Chapter four: The Hospital
As soon as I arrived at the hospital, my brother Josh met me at the door and urged me to follow him.
We hastily made our way down the hall, and that's when I noticed sweat on Josh's forehead.
This might be worse than I thought.
"Room 204. This way!" Josh gestures at me to hurry along. We turned into another hallway, just slightly shorter than the last one.
"201, 202, 203, 204." I caught myself counting aloud, but I don't think my brother cared.
The nurse made us wait before letting us into the room, apparently because of some private conversation or something, and while I was waiting outside the door, I decided to reply to all my Instagram notifications. Although most were from random people, they all had one common favorite, well, five, actually.
Every single notification had something to do with ZaynInstaSwag, ExpensiveStuff8020, EZMoney55, CoolAsIce-HotAsFire, and LewisBaeSexyDude.
I checked each one of their profiles, no pictures posted on any single one of them.
Huh. They must want to be anonymous, I thought, stroking my smooth, dimpled chin.
There were endless comments from all of them, and I couldn't help but blush at a few.
'You're so pretty.'
'Wow, you look great!'
'Your skin looks as smooth as ivory!"
I scrambled into the room, still wearing my backpack. I took it off, letting it fall to the ground as I strided over to my dad's hospital bed.
My mother and little sister, Bree, were already there. My mother was crying, but I don't think Bree understood what was going on. She was just three anyways, how could she know?
"It was an accident in the lab." Josh murmured, hanging his head.
"We're doing all we can," a nurse sent my mom a concerned glance. "but there's not much we can do."
My mother burst into a fresh set of tears. My dad was lying on a hospital bed, sleeping. For a few moments the only sounds were my mother sniffling and the unsteady beeps of the heart monitor until the adjusting of hospital sheets broke the silence.
"Mary Sue?" My dad shifted, slowly waking up. My family got the hint and left the room.
I pulled up a chair next to the bed and sat down.
"Yes, father?"
"Mary.. you were always my favorite child."
I opened my mouth to speak, but said nothing. A ramble was coming on, I could feel it in the air.
"Always be yourself. Never let haters get you down. You are perfect just the way you are. You are literally perfect."
"No.. I'm so ugly."
My dad continued.
"I wanted to say that you need to believe in yourself. Never doubt who you are. No matter what others may think, you are smart. You are amazing at everything that I know of. Be the light in the world. The world is a cruel and lonely place. Be the change you want to see. Nobody can put out your candle. The candle represents you. Your soul. Your heart. The darkness represents the world..."
At this point I was counting how many times spit came spewing out of my father's mouth. One point if it landed on the bed, three points if it landed on the pillow, five points if it hit me, ten if it hit anything above my shoulders, and a smashing fifty points if it came back down and landed on his face.
I was on a roll, seventy points in two minutes!
"Goodbye, favorite child."
"Wait what?" I sat up. What a shame, I had probably missed some really good live advice.
Then I heard it.
The constant, solid beeping sound.
The heart monitor had stopped.
