New Jersey

Scorch Trials Fanfiction following the plot but with a little Zombieland twist.

New Jersey loves helping others, cause in a world without humanity, one must take every chance to show it. Though her tactics are a little odd, her hearts in the right place. We hope.

Third Person
Thomas and his group took refuge in the crumbling city for the night. Winston's condition wasn't getting any better after their first encounter with the Cranks. As the group started to settle for the night a female Crank came towards them.

"Up! Guys up!" Thomas yelled as they spotted the woman. Frypan gabbed the gun Winston had kept and raised it at her. His finger on the trigger she quickly stopped her advance, realising they were other humans.

"Wait, wait, wait!" The Crank yelled, as she held up her hands in surrender. The others looked at each other confused and unsure. She reached to the top of her face and pulled. It came away to reveal a dark skinned, human face.

"It's just a mask." She said as she showed them in the light of their torches. They looked at it in confusion and disgust.

"If you look and smell like them, they can't tell you're there. It's a neat trick, I've spent four hours in a pack of them before I found a good place to spend the night, it's fucking disgusting, but it works." She said with a proud smile, as the others relaxed slightly, but still kept up their guard, though the gun was now lowered. She lowered the mask and shoved it carelessly into her satchel at her side. She looked back up at the group and smiled. Newt was busy looking where she'd shoved the realistic mask.

"What's it made of?" He asked pointing at her bag, talking about the mask. The girl looked to him.

"Uh" She chuckled slightly, "You really don't wanna know." She said rubbing the back of her neck with a sheepish smile. They shivered in understand and disgust.

"Hey. You gotta do what ya gotta do. Out here everything goes." She said shrugging. The others cringed as Thomas shook it off and asked,

"Who are you? What do you want?" He asked in weariness as he eyed her suspiciously.

"First I don't do names, you get too attached and out here you never know when someones gonna die on you. So I call people after where they're from, or where they're headed. I'm New Jersey, born and raised, as it was taken over by the flare." She added as she shrugged sadly. The others looked at her in a little pity.

"As to the second question. Me and my current friend Vegas were just passing through and stopped for supplies." She said lightening up a bit.

"Where y'all comin' from?" She asked them as she gestured to their group.

"We'd rather not say." Minho said in a guarded way. The girl looked at them with a smirk as she assessed them up and down. The gladers shyed from her penetrating stare.

"Not been long in the scorch, have you?" She asked with a knowing smirk. She seemed to know what she was talking about as she put pieces together in her mind.

"No." Thomas answered for them, slightly guarded. Her smirk only widened.

"I knew you were all to clean and sane for that." She said as she walked towards them and began to walk around them, in a slow circle.

"Let me guess." She said with a pause as she finished her circle, once again, standing in front of the group, having put the clues together.

"You're from Wickd." She said with a proud smirk. The groups eyes widened in shock, unsure of how she had guessed.

"How'd you know?" Aris asked her in shock as he side stepped one of the others to be seen and heard. She laughed a little quite proud of actually getting it right.

"Bout my age, haven't spent much time in the Scorch, and I think I met a couple of your friends about a week ago, a couple girls. Also escapies from Wickd. Nice girls they are, took me back to the Right Arms safe haven for a while, before we parted ways again." She said with a kind, reminiscent smile as she stared off into the dark of the building. Aris looked at her with sudden hope.

"What were their names?" He asked quickly, hoping it could be his friends from his maze, hoping at least some of them had made it.

"Sorry kid, I don't do names." She said generally sorry, as she crossed her arms. Aris hopes dropped.

"Whats goin' on here Jersey?" Vegas asked as he came up behind her, drawing the group's attention to the new stranger. She smiled over her shoulder at the tall, bald, older, man.

"Just talkin' to my new friends, they're from Wickd." She said as she turned to talk to Vegas, explaining her new find with light hearted joy.

"Hey, you said the girls took you to the Right Arm." Thomas called out catching Jersey's attention again. She turned to face their group again as Vegas seemed to get bored instantly.

"Yup, right after I saved their lives. Why? That where you're headin?" She asked as she crossed her arms again with a slight smile and curious tilt of her head.

"Yeah. If you could show us the way, that'd be nice." Newt answered for the group as they all shook their heads in agreement. Jersey looked from the group to Vegas, in question. Vegas shrugged clearly still disinterested.

"It's not my decision. I'm just hitchin' a ride with you." He said in explanation. Jersey shrugged and nodded.

"I'll do you guys one better. I'll drive you there." She said with a smile.

"You have a car?" Teresa asked as she looked at her in wonder and shock. New Jersey nodded proudly.

"Yup! Her names Tracy, I don't go anywhere without her." She said in a joking tone, chuckling as she found humour in her own quip, though no one else did.

"So you'll take us all the way there?" Newt asked wearily, eyeing her, not quite sure what to make of all that had recently transpired. They had thought they were safe, but weren't. Now who could they trust?

"Yeah sure. It'll be nice to see the others again. Plus I'm goin' that way to drop Vegas off at a Ravenger's place." She said shrugging, like it was no big deal. Thomas' group looked between each other, and spoke in hushed whispers on whether or not to trust her. Finally they came to a decision.

"Alright. Thanks." Thomas said to her in finality. She smiled at them and then turned on her heels.

"Alrighty then. Collect your things we're leaving now." She said over her shoulder as she began to walk off into the darkness, Vegas at her side. Thomas and his group quickly grabbed their things and hurried after Jersey and Vegas, grateful for the lift out of this hell hole.
