Chapter 3
Carl smiles.
"No problem."
Carl gives Sam 600 dollars and Sam receives it, thankful. He puts the money in his bag. Carl sees a glimpse of the cat mask in the bag.
"What's that?"
"A cat mask. I wear it at masquerades and Halloween parties. And sometimes, when we film sketches at home."
"Okay. Cute."
"Thanks."
Sam closes the bag. Riley comes home and locks the door up. She hears voices from the living room and goes to it to see what's happening. Sam and an unknown man talks. She sees the money in Sam's hand. Sam looks at her.
"Thieves broke in and smashed the TV and the window. My boss, Carl, is giving us money to pay for it."
"Why didn't you just call me?"
"Carl came just a little bit later. I didn't have the time to call you."
"Okay. I understand."
Carl looks at Sam, and then Riley.
"I think it's time for me to go now."
Sam waves to Carl while he walks out the doorway.
"Bye, Carl!"
"Bye, Sam!"
Carl walks to his car and drives away from the house.
Riley: Carl seems very generous.
"I know. He must be pretty rich. He's working as a boss at the office."
"Money could vary even if you two would have the same job. At different work places."
"Can we just stop talking about this now? Let's go out to shop the TV and the window."
"Sure! But first, we have to pick the kids up from school."
Sam nods. He goes to the carpet in the hallway and picks up the car keys underneath.
Just when they've got into the car, it starts to thunder. Sam looks shocked at Riley who looks calm, even though the thunder is loud and the rain is chattering on the car.
"Start driving now. The thunder can't reach us when we're in the car."
Sam can't stop thinking about the thunder and the things that's been happening to him in the last few days. He tries to shake it off his head but it's impossible for him.
They arrive to their kids school. Simon and Lindsay plays "tag" with their friends. Riley smiles.
"They seem to have fun. We shouldn't rush them."
"Yeah..."
After about 3 minutes, Sam looks at the watch on his arm.
"I think we should interrupt them now."
Sam waves the car window down and shouts.
"Simon! Lindsay!"
They turn around towards Sam and waves to him.
"Time to drive you home."
Simon and Lindsay sighs and goes to the car, reluctantly.
They fasten their seat belts while looking out at their friends. Simon sighs.
"This is the first time we play with others on the schoolyard. We've got friends. And we didn't want it to end."
Riley looks back at them while Sam drives to the mall.
"You can play with them tomorrow too."
"What if they want to play with other kids tomorrow?"
Riley shrugs.
"I don't know. I don't think they give up on you two that easily. You're so nice."
Simon and Lindsay smile.
"Thanks, mom."
Lindsay looks at the road and notices that Sam doesn't drive to their house.
"Where are we going?"
Sam: To the shopping mall. We are going to buy a new TV and a new window. There were thieves in our house.
"Did they take them?"
"No, they got destroyed."
Simon and Lindsay look at Sam, skeptical. They know about what he's doing and suspects that he did it himself.
"You don't believe me? I saw them and it wasn't me."
A part of it was true. There were no thieves there but it wasn't Sam that destroyed the TV and the windows.
