Chapter Forty-Five: Bucky {Captain America}

I was currently walking around a small base in Italy. The year was 1943, November time as the grass tells no lies. The war was still raging, and I wasn't far from the front lines - about five miles. The Tardis located another energy source while in the Time Vortex, so I thought better to check it out. As I walked through the camp, it was rather empty but in the distance I could see a mass amount of soldiers all standing in front of a small stage. But upon that stage, I see a oddly familiar face, hidden behind a blue and white spangled suit.

"How many of you are ready to help me sock old Adolf on the jaw?" Steve's voice boomed to the crowd as I walked towards the back, passing two tanks and stood next to a jeep which had some soldiers in. But they all reminded silent like still air, just staring at him. "Ok, uh... I need a volunteer," he spoke on, seeing if they would continued to cooperate.

"I already volunteered! How do you think I got here?" One of the Soldiers heckled from the crowd near the front, making the crowd of soldiers to laugh. "Bring back the girls!" He yells to Steve as they all began to cheer, as poor Steve looked nervous and out of place.

"I think they only know the one song. But um... let me... I'll- I'll see what I can do," Steve was trying to be reasonable with them.

"You do that, sweetheart," another heckler joined in, making me cross my arms over my chest, and knit my eyebrows together, as they were rude.

"Nice boots, Tinker Bell!" Another soldier shouts to Steve, which is very disrespectful and so rude. But all they did was laugh at him,

"Come on, guys. We're all on the same team here," Steve again tried to reason with the men, but they weren't going to listen to him.

"Hey, Captain! Sign this!" With moments the guy got up on a truck and pulled down his pants to show his bare arse to Steve, but he turns away. Just then the crowd began to throw things at Steve like tomatoes, but luckily he had a plastic shield to protect himself. The crowd began to cheer and clap once again as Steve emitted defeat and walked off the stage as the girls quickly came on. I scoff to myself as I unfolded my hands, and began to push pass every soldier that was in my way. But they seemed to part their ways like I was royalty and like they hadn't seen a women in a long time. I had a few lingering stares along the way, which made me hurry up faster as wolf-whistles were coming out, either for the girls on stage or they were for me. The stage began to become bigger as I got closer as the ladies began to dance around.

Once I made it to the stage, I came around the sides to the back which had the steps leading down. I see Steve stop at the bottom of the step, taking a deep breath as I imagine he's been doing this a bit and not really serving in the war.

"Hello Steve," my voice soared through the air, as Steve's head shot to the right to see me standing there. His eyes widen in surprise, happy to see me.

"Violet?!" He states, thrilled in his voice. He comes forward, and wraps me into a tight hug as I hugged him back. "God, it's good to see you," he states, his voice husky as within seconds he pulled back, staring into my eyes with those blue eyes of his.

"It's good to see you too. How long has it been?" I asked with curiosity, as I slipped the question into conversation, as time travel is a funny thing.

"About three months," Steve replies as he seemed a bit sad about me missing this long - for me it was longer than that. I offered a sad smile to Steve who's blue eyes stared deep into me.

"Time flies," I joked as I was trying to lighten up the mood. "You know you're meant for more than this?" I spoke with honesty, as my eyes locked with Steve's. "More than talking to soldiers who don't appreciate you. I see more than the Star Spangled Man, I see a hero," my voice was soft and steady as he took in every word I spoke.

"That means a lot," he began, blushing at my comment. "But I can't do anything about it," he replied as he wasn't in charge, he could just go off and do his own thing.

"But you can Steve, you're America's new hope and that gives me hope," I state with confidence that he would do this war proud, and win it for us all. His face softened as he was taking in my words once again. Just then, my sonic began to beep letting out a whirl of beeps, making me open my tweed jacket and pulled the sonic out slightly to see it flashing a pink colour, alerting me to new readings. "I'm sorry Steve, but I have to go," I state locking eyes back with him, and shoving the sonic back into my pocket. "See you around," I offered a warm smile to him, as he gave one back. I turn back around and headed back to the Tardis, as if I could locate this energy source, I could figure out what its being used for. But I could feel Steve's eyes on me, never leaving me...

.............................

The monitor in the Tardis was in front of me, images of Steve was on the screen. Multiple images of Steve in his spangled suit, and was named Captain America, the new hope for America. There were also videos of his shows across the states, the travelling he's being doing. It was like he was a show monkey and not a real soldier. He agreed to became a test subject to fight in the war, and then win it, but he couldn't even do that. Just then the screen displays a map - 30 miles from my current position in Italy. It was highly concentrated in the energy source that I've been tracking, so this must be the HYDRA base which is currently active. I could hop over to the place, and get a proper reading of the energy source, allowing me to figure out what it truly is. I inputted the coordinates for the HYDRA base, and came to the right, coming to the space-time throttle.

I pulled down the throttle, as the Tardis began to take off, the white circle of lights went around the console room. The Tardis makes a whooshing sounds, before I pulled the throttle back up, and the Tardis quakes to a stop, landing at the position which was inputted. I walked around the console, and to the doors, pulling open the left one and slipping out.

I was met with a dark room, the only light was coming from the large windows in the wall. In the distance was a metal operating table upon a small stage. It was like a operating theatre - lights hung from the ceiling, a equipment dotted around the room.  But there was someone currently on it the operating table. I could see their head, and they were hardly moving. I took each step with care, but as I came around the table, I could make out who it was.

"Bucky?!" I asked in amaze and worry, before I rush forward, and put my hand on his forehead as he looked kind of pale. His beard was of a stubble, and hair short. His eyes fluttered open, as he was adjusting to his surroundings.

"Vi-Violet?" He states weakly, his eyes meeting my own. But my gaze travelled down to see him strapped to the bed, like an patient.

"Hold on," I said calmly, as I opened my tweed jacket and pulled freed my sonic.

"Who are you?!" A German voice rang out from a above, making me look up to see a small popped out window, to observe the table. Within seconds, he came down the steps that let up to the small room, but he seemed frantic and rushing to get out of this place. His eyes drifted from us to the Tardis, as his eyes widen in shock.

"That's right, the British are here," I replied smugly to him, as his head cocked back over to me, but he quickly rushes passed us, and out of the room. But my concern wasn't on the short stumpy guy, my focus was on Bucky. "Hold still," I state to him, but he fell back under as I heard steady footsteps entering the room. I quickly went to the end of the table and ducked, as if it was soldiers, I had no idea how I would beat them.

"Sergeant, 32557," Bucky began to mumble to himself.

"Bucky?" A familiar husky voice came to ear making me peer up to see Steve - wearing a helmet and his Star Spangled Suit, with his trusty shield. He reaches Bucky's side and stares down at him. "Oh, my God,"  he states in pure shock, as I quickly stood to my feet.

"Captain," I announced as Steve shot his head around to see me standing there, but his eyes softened knowing I was here to help. "I found him like this," I state to Steve as he came to the bottom straps and with a quick pull, the strap snaps from it's hold and releases him as he did the one across Bucky's chest.

"Is-Is that," Bucky was lost for words as he was kind of out of it.

"It's me. It's Steve," Steve ensured Bucky that it was really him, as I came to stand next to him.

"Steve?" Bucky looked kind of puzzled as his eyes stared into his friend - who should be alot smaller than he is now.

"Come on," Steve pats Bucky's shoulder and halts him up from the table as he spoke his name once again, still wrapping his head around it. Once he was on his feet, he retained his balance as they locked eyes with one another. "I thought you were dead," Steve was clearly worried for his best friend, as it brought a smile on my face.

"I thought you were smaller," Bucky half-joked as he was still out of it. Before Steve could reply, an explosion rang out from within the factory we were in, meaning this place was being destroyed.

"This place is going up," I announce to them as we didn't have long left. I see Steve cock his head up to the small window box to see a map, and where the HYDRA Bases are currently stationed.

"Come on," Steve states, grabbing onto Bucky as his arm wrapped around Steve's neck. I quickly, stepped in and got his left side, and wrapped his arm around my neck, helping with the weight. We came off the little stage and headed towards the exit.

"What happened to you?" Bucky questioned his eyes on Steve.

"I joined the Army," he states as we left the room behind, and entered the corridor of the factory. Just then, I heard the Tardis take off as the whooshing sound entered the corridor. I groan to myself, as I left the HADs on and the explosions must be getting nearer and she detected it.

We continued down the corridor as Bucky got his balance back and could now walk on his own. Steve and Bucky spoke to each other as we walked down the corridor, but my mind wondered to the possibility of what the chance the energy source and the rescue of Bucky. Were they connected? I had no idea...

"Still with us?" Steve's manly voice pierced my eyes, making me snap back into reality.

"Yes I'm here," I replied to Steve as we walked through a door which led to one of many walkways inside a large factory which was currently on fire, and explosions still going off. We stopped at the railing to see an explosion go off below us, I felt Steve grab me and ducked us slightly from the explosion. It only lasted a few seconds, as we went back to the stairs and went up them to another walkway. Explosions rang out as we rushed down the catwalk, Steve in front leading us.

"Captain America!" A German accent came to ear, making us all halt at the walkway that led to the other side of the factory. We see the stumpy German dude who was in the operating theatre, but there was this lanky German dude with him. "How exciting!" He shouts over to us, as he handed a metal looking case to the scientist, but it looked more of a container to store something. "I'm a great fan of your films," he walks to the walkway, his eyes locked on Steve. "So Doctor Erskine managed it after all," he began as Steve and him walked closer to one another on the tension between them thickened. "Not exactly an improvement, but still impressive," they both came face to face near enough. Out of nowhere, Steve right hooks the German right in the face.

"You got no idea," Steve replied to him, but I see the lanky German's face all squashed together like he was wearing a mask and it's moved out of place.

"Haven't I?" He counters, recovered from the hit. He throws a punch but Steve was quick and raised his shield, as it leaves a fisted dent into the metal. Steve drew his gun, but the German hits him in the face, sending him off his feet and onto the catwalk. Steve grabs onto the bars of the catwalk and uses his strength to kick the German in his gut sending him flying across the catwalk. I see the Scientist pull a leaver and the catwalk began to retract to either side, and began to separate them. "No matter what lies Erskine told you, you see I was his greatest success!" He shouts over to us, but he grips his skin and began to peel it away. Bit by bit as he pulled away from the fake skin, red began to show and soon enough he ripped the mask off to reveal a red skull like face.

"You don't have one of those, do you?" Bucky asks in pure shock referring to the skinless face of the German.

"You are deluded, Captain. You pretend to be a simple soldier, but in reality you are just afraid to admit that we have left humanity behind," he began to walk off the catwalk and back to the elevator. "Unlike you, I embrace it proudly. Without fear!" he finishes off, holding now the container.

"Then how come you're running?" Steve shouts over to him, but he got into the elevator and the doors shut. Suddenly, an large explosion erupted in the factory as we needed a way out. I looked around hoping to find a way out, but my eyes saw a door on the other side, that we can reach from a beam.

"Up. We need to go up!" I rush out to Steve and Bucky as we could get out. We didn't waste any time and climbed the stairs further up into the walkways, coming to a halt at the railing of the beam that we could walk across. "When in Rome," I mumbled to myself but clearly they heard. I gently climbed over the railing and placed my foot on the beam as it rocked with the force of another quake from the explosion. I didn't look down as I carefully made my way across the beam, taking each step with care. But I mostly rushed over to the other side as I felt the beam dip a little, but I reached the railing on the other side, and let out a shaky breath. I came to the other side of the railing to see Steve help Bucky on.

I watch with anticipation just watching Bucky walk forward along the beam, as fires grew hotter, and explosions rang out. The beam dipped more as I jolt slightly in fear for Bucky's life but he was half-way through. Suddenly, a scraping of metal came to ear, making me look down to see the beam at this end begin to slip.

"Quickly Bucky," I rush out, my hand extended and waved to him, gesturing to hurry the hell up. As another explosion erupted I saw the fear in Bucky's face as he notices the beam slipped. He picks up the pace and rushes over and jumps in time as the beam falls into the fire. His hands latches onto the railing, as I grabbed his dirty shirt and pulled him onto the walkway. We both face Steve as he had no way to cross now.

"Gotta be a rope or something!" Bucky yells over to Steve, hoping for something nearby.

"Just go! Get you and Vi out of here!" Steve yells over to us, wanting us to get to safety.

"Not without you!" I yell back over to him, as I wasn't going to leave him here to die. Steve began to bend the railing to make a clear way for him to jump, which was impossible to do. But he began to back up a few meters and ready himself. He ran for the edge gaining his speed, and with the last step to the edge he uses his strength to push off the side and into the air...

Fire erupting from blow and consuming him...
