Chapter 1
[Diary entry #1: February 2, 2020]
I'm probably the unluckiest man on Earth. I don't know what I did to deserve such a treatment. Maybe it's because my looks don't follow exactly those goddamn standards! (Oh, yeah, looks are everything when you live in such a closeted country as South Korea.)
Every time I'm dragged to a party or a double date, I feel awkward. It's like a test, and I always flunk. I don't know what to say, but one thing is certain: whoever invites me makes sure to never make that mistake again after I mess up.
Needless to say, last night was no exception. Kim Yuncheon invited me to join him for a double date, out of the blue. This was surprising since he never seemed particularly friendly to me. And neither was his girlfriend, Park Darin. So why would they become interested in me?
We met at a noraebang café downtown, where I was supposed to meet my "date", a girl named Park Soonyoung. She seemed an interesting type, someone I'd talk to rather confidently if I weren't so awkward. Also, she turned out to be the one who had the idea of karaoke night.
As soon as we started getting the gist of the event, we all had fun and made sure that we enjoyed ourselves. That is, until Yuncheon and Darin ditched the rest of us to hook up somewhere else. Saying that I felt awkward is an understatement. I didn't know what to tell Soonyoung or how to keep proper conversation going without making a fool out of myself.
That was why she was mostly taking the lead. Not only in conversation, but also in picking songs and, guess what? Dancing. She seemed to be a natural, or, at least, have had years of training behind her incredible talent. I, on the other hand, am hopeless on the dance floor, to the point that she couldn't help stifling a laugh whenever I tried to make a move in a rather clumsy way.
By the way, even though Soonyoung was somehow amused by me (mostly my clumsiness, my bad puns and my not so on point singing skills), I knew things wouldn't end well for me.
Yeah. There was someone else who claimed to be in love with her, namely Kim Minsong. I know him and, honestly, I stand no chances against him. He was a music student, which means that he probably knew about music more than half of the other customers in the club put together. Plus, he was incredibly confident and he could dance, unlike me.
As soon as Soonyoung set her eyes on him, she recognized him and accepted his invitation to dance with him. After that, I realize that it was my cue to leave, swearing that I wouldn't have a noraebang night again.
Long short story, I made a fool out of myself there and I believe I'm going to hide in a deep hole for a while.
