" Look, I don't know what to call these powers, if we're not saying 'it's magic' out loud, then it's not. "
STEPHEN STRANGE
A successful, yet arrogant surgeon, who's known worldwide for his brilliant abilities to save lives by the thousands. And that's exactly where his position in the universe stays.
No life threatening car crash.. No Sorcerer Supreme.. And definitely no magic. At least, not your typical magic.
The problem is, Stephen's work is never perfect. That's a mortal's flaw; and he's never come to terms with the fact that at the end of the day, you can't save everyone.
And luckily, he's reminded that on most nights.
Stephen's powers first mostly originated from the guilt he felt after losing a patient's life, and after years and years of bottling up those hidden emotions, they poured out into some kind of supernatural powers. These powers led the poor doctor to magically link with the wandering souls of the dead who haven't yet found their way to the 'afterlife'. And most of the ghosts were the ones he could recognize, lives he couldn't have saved.
The first few nights, Stephen swore these 'ghosts' in his bedroom were just the after effects of the sleeping pills he's forced himself to take. When his penthouse began to get crowded by these nightly guests, he stopped taking the pills.
Most nights, sleep stopped becoming an option, so Stephen stayed up with the ghosts. He was determined to try and communicate with them, even though at first glance, he was a bit scared. So one night, he did it. He talked to them, finally recognizing these lost souls as people or, whatever was left of them. But the interaction wasn't as heroic as you might think. These ghosts were stubborn, Stephen found himself pleading, begging on his knees, broken to tears as he asked these spirits of what they could possibly want with the poor doctor.
The first ghost that responded, was one of his nightly regulars. Stephen recognized the ghost to be about in her 20s, one of his first patients, a girl who had died a few minutes into the operation, there was something about a clouded tumor in her brain and Stephen could remember that afternoon well.. the straight face he played out to the parents of the young girl, as he told the fate of their daughter. The parents, who were still in shock of losing their only child, stubbornly stayed put in the visitor's center. So her spirit warned Stephen that there was more to come, as long as there's life, there will always be death. And most importantly, that he should first forgive himself before attempting to move on. But Stephen knew forgiveness wasn't an option right now.
During the awakening of his powers, Stephen learned that 1.) Not only did these visions of people appear during the night, but also in the daytime as well. 2.) These images weren't just of people but clearly ghosts, the lost souls of the dead. 3.) He quickly found out that the only reason why ghosts still resided in the realm of the living, was because they still needed a bit of a push to get to the afterlife.
So as his powers grew stronger, Stephen even consulted a close friend of his at the hospital, a nurse name Christine, a woman he thought he could trust about his problems [hoping it could strengthen their bond at first], but a colleague of theirs overheard their conversation and tried to out the poor doctor to their boss. It shut Stephen up real quick when he received a letter in the mail consulting him that he should try a therapist, or keep shut about his 'superstitions' [with the threat of being forcibly removed from the hospital and taken to an asylum]. As arrogant as he was, Stephen was not going to be shut down by men who thought better for himself than he did. He didn't think he was 'crazy' at all. Stephen had seen the paranormal with his own eyes, communicated and talked to them-
and if he could do all of that, how easy could it to be save them as well?
Stricken with grief, Stephen belived he could STILL save all the patients he failed to help in life. As tricky as some of these ghosts turn out to be about staying in this realm instead of the ones for the dead, very few spirits complied with Stephen to work together to finally be put to rest. And the ones that wanted to stay restless, well, they were an actual problem, as they strayed away from Stephen's telepathic communications.
But to accomplish this task couldn't take the work of one man. He hated the idea, but he needed help. There was no one in the hospital he could trust, and outside that, he didn't make as many friends.
So he started digging. Doing research of his own, even used his social life to find people like him who were willing to help and not some online conspiracy theorists, real people in the real world who wanted to be heroes, and maybe, just maybe, bust some ghosts?
