Part Twenty Two

DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING DID YA?!?! Get ready for some dramaaaaaaaa.

Everyone stood there frozen, staring at the body of Tim, no one sure as to what to do now.

Jason let out a low whistle, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yikes, this is going to make family reunions awkward now." He clapped his hands once, making all the heroes turn to glare at him. "Whelp, I'll be taking my leave now. I've done what I set out to do now. I have a throne to claim. I'll be seeing you around, yeah?"

Dick snarled, stumbling to a standing position with a hand still pressed to his stomach. "Tim was one of the last to believe in you, Jason. He believed you could change with his whole heart, that you could be good. He wanted to help you be better." Something flashed in Jason's eyes. "But you've gone and ruined any chance of redemption. You're despicable."

Jason scoffed. "Well, at least you're finally admitting what you actually think of me, Dickiebird. You never believed I could be anything other than a heartless assassin, that was the whole point of you hiring Slade in the first place, right? To prove how much better you three were than me. Well, you know what?" Jason chuckled a sad laugh. "You were right about me and Tim was wrong, and look what it cost him. His life."

Dick continued to glare at Jason as his twin put his sword back in its sheath. He only looked back when he felt someone tug on his arm, turning to face Damian. "Maybe mother will let us use the Lazarus pits?"

Jason snorted. "Good luck getting there on your shot plane."

Damian's eyes narrowed. "What did you do?"

Jason smirked. "See for yourself."

Wally ran onto the plane and investigated, noticing the trashed panel before running back off. "He destroyed the control panel. It won't be able to fly."

"And by the time you can get it in the air and to the pits, it will be too late. Timothy will be beyond saving." Everyone looked up in shock at the sound of the new voice, Talia. She was approaching from the direction of the farm house, her sword strapped to her back. "The toxins on the blade Jason hit Timothy with negate the healing properties of the Lazarus pits and the longer they are in a person's system, the worse the chance of healing are."

"Mother!" Damian and Dick cried out, backing away from Tim's body. "You...you knew Jason was going to kill Tim?"

Talia waved them off. "Of course. In fact, I knew he was going to kill you all as soon as I told him about Richard hiring Slade Wilson. I just persuaded him not too. After all, if he doesn't work out as an heir, I still need some back ups."

Dick and Damian felt their worlds crumbling around them. Here was their mother, the person they grew up idolizing, conspiring with their possibly psychotic brother to kill their other brother and talking so nonchalantly about it.

"But mother, why kill Tim? He's the best fighter out of all of us, wouldn't you want him as an heir?" Dick asked.

"Because, my dear son, Timothy was the glue that held the four of you together. Get rid of him and you fall apart. Besides, I had to see for myself if Timothy was truly as heroic as he was claiming to be. If he had dodged the blade thrown at him, which he easily could've, then the blade would've hit young Kaldur over here. But he chose to die for his teammate instead, ruling him out of the race of heir twice over." Talia explained. "Now with Timothy out of the picture, the three of you are without your voice of reason and logic, much easier to mold."

Dick hissed, partly in pain and partly in betrayal. "You're no mother of mine."

Talia let out a loud, brash laugh. "Oh, I will always be your mother." She turned to look at Jason. "Come now, like I said earlier, we have a lot of work to do at home."

"Yes, mother." Jason walked past the heroes with a smirk on his face to his mother, going to stand next to her.

"You're crazy if you think we're just going to let you walk away from this!" Artemis snapped.

"You'll have to choose between capturing us or saving the citizens of Gotham. You see, while Jason was keeping your team of younglings busy, I was planting ten bombs throughout the city to ensure our escape. They are set to go off in twelve minutes. Chop chop."

"You're bluffing."

"Is that a risk you're willing to take?" Talia raised a brow. The heroes exchanged a look and Talia smirked. "Thought so. Now, if you'll excuse us, we'll be taking our leave."

Talia and Jason turned and walked away, leaving the heroes with the dead body of Tim and a city full of potential bombs.

"How do you want to handle this?" Black Canary asked Batman. "It is your city."

Batman nodded, divulging the plan to the other heroes. They all took off to the city with the plan in mind, leaving Bruce, Damian, and Dick with Tim's body.

"What...what are we going to do?" Damian asked, looking up at his brother and father, the only family he really felt he had left.

"Tim deserves a proper burial. And justice. Jason needs to pay for what he's done." Dick growled.

Bruce was quiet, looking down at the face of a son he barely got to know. He couldn't help but think if he had been there more for his children, this could've been avoided. If he wasn't so absorbed in his work, if he was more attentive, if he was more fatherly.

But then he thinks of the unhinged look in Jason's eyes when he spoke, the twisted grin on his face, he realizes that his son was probably suffering a psychotic break from all the betrayals and changes in his life happening so close together.

And then he goes back down that same path. If he had been paying closer attention, would he have noticed Talia's manipulation of Jason's fragile psyche and been able to stop it?

Too many if's and none of them are going to change the fact that one of his sons is dead and another of his sons is the killer.
