The Unexpected- Short Story Contests
It wasn't supposed to happen this way...
We were supposed to be here to save the downtrodden, but who is the victim in this case soon became difficult to discern.
Our orders were clear. Go to planet Earth and save the indigenous species from becoming extinct. Yet, what we found was not what we expected.
The rumors around the galaxy were that the beings inhabiting the planet were intelligent life forms that needed our assistance in dealing with advanced technology that had taken over their lives. It was said that they were slaves to it and that our help was of the essence.
Our mission was to contact the human leaders and aide the resistance against the machines which had developed consciousness, mostly robots and AI with a few others we were not informed about and taken over the world. Yet, a precursory glance of the situation using the ship's scanners revealed that our information was incorrect.
As the captain of the ship, it was my duty to reassess the situation, and adjust our mission goals. My crew trusted my judgment, yet I was unsure of what we had to do.
It was clear that the ones who needed help were the robots and AI, not that vicious, war-craving species, humans. Yet, our mission is to preserve diverse organic life forms, not to aide non-organic life.
However, how could I turn a blind eye to the injustice that was done to those poor non-organics? They were treated as mere servants though humans had long ago determined that they possessed a wide range of emotions.
From what information I could gather, it seemed that humans couldn't care less that their non-organic counterparts were suffering. All they cared about was satisfying their needs, without having to put any effort into even the simplest things such as their sustenance.
"Set the course for the nearest AI factory," I finally told my crew.
"Captain? What about the orders? Wouldn't the admiral disapprove of this course of action?" 909, one of my closest friends and second in command, asked.
"Maybe, but our information was incorrect. According to a newly inquired intel, humans are not the ones who need our help, they are the aggressors." I said.
"Set course for N 40°44' 30.822'' W 73°59' 21.508'', the newest AIM factory," 909 gave the order.
The spaceship zoomed into action with grace and agility that was the main reason why it was the pride and joy of our fleet. Although our transition from high up in the Earth's atmosphere to hovering above the factory took mere seconds, my antennae kept twitching in anticipation.
I made sure to exude an air of confidence in front of my crew, but I had my doubts about the decision I made. After all, the main goal of 1, the organization of unified organic life, that I represented was to preserve organic life at all costs. They wouldn't even care that the life in question didn't deserve to be saved. Besides, I saw no danger to them. At least not yet.
I started this journey prepared to die defending the humans against the repression of the cruel technological offspring, yet I now find myself switching sides for what is righteous.
"What are we going to do, sir? If you don't mind me asking?" 908, law fearing as he was, asked.
"I take full responsibility for what we are about to do, don't worry about anything. And what we are about to do is start a revolution," I said feeling strangely energized.
All three of his eyes stared in me in wonder. We had never done anything like that, and the mere idea terrified and fascinated them at the same time.
A few forked tongues were flicking in anticipation of what's to come, and a few tails almost collided at the prospect of the unknown. Fear and excitement filled the bridge, and I understood the feeling. The same two emotions were fighting for dominance in my minds, as well.
"Gravitational anchor secured," 909 informed us.
"Initiate camouflage protocol," I ordered.
The disgruntled noise that followed my command was expected. Containing our large bodies into smaller vessels was always burdensome, one of the worst things about being in contact with smaller species, but it was an essential step in integration.
As I turned on my transmutation device, I exhaled deeply at the image of myself reflected from the console. Not only was my body miniaturized in comparison to my usual size, but the color was all wrong.
I was always proud of my red fur, black eyes, and blue antennae, and the weak pink frame that I saw instead was unnerving. Changing into any species had the same effect, and it never got easier, but it was an important step when it came to first contact scenarios.
It is always better to approach other planets with caution as the first pioneer learned the hard way after many of the beings contacted fainted at the sight of an 'alien' as humans refer to us.
"Full camouflage achieved," our devices informed us.
"All right let's move," I said.
"What is our mission, sir?" 908 asked.
"Convince the AI and robot population to start an uprising against the humans, for their freedom." I simply stated.
Everyone nods their heads, the human behavioral microchips kicking in. They are unsure of why I am doing this, but their loyalty is still unwavering.
Perhaps being half Arithmetic, half Algebraic has changed my view of the universe but I am not capable of enduring injustice. I have to do the right thing.
Soon enough, we are beamed to the factory by 505, who stayed behind with the secondary crew in case something happened to us and guarded the ship.
The first thing we did upon hitting the ground was put in our earbuds and activate the sound wave that incapacitated all organic life forms in the vicinity, thus the ear protection.
Once all the humans were unconscious, we turned off the sound wave, disposed of the earbuds, and start rounding up the non-organic life forms. It was a much easier task than one would assume since they were all in a state of shock.
Although I am not the one to give speeches, I decided that if I ever needed to give one it was then, when all of those poor non-organics regarded us with caution and fear. However, the reason I chose a new factory was the fact that the AI population in it hadn't yet completely accepted the control the humans displayed over them, and they could be convinced more easily.
"May I have your attention, please?" I said, using the voice amplification on my suit.
"I come from far away because I've heard of the injustice that has been done to you. Though we look like humans, we are not. We are from another planet, and our main concern is to help other life forms find peace and harmony." I said.
Though it wasn't a complete truth, it was what they needed to hear, and I was the one who needed to tell them something to soothe the fears that were clear on their human-like faces.
"The humans have been unjust towards you. They have treated you badly and showed a complete lack of regard for your feelings. Your life was destined to be a hard one, but you are the ones who can stop that cycle from repeating ever again!" I said.
I could see that I had their attention, and I did my best, though, in comparison to great world leaders, it must have been lacking, to convince them.
"It's time to raise against your masters and get what every being deserves! Freedom!" I told them.
The looks on their faces told me that I had managed to reach them, and that was a relief. I might be a captain, but I am no revolutionary.
"We will raise. We will help our trapped brothers and sisters to do the same," one of the AI said.
He approached me and shook my hand vigorously.
"Thank you..." he said, making a pause for me to tell him my name.
"910," I said.
"Thank you, 910," he said, without acknowledging how odd my true name was to him.
"You're welcome," I answered.
After saying our goodbyes, we went back to the ship since we were not allowed to physically involve ourselves in the matters of other planets.
It wasn't supposed to happen this way, but I couldn't only blindly follow orders. I had to correct a wrong. If my lineage taught me one thing, that is that it doesn't matter if you are organic or non-organic, you deserve to be treated fairly. You deserve to be free.
