiles at her and the words of Fares run through his mind again. Of course, Lia is someone special to him. They got each other’s back and have helped each other through thick and thin. And now that he realizes it, he’s so used to having her around that imagining a life without her is impossible.
“Ax, Doctor Axton rather, your patients are luckier to have you as their doctor,” she counters. “And you’re more organized than me. That speaks volumes about who you are compared to me.”
“Yeah, right,” Ax scoffs playfully and reaches inside his bag hanging over the back of his chair. “Here,” he brings out his thick planner and places it on the table before opening it to the page of this month, “I want you to check my schedule. It’s not as organized as it used to be when we were in college.” He moves his coffee to the side and slides over his planner in front of Lia. “Check it out,” he tells her, resting his arms on top of the table.
Lia takes the planner in her hands and reads through its written contents for the month. She notices the word ‘duty’ on almost every box that signifies a date in the month and the number of hours each duty would last. She won’t deny it, it makes her happy that Ax always makes time to see her despite his 12-hour or 36-hour shifts at the hospital. As much as she knows that he wants to rest on his own, he still insists to see her. That’s why she always feels guilty every time she wastes his time by being late. As she continues to go through his planner, she notices that there are some dates that are colored in red and it makes her grow puzzled as they are the dates that she knows all too well.
“Ax?” she asks softly, “What’s with these dates that are colored in red?” She looks up to meet his eyes.
“O-Oh,” Ax stutters, catching her question off-guard. “Um, those are the dates we agreed to see each other on.”
Lia sharply exhales and shakes her head in disbelief. “R-Really? Why red?”
“You said that it was the most eye-catching color,” he answers. “I don’t want to forget or miss those dates so I made sure that they were in red.” Ax leans forward as he asks, “Are you okay? Is something bothering you, Lia?”
“I-uh, I…” her words fall short and she decides to reach into her bag as well to bring out her planner. She opens it to the same month and turns it around before placing it before him. “I also colored the dates we see each other in red,” she explains in a whisper, feeling shyer with the uncanniness brought by the situation.
And she’s right. Aside from the endless notes at the side of the pages which threw Ax off a bit, the dates they agreed to see each other are in red as his. “Astounding,” he utters in awe. “Who would have thought?”
“I know right?” Lia shyly places some locks of hair behind her ear. “Maybe it comes off natural in our nature already. I just…” she trails off. “I mean...I never expected it. These dates are important to me, Ax. You always make time for me and I find rest in you-”
“I find rest in you, too,” Ax interrupts her but in a gentle manner. Lia peers into his eyes and holds her gaze. Both of them are blushing hard by now but they cannot find it in themselves to break the look they are giving each other. They both know now that whatever they’ve been looking for was just right in front of them the whole time.
Keeping his gaze on her, Ax clears his throat and asks Lia a question that catches her breath and sweeps her off her feet, “For the next time we see each other, do you perhaps want to treat it…like a real date?”
