All You Need is a Little Hope

A baby is born in the maze, yup I decided to play that appalling cliche, I just love writing stories using elements I hate. For some twisted reason it makes me laugh.

Where it all began.
'I was the first girl in the glade and it caused a lot of chaos, especially when, upon arrival I had remembered, not just my name, but also my brothers, Minho. To say they didn't trust me was an understatement. They threw me in the slammer for a whole week. I was fed through the slots and my only company was my brother. Minho visited as often as he could to simply talk to me. It came as naturally as breathing. We were siblings after all.

When they finally let me out, I was given the standard. A tour, a run down of the rules and a hammock in the sleeping quarters. I went through the trials for the jobs, yadda, yadda, ya. And we discovered I was great at medicine and I became the keeper of the Med-Jacks. I wasn't the only girl for long, as two others followed me up the next two months. Amelia and Anya.'

Frida's P.O.V

"Frida!" I paused my writing and looked up from my seat against a tree. I spotted Anya waving at me as she jogged to a halt in front of me. I slammed the leather bound book the creators had, oh so generously, given me and tucked it away in my large, pants pocket.

"Whats up Anya?" I asked as I squinted up at her the sun directly in my eyes. She stepped to the right and blocked the sunlight for me. I smiled greatfully, but she only returned it with a look of concern.

"Amelia's sick, they can't figure out what's wrong with her." Anya said with a small frown. I looked down a moment, my brows creased. I lifted up my hand towards Anya.

"Help me up?" I said lightly with a sigh as she gripped my hand and helped haul me to my feet. I dusted my hands on the back of my pants to remove any dirt there.

"You can head back to the kitchens, I'll deal with Amelia." I said as she nodded her head at me, and took off back towards the kitchen to help Frypan. It wasn't that I didn't like Amelia, it was just that we didn't always see eye to eye. She tended to push things too far without realising who, or what she was damaging before it was to late. I quickly made my way to the Med hut and was greeted by the sound of heaving. I entered the room the sound was coming from, to see Amelia bent over a bucket on the ground, Clint changing the bed sheets from the cot behind her and Jeff kneeling on the floor, rubbing her back and holding her hair up.

"What's going on?" I asked as I looked between the two med jacks, and the heaving girl on the floor, pushing the vile smell from my thoughts.

"We're not sure. She just came in and started throwing up." Jeff said as he looked at the girl with pitty.

"Feverish?" I asked as I knelt down beside her and pressed the back of my hand to her forehead. Jeff shook his head at me as Clint disappeared behind us, taking the sheets to the Sloppers.

"None." Jeff said as I nodded, pulling my hand back. He was right, there was no present fever. It was odd, usually the stomach bug was accompanied by a fever. Amelia stopped reaching and Sat back on her heels, looking utterly exhausted. I furrowed my brows in curiosity.

"Move to the bed and keep an eye on her. Don't let anyone in. The last thing we need is a stomach bug out brake." I said as I stood again. Jeff nodded and helped the weak Amelia to a clean cot. I picked up the filled bucket and covered my nose and mouth with my elbow as I held it at arms length and exited the shack. I walked it the short distance to the forest line and tipped it out, before heading to the side of the Med hut, turning on the tap that stuck up out of the ground, rinsing the bucket. I placed it beside Amelia's bed.

"I'm gonna let Alby know." I said, "You alright here?" I asked as I gestured to Amelia's sleeping form, with my head. Jeff nodded and placed a water filled cup beside her bed.

"Yeah, I'm good. Clint'll be back any second." He pointed out and I nodded, leaving the Med hut and wandering across to the Gardens, Newt usually knew where to find Alby.

"Hey Newton!" I said with a bright smile, as I stopped beside him. He looked up at me with a mock glare at the nickname, leaning on the end of his shovel.

"Frida." He said in way of greet as I grinned at him. He rolled his eyes and then smiled back. "What's up?" He asked as he stabbed the shovel into the ground then pulled it out, simply fiddling.

"Do you know where Alby is?" I asked as I glanced around the Glade, a hand up to block the sun from my eyes. It was my day off, I really didn't want to be doing much but, relaxing in the sun.

"Yeah, he's in the Deadheads helping Gally and the Builders cut down a couple trees. Says the support beams of the Ho.estead are looking worn." Newt said as he pointed towards the deadheads. I tended not to go in there without good reason. It was dark and cold, and a burial ground, plus, no one could see what happens out there. Not that I don't trust most of the boys here, I just don't wanna push it.

"Thanks!" I called out to Newt as I had already started to walk away, towards the woods. He didn't reply as I entered the dark tree covered area of the Glade. I trudged not to far before I could hear all the noise from the boys working in Deadheads. I emerged into a little clearing in time to watch a huge, branch smash to the ground below, the tree nearly bare of branches, a bare wooden pole standing amounst the trees.

"Hey Alby!" I called out as I spotted the boy on the other side of the clearing, directing one of the boys, who was suspended from ropes, being lowered back to the ground by a group of boys. Alby looked across the clearing and spotting my, nodded his head in greeting. I made my way around and over the huge branches the lay scattered around the clearing.

"What's Frida?" He asked, looking back up at the boy still being slowly lowered from the top last few branches. Gally stood behind Alby, an axe in hand his shirt off and tied around his waist. I nodded in greeting to him and he nodded back.

"Amelia's sick. Could be the bug, but we're nor sure yet." I said as I to looked up at the boy now stopped halfway down the tree, a large saw swiping back and forth against the trunk. Alby looked to me and I met his eyes.

"Whose she had contact with? Ben okay?" Alby asked, know as well as anybody else, that Ben and Amelia were together, and if she was sick, he'd probably be next. I shrugged my shoulders.

"Not back from the maze yet, so I'd say his fine, but quarantine him anyway. Just wanted to let you know, that the bug might be goin around." I said as he nodded his head in thanks. I turned back around and made my way back across the ckearing and out of the Deadheads, heading for the Med Hut, they'd need the extra help.
