Chapter Twenty Two

• Arsenio •

"Taking Ezlyn to Paris just to say 'I love you' to her is a bit extra even for you, Arsenio." According to Zenith, my idea was stupid.

I sat on the edge of his desk with him sitting right infront of me in his chair. "We didn't even have a honeymoon, I think this might be the right time."

"Hmm, well, from that perspective it is okay but why Paris? It's so cliche, take her somewhere else like Greece or something."

"Greece sounds good." I agreed with him.

"You can take me along with you. I was planning on visiting Greece." He smiled innocently.

"It will be our honeymoon, not a friend's trip, asshole. You will be staying here and working."

"I am going to write a complaint against you that my boss doesn't give me any vacations, always making me work more than him--"

He stopped his rambling when I raised my fist to punch him making him grin mischievously.

"Where's Ezlyn though?" He changed the topic, glancing at the wall clock. "She should be back by now."

I frowned. Yes, she should be back. It's been hours. I was already not letting her go so far just to buy us lunch, so what that place was not yet doing home deliveries, I could have sent someone else. Why does she has to be so stubborn?

I picked my phone and dialled her number only to be told that her phone was switched off. What the hell?

I dialled it twice more only to receive that same message.

Worry started to trickle in, something is not right.

"Call Marc, ask him to track Ezlyn's mobile phone." I told Zenith and he immediately did what I told him to.

Before Marc could even track her down, my worry came true when I received a call from an unknown number.

"Is this Arsenio Draven?" A feminine voice inquired.

"Yes. Who's this?"

"I am calling from the hospital, Mr Draven and I am sorry to inform you that your wife was in an accident and is in a serious condition."

For a moment I was paralysed. Ezlyn was in an accident? What the fuck?

Zenith was watching me curiously, asking me in a whisper what happened but I couldn't speak.

That lady went on to tell me the address of the hospital and hung up the call.

I could feel a headache forming and Zen got up and grabbed my shoulders. "Will you tell me what happened? You are scaring me."

"Ez...she was in an accident."

"I-it was a small accident, right?"

I shook my head slowly. "The lady said she is in a serious condition."

"Fuck." He muttered. "Then why are we here? Let's go, tell me the hospital's name."

It took me another few seconds to tell him the address and another five minutes to grab Izan from my office where he was sleeping in his crib.

Rest everything was a blur as we rushed to the hospital.

Reaching the hospital, Zen called my parents to inform them about Ezlyn too as we walked to the room where she was being kept.

The doctor met me right outside the room, his lips set into grim lines. He didn't waste any time in coming to the point. "I am sorry but your wife is in coma, Mr Draven."

I exhaled shakily to stop the tears that were threatening to fall. "Does she has a chance to..." I couldn't even voice it out. The possibility of losing Ezlyn was something I couldn't even imagine.

He shook his head slowly. "We have no idea when she will wake up. It can be days or months even. She sustained some serious injuries."

Zenith cut a sad glance at me, his eyes filled with tears.

"And..." The doctor continued to speak, "...your baby couldn't survive the accident, I am sorry to say that."

Another shock ran through me. "B-baby?"

The doctor looked slightly confused. "Your wife was six weeks pregnant but she had an early miscarriage due to the accident."

My knees buckled when that information settled inside me and Zenith placed his palm over my shoulder to steady me.

She was pregnant. We were going to have another baby. But not anymore.

A sob teared through me and I slumped against the wall causing Izan to jerk awake in my arms and he started to cry.

I stared down at him not knowing what to do before Zenith took him from me, gently rocking him back to sleep.

"Our baby..." My mind wondered about what our future would have looked like with another addition to our family and I knew I would have been estatic about it but...all my dreams shattered.

Knowing that we lost our baby was heart breaking but if I have Ezlyn with me we can always try for another one. Ezlyn has to survive at any cost because without her, I'll break.

"It's going to be okay, Arsenio." Zenith consoled me. "She is going to be okay."

I couldn't hear what he was saying. I couldn't even breathe. The room seemed to be spinning, I cradled my head in my palm.

"Hey, hey..." Zenith said frantically, "you are having a panic attack. Look at me, look at me."

I don't remember what happened but when I came to my senses, I was sitting on a chair with Zenith kneeling infront of me, clutching Izan with one hand while with other he gently squeezed my shoulder.

His nose was red which usually happens when he is holding back his tears. "She is going to be okay." He stated firmly. "She will be okay. She is strong, stronger than we know. Understood?"

"And you have to be strong too, for her, for your son." He added, handing Izan back to me. "Izan needs you, okay? You have to be strong for him."

I stared down at my son as his eyes fluttered opened and he let out a yawn, when he saw me, a small smile formed on his lips. Since he was almost four months old, it was now common for him to smile more often.

I smiled back at him through the tears and kissed his forehead lingeringly.

Zenith was still kneeling and he squeezed my hands. "You ready to go see her?"

Was I ready to see my wife, my childhood best friend and the love of my life lying there lifeless? No.

But I nodded nevertheless.

With unsteady steps I made my way inside the room and my heart clenched on seeing her in that condition.

Her face pale with an oxygen mask attached to her nose and mouth, her hands on either side of her body, a machine next to the bed showing her faint heartbeat.

Zenith gave me some privacy and stayed outside and I slowly approached her and slumped down on the stool next to the bed.

Once near I noticed the diagonal wound running across her right cheek which was stitched up.

When Izan saw her, he extended his arms towards her as if he expected that she will take him in her arms.

More tears fell from my eyes on that and I hugged him tightly. "Your mom is sleeping, baby." I kissed the top of his head. "S-she will...wake up soon."

He made some incoherent sounds, still wanting for her to take him and when she didn't, he started to cry loudly.

Not able to help, tears streamed down my eyes too. "Izan, no...stop it." I cried softly.

Zenith must have heard Izan crying for he entered the room and took him in his arms. "I'll handle him and your parents are outside."

Sniffling, I nodded curtly and focused my attention back to Ezlyn.

With a defeated sigh, I rested my forehead on her hand. "Please, wake up, Ez. Please don't torture me like this. I am sorry for how I treated you, I am sorry for everything, just wake up."

"I love you. I love you so much. I am sorry for not saying it earlier. Just wake up." I sobbed pressing a kiss to the back of her hand.

Lifting my head I gazed at her and ran my palm over her belly. "We were going to have another baby, Ez, but it's okay, we can try again but just wake up, my little cupcake."

"Izan misses you, he's crying for you. If not for me then wake up for him, he needs his mother."

It was of no use, she laid still, my words not making a single difference and I hated myself for treating her so badly, for not treating her like my queen, for not giving her the world.

"Please, I beg you." I whispered. "I love you."

Not able to stand seeing her like this anymore, I stood up and leaning down brushed a kiss to her forehead. "I love you, Ezlyn. Please, wake up."

And I brushed another kiss to her belly, caressing it with my thumb.

With my heart feeling empty, I slowly left the room.
