76. LARA: GOOD NEWS

"A very congratulations to you and your mate," the doctor said softly as she zipped her bag. "You need to follow my instructions of you might risk having another miscarriage. Lots of bed rest, Lara, and no shifting."

"Why?" I asked her with a frown. "Will it harm the baby?"

She frowned. "I'm not s sure. You're a bit different from my usual patients." She smiled to soften the blow of her words. "I've never treated a human who had been turned by bite. Silas told me that these unexpected shifts make you feel sick afterwards."

"So that happened because I'm pregnant?"

"Yes. Your body needs to adjust to all these sudden changes." She straightened with her bag clutched tightly in her hand. "I'll see if I can find some more information but in the mean time just take it easy."

"I will. Thank you."

With a nod, she turned and made her way towards the door.

"Hey doctor," I called before she could leave. "Don't tell Silas. I want to tell him myself."

With a small smile, she stepped out of the room but left the door slightly ajar. I could hear Silas asking her a bunch of questions but the doctor smoothly avoided all of them before she left. I leaned back against the headboard as I waited for Silas. It wasn't long before he entered the bedroom.

I took in his worried eyes as he walked over to the bed. Taking a seat on the edge of the bed, he placed his fists on either side of my hips and leaned down. His eyes darted over my face in question.

"So? What did she say?" he asked after a moment.

I smiled at him and without saying a word, reached for one of his hands. Straightening his fingers, I guided his hand towards my stomach and pressed it against it. He stared at his hand for a few seconds before his eyes snapped up to mine in question.

"Lara?" His voice cracked slightly. "What. . .?"

"I'm pregnant," I whispered. "I'm pregnant Silas."

"We're going to have a baby."

He smiled and then surprised me when he wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me against him. I hugged him just as tightly as I tried to fight the tears that were threatening to fall. Silas didn't try to hide his at all. I could feel them dampening my skin.

"Fuck, I can't believe it!" he yelled. "We're going to have a baby!"

"Congratulations."

The voice had both of us freezing. Silas's hold slowly loosened as he pulled away from me. I saw the flash of pain before he masked it like he usually did with his emotions. Silas glanced at his brother over his shoulder and smirked.

"Looks like your boy will grow up with his niece after all," he said to Ethan.

"Niece?" Ethan walked over to the other side of the bed and took a seat. "How do you know it's going to be a girl and not a boy?"

"I don't." Silas winked at me. "I'm just taking a wild guess here."

I rubbed a hand over my slightly rounded stomach. How had I not noticed before? How I could already be showing was completely beyond me. I couldn't be that far along but the doctor won't know unless I go into the hospital for her to do a more thorough examination. If we were lucky, we might get to see the baby with an ultrasound.

"It might not be my niece," Ethan muttered. "It could be my daughter or son."

I licked my lips and leaned back against the headboard. "I don't understand anything."

"What do you mean?" Silas frowned at me.

I tried to get my thoughts in order but they were all over the place. There were so many things I wanted to tell them, but I knew I never would tell them. Something's were better left unsaid.

"How? Just the other day we talked about trying for a baby and now I'm pregnant. Maybe Ethan's right, though. What if this baby was created by both of you? How many times had we had sex on the island after completing the mate bond?"

Silas pursed his lips and turned his head away. My eyes trailed over his tense form and then darted towards Ethan who was silently watching him. A lot of emotions were flashing through his eyes. It felt like forever before Silas broke the silence.

"I don't know what we're going to do if this baby—" He trailed off with a shake of his head. "It doesn't matter."

"How can it not matter?" I asked him softly. "We need to figure things out; visiting rights and all that."

"It doesn't work like that here, Lara. I suppose we should start teaching you the rules of the pack. We'll need to hold a Welcoming Ceremony for you—for both of you. Then there's the matter of your Mating Ceremony too."

"Let's take things one step at a time," Silas sighed. "One step at a time. We need to deal with Avery first."

"What's there to deal with? I'll—"

"Everyone saw the video Ethan. I know they're not going to just turn a blind eye to what I did."

Fear filled me. I reached over to grab Silas's hand. "W-what's the worst that could happen?"

Neither of them answered me right away. Silas glanced over at Ethan. They stared at each other silently for a few seconds before Ethan dropped onto his back and stared up at the ceiling. He sucked in a few deep breaths and slowly blew it out.

"As Alpha, it's my duty to inform the elders about the video. The elders will in return infrom the council and then the council would decide on what kind of punishment Silas would get." He paused. "They'll be the ones to decide and I'll have to deliver the punishment in front of the pack."

I swallowed. "In front of everyone?"

They nodded.

"How bad is the punishment going to be?" I questioned. "The truth please."

I heard Ethan swallow before he answered. "It could be anything from being whipped, banned or locked up for a certain amount of years."

"Banned?"

"I would be forced to leave the pack and never come back here."

"Can't we just—"

"It all depends on what my parents plan to do, sweetness," Silas interrupted. "Knowing them, they'd want to do the right thing."

Silas stood and nodded at me to move over. I slid to the middle of the bed and watched him as he kicked off his shoes before climbing onto the bed next to me. He wrapped an arm around my hips and pressed his face into the crook of my neck.

I stared up at the ceiling as I repeated the conversation we just had in my mind. I could lose him or we would be forced to leave. How would we be able to raise a shifter baby in the human world? The baby would never know his or her grandparents or even their other father if Ethan had indeed had a part in this baby being conceived.

"How was it possible for Avery to fall pregnant?" I asked. "You said that I needed both of you in order to ever get pregnant. I know Silas didn't sleep with Avery."

Silas chuckled. "Avery is a Lycan, sweetness, and you're—were—human. Things are more complicated with humans. Some Lycan's can easily fall pregnant while others find it harder to fall pregnant."

"Oh."

"Stop worrying, Lara." Ethan leaned up onto his elbow and over me. "Trust me. I won't let anything happen to Silas or to you."

"I know you won't," I whispered.

His eyes dropped to my lips, making my heartbeat increase. Was he going to kiss me? A part of me wanted him to kiss me just so I could have a taste of him, but the other part wanted him to stay away because those lips had been kissing Avery. I could still smell her on him and her scent revolted me.

Avery. Where had she gone? What was she plotting? Was she going to make sure that Silas got punished for what he had done?

Ethan cleared his throat and got off the bed. "I should get going," he muttered. "I'll let you know what happens with the elders."

With one last lingering glance at me, he turned and walked towards the door. Ethan was just about to open it when Silas spoke.

"Ethan?"

"Yeah?" He glanced at us over his shoulder.

"I don't think Luca is your child."

Ethan stared at the door silently. He was silent for a long time before he spoke.

"Neither do I."

His words had my mouth dropping open, but before I could question him, he had already walked out of the room. I reached up and ran my fingers through Silas's hair as I tried to make sense of what was just said. His body relaxed against mine and a small sigh fell from his lips.

"What did you mean by that?" I asked, no longer able to stay silent.

Silas hesitated. "I caught her fucking some other man in the woods when I went out for a run. I believe she's been cheating on him while he was with us. Saying that the baby is his is Avery's last chance at getting what she wanted. She wants the power than comes with the title and knowing her like I do, she won't stop until she gets what she wants."
