Chapter Three
Chapter Three
“Where the hell have you been?”
“Dude, calm down.”
“You do not have the authority to say that to me missy.”
“It’s not like I died or anything.”
“Well, you very well could have! How the hell was I supposed to know?”
“I left you a text, Bay.”
“Yeah, but you could have sent that before something bad happened to you! Phone calls are more valid.”
“I could’ve died after the phone call though. Think of that?”
“You are so infuriating.”
“You love me anyways.”
“Not anymore I don’t.”
I rolled my eyes as I shifted the phone to my other ear. “As if.”
I heard her grumble from the other side of the line.
Baylene. Been friends since third grade, been the mighty duo since sixth. My sister from another mister, as some would say. However, she tends to act like my mother when I end up in hospitals. I would think she would be used to it by now, but no.
“Honestly though,” Baylene finally says, the line crackling slightly between us. “I really wish you could give me a better heads up next time.”
I raise an eyebrow, even though she couldn’t see it. “What do you want me to say? Hey Baylene, just lost an arm. Don’t worry, I’m getting a fake hand soon that’ll make me feel like a life-sized Barbie but I’ll deal?”
“That’s a terrible thing to say.”
I shrugged, grabbing the apple juice off my dresser that Becky got me and took a sip out of the plastic straw. I smack my lips. “This is why I don’t tell you these things.”
“I just wanna know you’re okay Julie, is that too much to ask?”
I glanced briefly at the door as Aiden strolled in, who gave me a glare. He was still mad at me from yesterday. “Well, why don’t you just come visit and see how okay I am?” I said to her as I examined my fingernails.
From the corner of my eye, I saw Aiden’s head snap in my direction. “She is not coming here.”
“I don’t know Jules,” Baylene said, letting out a sigh.
I smirked, my eyes still on Aiden. “I have a roommate who is dying to meet you.”
“Oh?”
“Julie.” Aiden said, narrowing his eyes. “Don’t.”
“His name’s Aiden.” I said to Baylene, ignoring him.
“Oh.” She drawled, before she said “On a scale?”
Aiden scowled at me, throwing his hands in the air and cursing profoundly as he wandered around the room.
“I’d say a nine.” I paused before I added, “Around a six personality wise though.”
Aiden spun around and gave me a funny look. I grinned innocently.
“Well, that changes everything then.” Baylene said. “I’ll be there first thing tomorrow. Or later this afternoon, depends on how desperate I am.”
“You’re always desperate.”
“Watch it.”
I smirk, falling back into the pillows of my bed. “You said it, not me.”
“I’m hanging up.”
I rolled my eyes. “Love you too, Bay.”
I clicked my phone off, shoving the device into my back pocket before directing my attention to an annoyed Aiden, wearing his most famous expression. “My friend is gonna show up within the next forty-eight hours.”
“Great, thanks. Just go ahead and disregard the rules of my home.”
“Technically, its not your home. It’s a hospital.”
“My room. My rules.”
“Oh C’mon, don’t be so melodramatic.” I grabbed the crutches off the floor, standing up cautiously. “You’ll love her.”
“If she is anything like you, then probably not.”
I gasped placing a hand to my chest. “Really? Aw, Aiden. I think that’s the nicest thing you have ever said to me.”
I propel myself towards the door on my crutches, stalling in the doorframe as I turned around and gestured forwards with my head. “C’mon Mr. Grumpy Pants. You need a good dose of fun.”
He rose and eyebrow, and started to walk forward. “I’m not going anywhere with you.”
“Looks like you are, but that’s fine.” I shrug. “I could be wrong.”
Aiden rolled his eyes. “As long as you get in trouble and get kicked out of my room for being a bad influence, then its fine by me.”
“Are you kidding?” I smirked. “I’m a great influence.”
“Yuh-huh.”
I peered down the hall, making sure no staff was about. Once it was clear, I took a step into the hall. “Keep up, we have to be stealthy.”
“On crutches?”
I ignored him, quickening my pace towards the elevator and pressing the upward arrow button. A moment later it dinged, and the sliding doors opened effortlessly. We entered the lift quietly as possible and I pressed the top floor.
The lift did a little jolt, and then rode up the rails smoothly, carrying us towards the top. I hummed a song to myself, earning a glare from Aiden.
Oops, Taylor again.
The doors then opened, and we quickly exited. I checked up and down both sides of the hall before I spotted what I was looking for. I grinned.
“Ah! My steed awaits!” I seized the metal contraption, pushing a similar one in Aiden’s direction. “Roommate, let me introduce you to my favorite pass time here at the hospital; Wheelchair Racing.”
