Hawkant: Love Thy Neighbor Pt.1

A/N: Non-Superhero AU.

Scott is in the kitchen making grilled cheese sandwiches when his ten-year-old daughter, Cassie, comes running in and tugs on his sleeve.

"What is it, peanut?" Scott asked.

"Someone's moving into the house next door. There's a moving truck outside." Cassie told him.

"Well, that's neat. How's about after lunch, we go over and greet our new neighbors." Scott replied.

"Yeah, let's do that!" Cassie agreed excitedly.

After lunch, Scott and Cassie walk next door and stand on the porch of the neighboring house.

"Oh dear, should I have made cookies or a casserole?" Scott said worriedly after ringing the doorbell.

"Chill, Daddy, I think just saying, "Hi, welcome to the neighborhood." is good enough." Cassie replied.

A blonde man in a black t-shirt and purple flannel answers the door. Scott is immediately entranced by the man's rugged handsomeness.

"Can I help you?" the man asked.

"Daaad...say something." Cassie whispered out of the corner of her mouth when her father still didn't respond.

"Huh? Oh! Sorry, I got a little lost in my head there for a sec." Scott said shaking his head.

"My daughter and I live next door and we wanted to come by to welcome you to the neighborhood and say, "Hello", so.....hello." he said shifting nervously from one foot to the other.

"Hi! I'm Cassie and my daddy's name is Scott." Cassie added, waving her hand.

"Well, hello Cassie and Scott, I'm Clint." Clint greeted with a smile.

Then a golden retriever in a purple bandanna comes up and sits next to Clint's feet.

"And this is my pal, Lucky." Clint said patting the dog's shoulder.

"Aww, what a cute doggie, can I pet him?" Cassie asked.

"Sure, kid." Clint nodded.

Cassie pets the dog behind his ears, causing his tail to thump against the floor.

"Yo, Clint, is that the chinese delivery dude?" a female voice called out from inside the house.

"No, Nat, it's the neighbors saying "hi"!" Clint called back over his shoulder.

A redheaded woman comes to the door and drapes an arm around Clint's shoulders. This sends just a slight pang of disappointment through Scott.

"Nat, this is Scott and Cassie, they live next door." Clint told her, wrapping an arm around her waist.

"Hi, you must be Clint's....wife? Girlfriend?....Lesbian roommate?" Scott asked, his voice slightly strained.

"Hahaha, dude, you're hilarious. Nah, I'm his best friend. I'm just here to help him move, I'll be heading back to New York in the morning." Nat replied.

"Awesome!" Scott said excitedly(excited because it meant that Clint was single).

"Well, it was nice to meet you. Cassie and I are gonna head home now." Scott said walking backwards.

Then Scott lost his footing and tumbles down the porch stairs. Cassie facepalms then shakes her head.

"Woah! Scott, you okay, man?" Clint asked him.

"Yep!" Scott replied shooting to his feet.

When Scott and his daughter got home, Scott flops face down onto the couch and groans pathetically into the cushion.

"Daddy...can I be bluntly honest with you?" Cassie asked, leaning on the arm of the couch next to Scott's head.

"Go ahead." Scott sighed.

"That gay panic you had back there was painful to watch." Cassie said.

"*sigh* Yeah....I figured." Scott mumbled.

"I looked like a total idiot." he whimpered.

Feeling sympathy for her father, Cassie gives him a pat on the head. Meanwhile, in Clint's new house, he and Nat sit on the living room floor, eating their chinese food.

"So...those new neighbors are nice." Nat said smirking.

"Yeah, they were." Clint agreed with a nod.

"You gonna ask Scott out or what?" Nat asked jabbing her friend with her elbow.

"Hmm!?" Clint replied with a mouthful of noodles.

"Scott! You know, the adorable, funny, hot guy next door?" Nat said, sticking her chopsticks into her carton of food and putting it down.

Clint swallows the food in his mouth, then sets the rest of it aside.

"Come on, Nat, I just met the guy." Clint said rolling his eyes.

"So, you don't find him attractive?" Nat asked, folding her arms and raising an eyebrow.

"I-I didn't say that." Clint replied, looking down and blushing.

"Then what are you saying?" Nat chuckled.

"All I'm saying is, I don't know him well enough, that's all." Clint told his friend.

"Then get to know him, dumba**, and then ask the dilf out!" Nat groaned, dragging her hands over her face.

"Why are you so concerned about my dating life!?" Clint grumbled, starting to get annoyed.

"Because you're my friend and I want you to be happy!" Nat replied, dramatically flopping onto her back.

Last year, Clint went through a vicious breakup with his ex-boyfriend, Brock. Since then he hasn't really expressed the desire to date, no matter how many times Nat had tried to set him up with someone. Yes, Clint did find Scott very attractive and thought his personality was straight up adorable. But, Clint wasn't sure if he had the emotional strength to date someone again. Also, Scott was a father...of the most adorable child albeit...and Clint had never dated someone with a child before. Certainly there are different rules when it comes to dating a single parent, right?

"I appreciate you looking out for me and all, but I'm an adult and can handle being single just fine." Clint said before tickling the bottom of Nat's foot.

"I know, but at least give him a chance, why don't ya." Nat replied, gently kicking her friend in the gut.

"Fine, if it'll get you off my back." Clint laughed lightly.

They finish their late lunch then continue to unpack boxes and stuff. That night, Nat slept on the couch while Clint slept in his bed with Lucky curled up by his feet. The next morning, Clint drives his friend to the airport so she can catch her flight back to New York. When he got back home, he saw Cassie boarding the school bus and her dad, Scott sitting on a bench on his front porch, drinking coffee. For a moment he debated in his head whether or not to go over and say, "good morning", and maybe have some coffee too.
