Chapter 41- Keefe
"I can't believe you guys," I muttered, scrubbing ferociously at my hair with soap. Discarded towels and empty shampoo and conditioner bottles lay scattered all around me, all used, all not working.
"WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING?" Fitz screeched from the corner of the room while Biana laughed her head off and took pictures. "YOU CAN JUST DYE YOUR HAIR BACK!"
"It wouldn't look natural then!" I argued back. "And besides, Dex says it wouldn't work!"
"WELL, AT LEAST YOU HAVE HAIR!" Fitz yelled. "MY HAIR IS LITERALLY GONE!" He pointed wildly at his bald head, which was shining under the light of Everglen's guest bedroom.
"I'm not sure mine counts as hair," Dex muttered, poking at his "hair" which more resembled a stinky, frozen pile of skunk poop. He turned and glared at Sophie, who was cackling with Biana and Marella in the corner.
A dramatic wail sounded out from the bathroom, where Tam was, mourning over the loss of his hair, which now looked like mine. Honestly, it was an upgrade, it beat his bangs any day. But that didn't mean I was happy with it, watching Tam have my perfect locks while I was stuck looking like a gulon was agony.
"Where's Linh?" Dex asked, as he was the only one out of the guys who wasn't having a meltdown.
Marella scrunched up her nose as the smell for Dex's hair drifted over to her side of the room. "She trying to stabilize Tam. Apparently he's having such a meltdown that he can't form words properly."
"Oh god," Biana said, massaging her forehead like Della always did whenever I came over to Everglen. "I better go check on him." She handed Sophie a camera and gestured around the room. "Feel free to take over my job of public humiliation."
I noticed that Sophie looked unsure about humiliating us, and was about to feel relieved when Marella walked over and plucked the camera out of Biana's hands and winked at her. "I got this Bi, go check on Tam. I won't let you down!"
As Biana sauntered away towards the bathroom (where dramatic, repeatedly more high pitched wails were sounding), Marella clicked the camera button mischievously and walked over to Dex, her nose plugged and camera ready.
"Oh god," Dex muttered, as Marella laughed. Dex turned around and rolled his eyes, a small smile on his face as Marella snapped embarrassing photos of him.
Sophie walked over to me and laughed at my appearance in the mirror. Neon green hair, with darker green accented stripes ran through my hair, which had also become sticky and slimy in the shampoo and soap process.
"I can see why you like pranking now," she said, settling in a chair next to me like she was planning to be there for a long time, grinning.
"Just you wait Foster, just you wait," I said to her while tilting my head from side to side to see which side was slightly better. "I'll get you back good."
"What are you gonna do?" she asked. "I could just read your mind and know everything that's going on in there."
I winked and gestured to my head. "Be my guest Foster. I'm sure you'd like to see what I'm thinking about."
Sophie's face turned her classic red. "I...that's not what I..."
"Hmmmm?" I asked turning around to face her, a smirk on my face.
Sophie fell silent and I chuckled before turning back to the mirror and re-examining my appearance. "What do you think Foster?" I asked Sophie, standing up and strutting back and forth in front of her. "I think I pull of green hair, what about you?"
Sophie stubbornly pursed her lips and shook her head.
"Oh come on, you know I look good," I said, leaning in. "You just can't say it because you're in love with the Fitzeroo."
I tried not to seem like I cared, but inside, it hurt. It really did. I leaned back out and sat back down in front of the chair, feeling glum inside when I remembered that, no matter what I did, Sophie was always gonna like my best friend more. Fitz didn't even like Sophie! Well, he might have used to, but definitely not now! He liked Linh. Well, I wasn't so sure that he liked just Linh anymore after seeing him and Jessalyn back in the shop. Well, it didn't matter who he liked, or that I liked her, Sophie would always be pining after Fitz, no matter what he does.
I didn't hear Sophie walk up behind me. She leaned on the chair and sighed, looking into the mirror at the both of us.
"Well, it might not be just Fitz that I like anymore," she said, before turning fire engine red and muttering something about how she needed to go and check on how Biana, Linh and Tam were faring at was about to disappear out the door before the door opened and Biana, Linh and Tam walked inside, Tam looking miserably at the floor, Biana and Linh looking around awkwardly, trying to ignore Tam's current state.
"So..." Biana said, wringing her hands together awkwardly. "Tam's out of the bathroom."
"Yay..." Linh said doing a halfheartedly raise of her arms in a weak cheer.
Everyone's eyes were flicking to Tam's hair, and then at my hair, where Tam's current hair was supposed to be, but now it wasn't.
"ummm, he still won't talk," Biana said.
"But he's out of the bathroom!" Linh cut in, trying to remain positive.
"Yeah, that's a good thing," Dex remarked, getting what Linh was trying to do.
Marella's lips tightened, and her eyes went wide, and I could see her teeth biting her lip so she wouldn't laugh. Then, she glanced back at the pair of us and she couldn't hold it in any longer.
"BWAHAHHAHAHAHAAA, OH MY GOD, Oh MY god, OH OH OH MY GOD," she said, clutching her stomach. Biana and Linh shot her looks as she collapsed on the floor, gesturing wildly with her finger. "YOU- HE- HIS HAIR- OH MY-"
"Not helping," Biana muttered to her out of the side of her mouth. Marella stopped, but it seemed like she was holding back laughter as she retreated back to the corner where Dex was, who also seemed like he was having trouble not laughing. Personally, I didn't see WHERE the funny part was. A Hair massacre is an extremely serious offense.
Della and Alden walked in, Alden carrying a lot of bags, Della with a clipboard and a pen. I peaked over to see what was on the board. It looked like a neat schedule, with Della's fancy handwriting all over it.
We waited for her to notice our hair.
She didn't notice....
Not yet....
Maybe she wouldn't see it...
"WHAT HAPPENED?" Della's yelled, her voice resonating across the room.
She noticed.
"Biana happened," Fitz grumbled as Della rushed over to him and touched his bald head. Alden dropped the bags he was carrying in shock, and dresses, suits, shoes and jewelry tumbled out of them. Biana dove dramatically onto the floor and saved her dresses from hitting the ground, and becoming "dirty" even though Everglen's floors were so clean, you could see yourself in them.
"Don't blame it all on me! It was Linh's idea in the first place! " Biana said, as she began hanging all the girls dresses into the closet. I leaned over on my chair. What was Sophie's dress like? I caught a glimpse of red, and quickly made a note of it to steal Fitz's red tie.
Biana caught me peeking. "Keefe no!" she said pushing me away, being careful not to touch my head. "You aren't allowed to see a girls Winnowing dress before her gala! It brings bad luck!"
"I thought that was just for weddings?" Linh asked, ignoring Tam shooting her a look from across the room. He was probably just shocked that Linh was the one who had the idea to mess up his "perfect" bangs.
Biana paused for a moment, before saying, "Well, I think it should be that way for Winnowing Galas too."
Biana began to lecture the girls about accessories and makeup and I saw Sophie shooting me a 'Help Me' glance. I strode over to her, grabbed her elbow, and sneakily lead her away from the group as Biana began to show off the difference between a winged and a double winged eyeliner, or whatever she was talking about.
We walked over to where the rest of the boys were. They were with Della and Alden, discussing how to fix their hair. I eagerly pulled my chair over to the conversation. Sophie looked hesitant to come with us, but then she glanced back at Biana's lecture near the closet, (she had now seemed to move on to talking about different hair ties) she immediately followed me to the group.
"This has to be solved quickly!" Della said worriedly, glancing down at Fitz's hair, (or rather, lack of hair). "I already settled all the bookings and invited the guests, and planned all the decorations, and caterers, and music and scheduled the dates of the Galas for everyone! And now I'm going to have to cancel everything and send more letters to all 400 guests again!"
Alden patted Della on the back soothingly as Dex repeated what he had said to us on the carriage back to Everglen from Atlantis. "We just have to wait for it to wear out. These are prank elixirs, I made them myself with Lex, Bex and Rex. I would know."
We all slumped down miserably at the news, but then Dex snapped his fingers together, waving away the scent of his hair away from his mouth before he spoke. "We always list how long it will take for the elixirs to fade away on the back of the potions! The girls will know!"
"Ask Sophie," Tam said from the corner of the room so nobody could see his hair, (or rather, my hair). "She's a girl."
"Well spotted Bangs Boy," I remarked in his general direction, (you couldn't really see where Tam was, it was too dark in the corner). "Or should I say, No Bangs Boy?"
"Well Sophie?" Tam asked, completely ignoring me. "You have a photographic memory, don't you?"
"Umm, yeah?" Sophie said,
"Than what was the date?" Tam asked impatiently.
Sophie stared at the ground uncomfortably. "I don't know," she whispered. "Biana and Marella took off the tags before I saw them. You should ask them."
I could feel Tam wanting to explode at Marella, (he was never mad at Biana, so I wasn't surprised.) I could also feel Dex wanting to explode at Biana, (also made sense, seeing as he had a crush on Marella). Me on the other hand, (and Fitz I was pretty sure) would have no trouble exploding at both of them.
We all stood up at the same time.
"MARELLA!" Tam shrieked.
"BIANA!" Dex yelled.
"BOTH OF YOU ARE SO DEAD!" screeched Fitz.
They all glanced at me to see what I would say.
"Ummmm," I stared Marella and Biana down with fierce eyes. "ALL OF THAT AND MORE!" I screamed. I saw Fitz shoot me a look that plainly was like 'THAT'S what you settled for!?'
"What?" Biana asked as Marella shot us a look that made me want to run away and hide in my room forever and ever and never come out.
"Do you know when this thing will wear off?" I asked them cautiously, pointing to my hair.
"Why do you wanna know?" Biana asked, crossing her arms over her chest.
I had to be gentle with this. Just barely probe her a little to get her to reveal.
"I dunno. I just wanna know," I said, leaning back on a column in what I hoped was an elegant, casual stance.
Marella raised an eyebrow at me. "Yeah, no."
Dex groaned at me before stepping up to Biana. I shot him a look, but he didn't even look at me. This wasn't how we were supposed to get it out of them! He didn't understand that with girls, you had to gently, sneakily prod them until they accidentally revealed information!
"We need it, because if our hair doesn't get fixed, Della's gonna cancel our Winnowing Galas."
Tam caught the drift and stepped up too. "Yeah. ALL of our Galas."
Marella opened her mouth, but Biana beat her to it.
"I HAVE A POTION THAT REVERSES IT! Please just take it, don't let her cancel it!" She reached inside the closet and pulled out a elixir that was gray with a strange smoky look to it.
"Bi! You shouldn't have given them up that easily!" Marella said, crossing her arms.
Dex quickly snatched all four potions and tucked them under his arm before he and Tam sauntered towards me and Fitz. Tam grabbed an elixir first and chugged it in one breath. In a flash, his bangs were back, and so was his salt.
The first thing he did was walk up to me and smirk, (WHICH WAS MY THING NOT HIS) "And Sencen strikes out again! I guess I should have known. He always strikes out on everything, especially girls." Then he flicked his bangs and walked away.
I was about to go after him, but then Fitz handed me a potion and looked at me as I drunk it and my hair turned back to the Hair.
"Don't try to out-salt Tam," Fitz said, "Believe me, it never works."
I rolled my eyes as Fitz chuckled at me in amusement. I slumped down in a chair and let out an angry puff of air.
"Oh come on, don't be like that, we have Winnowing Galas to prepare for!" Fitz nudged me and I got up.
"What do we have first?" I asked.
"Tablecloth selecting!" he said, in a fake excited voice.
"Yayyyyy," I monotoned, before following him out of the room.
We entered a room filled with different fabrics that all looked the same, and we saw Tam and Dex already there.
Tam stared at me with dead eyes. "Kill me now."
"My pleasure."
We had a LONG day ahead of us.
I FINALLY UPDATED WITH A LONG CHAPTER ITS A MIRACLEEEEEEE!!!! Hope you enjoyed it!
