"—they're truly remarkable creatures. If I could be anything I think I'd want to be an angel."
"See I'd want to be a mermaid."
"You mean a merman?" she snorts.
I make a face. "A merman fine whatever, I think being able to breathe under water and having the ability to explore the deep sea and literally go where others can't would be absolutely amazing," I mutter.
She smiles and nods absentmindedly. "Yeah that would be pretty amazing, but I'd still rather be an angel," she chuckles.
My eyebrows furrow. "Okay why though?"
"Well one because they can fly—which you can already do so no wonder you'd rather be a mermaid. But also because they are some of the fiercest warriors I've ever seen. I've never met one in person but I've seen them hundreds of times in my parent's memories—"
"Wait your parent's memories?"
She nods. "Yeah have you ever read that book series the humans are obsessed with? About a boy called Harry something?"
"Of course I have," I snort.
She smiles. "Okay so you know how they store memories in the little glass vials, well witches that have had practice can do it too. That's where a lot of my history knowledge came from; my parents left me a lot of their memories and my favorites are the ones of the Great War.
"That was the last time the angels were seen in battle and my gods were they magnificent. Each time a warrior won a battle, they were gifted with a golden feather. They wore the golden feathers on their wings to scare enemies and earn respect from their allies," she explains, her eyes glittering.
"Now there was one angel, her name was Rowan Kaltain, that had entirely gilded wings. She was the only one to ever achieve such a feat, undefeated in battle and general of the angels' entire militant force. She was respected by every single one of her troops and feared by her enemies. Just the way she took her place in battle, at the front of the line, proudly displaying her golden wings, was enough to take your breath away," she murmurs.
She glances up at me and blushes profusely. "Sorry, I was rambling again."
I smile, shaking my head. "It's cute. You talk about everything with such passion, it's absolutely adorable," I say, running my thumb along her cheek.
She smiles widely, dimples forming by her lips as she tries to hide it. She turns back to her book and I stoop down to lightly kiss her forehead.
I sit with my back against a book shelf while Syrra lays on the floor, her head in my lap. She is reading a book in a language I can't understand but she explains it to me.
"So the next chapter is on vampires if you want to keep listening to me read," she says, looking up at me again.
"Or, we could go get something to eat?" I suggest and she leaps to her feet.
"FUCK yes! I'm starving and you guys have the best food!"
I laugh, shaking my head at her as I stand. "You're such a dork," I mutter, pulling her towards me so I can kiss her.
She grins against my lips then grabs my hand and tugs me towards the doorway. "Come on! I want food," she moans.
"Alright alright, let's go. The traders should have come by yesterday so there'll be a lot of foreign foods in the dining hall. We'll have to eat with the warriors and they can be kind of obnoxious but they're gonna have the best food," I tell her.
She shrugs. "I can deal with obnoxious people. The only thing that gets annoying is when they try to make a move on me."
"That's not gonna happen as long as I'm around," I growl, holding out my arm.
She smirks and presses herself up against my side so I can hold her. "A little possessive are we?" she asks.
"Protective, not possessive," I correct. "There's a difference."
"I can deal with protective," she chuckles.
I walk with her to the other side of the territory. Two massive buildings stand in front of a huge clearing; one is the warriors' quarters, the other is the dining hall.
I can hear the boisterous conversations and raucous laughter as we approach the dining hall. Syrra moves away slightly so I let go and watch as she throws the heavy doors open so that they hit the walls with an echoing bang. It immediately goes silent and all eyes turn toward her.
She saunters inside and I follow, staying back a few feet. Her dress flows around her and everyone watches as she makes her way to the tables serving food. We both get plates full of exotic foods and sit down at a mostly empty table at the edge of the room.
It's several minutes before the silence dissipates. I lean over to Syrra beside me with a small chuckle. "That was a hell of an entrance."
She smirks. "I wanted to see how you'd react."
"Honestly, I'm a little turned on," I admit and she raises an eyebrow.
"Really?" she asks.
I nod, leaning closer so that my lips are beside her ear. "Not many women walk with that kind of confidence and power, it's really sexy."
She chuckles a little, turning to look directly at me. "Well in that case, when I'm done eating, I'm going to show you something really sexy."
*********
"Holy fuck," I mutter under my breath.
She is no longer wearing a dress but gleaming black armor, covered in golden runes. She holds a sword that is unlike any I have ever seen. Three razor sharp edges, twisted and full of holes; nobody could survive a blade like that.
But what really gets me is the look on her face. She has eyes filled with mischief and a smile made for war. She is gorgeous and terrifying all at once.
"You ready Kaine?" she asks.
I swallow hard and take a deep breath. "I'm a little worried that you're gonna kill me with that," I say, looking pointedly at the sword.
She grins. "Fair enough," she chuckles. She sets it to the side and pulls out another sword from a sheath on her back. This one looks a lot like the one she gifted me. The same black blade and covered in runes just like her armor. Actually now that I look at it, both of us have matching armor and swords.
"Twinsies!" she laughs, spinning her sword around.
I shake my head with a small smile. I stand just a few feet from her in the center of a small dirt clearing. I adjust my grip on my sword and raise it slightly.
Syrra smirks and gets into a fighting stance. "Come on Kaine, Prince of the Fire Dragons, fiercest warrior under Queen Zari's command, impress me," Syrra purrs in a sultry voice.
Fuck, now I'm scared and horny, Lucifer grumbles.
The next thing I know, Syrra's blade is centimeters from my face. My sword is the only thing keeping her from cutting my nose off.
She grins. "You have to be faster than that if you expect to beat me," she sneers.
I twist my sword away but have to immediately bring it back up to block my neck. I shove her away again, this time hard enough to separate us. We circle each other and I can't help chuckling as she wiggles her eyebrows at me.
She attempts a slash at me but our swords clash together. The force shocks me slightly and I mutter a curse as my grip loosens slightly. Syrra kicks my wrist hard and my sword flies out of my hand.
I swear again, noticing my sword is several feet away. I look at Syrra but she has already put her sword back in its sheath and now she stands with her fists raised, her eyes gleaming with anticipation.
"Come on Kaine," she murmurs.
"I don't want to hurt you Syrra."
She smirks. "I'd like to see you try."
I'm gonna regret this. I leap forward but a sudden sharp pain in my gut and then a heavy weight on my back makes me fall onto my stomach. Syrra's knee presses into my neck and forces my face into the black dirt. "Okay so you kinda forgot to tell me that you're a fucking ninja!" I growl.
I heave myself up, knocking her off of my back. I turn around but as soon as I do, she kicks my knee and punches me hard in the face. My leg twists and I collapse onto my knees right as she pulls out her sword and holds it against my neck.
I am breathing heavily and blood runs from my broken nose but I can't help the smile on my lips as I stare at my mate.
She is out of breath too but the excitement written all across her face tells me it's from adrenaline rather than exertion. "I thought you were an all-powerful dragon-werewolf hybrid, next in line for the throne," she chuckles.
I raise an eyebrow at her. "Well if your goal in fighting me was to turn me on, you definitely succeeded," I chuckle. I start to stand but she edges the blade closer to my throat, forcing me back onto my knees.
"Don't get up just yet, I kinda like this view," she murmurs.
My eyes widen a little. "Okay, you need to let me up because I am not going to risk having a dragon see their future king on his knees like this," I say but she just smirks.
"I put up a cloaking spell when we came out here, nobody can see us right now."
My eyebrow shoots up. "Oh really?" I growl, my lips curling into a grin.
"Really."
"Well in that case, you should let me up so I can kiss you."
She leans closer to me so that her lips are by my ear. I can feel her hot breath fanning against my skin and I close my eyes with a small groan. I feel something sharp press against my throat and I growl impatiently. "Come on Syrra, put down the sword."
She chuckles before whispering into my ear, "Why don't you make me?"
