Chapter 40- Fitz
Jessalyn led us down the hallway into a room full of suits. Although most of them were dark shades, I noticed a few that were extremely bright and loud, that hurt my eyes. Of course, these were the ones that Keefe immediately rushed to.
"Look Fitzypoo! I can imagine you dancing the night away in this one," Keefe said, holding up a disgustingly bright neon yellow tux.
"No way!" I said, pushing it away.
"Look!" Dex said, who had been rummaging a cabinet behind us. "I found the matching bow tie!" He held up a bow tie in a similar neon shade and Tam scoffed, with amusement or disgust, I couldn't tell.
"Aha! It's perfect!" Keefe exclaimed and seized the bow tie from Dex and shoved the entire horrid ensemble at me. "Alden! We already have Fitz's outfit picked out!"
My dad, who looked relieved to have been saved from talking to the crazy blond store worker from before walked over and examined the outfit in my hands. He looked at me with a weirded out face.
"This has to be a joke."
"Don't worry, it IS," I said to Keefe and Dex, who were trying to restrain their laughter, and pulled the suit out of my Dad's hands and hung it back on the rack where Keefe found it from.
"Oh come on!" Dex said to me as I hung it back. "You would have looked good in that Wonderboy!" Keefe and Dex erupted once again and this time I swore I heard Tam chuckle softly in amusement from him bench in the corner.
I scowled at the pair of them and pulled them both over to the side of the room that did NOT contain electric, eye-melting colored tuxes.
"Wait up," Jessalyn said, running over, her ponytail bouncing against her back. She had appeared with a tape measure and her clipboard. I immediately resumed what I thought was a "cool" position and leaned on the nearest rack of clothes next to me.
The rack fell over with a bang and a bunch of shoes tumbled out from beneath it. Embarrassed, and sure that my cheeks were bright red, I hurried and picked up all the shoes. I checked behind me to see if I was the only one who made a fool of myself.
I was not, and I had turned around just in time to see Dex quickly attempting to make a cool position. It ended up with his head cocked, hip jutted to the right and both hands planted firmly on his hips. He noticed I saw him and quickly resumed a normal stance, his freckles standing out on his flaming face.
I "subtly" turned my head to see if Jessalyn noticed. She did not, and I didn't know whether I was happy or unhappy about this situation. She was sitting with Tam, and obviously flirting with him, her elbow on his knee as she measured the length of his leg for suit measurements.
I watched Tam carefully. I swear, if he cheated on my sister with Jessalyn...
Tam seemed...not extremely into it but at the same time, it didn't seem like he minded Jessalyn being so close. Jessalyn finished measuring him, and tucked away her measuring tape into her cloak pocket and remained talking to him on the bench they were sitting on.
Jessalyn's Dad saw her and I watched as he strode over to her excitedly. "Quickly, quickly now Jessy! We have a Vacker," then he squealed, "and a Sencen," pause for squealing again, "in our shop! Quick, leave that boy there and quickly go measure them! Quickly now!"
Jessalyn gave a sigh and glanced at Tam once more before picking herself up, and walking over to me. I quickly tried to stare extremely intensely at the floor in front of me, so Jessalyn wouldn't think I had been creepily watching her from across the room.
"I know you were watching me," she said, before I could open my mouth. "I'm not blind."
"Oh I-"
"You don't have to explain yourself. I know it was because of my dad, wasn't it? He always does that sorta stuff, you should have seen his face when I got you as my 14th option on my Matchmaking List. He wants me to get with you soo bad, it's not even funny. But I promise that I'm not a weirdo like he is."
I was in shock, but wasn't about to correct her about the reason I was looking at her. "Oh...yeah. Yeah. That was why. Mhmmm. Yeah, I can tell you aren't weird. At all. Yup. So ummm, could you measure me now?"
Jessalyn gave a little laugh that sounded a lot like tinkling wind chimes. "Sure. Stand up so I can get your back. Jeez, why are you so tall?" She asked as she struggled reaching the top of my head with a measuring tape.
She stood precariously on her tippy-toes, swaying back and forth, unbalanced.
"Can," *grunt* "Somebody" *grunt* "Please," *grunt* "Get," *super loud strange sound that I don't even know how to begin to describe it* "me, a STINKING BOX-AGHHHH."
As Jessalyn toppled over backwards I quickly swerved around and grabbed her arm, and pulled her back up before she hit the ground. She ended up wayy to close to my face.
I could have sworn her cheeks went slightly pink before turning away and standing on top of the box that had mysteriously appeared sometime during this. She went back to measuring like nothing happened, but her cheeks were still pink.
When she was done, she walked quickly over to Keefe and didn't say a word to me. I watched her go in silence and didn't hear as Dex walked up to me.
"Dude, what about Linh?" he asked me quietly. "You realize Tam's gonna freak out when he realizes that Linh's not the only crush you have anymore."
"Yeah I realize this," I muttered back to him. "I just can't help it!" I thought for a moment and then slammed my hand down on my palm. "I finally figured it out Dex!" I whisper-shouted to him. "She MUST be a Beguiler. There's no way my will is so weak the I would just fall for a random middle-class girl who works in a suit shop!"
Dex shook his head. "Wonderboy, she ain't no Beguiler. She's a Technopath. I can tell. I know how a Technopath acts and feels like. And dude, you can't just talk about middle-class people like that. I'm middle class, REMEMBER? And so's Marella, Tam AND Linh."
"Linh is technically Nobility!" I argued back. "I mean, just cause she ran away from her parents, she is Nobility cause her parents were! So, that means she IS of a high class, and she's not a middle-class person."
Dex looked at me, disgusted. "I can't believe you are arguing to me about this! If you really liked Linh, you wouldn't care whether she was Noble or not!"
I went silent for a while and Dex stared at me. "Don't tell me that this is because you're "The Golden Boy" or a Vacker that you won't get together with somebody who's middle class or not Noble. Are you kidding me?"
"Dex, there are family values and stuff. You know-"
"What the heck dude?! That's so stupid you realize that right?"
"Dex, I know it is. I'm sorry." I said. "But that's just how I was raised, and Biana can go do whatever she wants cause she's a girl and she's not the oldest. I'm the oldest now that Alvar's gone and-"
Dex sighed. "No wonder you never tried to reach out to Linh," he muttered, but I could still hear him. "You're a coward."
Then, he turned away and left to wherever Tam was sitting in his shady dark corner of the room.
Jessalyn had finished measuring Keefe and was about to turn around to go to Dex when she saw me standing alone. She sighed and walked over to me. I tried to ignore her Dad gesturing excitedly from the doorway.
"I'm not here because of my Dad," was the first thing she said to me, plopping onto the ground. "What's wrong?"
"How do you know somethings wrong?" I asked, sitting down on the floor next to her.
She scoffed. "You don't need to be an Empath to tell somethings wrong with you. Your face is spilling out emotions from all over the place."
"Dex just called me a coward," I said.
"Why?" Jessalyn asked, tilting her head to the side in a cute way. She actually seemed genuinely concerned. "You don't seem like one."
"It's because I like a girl who's not really Nobility and I am, and Dex was getting all in my face because I was scared to really get together with her because I'm the, you know, Vacker boy."
"Oh." was all she said. There was a silence before she said, "I kinda get what you mean. Like, family pressure and then you have feelings that are different from what your family wants. I understand that." Another pause. "That's kinda what happened to me."
"What happened?" I asked.
"I don't think you would want to know. Whatever you think about me might turn bad because of it."
"That won't happen don't worry."
She sighed and stared out of the window. "It's part of the reason my Mom left me, because I was different. Fitz, listen, I'm-I'm-"
"You're what?"
"I'm.....not straight."
"What?!" I said. Then I realized I was a little too loud and I lowered my voice. "So...you like, ummm, you like girls?"
"Not completely," she replied. "I like guys too, and more I guess then girls, but I also, sorta like girls. I guess I'm what the people in the Forbidden Cities call.... bisexual?"
It was quiet for a while before she spoke again. "My Mom found out when I was around 13. It was with a girl in a level above me. Her name was Amira. I don't know what happened to her after that, I never saw her again. My Mom saw me with her and she was disgusted and left our family. I don't know where she is either. My Dad doesn't know though, I never told him."
"Oh." This time I was the one who said it. "Well, what did you put on your form then?"
"I put that I liked males," she said. "I don't want to be seen as a weirdo. Anyways, I guess I have to go measure Dex now. Good luck with your girl."
Jessalyn pushed herself off the ground and strode toward Dex and Tam. I watched her go and sat in silence on the floor, wondering how somebody could stand hiding themselves like that for so many years.
Hope you enjoyed this chapter! It's a longer one, and I'm sorry for not being very active! What do you guys think of Jessalyn now huh?
