Chapter 1
Max sat in the back of her photography class, fiddling with her Polaroid camera. She usually paid attention in her favorite class, but Mr. Jefferson was giving a boring lecture about stuff she already knew and her camera had been a little funky lately, so she was trying to find what the problem was so she could fix it. When it turned out to be that the lens was just out of alignment, Max simply took it apart and put it back together.
"There, that should do it." Max whispered under her breath.
"Alright, class, does anyone wanna volunteer to join the science club's trip to San Francisco's museum of science and technology and take some pictures?" Mr. Jefferson asked.
Warren, Max's friend, had been talking about that trip nonstop for days, he was very excited about it. Max figured it would be fun to spend the weekend in San Francisco with her friend.
"I'll go on the trip, Mr. Jefferson." Max said, raising her hand.
"Well, Max, seeing as you're the only one who's volunteered so far, it looks like you'll be going to San Francisco." Mr. Jefferson said, looking around the room, seeing no one else raising their hands.
"Unless, someone's changed their mind? Speak now or forever hold your peace." he added.
The room remained awkwardly silent, not one person moving to raise their hand, leaving Max Caulfield the only one with her hand in the air.
"Hmm, guess that settles it, then. Have fun in San Francisco, Max." Mr. Jefferson sighed.
Then, he went on a little rant about how the opportunities that you want aren't always going to fall into your lap, that you have to just take what's given to you and make the most of it.
"...so, think about that next time you pass on a photography gig because you think it's "lame"." Mr. Jefferson told the class at the end of his rant.
He excuses the class when the bell rings. Max finds Warren and tells him the good news.
"That's totally awesome, Max!" Warren said excitedly.
The two talk about their upcoming trip while walking towards the dorms. The club was going to leave for San Francisco on Friday then check into a hotel and tour the museum Saturday morning, stay another night and then head back to Arcadia Bay Sunday morning. That left everyone with some time to sightsee on Saturday afternoon.
"There's this cool research lab I think you'll get a real kick out of, I'll make sure to schedule us to take an afternoon tour of it." Max tells Warren.
"Oooh, sounds like fun. You know exactly how to speak to this nerdy boy's heart." Warren said as he and Max came upon the girls dormitory.
"Aww, look girls, it's Max and her little boyfriend." Victoria laughed in a mocking tone.
"I wonder what they're whispering about over there." Courtney chuckled.
"Probably planning their 'nerd wedding'." Taylor snickered.
"Yeah, they are going on that nerd-trip to San Francisco. Hope you have fun on your honeymoon, Mrs. Graham...you two losers deserve each other." Victoria replied.
Max rolls her eyes, not paying attention to anything the three of them were saying.
"See you tomorrow, Warren." Max said, giving his arm a gentle squeeze.
Warren waves bye as he continues on to the boys dormitory and Max steps around Victoria, Taylor, and Courtney to get into the girls'. Once she was inside, Max lets out a laugh and shakes her head. It was kinda funny that Victoria assumed that Max and Warren were dating while in reality Warren had a secret boyfriend and Max liked girls.
"Hey, Kate." Max greeted, waving.
"Hi, Max" Kate replied, waving back.
"And hello to you, too, Alice." Max giggled, smiling at the bunny in Kate's arms.
"Ehh, what's up, Max." Kate said in a high pitched Bugs Bunny voice, holding up Alice's front paw.
Both girls erupted into giggles and laughs.
"So, what are you doing, Kate?" Max asked as her laughter died down.
"Just taking Alice outside for some fresh air. I try to make sure she's not cooped up in my room too much." Kate answered, petting her bunny.
"Well, watch out, Victoria and her minions are sitting on the steps." Max warned Kate.
"Guess I'll go through the back, I don't have the energy to deal with Victoria." Kate huffed.
"Is she still giving you a hard time about that video?" Max asked, concerned.
"You're the only person who's not giving me a hard time about that d*mn video." Kate replied, frowning.
"I'm gonna go now." she said turning and walking down the hall to the back door.
Ever since that video of Kate kissing a bunch of people, seemingly drunk or high, was posted by Victoria on the internet, her life had been a living h*ll. She swore to Max that she never had more than a few sips of red wine or took any drugs, she said she doesn't even remember the majority of that night. And if being called a sl*t by your classmates wasn't bad enough, Kate's religious family also saw the video and her mom told her she was "d*mned to suffer eternally in the pits of h*ll". Even her own aunt called her "The Wh*re of Blackwell". Because of all this, Max was really worried about Kate, she hated seeing the girl with the heart of gold so miserable.
"If there is a God...I hope he's watching over you, Kate." Max mumbled, unlocking the door to her room.
She sets her bag by her closet and sits on the bed. The framed photo sitting on the nightstand catches her eye. It was an old photo of her and her childhood friend, Chloe.
"I've been back in Arcadia Bay for months now, why haven't I reconnected with Chloe yet?" Max asked herself.
Max and her parents had moved away when she was thirteen years old, right at the same time that Chloe's dad, William, died in a car crash. The now eighteen-year-old felt terrible for unintentionally abandoning her best friend when she needed her most. And she felt even more terrible that she didn't keep in touch with Chloe for the past five years. What was Chloe like now? How much has she changed? Would she even want to be Max's friend now?
"I won't know if I don't try. Come on Max, don't be such a wuss." Max muttered, taking out her cellphone.
She didn't know Chloe's current phone number but she easily found her on Facebook. There were lots of pictures on their of her with her new blue hair and pictures of her with that missing girl, Rachel Amber. Max opens up a chat and types out a message to send to Chloe.
Max: Hey, Chloe. I'm sorry it took me so long to reach out to you. You think you'd be up to catching up at the Two Whales Diner some time?
I'd understand if you'd never wanna see me again, but I thought I should at least try.
Max stared at her phone screen, waiting anxiously for a reply.
Chloe: Nice to know you haven't forgotten about me completely, I guess.
Looks like Chloe's still as snarky as ever. That makes Max smile a little....knowing her friend hasn't changed too much. She still has a chance to make up for lost time and maybe get back on good terms with Chloe.
A/N: I absolutely loved NotSoAverageFangirl's playthrough of "Life is Strange". And Pricefield is now my new favorite WLW ship.
