Hope
"This S stands for hope, son. This symbol we wear on our chests gives people hope at the sight of it."
Jon's fingers ran over the S on his father's suit. It helped to just feel it sometimes. And imagine his dad's warm chest was still under it and he could feel the thud of his heart beat.
"I can't do this anymore Clark!"
"When something bad happens, and they see this, no matter how bad things get, there's always that bit of hope."
The boy tried to focus on the precious memory he had rather than the sound of his mother yelling downstairs.
"I can't keep staying up, worrying that you aren't gonna come home!"
The boy's sleeve slipped to reveal the stark white scars and a few red lines on his wrist. His sleeve covered the ones that came up to his elbows along his forearm.
"Hope for the hopeless. It's a miracle to them...."
"I thought after the scare, after you died! Maybe you'd care enough about your family to stay here more often!"
The boy quickly pulled the sleeves down over his hands, concealing the marks. He had to be careful.
"You'll See one day, the look on someone's face when they see it. And they know they are saved."
Now his father's voice came in real life. "I do care Lois! I married you for a reason!"
"Not the right one Clark. Or should I start calling you Kal- El? Since that's who you'd rather be!"
"You know that isn't true!"
"No. I don't know anything anymore." Although her next words came out as a whisper, they rocked Jon Kent's world. "I don't want to love you anymore... I want a divorce."
"Even when times get tough... we have to give them hope."
