chapter two: you're kinda cranky you know

Even though I was a junior it was fairly obvious I didn't get out enough. Carson and Lena, who had conveniently missed the whole scene, were freaking out when I explained what really happened when we got home.

"You're telling me Carter Robinson, soon to be in the NBA draft, dumped a pitcher of punch on you and checked you out?" Lena said with her mouth open.

I gave her a look.

"How is that what you got out of this?" I asked as Carson put my hair in french braids.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah," Carson chimed in. "You think he's an asshole, we get it. But... he's a fine asshole so just this once we can let it slide right?"

"No," I tossed out. "Stop being horny."

***

Monday morning I wandered into my ethics class half asleep. It was only week 2 of classes and I made sure to sit near the back but not too far back. I was a pretty good student but the farther I got away from the board the more tempted I would be to fall asleep.

I leaned forward to grab my laptop and notebook only to be rewarded with a voice that sounded disgustingly familiar.

I peered around casually, or as casually as I could be to find the source and grimaced when I caught him speaking to our professor.

I couldn't make out everything said but I could tell his schedule was switched and he now happened to be in my ethics class.

Which was, really fucking nice for me.

I ducked my head hoping he wouldn't see me and or sit by me but as we know God hates me and decides to torture me at every second.

His friends who sat behind me beckoned him over, but he had already caught sight of me and pointed at me. Male approval ensued and my hands went to my head as he pulled out the chair next to me, carelessly dropping his backpack near mine.

"You know I'm getting the idea you don't want me in your space," he said, taking a seat.

I snorted while avoiding eye contact.

He continued. "And it hurts because I have no idea why."

I hummed in annoyance. But also to cover up a smile. Which made me more annoyed because I had to get the upper hand here. I was not giving him anything to run with.

"Just not a fan of overconfident guys who stalk people and don't know how to shut up."

He leaned back in his chair.

"Me neither, they're the worst," he said.

And unfortunately for me my smile cracked open.

He leaned over to look at my notebook.

"Spencer Thompson," Carter said aloud.

I scowled and snatched it away from him.

"It's only fair, Spencer," said Carter. "You know my name."

"No I don't," I threw back.

He smiled when he said, "Yes, you do."

And I did, but I wasn't giving him the satisfaction.

The professor droned on and on before announcing that we would be placed into groups of 5 at the beginning of the semester in order to do our big final project.

He came over and sectioned us off into huge chunks before walking off and leaving us to introduce ourselves to our groups.

I looked over to Carter and grumbled.

"Spencer, is it really that bad?"

"Yes Carter, it is that bad," I mocked.

"I knew you knew my name," he responded with a grin.

"I kNew YoU KnEw mY naMe," I repeated like a 5 year old.

Annoyed at myself, especially for such a childish retort, I started packing up my stuff, loudly.

"You're kind of cranky, you know."

"No I'm not. I'm very not cranky and it's you who makes me this way," I told him.

"I didn't know I affected you so much," he said, still smiling.

"Oh you wish," I finished, with a silent bitch at the end.

Carter shook his head and grinned at me.

"You going to the beach today?" he asked, shoving his stuff into his bag.

I tucked my hair behind my ear and gave him a look.

"I didn't know that was a planned thing," I told him.

"You should come. A bunch of people are gonna be there."

I sighed before standing up and shoving my chair in. "I barely know you, Carter. And I don't think I'd know anyone there. It'd be boring."

"You can bring your friends, the ones you left the bar with."

I narrowed my eyes at him as he held the door open for me to exit class. "So you can ogle them too?"

He looked down at me, with my arms crossed and a mini ticked off expression. I watched his eyes scan my face before he smiled the most aggravating smile I'd ever seen. "No, Spencer I'll save that for you."

And damn it all to hell, because even though Carter was a problem person it didn't stop my idiot brain from stuttering.
