Bucky Barnes- Soulmates
[I need some help. My families been asking me what I want for Christmas and the only thing I can think of is gift cards. Any suggestions..?]
In a world where aliens exist and cars can fly, the universe maybe thought, why not add soulmates? Because having a soulmate is so great?
Bucky doesn't think so anymore. He used to, though, staring at the band of gray around his wrist, dreaming of what they'd be like. But then the whole falling off a train happened, and he became a brainwashed solider, so the idea of a soulmate was forgotten.
But it glows suddenly one day when he's out with Steve. He stops, latches onto his wrist and stars as the gray shimmers into a bright, glittery gold.
"Steve," Bucky looks up, looks around. There's hundreds of people, and the longer he stays put, the shimmering grows weaker. "Steve," he says more urgently, and his best friend pauses and turns. "M-My wrist, it's.." And then the color is gone, back to its dull, lifeless gray and Bucky sighs. "Never mind."
______
Days later he's at a newspaper stand, combing through the papers when it happens again. It glows fiercer this time. Then the end of a stick knocks against his ankle.
His head shoots up and he hopes that it's his soulmate. He wants a soulmate, even if he's thought so long and hard about never finding one, he wants to meet them.
But it's a man, heavy shades over his leather face. He apologizes and moves on. The gold band dies out after a while and Bucky tries not to let the sting of disappointment show.
_____
Bucky's soulmate must be avoiding him, he concludes. Because the band glows gold everyday now as he goes out, eyes frantically searching through the large crowd for them. It always fades, though.
On the second week, Bucky's determined to find his soulmates. He's planted himself on a bench, running shoes on just in case, a cap over his head, and a large jacket to hide his metal arm. He doesn't need to see his wrist anymore to know if it glows, because he's so used to know when they're around him.
He's been waiting for a while now, and it's cold, but he continues to sit there without moving. And then he feels the familiar tingling on his wrist. Quickly, his eyes pick through the crowds and spots a woman. She stopped in the middle of the walkway, shoulders tense as she turns and meets Bucky's eyes.
His wrist burns, but he doesn't look away. He stands, strides forward and reaches her.
"Hi," He murmurs softly, tugging his sleeve down to expose the luminous band around his skin. "I think you're the one I've been looking for."
She does the same, her band the same color and when their hands touch, the bands race down their skin and explode together where their hands meet.
"I guess so," She says.
