Chapter Twenty Six

Millie's POV

"I don't know what you want me to say."  He'd caged me against the wall, his palms spread beside my head. He was so close yet so far.

Underneath my palms I could feel the rhythmic beating of his heart. It calmed me, made me feel alive yet safe. Damien was a stranger hit it felt like we were two ancient souls that had been united after an eternity.

"Tell me you'll give me a chance to show you I'm serious...that I mean it when I say I want to be with you." He said, breathing hard as if he was trying to control himself.

"I told you. I can't...Damien please.." I begged.

"Give me a chance, if I fuck it up...I'll leave you alone for good. I swear to you Mami." He said, pulling back to look into my eyes. I couldn't bare the intensity of his gaze.

My heart shattered like glass as I uttered my next words. " I'm sorry but I can't...you just don't understand."

"Then make me understand Mami. Tell me why you can't be with me."

"I- I...I think I'm engaged." I blurted out. I'll admit it hurt when he pulled away from me like I was a plague.

"I- I...I don't understand."

"Let me explain."

So I told him everything.. about me waking up in the hospital, meeting Gwen, about the ring. I told him I'd come to find out anything I could about the ring. It was my only shot at regaining a semblance of my identity.

He looked genuine confused.

"Wow... t- that's.. a lot to take in." He stammered. Despite the gravity of the situation, I internally squealed at how adorable his stammer was.

"I know..but now you understand why I can't be with you. I'm promised to another." My voice wavering.

"Can I see the ring?" He asked, catching me off guard. I definitely wasn't expecting that. The silver ring gleamed in the sunlight as he examined it.

I couldn't determine what he was feeling. His poker face was good. "Mami, I'm going to ask you this once and I need an honest answer.

If you weren't engaged...if there wasn't anything stopping you...would you agree to be with me?"

In that moment his reputation didn't matter. He was just a man asking me to be honest with him.
"Yes." A soft whisper escaped me.

Before I could blink, he'd turned around running, taking with him the only piece of who I was. I watched his rest resting figure as tears rolled down my face. That's what I get for trusting someone like him.

Jessa's POV
Opening my eyes to blurry shapes, I tried blinking.

"Alright, frog face here is awake and alive. Hence I think it's time I return to my actual job..you know..the one I get paid for?" A sassy voice said.

Erm...frog face?? What???

Ah hand came in my vision. Grabbing it, I hauled myself off the ground, groaning when my head ached.

"Well...not a very good first impression, huh?" A kind voice said. A petite blonde haired woman with black rimmed glasses stared at me, eyes full of amusement.

Dusting myself off, I gave her a sheepish smile. She was dressed in...well pink everything?  I'd never seen one person wear so much pink in my whole life.

"I...uhm.... I'm sorry..I-"

"Don't worry about it. Happens all the time." She said, flashing a perfect set of pearly whites.

No it doesn't! My first shot at getting a job and I blow it. I had an urge to smack my own head.

"Oh okay...hun...thanks." I cursed myself for being unable to make coherent sentences.

"So I'm guessing you're Jessa? I'm Lucy. Cece spoke to me concerning the job?" She said, offering her hand.

"Ah yes...the interview...I..well I don't suppose there's still time is there? I missed it." I said, frustrated. At this point I was convinced the cosmic universe was against me.

How can one person have this much bad luck? Fate was definitely out to get me!

"Tell you what..we've got a few ingredients left. It's not much but...it's enough for you to whip up something." She said. Hope blossomed in my chest like a flower blooming.

Putting on an apron, I stared at the ingredients before me. She was right. It wasn't much but it'd have to do. Working with such mediocre ingredients as hard enough.

On top of that I had to deal with the constant glaring of some weirdo with bright green hair who had an uncanny resemblance to one of the aliens that escaped Ben ten's watch.

Okay so I was being a tad bit mean. You try making a pie with shaky hands. The constant ticking of the clock wasn't helping either. With my thirty minutes up, I cut up my pie. I put the plates on the counter for my "judges".

Lucy and the alien girl picked up forks and dug in. "Wow...Jessa this is amazing." Lucy said.
My heartbeat picked up. Maybe...just maybe, all hope was not lost. Or so I thought.

"Ew.. what the hell is this? I wouldn't even feed this to my neighbor's cat and I hate that cat." Alien girl said.

Until then!

A loud silence dominated the car ride back to Alec's mansion. I think even Thomas could sense I was in a bad mood as he was usually chatty in the evenings. Exhaustedly, I dragged my body into the house.

Dahlia was nowhere to be seen which was odd. I kicked off my shoes, groaning in relief. Giving up on looking for Dahlia, I headed to my room.

Alec probably wasn't at home so I was safe. As my mind drifted to the dark haired man, my mood worsened. He was probably a thousand miles away wishing he could put more distance between us.

Yet here I was wishing with every part of my being that I could be with him. Foolish of me, I know. The eerie silence in the house had my footsteps echoing loudly.

Getting to the top of the glass stairs, I spotted a puddle of red coppery liquid on the tiled floors. Blood! Fear crept in my heart as Hailey's dead body flashed in my mind.

Blood trails leading to...my room? Wait, my room? I dropped everything and ran to my room. Alec lay on my bed, blood stained...well everything.

"Oh my God! Alec! Alec! Please no! Not you!" I rushed to his side, desperate to make sure he was alive. I grabbed his wrist.

A pulse.

That was enough to soothe me. "Alec wake up! We have to get you to a hospital." I shook his body. His eyes fluttered.

"No...no hospital. You can't...can't take me there..."

"What? I have to take you there. You'll bleed out! Alec you'll die! Do you understand that you can die if you keep bleeding out like this!"

"Two bullets....get em' out.....I'll...be fine." He whispered.

I sat on the floor staring at him as he slept. Even then he looked troubled. It had taken me...I didn't even know how long I'd been with him. Alec had been shot...twice.

I didn't know why or how or who shot him. I'd refrained find changing hun lest he awake up and get angry at me for touching him more than I needed to. The midnight moon flashed its light through the window, dusting the place with its silvery glow.

Damien's POV
"For the last time Damien, I am not going on this picnic." Alec yelled, the vein in his neck throbbing angrily. The chatter in the room quietened down..

"Come on! Cece really want you to come. " I argued. It didn't faze me. For years Alec has isolated himself from everyone, sometimes even Cece. I realized it was an after effect of what Jessa did.

"Damien, it's a fucking church. Everyone there either hates me or is terrified of me. No one wants "the beast" around to ruin Easter."

"So skip the church part. Just come to the picnics at the end. Spend some time with Cece." I pushed. He turned away from me and continued shooting at the practice dummy. Alec actually had no reason to practice.

The guy could practically shoot with his eyes closed and still not miss the target.

"I'm not going."

"Come on man. Cece looked so heartbroken when you said you wouldn't be there. Think about Aaliyah...and little Agnes who's been dying to see her uncle." I saw a semblance of a smile on his face before it was wiped away.

"Fine. Whatever I'll be there. Just shut up." He yelled. Content with his otherwise rude response, I grabbed my own gun. Facing the practice dummy, i aimed for his head.

"So...when are you going to stop avoiding Jessa?" I asked Alec. He groaned loudly eliciting a laugh from me.

"Can't a man shoot in peace?!" He asked looking at me exasperatedly.

"Can't ask have a conversation with his best friend?"

"Fine. I'll stop avoiding her when you stop avoiding Millie." He said dropping the hun and walking out of the room.

My mood was officially ruined. I'd been avoiding Mami for a week now and it was the hardest thing I'd ever done. I wouldn't be able to avoid her on Sunday though.

Cece wanted us all in church. Easter was a big thing to her and i didn't really have much of a choice when it came to that woman. I was avoiding Mami because I couldn't for the life of me think of what I could possibly say to make things right.

That day in the market, we had a moment. And I screwed it up...big time. I'd played the conversation so many times in my head and no matter what I'd say i knew she'd never give me a chance.

I took the only thing tying her to her identity right after she opened up to me. But the thought of her being with someone else scared me more. The ring wasn't just a way for her to figure out who she was. It was a one way ticket out of my life and into another man's.

Call me selfish but I'd rather she stay with me than for her to get married to some dude. Mami was mine. Only mine.
