Chapter 1

Trial, a test of the performance, qualities, or suitability of someone or something.
Maze, a network of paths and hedges designed as a puzzle through which one has to find a way.

Emmeline's P.O.V//All aged around 14/15
"Thomas, you know this is wrong! Teresa, you're my sister?! Newt, I thought you agreed with me?" I said as I stood with Thomas, Teresa and Newt, in Teresa and I's shared room.

"Look I'm not saying what wicked is planning isn't wrong. I'm just saying fighting them head on isn't a good idea. Remember last time? They tasered you and you couldn't remember your own name for a week." Newt stressed as he stepped closer to me, placing a hand on my shoulder in comfort. I looked up at the taller, British Blonde, I called my closest friend, and more.

I sighed in annoyance as Teresa and Thomas both averted their gaze to elsewhere in the room, not meeting my eyes. I glared at the words embroidered in black on the left of our matching, white clothes. They looked like doctors scrubs, and it made my shiver.

"Look love, there's not much we can do from in here. All we can do is hope they find a cure soon, and that it's not as bad as we think it's gonna be." He said as he moved his hand from my shoulder, draping his arm over them instead. I leant into his side with an angry huff. Newt always said it was adorable when I was angry. Like an angry puppy. I unfolded my crossed arms and wrapped them around his waist, breathing in his scent, the jingle of a bell sounding in the quiet room. His embrace calmed me and that annoyed me, because I was trying to make a point!

"I'm sorry Em, but I think what wicked is doing is necessary. The world needs a cure and we may hold the key." My twin sister Teresa said as she placed a hand on my shoulder as I looked at her from the comfort of Newts arms. I raised my hand up to where hers sat place mine over hers, they small bell attached to a silver chain around my wrist jingled as I did so. I looked to her eyes to find her smiling softly, and sadly at me, her eyes holding sympathy for me.

"I know. But why us? Why this way? Surely there's a better way." I stressed, keeping my voice level this time, having realised yelling wasn't worth it. They weren't gonna listen anyway.

"I know it's hard. Especially for the both of you." Teresa said as she looked from me to Newt, who tightened his hold on me. He was going to be one of the first to enter the new Maze Trial. They had started it up elsewhere as well, multiple branchs, conducting the same experiment. A Maze full of all one gender to subject their minds to stress, to see how they reacted, to gage if it had anything to do with some of us having immunity to the Flare.

"But it's for the good of the world. Sacrifices have to be made. I'm sorry." Teresa finished as she slide her hand out from under mine and turned, leaving the room. I watched her go silently, sad and annoyed that she didn't see what they were planning was wrong, even if Newt wasn't going to be put in, I'd still fight it, the I had three weeks ago, when they'd told us, 'In two months we'll begin. Alby, Newt, Gally, Minho. You will be the first group sent up', it had made me so angry. They were gonna tear away my friends and the man I loved and throw them into a Maze death trap.

I looked back to Thomas, who had been awfully quiet. I reluctantly pulled from Newts arms and walked to his bestfriend.

"Thomas, what do you think?" I asked as I stopped in front of him. I had pulled him from though as his head jerked up and his eyes widened a moment as they met mine. I looked into his brown eyes with a pleading look. If I could him to side with me, he could sorely persuade my sister, she'd always had a thing for him. His eyes darted from mine to his bestfriend who stood behind me.

"I don't. I don't know." He finally said as he looked back to me, his eyes apologetic, before turned and left the room. I sighed in defeat, and slowly turned to face Newt, my head down.

"Come here love." Newt called softly in his accent. It was one of my favourite pet names he called me, that and Darling. I walked straight into his open arms as he wrapped them around me tightly, resting his head on top of mine. I fully relaxed into him, my head buried in his chest as I lazily wrapped my arms around his waist, just breathing. Newt moved backwards until he sat of my bed, bringing me with him, I sat, straddling him, my knees on the bed on either side of his legs, as I moved to nuzzle my head in the crook of his shoulder, inhaling his scent.

"Everything's gonna be okay love." He whispered softly into my hair as he held me as close as he could, our bodies flush, not in a sexual way, but in a comforting way.

"I don't want to lose you." I whispered against his skin as tears began to fill my eyes. "You'll forget me. And how much I love you." I said as the tears began to fall against his neck.

"Hey, hey, hey." He said as he leaned back so he could look at my face. I kept my eyes down, feeling like a child. He swept my hair behind my ears and cupped my face, raising it to look at him.

"I will never stop loving you. Even if I don't remember you. It just means I get the chance to fall in love with you all over again." He said as a few stray tears escaped his eyes and ran down his cheeks, as he rested his forehead against mine. I closed my eyes and let a small smile grace my lips at his words.

"I love you, more than there are stars in the sky." I said as I chuckled at my corniness.

"I." Newt kissed the tip of my nose and I giggle opening my eyes to see his big brown ones watching me with a smile.

"Love." He kissed my cheek, "You." He kissed my other cheek. "More." He whispered as he hovered over my lips with hooded eyes. My eyes slipped closed as he closed the gap between our lips in a soft kiss that left tingles lingering on my skin. I would miss every part of him.

When the following morning rolled around and Teresa and I had completed our morning routines, we headed to the cafeteria to get breakfast with the others. There wasn't to many of us, a lot of other boys kept in a separate living quarters on the other side of the building. I grabbed a tray, placeing a bottle of orange juice, a piece of toast and some scrambled eggs onto the plate on it, before making my way to our usual table.

I sat down beside Newt, Thomas on his other side and Minho oppisite him, Alby and Gally beside him. We all tended to stick together, though Thomas, Teresa and I, were the only ones that worked for Wicked, the others were all kinda, just, subjects, I suppose.

"Morning love. How're ya feeling?" Newt asked as he smiled softly at me. I smiled back and kissed his cheek.

"I'm good thanks." I said sweetly, before turning to the others as Teresa sat down beside Thomas. The room hummed with conversation, two other tables of boys with about six at each table, chatted amongst themselves, while eating breakfast.

"How is everyone?" I asked carefully, worried how the others were taking the news of being first to get put in the Maze Trail. Minho shrugged his shoulders as he stuffed a forkful of eggs into his mouth.

"Dunno? Pissed, I guess." He said, his face in a glare at no one in particular. Yes, pissed was probably accurate considering he had been the one to physically try to fight the guards with me when Janson had announced their impending doom.

"Nervous, angry, betrayed." Gally stated honestly as he focused on the food on his plate, though he didn't seem to be eating anything, just shifting it around with his fork. Guilt washed over me. Even though I didn't agree with Wicked's methods and I'd tried to stop them and change their minds, I still worked for them. I was part of the team who was putting them into the death trap they called the Maze Trails.

"Unprepared." Was Alby's reply. He was a little older than most of us. Teresa and I were 14, Newt, Thomas, Gally and Minho 15, and Alby 16. The others I wasn't as close with, were all roughly around that age too.

"It's all for a good cause. We could discover the cure and save the world, thousands of lives, spared because of your sacrifice." Teresa said with a soft smiled as she looked to the boys. They stared at her with deadpan looks and I rolled my eyes. A sudden thought struck me and I quickly shovelled my eggs down and sculled my juice, leaving my toast on my plate as I quickly stood. The others all looked to me.

"I'll be back. There's something I've gotta do." I said as I smiled down at Newt. He looked up at me in concern before he grabbed my hand.

"Don't do anything rash." He warned as he placed a kiss to the back of my hand. I beamed at him, confident in my choice. I leaned down and kissed him quickly on the lips before stepping over the white bench that we'd been sitting on, and marching across the room towards the door.

I made my way down the hall towards the main control room. I entered to find people already hard at work for the day. I scanned the room before my eyes landed on Ava Paige. I made my way over to her glass office and tapped on the open door. She looked up at me, her blonde hair tied up in a bun at the back of her head, making her look very different from her usual loose waves.

"What is Emmeline?" Ava asked as she looked up at me seriously. I stepped into her office and closed the sound proof glass door behind me.

"I want to enter the maze with the others." I stated as I looked her dead in the eyes. She held my gaze with a blank look before looking back down at the paperwork she was reading over.

"No." She said as she looked back down, shuffling the page to the bottom of the pile as she began to read over the next. My mouth dropped open and my brows dropped into a frown. I quickly made my way over to her desk and sat in the chair oppisite her.

"Why not?" I demanded as I watched her. She didn't even look up as she answered.

"Because, I know you only want to enter the Trail because you little boyfriend was chosen as one of the first." She said as she signed the the bottom of the page she was reading over, moving on to the next. My brows furrowed further as I felt annoyed. Of course that's the reason, but what's wrong with that?

"So? What's wrong with wanting to go with him?" I asked as I crossed my arms across my chest and glared at her. She still didn't look up from her paperwork as she sighed.

"It's not happening Emme. Now leave, I have work to do, and so do you." Emme, the nickname only Ava used for me. I huffed. She's not even paying attention to me and what I'm saying, so I took another approach, one that was more likely to appeal to her nature.

"You get another test subject, a girl no less, and it will give you different results, unique ones, because there will be a mix of gender and therefore very different reactions to everything that takes place in the maze." I said as I raised as brow at her and straightened in my seat, showing I was serious and dedicated. Ava paused her writing and looked up at me. I held her gaze and remained perfectly still, no matter how much her gaze made my want to cower in the corner. She finally looked back down at her papers with a sigh.

"Fine." She said and I almost thought I'd heard her wrong. A huge smile over took my features and I stood from the chair.

"You're not going to regret this." I said happily as I practically skipped around the chair and towards the door.

"Sure I won't." I heard Ava whisper under her breath. I chuckled as I pulled open the door to her office and made my way to my usual station to begin my days work.
