Promise me (Natasha Romanoff x Reader)

"I hope we meet again, Natasha." Y/N said, smiling gently as she watched Natasha on the edge of the roof.

Natasha hesitated, her movements slow as she turned around to looking into the e/c eyes she loved.

"I-I..." Natasha bit the insides of her cheek. "I have to go." Her green eyes looked down on the floor almost like she was ashamed of looking Y/N in the eye. "I have to go." She repeated, more firmly.

"I know." Y/N's smile didn't fade. "And you should."

Natasha glanced at Y/N one last time, a light blush appeared as she saw her smile genuinely for the first time. She never saw her smile genuinely before, all she saw was the coy and sly smiles that she would wear to seduce all her victims before killing them or getting what she needed.

She was a assassin in training after all. That's what she did.

Natasha didn't want to be one of them. She wanted to be the one that survived and stayed.

But she needed to leave. But if she left, she would never see her again.

"Go Natasha." She said, stepping back and turning her back to the hesitant redhead. Her smile never left her face.

Natasha took a deep breath and ran. She ran until her legs were numb. She ran away from where all the most horrible and best memories were made. Until she was sure she was far enough, she spared a last glance.

Y/N wasn't anywhere in sight. It was almost like she was never there. Almost... almost like a dream.

The gala party or whatever it was called for rich people, was quiet. Everyone's movements were calculated to please the higher ups. Small mindless chatter and the two-faced people smiling and sneering filled the room.

Natasha sipped on her champagne glass, making sure she didn't step on her expensive black dress with a green dragon stitched on the side. Her red heels made it hard not to do that.

"Excuse me, Ma'am." The servant said, slyly.

And when Natasha looking up, he saw Clint's blue eyes winking at her.

"Would you like another glass or did you spotted another drink worth your taste?" He asked, innocently.

Did you find him or you need another minute? We need to leave soon.

Natasha smiled. "I already have a glass, but I'll finish it soon and I'll call you when I do." She said. Her eyes trailed after a man wearing a very expensive suit, laughing with a woman on his arm.

I have eyes on the target, I'll get the intel soon.

Clint followed her gaze. "Ah." He nodded.

Natasha finished the champagne and set it down on Clint's little platter before making her way across the ballroom to the target.

He was oblivious on what was about to happen. Natasha walked confidently into his circle of devoted followers and lapdogs. She could feel his eyes scan her body before she quickly began to walk away slowly, making sure she swung her hips an extra length.

"Hello, may I ask the beautiful lady for a name?" He asked, walking up to her.

Natasha smiled. "Hello, the name is Ariana."

He raised his eyebrows. "A pretty girl with a pretty name."

"And you have to be William Princeton." She said, her smile never fading and her voice never wavering.

"Yes." His eyes trailed to her breast. Natasha didn't expect anything less. "The ball is a little noisy, how about we go somewhere... a little less loud?"

Natasha's smile widened, but on the inside she sneered. "Of course."

She followed him. His hand rested on her waist, leading her out of the ballroom and into a abandoned hallway.

When his lips were attached to her neck, she felt for his phone. And sure enough it was in his pocket. He was too preoccupied with kissing her collarbone to notice her slip the phone away and pulling out a small syringe from her bracelet.

She lifted her arm to stab him in the neck but his wrist caught him.

"Ah," he had a smug smirk in his face. Natasha's eyes widened. "That's a very bad girl." He sang.

He raised his arm that had a small knife to aim at her heart. But before he could, there was a loud thump heard and he slumped down on her chest.

Natasha shoved him off and saw the attacker.

The girl on his arm earlier ripped off her wig. Her h/c locks fell down. A small smug smile was on her face.

"Y-Y/N?" Natasha breathed out.

Her red dress hung her her body in all the right curves. She smirked at Natasha before running down the hall.

"Wait!" Natasha ran after her. She noticed his phone in her hand as she darted down the silent hall.

It's been years since she saw her. It's like time had no affect on her, seeing she hasn't aged a bit. Her signature coy smile was burned in her mind.

The red room was cold and empty just as she remembered. Natasha searched the whole area to every nook and cranny. She didn't find who she was looking for.

That was until she stumbled upon the hideout on the roof that she and Y/N always met at.

Y/N's hair as out of the tight ponytail they made them wore. Her locks were healthy and beautiful as they waved in the wind.

"Natasha..." she smiled. "They told me you ran and joined the bad guys." Her back was too her but the side of her face was visible.

"Y/N..." Natasha felt tears poke her eyes.

"Why did you come back." She asked, turning to her.

"I will always come back for you." Natasha admitted, taking a step closer."Are you going to kill me?"

"That's what I'm ordered." She turned away from Natasha, watching the sun rise. "You should've just left and never look back. That's what I would've done."

"I could never do that. I... I love you too much." Natasha walked up next to Y/N. She made sure to be careful around her because she never knew what she could do.

"Natasha, don't do that to yourself." Y/N's voice was bitter and cold.

"I know, you don't love." Natasha smiled a little.

"You're much better off gone before they find you and kill you." Y/N's gaze never wavered as the orange tint of the sun casted upon her face. "Because then, I won't help you."

"They won't catch me. I know this place like the back of my hand." Natasha couldn't stop smiling. She tried to soak up as much of Y/N's presence as she can. Her scent, her aura, her beauty, her voice.

Natasha felt the end of her heels digging into her foot but she didn't stop. She was always the top and the best, she will not lose to Y/N even though she could never hurt or kill her.

Tackling Y/N, she pinned her down to the ground. The h/c haired girl gritted her teeth and threw a punch at the redhead and chucked her off, getting into a fighting stance

"It's better for you to give up." Y/N had a coy smile on her face. "I'm better now."

"So am I." Natasha took off her rings and threw them to the side.

Y/N's smile got wider. "Just like the old times? Bring it."

"I hated you, you know." Y/N said, looking at the trees below them. "You were always the best, the fastest, the smartest and the prettiest."

Natasha watched as she glared at the trees. She swore she saw her blush but that may be the suns rays. She still looked adorable neverless.

"You get on my nerves. Everyone envied and loved you." Y/N picked up a pebble from the many pebbles on the roof floor. She rolled it in her palm.

"Come with me." Natasha stepped closer to her.

Y/N's glare only deepened. "I sometimes fantasized
about killing you in the sparing matches." She continued, ignoring Natasha's offer. "I wanted to see you dead and I wants to punch you and your pretty cheek."

"They are better, you don't have to do anything you don't want to." Natasha reached out of Y/N's hand. Her knuckles were rough from the sparring and her palm was smooth from gripping knives all day.

"And I promised that one day I will be better than you and punch you in the face." Her other fist tightened. "But when you came up to me that one day and offered me water and bandaged my cuts and bruises, you became the epitome of perfect you bitch."

Natasha listened, her voice was full of hate and reminiscence. It was the first time she saw Y/N ever glare that hard.

"You then had the nerve to talk to me, even though clearly I hated you. And then you brought me up the roof and confessed. I should've just told the high ups that you had a weakness and then they could've finished you off but my weak self had to freeze up." Y/N didn't say anything after that. The words seemed to be stuck in her mouth.

"I didn't expect you to accept my confession." Natasha filled in the silence. "I didn't even know why I blurted it out."

"I wanted to know your weakness but I didn't expect it to be so stupid like feelings and love." Y/N laughed, but there was no humor in her laugh.

"How does it feel to know that you are my weakness?" Natasha held both of her hands, smoothing them out of their tight fist.

Y/N's face softened. The orange glow made her the most beautiful she's ever been with a vulnerable look on her face.

"I-I... I don't want to go with you. Not yet." Y/N said, quietly. She sounded soft and fragile. Natasha wanted nothing more than to protect her from the horrors of the Red Room.

"Why not?" Natasha asked. She pulled her closer, looking into her eyes.

Y/N didn't meet her shining emerald green eyes. "I want to pass the test and see what's my score."

"But you'll get sterilized and killed!" Natasha protested.

"I'll survive." Her voice sounded firm. Y/N clutched Natasha's hands. "And then I'll see you again."

"So I see you passed the test." Natasha said as she shoved Y/N off of her.

Y/N held a small knife in her hand with a lethal smile on her face. Her dress was ripped and her hair was messed up. But she still looked like a model as she stood up.

"Yes, and I got the highest score than anyone else." She said, sounding proud. Her smile was smug.

Natasha watched as she ran towards her, her arm unsheathing another knife. She jumped, dodging Y/N's attacks.

But just as she landed, a fist connected with her cheek harshly.

Y/N laughed. "I always wanted to punch your face."

Natasha tackled her, punching her and doing a roundhouse kick before doing a uppercut on her jaw.

Y/N gritted her teeth and threw herself at Natasha, cutting her cheek. The red liquid spilled out from under her skin. Natasha bit her lip, dodging Y/N's other attack.

"Stay still!" Y/N kicked Natasha's stomach, sending her flying back. Her movements were reckless and fast.

Natasha coughed, making Y/N smile. She grabbed Natasha's arm and flung her across the hall.

"You don't deserve this." Natasha waved her arms at the red room building. "You are too good for this."

"No, I'm not." Y/N shook her head. "You are." Her hand cupped Natasha's cheek. She felt herself fall back into Y/N's hypnotic love again. "You are too perfect for this ugly place. But me, I have some things I still need to do here."

She took a deep breath. Her other hand came up to cup her other cheek.

"I won't say this again... but..." She looked like she was about to cry. "I-I love you."

Natasha felt all the emotions she held back come out. Tears spill over her eyes and on to her cheeks.

"Y/N, please... come with me." Natasha wrapped her arms around her waist, pulling her into her tight embrace.

She never wanted to let go, never letting her slip out of her grip and let her fall back into the hellhole and reality they managed to escape for a little while.

"I can't, Natasha." Y/N tried to pulled away but Natasha didn't let go.

"I-I can't leave you here in this hell." Natasha felt her tears slide out of her eyes. They wouldn't stop. "Not when I've come this far, I-I'm honestly scared Y/N, please don't leave me."

Y/N ripped away from her embrace. Natasha stared at her, letting her silent tears fall down her face.

"Natasha, stop." Y/N snapped coldly. "Don't be a weakling and cry."

"W-What if you die?" Natasha felt herself shudder at the thought.

Y/N softened as she watched Natasha shake. Sliding her palms to touch her cheeks and used her thumbs to wipe away her tears. She pulled the trembling redhead close.

"I-I can't lose you" Natasha's voice wavered.

Y/N hushed Natasha, grabbing her face closer to hers. She could smell Y/N's mint breath. Natasha could feel her soft lips touch hers for the first time.

"You should go, Natasha." Y/N whispered.

"Y-Y/N, will you kill me?" Natasha coughed up as she watched Y/N smile and raise a knife above her as she had her pinned down on the ground. "If anyone will kill me, I want that be you."

Y/N froze, staring at Natasha. Her smile disappeared. A heavy silence filled the space around them. Y/N's shocked expression turned into a hard glare.

"What happened to the Natasha I loved?" She asked quietly.

"I thought you died." Natasha's eyes lowered. Her lashes covered her eyes as tears threatened to peek out. "I haven't seen you in 3 years"

"But you promised to be strong, even if I died." Y/N got up. Her movements were rigid. The dropped knife clattered loudly on the marble floor.

Natasha watched Y/N get up. She didn't dare to move off the ground.

"I missed you—" Natasha started.

"You are weak." Y/N spit out.

"Yeah..." Natasha laughed, limping back on the ground. "I guess I am. I do have a weakness after all."

Y/N's rigid posture softened. "Stop." She weakly said.

"You are my weakness, I guess. I could never fight you without letting you win." Natasha laughed, then stop abruptly to cough up blood.

"Stop." Y/N tightened her fist. "Stop."

"I love you." Natasha murmured.

"I-I..." Y/N voice faltered. Then a loud groan erupted from her mouth as she kicked the cracked glass she broke by missing Natasha earlier and stabbing the windows instead.

"Come with me." Natasha got up, her leg limped on one side. "You don't deserve the Red Room."

"You out of all people should know I do. I'm not perfect and good like you are." She said, quietly. "I deserve all punishment they give me."

"But you could be good. You already did the prefect part." Natasha limped closer to Y/N. "You already caused so much damage, you don't need punishment, you need redemption."

"Natasha..." Y/N stared at the ground. "They won't accept me, not with someone with so many people checked off their hit list like me."

"Everyone gets a second chance, Clint showed me that." Natasha brushed her hand against Y/N's.

"Who's Clint? Your boyfriend?" Y/N sneered, raising a eyebrow.

Natasha raised her own eyebrow at Y/N's sudden change of attitude.

"No? Why? Are you jealous?" Natasha poked Y/N's cheek. But Y/N's eyes flashed a dangerous look.

"No." She huffed.

"Come." Natasha, wrapped her arms around around Y/N's waist. "We can be like this all the time and you can have redemption."

Y/N grabbed a pebble and threw it against the laser-guarded fence. The alarms went off immediately after that.

"Y/N! Why did you do that?!" Natasha's eyes widened.

"You need to leave, Natasha." Y/N said, seriously. "I don't deserve what you have, and I have unfinished business."

Natasha stared at Y/N. "I can't! Not without you."

"You have to go, before they catch you." She glanced at the fences. "The pebbles should stop the lasers for a couple minutes, you need to escape while you can."

"I-I—" Natasha couldn't just leave.

"Go." Y/N smiled, softly.

"I-I'll be back." She promised. "Promise me that you will come with me when I see you next time."

Y/N didn't answer for a while. She wasn't planning to leave any time soon and Natasha could sense it. But maybe in the future, they will finally have some peace of mind and be together and happy for once.

"Promise me."

"I promise."

"We could be at peace and don't have to be on alert 24/7." Natasha pulled her hands closer to her. "Time could stay still like we always wished and we could be happy."

"That's sounds too good to be true." Y/N muttered. "I don't believe I deserve heaven like you say yet you say I do belong there with you."

"It's true though." Natasha insisted.

"Promise me."

"I promise."
