Down to the Water

Wanda, Vision

Because Wanda loved the island last time, Tony was generous enough to buy it for them. He knew how unhappy Wanda felt, staying with everyone else and having nowhere to go.
So Vision drove her down the old beaten paths, just like last time. Ferried across the water, and onto the island.
She was happy again. A smile lit up her face. Everything about her was brighter than the sunrise.
The beaches still had all of the old tide pools, and the house was just as dusty and small as it was before. Wanda loved everything about it, and Vision couldn't tell you how warm and fuzzy it made him feel.
They walked into the little hut and went about cleaning it. Sweeping out the sand, chucking dead bugs and animals out of the windows, finally getting the electricity working, the works. When it was all done, the sun no longer hung directly above everything, but inched closer to the other side of the world and dipping behind the water.
Not feeling like going down to the water, they went to bed and the old, stained, twin-sized mattress waited for them. Snuggling up close, with her head tucked under his chin, Wanda sighed. She felt at home. The compound just wasn't right for her. Too many people, but also not enough. Nothing was the same without Pietro.
Vision hugged her closer, and eventually they fell asleep.

They found a little cove while they explored the island. It was rocky, and salt sat in the cracks of the boulders. But the water there was crystal clear, even when the waves crashed against the rocks. Wanda saw sea urchins clinging to the craggy bottom of the shores, and starfish crawling slowly over the reef.
Tiny crabs dug themselves into the fissures just above the waterline, so they could still be damp and not get tugged away by the currents. Vision had a lot of fun pointing out the little ones and watching her try to catch them.
They sat together on one of the flatter rocks, arms entangled.
"This is the best decision we've ever made," Wanda sighed. "I wish we could just stay here forever."
Vision thought about that for a minute. "Well, maybe we can. This island is private property now. It would be difficult to find us."
Wanda sighed again. "Yeah, but we're needed, Vis. We can't just drop everything to live our own lives, we've got a whole planet to protect."
He looked into her eyes. "Yes, we can. They can't rely on us forever. The team isn't going to stay like this forever. People are going to break off of the compound, build their own lives. The government can't do anything about that. We're people, and they can't deprive us of our basic need of exploration. Wanda, I've spent so much time trying to figure out why I'm here. Why I'm alive. I'm not human, so what is my purpose? What should I strive for, other than peace and keeping everyone out of trouble? But I'm done thinking about that. I've found the answer, Wanda. I'm here to live. I get to love, to enjoy life, and then I'll die. That's what it's all about. Not just preventing an inevitable future, but staying in the present and watching as everything moves around me. That's the meaning of life. The meaning of life is... life. You live as you watch it all go by."
She stared at him, awestruck. She'd never really thought of him as anything other than human, she'd nearly forgotten that he was vibranium and synthetic tissue. "I- I don't know what to say- Vis what are you... oh my god." She stuttered, then realized.
He was holding a tiny velvet box. He awkwardly got down on one knee, salt dusting his shins.
"Wanda, will you marry me?"
"Yes!"
