Chapter Three: The Ghost of Christmas Past
And with that, the spirits of Loki's partners vanished into the darkness leaving him once again alone in his room.
"Whoa, that's scary stuff. Hey. should we be worried about the kids in the audience reading this?" Ellie asked me
"Nah. That's all right. This is culture. Besides, most of the people on Wattpad probably aren't kids. We're fine," I said
So, Loki settled down for the night with some protection just in case. Meanwhile, Ellie and I were trying to get over the gate so we could look into Loki's window. She wanted to know what was going on so I told her we had to climb over the gate. I made it, now it was her turn to jump down. She didn't want to though. So, I just told her to jump and I'd catch her. She did jump but I didn't catch her. Oops. Ellie then remembered that she forgot her jellybeans on the other side.
So she just opened the gate and walked through before coming back and closing the gate! It was open this whole time?! You know what, never mind. It's almost one o'clock. Using a grappling hook and rope, we climbed up the tree outside of Loki's window and climbed up. Loki had slipped into the empty silence of a dreamless sleep.
But was woken when his clock chimed telling him it was now one o'clock. At first, there was nothing. Just the darkness. But a bright light shone, lighting up the whole room. Loki opened the curtains of his bed to see what the light was. He didn't see much until he saw a little ghost child. A little girl, to be specific.
"Are you the spirit whose coming was foretold to me?" Loki asked
"I am," She said
"But... you're just a child."
"I can remember nearly 1,900 years. I am Morgan, the Ghost of Christmas Past."
"What business has brought you here?"
"Your welfare."
Loki scoffed, "A night's unbroken rest might aid my welfare."
"Your salvation then. Take heed. Come."
Loki got out of bed as his window opened.
"I beg you, Spirit, l... I am mortal and liable to fall," Loki said
"A touch of my hand and you shall fly," Morgan said.
Loki took her hand and I was ready to throw the grappling hook at them. They flew off and I threw the hook which attached to Loki. Ellie and I held onto the rope as we started to fly over London. We flew further as a light appeared in the distance. Loki asked what it was thinking it couldn't be dawn. It wasn't. It was the past. We flew into it and we were now above a forest. Well, Ellie and I were in the trees getting hit by trees, branches, and so many other things.
But we started to head down and out of danger. And so they arrived in Loki's childhood. It was the afternoon of Christmas Eve and Loki was conscious of a thousand odors, each one connected with a thousand thoughts and hopes and joys and cares long, long forgotten. Loki could easily recognize where he was. It was his old school. He recognized his old classmates and friends. He tried saying hello but Morgan explained that they can't hear him since these are only shadows of his past. We all went into his school.
And what a flood of memories came back to him as Loki beheld his old classroom. Loki remembered everything from his childhood classroom almost as if he had never left. He could remember it all so well. Morgan then pointed out someone still in the room. Loki beheld a small boy. A boy he knew, oh, very well indeed. It was him. Loki never went home for Christmas because he thought the holiday would give him more time to study and read. Preparing himself for work once he left school. He used the holidays as an excuse to get more work down and have some solitude.
"Us Readers don't understand these things," Ellie said watching Loki alone instead of being with his family
"You were never a lonely child?" I asked
"In your Squidward book, you gave me 4,000 brothers and sisters."
"Sheesh. Readers probably don't understand these things."
Morgan said that there were more Christmas' in this place and offered to show him more. But the years were all the same. The years performed their terrible dance and in a moment, Loki had seen his entire childhood pass. He saw his old schoolroom age and decay. The decaying part being bad for us. We were sitting on a shelf that collapsed on us and we were now being squashed by statues and the wall next to us. Loki's old headmaster, Sam, walked into the room. It was Loki's graduation day.
The day Loki would go out into the real world and become a businessman. Ellie and I weren't really paying attention because we were trying to push the statues off us. We did get them off but then just slid down the end of the broken shelf. Well, that hurt. Sam continued talking to Loki while Morgan said to move on to another Christmas. A moment later, Loki found himself standing on a city street Iooking at a building he had not seen in years. It was where Loki had his first job. Mobius' Jetski factory.
Once again, it was Christmas Eve. Night was falling. And the lamplighters were plying their trade. The lamplighters were me and Ellie at the moment and I accidentally lit her on fire. I looked down to see a frozen bucket of water. Well, sorry, Ellie. I pushed her into it and the fire was out. Mobius walked out of the factory to see the Lamplighters at work and the night had fallen. It was time for his Christmas Eve party. We all went inside to watch the Christmas party. But Mobius wasn't the only old face he recognized.
Odin and Laufey were there too looking so much younger than they were the last time Loki saw them. Mobius made a little Christmas speech and the party began. But Loki wasn't enjoying the party. He was still working and was more concerned about the expenses on the party. Mobius just told him to stop working and enjoy himself. That night, Loki would also meet his first and only lover, Sylvie. It was like Love at first sight except it wouldn't last as long as they wanted. Morgan showed Loki this Christmas as much as he didn't want to see it.
"Another year before our wedding," Loki," Sylvie said disappointed
"Well, it can't be helped, Sylvie. How could we marry now? There's not even enough for a decent home. The investments haven't grown as they should," Loki explained
"So you said last year."
"Business continues to be poor."
"You're a partner in your own firm now."
"And barely clearing expenses."
"You said the partnership was the goal."
"This is for you. I love you, Sylvie."
"You did once."
Sylvie walked away. Loki would never marry or love anyone after this. Why do you think he's still alone today?
"Spirit, show me no more. Why do you delight in torturing me?" Loki asked in tears at the memory
"I told you. These were the shadows of the things that have been. That they are what they are, do not blame me," Morgan said
"Leave me!"
So, Morgan took him back home as her time with him was up anyway. Loki didn't notice as he just sat down and cried. He did love Sylvie but he loved his work more. That's what he regrets the most.
