Songfic: Romeo & Cinderella

(This is the most symbolic shit I've ever written I'm sorry)

Just can't believe that I did not see

But ain't it funny how we grew up so close

Juliet knew Romeo ever since they were children. They would always play together, using every opportunity they could to be in the same room. She remembers sliding down the slide with her in his lap, laughing as he holds on to her. Now, as a teenager, she wishes he'd do that again. She dreams about him every night, holding her pillow tight as she wishes it was him. She has always wanted to say something about her feelings. But something holds her back, something she doesn't know anything about.

I'd know you better than all of the rest then

At school, she is considered one of the mutuals of everyone. She is not popular, yet not a loner. She is somewhere in between. And next to her is Maven as she brings him into her world. She makes sure to invite him everywhere she goes, keeping him close to her. Because she has a feeling deep inside of her that makes her feel that in another life, she accidentally let him go. But Maven enjoys being next to her, it makes him feel special. Even though she is just another student, to him, she feels like a celebrity.

Changing into people who may never meet again

But Maven finds her to be just like a friend, somebody who has helped him ever since he was a child. With his stepmother still in his life more than ever, Maven doesn't seem to enjoy her presence as much as he did before. Mare has always been the nicest person to him, but she's never crossed the line from nice to beautifully nice.

And so Maven started hanging out with over friends, along with Mare. Another one of those friends was you. Yes, you. The "library nerd" in the school. Mare was happy that he was making friends. But he almost started to hang out with you more than her. During lunch, Mare watches as he sits with you. She can't say if it made her mad. But she can admit that her soul got drenched with the green demon of envy.

They never see the real me, the Cinderella

Mare wanted to be you. She saw the way Maven looks at you. But Maven doesn't love you, does he? He loves her, right?

She holds her scissors tight in her hand, cutting her paper in the shape of a heart. Her friends who sit next to her in lunch look at her awkwardly, but don't question it. She is quiet that day, keeping the twin blades close to her. She just stares at you in gym, wondering how you got all of the love and attention and she didn't.

And once upon a true love that was long long ago

When Cinderella first met Prince Charming, it was in the hallways of the school. You always walked with your textbooks in your hands, as you have too many to fit in your backpack. You were walking past when a piece of paper fell from between the papers of your textbook. Quickly, before it could get stomped on, you went to pick it up. But there was already another hand on it. You look up, getting greeted by a soft pair of brown eyes. Those eyes suddenly moved, something in them changing. Cal smiles as he grabs the paper, giving it to you.

"Thank you," you say to him. He just continues smiling, his heart beating faster than it ever has before. Before you can turn away, he pulls out a light purple flower with two leaves and offers it to you. You smile, blushing a bit. You can't think. So you say the first thing that comes to mind before you become late for class.

"No thanks, but that's very romantic." And then Cal watched you run away, glancing at your glass slippers. How badly does he want to grab one and drag you towards him, keeping your slipper for himself.

Burning bright as a flame that we would soon let blow

And then Romeo fell in love with Cinderella. Maven looked at the white lemon blossom in your hair. It was a fun game that your friends played, finding flowers and putting them on your heads. But Maven found it beautiful. It made a part of him smile, an innocent part. He fidgeted his fingers with a small grin. In the middle of your laughter, you look at Maven. You place a hand on your head, touching what he was looking at.

"I forgot that was there. Should I take it off?" You ask.

"No," he answered quicker than he could think. It was an impulse, something inside of him speaking out to you. You let out a nervous laugh before turning back to your friends. Maven looks at your hand, having an urge to grab it. He's never felt this sort of innocence before. It's like you are drawing him in with your beautiful charm.

You look at Maven again, smiling at him. His heart skips a beat.

"You want your own flower, too?" You ask, grabbing his hand. You put a flower into his hand, one you stole from Cal in one of the classes you had together. The flower was truly beautiful, enchanting to look at. The perfect gift for Maven. Maven looks at the flower, blinking to make sure it was real.

"No, I don't think it would fit me." Maven says, saying it only to you. You blush, nodding your head. Romeo was considering what it's like to be a Romeo. He wants to be the savior of the story, but was he really destined for that role? He wants to be Prince Charming, to get the happy ending that was destined for him. If he decides to be the Romeo, doesn't that mean that his story'll end in a tragedy?

And broken Juliet, she cried

Mare watched you grab his hand, and it made her angry. Everything about the interaction drove her insane. She clenches her scissors tightly, the spring air clawing at the window above her. She clenches them tighter. Why does it have to be you? Why can't it be her? The wind blows harder, banging against the windows in the cafeteria. Same of the students start to notice, looking up in concern. What's so amazing about you? What's so fucking perfect about you? What did she do to deserve this possession? The windows all break in a row, the wind towering in like dominoes. The glass all rained down onto the students, rendering them all fearful. They all stood up, running around in fear. Everybody except Mare. She stood there, her body rapidly rocking in a way that just made her look like she was trembling.

It was you, no one else, it was me, no one else

And yet the story is at its end and curtains fall

Then, as the first bird flew in, Mare stood and rammed her twin blades into the table she stood against. The scissors were only centimeters away from her other hand. Once she let go of the scissors, she realized what just happened. She screamed, tripping on her seat as she falls backward. What has happened to her? Why is she so possessed with envy?

Mare looks around at her surroundings, something she hasn't done in awhile. She got completely terrified at the sight of all of the pink birds flying against the ceiling and stage of the cafeteria. She ran outside with the rest of the students. Cal, being one of the last one, saw his reflection in the pair of scissors. It wasn't until a purple bird landed next to them, turning its head to look at Cal with its one eye. Cal instinctively picked up the scissors and ran out after Mare.

And underneath all the smiles, lives a very vile

Before you could walk out of the hallway, Cal grabs your hand. You look back at him. And for a split second, you thought you saw a demon.

"Hey, I just want to let you know that you aren't the first person Maven has tricked in to being his friend. So watch out," he falsely warns before turning around to give Mare her pink scissors back. You put your hand on the door to the outside before something stops you.

Girl changing fate like poison daggers

A green bird is rested on the outside handle, something in its mouth. A key, a weird looking key. You take your hand off of the door, not deciding to confront the bird as you walk the other way.

You wonder if Cal was telling the truth. Tricked into being his friend? Maven is the most charming person, is he using that charm for bad?

"(Y/N)," Maven calls out your name as you walk down the hall. You turn around, looking at him. He's holding out the flower you once held on your head. You look at him, seeing the innocent smile on his face. You walk close to him, the flower Cal once held falling from your backpack as you grab Maven's. The flower immediately wilts as it touches the floor. Cal stops walking in front. He gets goosebumps against his skin. But then he looks at the scissors, grasping them tightly. You walk outside with Maven, holding his hand as you do.

I continue hating her to death

Oh god have I become the monster in this fairy tale?

Mare stands next to Cal, him holding out the scissors to her. Mare looks down, squinting at the pink object. Is it worth it to be jealous? Does she want to be the monster of this fairy tale? She thinks about Maven, thinking about how she feels about him. She sighs, grabbing Cal's hand. He drops the scissors, the object getting replaced with Mare intertwining their fingers.

"Forget about it," she smiles. Cal blushes, looking her in the eyes. There's a sparkle. Something in him changes like the day he saw you.

"Right," he responds.

I don't want you to leave so I just won't believe

That I'm the tragedy Juliet who dies of love

Juliet doesn't want to admit that she's the monster. She wanted her own happy ending. She doesn't want the happy ending of Juliet, but the happy ending of Cinderella. But she was destined for this ending, right? She holds onto Prince Charming's hand.

And you hold onto Maven's hand, happy with your own fairy tale ending.
