I Never Saw A Soldier Cry
My school did this play with a few differences that I liked better than this school. I will use those differences in this story
1: Our butterflies in the beginning were more beautiful
2: We had two girls play Raja. One past and one telling the story. It made it less confusing.
3: Ours was theater in the round so the audience almost felt like they were part of the play.
Quick summary of the play if you have never seen it and don't want to watch the movie. It's about Jewish children in World War 2. They were housed at this makeshift school just trying to survive with the threat of Nazis always on the forefront of their minds. They are just trying to do life their new way, the only way they now can.

"Please Mr. Stark. Please." Peter begged Tony.
"No. You already have enough on your plate you don't need to add play rehearsal to your already busy schedule. And beside you want to in the public light even more?" Tony said in response
"I can handle it." Tony gave Peter a look in response. "How about this if I fine someone on the team to join with me can I try out?" Peter asked hopefully.
Tony sighed. "Okay if you find someone you is willing to join you can."
"Yes thank you Mr. Stark!" Peter said before he ran off.
"It's Tony." Tony yelled playfully after him.
Peter ran to the common room to ask if anyone would tryout for the school play with him. Upon asking a few people, Sarah, Bucky and Nat's daughter, agreed she would. "It will be fun."
As they went to try out, Sarah read about the play, I Never Saw Another Butterfly. It was a heavy play. She knew that no matter what role they got, this was going to be a tough play to watch, especially for Steve and her dad.
When they finished trying out, Sarah was rather fearful. She really hoped to get the part of Irena (Raja's, main character, mentor). She knew she could never pass as one of the children or was not good enough to be one of the Rajas. She just prayed to not be part of the ensemble. She got her mom's fire red hair and her dad's everything else. She was way more muscular than petite. This meant that if she got the part of any ensemble it would not be as a dancer dressed as a butterfly.
A week later, Peter and Sarah got emails telling want parts they got. As soon as Peter read his email he jumped with joy. Sarah had the opposite reaction of all color draining from her face.
"Look Sarah! I got the part of Honza!" (Main male character) Peter exclaimed. "What did you get?"
"Nazi soldier." Sarah said barely a whisper.
"What? What did you say?" Peter asked unsure if had heard her right.
"They said that my tough looking muscular body and lack of boys doing the play made me a great person to play one of the faceless Nazi soldiers." Sarah said almost scared of what she was saying.
"Woah. That is.. that's...your dad..." Peter shuddered
"Yep. How about we have fun with the avenger and not tell them what the play is until opening night" Sarah said, trying to make the best of a difficult situation.
They both agreed to let the avengers guess what the play was, only telling them that Peter got the role of the lead male and saying that Sara got a role in the ensemble. The avengers knew they could just ask the school what the play was but they decided to play along with their kids. Aunt May knew what they were doing and promised not to mention what the play was.
The avengers loved to watch Peter and Sarah practice their lines and actions. Nat even gave the "butterfly" dancers ballerina tips when they came over. A lot of the avengers assumed that Sara did have lines due to her practicing so much with Peter and knowing all the lines. They never really saw her practice "her" part. Well what do you expect? Her entire role was to march across the stage and look scary. She did however practice her walk in private when no one, especially her parent, was not around. She nearly wore a hole in the floor from all of her practicing.
The avengers did start to get suspicious of Sarah's role on two occasions. The first was when she got a package with a part of boats in it. Not just any boats, midcalf high, lase up, jet black boats with small pieces of medal in the soles. When she walked in them them, the sound they made put both Steve and Bucky on edge. But, being good family members they didn't say anything.
The next occasion was the day before Sarah and Peter got to put on their full costumes. Sarah requested that someone do her hair tight to her head so it wouldn't stick up or down. Sarah's costume consisted of a face mask that covered to entire face and head and she wanted her hair not to show. As lucky would have it, her dad was the one that put her hair up in complex braid. With her mom's beautiful red hair mostly hidden, she looked even more like her father and in turn even more like a guy.
True to their plan, on opening night both Peter and Sarah dressed in their costumes. Their family came in right as they were doing finishing details on their costumes.
"Would you like to do the honors?" Peter asked Sarah as he held out his left forearm, not seeing their onlooking family.
"Not really but how else will it get on there." Sarah replied half joking as she wrote Peter's number on his forearm. "4683. Should stay on for the rest of the week."
Steve and Bucky knew the tattoo. They just hoped they were seeing it wrong.
"Well final detail. Lets get these badges of honor on." Sarah said sarcastically
She helped Peter in on his "Jew" star of David. She slide on her Nazi swastikas. Peter looked to make sure it was straight. "Filthy Jew" Sarah repeated the joke insult she had started saying as soon as she found out her role.
"Retched Nazi" Peter replied with a smirk.
"Nope. Nope. This can't be happening." Bucky finally spoke up
"Well it is happening. The play you all are going to see is called 'I Never Saw Another Butterfly.' It's a real tear jerker so I packed tissues for you all." Peter said with confidence.
"And Dad, Uncle Steve," Sarah exhaled slowly. "There are parts of it that I know could send either of you into a PTSD attack, even if I wasn't dressed like the enemy. So I am having the whole play recorded so you guys can watch it when you are ready if you miss some."
"Okay. We better get going." Steve said still a little shocked by what Sarah was and said.
As they drove to the school, Peter decide to share the final important detail. "The show is preformed in the round so we may get to sit with you when we are not on stage." Everyone got in their seats, lucky far away from the sound box.
The play started with the butterfly dances coming out and doing their dance. Nat was amazed and in a way proud of these girls with their black skin tight leotard with beautiful wings attached to their back and extending out to their arms. They danced with so much grace but also sadness.
The children came out. As the voice announced the name, the whole family was ready to be cry, especial Steve and Bucky knowing this was the side of the war that they never personally saw. The whole family nearly lost it when Peter waved then frozen with the phrase "Honza perish at Auschwitz."
The voice, whom they later recognized as Ned, gave the background of the setting. He barely finished before the train sound was played. For a second, Steve and Bucky were back in the war. Ned's voice brought them back just enough. Suddenly the auditorium filled with the sound of the siren. Three black figures marched across the center area, marching the way the Nazi's marched. Their boots clicked as the hit the floor. The avengers family recognized the shortest of the three as Sarah. Even this fact did not help to make it feel less real, as the one of the "soldiers" come to stand right near their table.
The play continued. They all came to expect that if the sirens sounded, the next sound would be the horrible sound of Nazi jack boots. Every time Steve and Bucky got tense. The family did find it funny that during the sense with the Nazi's posed to hit a child, the shortest soldier was the one to nearly hit Honza. Steve and Bucky had to smile at how rebellious Peter's character was against the Nazi cause to break the children. By second announcement of the names their was barely a dry eye in the room but then the real tear jerker come. This time the children walked off when their name was said instead of just freezing. The scream that young Raja let out when Honza was announced was gut retching. Then the good-bye came. The good-bye scene between Raja and Honza was enough to make anyone who wasn't crying completely lose it. Peter gave his lines beautifully. The avengers could help but notice that the shortest Nazi was the one to lead Honza to his death. The play finished soon after. Even though they did not know the girl was played either one of the Rajas, they were still moved by her passion for what she was saying. Everyone took their bows and Peter and Sarah returned to their families.
"So what did you think?" Peter asked, noticing that everyone had a little bit of red eyes.
"Wow just wow." Clint said.
"That was...." Bucky said unsure of himself.
"Gut retching" Steve finished him.
"Incredible." Nat said. "I am very proud of you both.
"I'm sorry that we didn't tell you the play. We wanted it to be a surprise." Sarah replied.
"That it was indeed." Loki commented.
The family went out to dinner celebrate a successful play, (and because the play was so sad, the main chiefs, Steve and Buck, didn't want to cook).
If you like this idea, let me know. I may do another play that my school did, 13 Ways to Screw up your College Interview. But that would be a while out. Hope you enjoyed. God bless you.
