FOURTEEN: TIME OF MY LIFE
this is a double update! read thirteen first!!!
Billie didn't remember falling asleep in Jamie Tartt's bed, she didn't remember if she'd set an alarm for the next morning either.
As she rolled over in Jamie's large king sized bed, his arm wrapped around her waist she glanced at the alarm clock on his bedside table to see that it was 10:07AM, and kick off was at midday, which meant that she had less than two hours to get ready and make it to Liverpool in time.
"Jamie," She turned back to face him, nudging him with her elbow, "Jamie, it's past ten."
"Hmm," He hummed, pulling her closer to his chest.
"Jamie," She tapped his arm, "I've got to get up."
"I'm comfy," Jamie mumbled, pressing a kiss against her shoulder as he slowly opened his eyes.
"Jamie, I'm meant to be in Liverpool and the match kicks off in less than two hours, I really need you to let me get up," She muttered, gently kissing his cheek as he wordlessly let her slip through his grasp, "Thank you."
She climbed out of the bed, wearing a t-shirt and gym shorts that Jamie had given her the night before, grabbing her clothes from her bag and slipping into his en suite, swiftly closing the door behind her.
After a brisk shower she dressed herself in her jeans from the day before with a new cropped t-shirt before pulling on the black Adidas hoodie that Jamie had leant her, knowing that it would probably be cold on the sideline in Liverpool.
Once she'd dressed she hurried back into the bedroom where Jamie was propped up in bed reading something on his phone, "You called Brad a community penis?"
"What?" Billie stuttered as she pulled her wash bag from her tote bag.
"It's in The Sun," Jamie replied, showing her his phone screen.
"Well, I did tell them they could print it," She sighed, "Didn't think they would."
"I like it," Jamie smiled as Billie hurried back into the en suite, keeping the door open.
"What else does the article say?" She called out as she rummaged through her makeup bag for hair gel and hair bands, deciding that she'd just wash her hair that night after the match.
"Just Lasso peddling some more of that yeehaw bullshit," Jamie sighed as he climbed out of the bed, wearing just a pair of shorts.
"Ted didn't know," Billie assured him as she kept her eyes on her reflection while trying to tame her hair into some sort of bun.
She could remember the look on Ted's face when She and Beard had told him about Jamie's departure. He was even more devastated by the news than Billie, he felt as though he'd finally got through to him, and he was finally about to utilise his potential as a key member of the team.
"Bils, there's no way he didn't know," Jamie huffed as he watched her finishing whatever it was she was doing to her hair.
"You didn't see him when I told him," Billie replied as she swiftly cleansed and moisturised her face, "He was completely discombobulated by the news."
"Discom-what?"
"I'm telling you, he didn't know," Billie smiled as she looked at him through the mirror.
"If you say so," Jamie muttered, and Billie could tell that he was conflicted by it all, because in his eyes, Ted had abandoned him, and in doing so he'd wound up in the place where his father could easily reach him.
"You okay?" Billie asked as she quickly painted her lips with lip oil.
"Yeah," Jamie nodded as he approached her, hugging her from behind as she struggled to fit all of her stuff back into her makeup bag, "Can't you just pull a sickie?"
"What do you think Pep would do if you pulled a sickie?" Billie smiled, looking at him through the mirror.
"Well, I probably wouldn't be playing in the next match," Jamie mumbled as he rested his head in the crook of her neck.
"So multiply Pep's wrath by ten and then imagine my brother's face if he found out that I'd spent the night here," Billie sighed, resting her hands on his arms.
"Yeah, you make a good point," Jamie smiled, gently kissing her neck before letting her go, "I can drive you back to Liverpool, if that helps?"
"Haven't you got training?" Billie asked, knowing that he had a match the following day.
"In the afternoon, I could be back in time," He assured her.
"I've got an open return booked," Billie told him, "And the traffic in Liverpool will be awful on a match day."
"Will you let me drop you off at the station?" Jamie sighed.
"Alright."
Jamie dropped Billie off at Manchester Piccadilly station just as he said he would, they said a quick goodbye and she raced to her platform via the nearest coffee shop to grab herself something for breakfast. She sent Roy a quick text, explaining that her original train had been cancelled and she'd meet the team at the stadium instead.
Once the train pulled into Liverpool she realised that getting to Goodison Park would be easier said than done as the city was already a sea of blue football shirts, with the occasional few Richmond fans who had made the journey up from London.
After realising that she'd have no joy finding herself a taxi to the stadium she managed to squeeze into a car with three Richmond fans, who were more than happy to help Roy Kent's sister get to the stadium on time.
So there she was, speeding through the back corridors of Goodison Park Stadium, making her way to the away team locker room. She quickly rushed around a corner to see Nate and Ted in the midst of some sort of conversation, that she couldn't read the energy of.
"Billie?" Ted looked up from Nate, "It's good to see you."
"So sorry I'm late, trains were acting up, I got here as quick as I could," She told him as she caught her breath.
"Don't sweat it," Ted smiled, "I was just telling Nate here that he should do the pregame talk."
"I don't think it's a good idea," Nate told her.
"I do," Billie smiled, even though she had no idea what the talk would consist of, "It'll be fun."
"She's right," Ted nodded, opening the locker room door, and holding it open for Billie as Nate trailed behind.
"Oh my God," He muttered to himself in fear.
"Hello stranger!" Colin grinned as he saw Billie walking into the room, "Where've you been, you dirty stop out?" It was a grunt and death stare from Roy that scared the Welshman into correcting himself, "It's none of our business."
"Alright, listen up, fellas," Ted gained the attention of the room, "as of late, I feel like y'all have heard enough of my jibber-jabber, so I asked Nate the Great to jot down a few of his thoughts and ideas about you guys and today's game, so let's focus up, all yours, Nate."
Nate took a deep breath, standing at the front of the locker room as Billie took a seat on Colin's right. The boys made sure to reassure and hype him up, not quite aware of what sort of ride they were in for.
"Okay, Isaac," Nate mumbled.
"Oh, yeah, you got this, bruv, alright?" Isaac grinned.
"I've noticed of late," Nate paused looking at Ted who simply nodded, "That you've been playing like a big dumb pussy."
"Wow," Colin whispered as the room remained silent.
"What the fuck did you say to me, bruv?"
"You're more concerned about looking tough than actually being tough," Nate told him, "There's a way to be intimidating without being physical, I hope you don't mind me saying...Sam."
"Oh no."
"You're constantly getting beat on the wings," Nate told him, "it's cause you're indecisive, you second guess more than a shitty psychic, the only African I know more imprisoned by his own thoughts is goddamn Nelson Mandela."
"Did you hear that?" Colin laughed, looking at Billie.
"You think that's funny do you, Colin?" Nate asked, "You and all your fancy step over bullshit, let me ask you this, do you wax your pubes?"
"What?" Colin remarked.
"Did I stutter, dickhead?" Nate remarked and Billie had to cover her mouth to stifle the laughter, "Do you wax your pubes? Yes or no?"
"No."
"Then why are you always trying to play like a Brazilian?" Nate quipped and the boys were immediately impressed.
"What just happened?" Colin muttered.
"I don't know, but I like it," Billie grinned.
"Rojas."
"Woo! Roast me, amigo," Dani replied with a smile.
"Alright, you say that football is life, right?" Nate remarked.
"Football is life." Dani nodded.
"Yeah, well then your defence is death," Nate replied, "The only person I've seen lose their man more often is Carrie fucking Bradshaw."
"Sex and the City," Colin muttered.
"I know." Billie smiled.
"Right, Roy," Nate turned to the captain who stood up to meet him in the middle of the room as the room fell quiet.
"Go on, say what you're gonna say," Roy told him as he stood right in front of him.
"Okay," Nate whispered, but before he could look down at his paper Roy had torn it from his hand and tossed it onto the floor.
"Don't read it," Roy remarked, "Say it to my face."
"The great Roy Kent," Nate muttered before slowly gaining some confidence, "You're old now, and slow, and your focus drifts, but your speed and your smarts were never what made you who you are, it's your anger, that's your superpower."
"That's what made you one of the best midfielders in the history of this league," Nate continued, "But I haven't seen it on the pitch this season, Roy, I mean you used to run like you were angry at the grass, you'd kick the ball like you'd caught it fucking your wife, for Christ's sake."
"That's true." Billie whispered to Colin.
"But that anger doesn't come out anymore when you play, but it's still in there, and I'm afraid of what it's gonna do to you if you just keep it all for yourself," Nate muttered as the room remained silent.
Without a word Roy turned and walked back to his space on the bench, leading everyone to assume that he would just sit down. But he didn't, with a heavy groan he pulled on the bench until he tore his section from the wall, startling the rest of the team before turning to face them as they cowered on the other side of the room.
"Lets go get these fuckers."
And get those fuckers they did.
"And the impossible has happened, Richmond have won at Everton one-nil, thanks to a rare goal from Roy Kent. Kent was absolutely brilliant today, he was like a man possessed."
"We know we are, we're sure we are, we're Richmond till we die!" The team and Billie cheered as they piled back into the locker room, joined by Rebecca, Keeley and Sassy who were all poised to question Billie on her secret rendezvous in Manchester the night before.
"I'm so bloody proud of you," Billie grinned, wrapping her arms around her brother as the team surrounded them, still singing the Richmond chant.
"It was just a goal," Roy sighed.
"It's never just a goal, you're my big brother, that could've been the winning goal in a World Cup final for all I care," She beamed, "You ended the loss streak!"
"Suppose we did," He smiled, pulling her into his side and kissing the top of her head.
Billie watched as her brother's gaze drifted over to Keeley who was on the other side of the room, "Go, go and talk to her."
"What are you talking about?" Roy huffed.
"Keeley," Billie whispered, "Just fucking talk to her before I do it for you."
"Fine!" Roy huffed, even though he appreciated his sister's encouragement.
Billie found herself pulled back into the crowd by Colin, who was as sweaty as anything as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders. She looked over to the other side of the room to see Rebecca, weaving through the crowd to get to her.
"How was Manchester?" Rebecca beamed as she greeted the girl with a hug.
"It was good to see everyone again," Billie smiled, "Felt like home."
"I'm glad to hear it," Rebecca nodded, she could tell from the glimmer in Billie's eyes that it was more than that, but neither she nor anyone in that room knew that it was the doing of Jamie Tartt.
"Oi, Listen up!" Her brother shouted as he stood on one of the benches, silencing the room, "None of you are going back to the hotel tonight, 'cause we did something today that no one thought we could do, including us! So we're going out, we're celebrating and we're gonna rub it in this city's fucking faces!"
The team erupted into cheers of celebration, jumping up and down in excitement.
"Roy!" Sam called out, "Where are we going?"
"Keeley?" Roy helped her up onto the bench.
"Well, Liverpool has much to offer, from pubs to clubs to the great Asian pastime of..."
"Karaoke!"
The people of Liverpool probably weren't expecting AFC Richmond and their supporters running riot across the city and its karaoke bars, and AFC Richmond probably weren't expecting to win either, but it was a great day for beautifully unexpected circumstances.
The whole team, Billie, Rebecca, Keeley and Sassy had found themselves sitting in a private room of a karaoke bar, taking it in turns to take to the stage. They'd all promptly returned to the hotel between the match and karaoke, giving them ample time to shower, freshen up and change.
Billie sat beside her brother, wearing a black corset style top and blue jeans, feeling much fresher than she did in the sweaty locker room.
As Sam sang the lyrics to Wonderwall Billie and Roy were the only two people in the room who refused to sing along, standing in solidarity with their dedication to Blur in the classic brit pop rivalry.
"You know," Billie smiled at her brother, clinging to her fourth glass of vodka and coke, "I'm so glad you got me this job."
"Yeah?" Her brother smiled.
"Yeah," Billie grinned, glancing around the room, Zoreaux and Dani jumping around shirtless, Nate doing shots with Colin and Isaac, Rebecca and Sassy sneaking out for a smoke, "I think this is what family's meant to feel like."
"You soppy muppet," Roy sighed, nudging his sister with a grin.
"Billie," Colin exclaimed as he weaved across the room towards her as Sam came to the end of his song, "We're up next!"
"What?" Billie shouted over the music, "I didn't put my name down!"
"I did," Colin laughed, holding his hands out to her, "Come on!"
Not wanting to cause a scene, Billie took his hands and followed him up to the small stage as Sam stepped down, returning to sit beside Roy as Colin took a microphone and handed one to Billie.
"What are we singing?" Billie asked.
"You'll see," Colin grinned as the opening to the song began to play, causing goosebumps to erupt over Billie's skin.
Of all the songs he could have chosen, Colin had chosen The Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing, which she had been quite vocal about it being one of her favourite films, but knowing that she and Jamie had watched it the night before added an extra layer of something to it.
"Now I've had the time of my life, no I never felt like this before," Colin began to sing into the microphone as the team watched on in awe, "Yes I swear it's the truth and I owe it all to you."
"'Cause I've had the time of my life and I owe it all to you," Billie sang, pointing at the team who sat in front of her.
They both sang their respective parts of the verses building up to the chorus as the team clapped along. Isaac and Sam stood at the front of the room, two stepping to the music as though they were at a concert.
"Just remember you're the one thing I can't get enough of, so I'll tell you something this could be love because," Colin and Billie sang together, Colin wrapping an arm around Billie's shoulder as they swayed to the music, both inebriated by cheap shots, "I've had the time of my life, no I never felt this way before, yes I swear it's the truth and I owe it all to you!"
Billie and Colin continued to give their all to the song, with various members of the team filming the performance while Roy mouthed the lyrics, having been forced to watch the film with his sister every time she stayed over at his house in Chelsea.
"Let's do the lift!" Colin muttered in Billie's ear as they approached the next chorus.
"Are you fucking crazy?" Billie shouted with a laugh, "Fuck it, why not?"
"You're the one thing." Colin sang as he paced towards one end of the stage.
"I can't get enough of," Billie continued as she made her way to the other end.
"So I'll tell you something," Colin sang in a low voice.
"This could be love," They both shouted before quickly tossing the microphones to Sam and Isaac as Billie ran towards Colin as Isaac and Sam took over on vocals.
Billie ran and jumped into Colin's arms, and it in no way resembled the lift from the film, their faces were a picture, as though they had just performed at a sold out Wembley Stadium. Colin held onto Billie as her legs were clumsily wrapped around his hips before he quickly placed her back on her feet.
"Because I've had the time of my life, no I never felt this way before, yes I swear it's the truth and I owe it all to you!" The team sang together, pointing at each other with the biggest smiles on their faces.
That performance would've gone on forever if they'd been allowed, but there was a long list of team members waiting to perform. So Colin and Billie took a bow, receiving applause from their team as Billie slipped into the seat beside Keeley.
"Where's Rebecca and Sassy?" Billie asked over the music.
"Smoking, you wanna go find them?" Keeley replied.
"Sure," Billie nodded, taking Keeley's hand in hers before the two women slipped out of the private room and back through the main part of the club towards the front door.
"There you are!" Keeley exclaimed as she and Billie ran towards the two women, hand in hand, "Fucking hell, we thought you guys ditched us!"
"Of course not!" Rebecca replied with a smile.
"I didn't know that I had abandonment issues till right now," Keeley laughed, wrapping an arm around Billie's waist.
"While we're out here, away from prying ears," Sassy smirked, glancing at the three women before focusing her attention on Billie, "Would you like to tell us what really happened in Manchester?"
"What?" Billie frowned, trying her best not to get rumbled by the three women, "I just stayed at a mate's."
"Girl mate or boy mate?" Sassy continued.
"Boy mate."
The three women screamed in hysteria as Keeley pulled Billie even closer, kissing the side of her head, "What's he like? What did you do? Where's he from?"
"More importantly, what's his name so I can social media stalk him," Sassy added.
"He's just a friend!" Billie laughed.
"Just a friend?" Rebecca raised her eyebrows.
"Just a friend." Billie nodded.
"What did he study?" Sassy asked, "We need to go if he's got good prospects for you, young lady."
"He's training to become a PE teacher," Billie lied as quickly as she could, but still kept it sports related.
She didn't really know whether it would be right to tell Keeley, she knew that at some point she would. But it didn't help that she didn't know what exactly she had with Jamie so she didn't know what to call it, and she didn't want to rush it either.
"You and your sporty men, eh?" Keeley nudged her with a smile.
"What can I say? I've got a type," Billie smiled as each of the women laughed.
"Anyway, we better get you back inside, Rebecca," Keeley smiled, "Your song's up next."
"What?" Rebecca remarked, "I didn't put a song in."
"Well, then someone else must've done it for you," Keeley grinned as she and Billie glanced at Sassy.
"Who could've done that?" Sassy grinned as she wrapped her arms around Keeley and Billie, guiding them back into the club.
"You are an arse!" Rebecca tossed her cigarette into the gutter and followed after the three women.
The four women weaved their way through the crowds until they got back to the team, where Coach Beard was finishing his performance of Bad Romance by Lady GaGa, earning applause from the whole room as his song came to a close.
"What have I missed?" Billie asked as she slipped into a seat beside Colin who was quick to hand her another drink.
"A lot!" Colin shouted over the music.
"Alright, who's next?" Beard asked the room.
"Oh, me, me," Sassy approached the stage, "Your turn, Rebecca, get on up here."
"Okay, I don't even know what I'm singing," Rebecca smiled as she took the microphone from her friend, "But I would like to dedicate it to the best friend a girl could ever have."
"That is me!" Sassy called out, "She's talking about me!"
The beginning of Let It Go from Frozen began to play and Billie felt goosebumps across her skin, reminded of all the times she watched it with Phoebe, as well as Roy.
"This is also dedicated to my goddaughter, Nora, I love you," Rebecca smiled before blowing a kiss at Sassy's phone as she filmed the performance.
As Rebecca began to sing the whole team watched in awe, letting her have her moment as they sat in speechless silence, amazed by her incredible voice. When she reached the chorus the whole team cheered with excitement, clapping their hands and screaming.
Billie held onto Colin as she watched her brother mouthing the lyrics, a reminder of all the times Phoebe had 'forced' them both to watch the film together. It took the both of them back to when the film first came out, Roy was still running on a high from winning the Champions League, Billie was about to sit her GCSEs and their sister was weeks away from giving birth to Phoebe.
The night carried on as expected, more songs, more drinks, and then an unexplained absence from Ted, which when Billie asked Rebecca about she assured her that he would be okay.
"Excuse me, very drunk man coming through!" Colin exclaimed as he and Isaac carried Nate out of the club on their shoulders, closely followed by Sam and Billie who were almost propping each other up.
"Guys, I think we should take the boys to the pub," Sassy suggested to the three women.
"Oh, I am so done, Sass, sorry," Rebecca sighed.
"Think I'm tapping out for the evening too, actually," Keeley added.
"Looks like it's just me and you, Sass master," Billie grinned.
"So we have to take eighteen young, handsome men all by ourselves?" Sassy sighed as she wrapped an arm around Billie.
"How will we cope?" Billie laughed.
"You two have fun," Rebecca smiled.
"We will!" Billie exclaimed.
"Alright, see you later," Sassy blew kisses.
"Be good!" Keeley called out as Billie, Sassy and the boys made their way down the street.
"Never!"
