--------------

My phone buzzed just as Manik left the room, leaving me alone with his lame best friends.

Manik: *Uss gadhe ki baat mat manna. Pagal hai voh.*

I smiled as I locked the screen and found Cabir leaning against the wall, with a sarcastically straight face that got me giggling.

"Well, all sorted now?" He said with a smirk as he stopped me from moving and I shot a small smile.

"Yeah, we're okay. Thanks." I spoke with a grateful smile.

"Ahem... So what about my reward?" I cringed in confusion.

"What reward do you want?" He began to think and I stood there, tapping my feet.

"Actually, nah. You're like my sister, so chuck it." He said with a smirk as he flapped his hand.

"Hehe... Vaise ek question puchu? As a sister?" He stood straight and slid his hands into his pockets.

"Pucho."

"Tum kisise pyaar karte ho?" Cabir's eyes widened and he looked at me in awe, like with an 'are-you-serious' expression.

"Kiya. Ab nahi. Pyaar main phasna bhi nahi chahta. Single rehna kitna acchha lagta hai." Cabir popped shades on and tried to sound cool and yet, cocky even.

"Sacchha pyaar usse zyada acchha lagta hai." I stated proudly and walked over to our room.

"Wow! Like husband, like wife. Pyaar ka asar. Matlab bas shaadi karlo, aur love life settled." He spat sarcastically and flapped his hand in the air to express his hopelessness.

***

"Manik, this is not fair." I complained as Manik tossed the sheets of our bed off and began bundling them up. "Manik! Main tumse baat nahi karungi." I crossed my arms and huffed. I turned my face to the side and he shot a glance at me. I knew I had his attention and that meant I would just become over-dramatic to have my ways.

"Arre, bas ek din ki baat hai na? Rehne do." He shrugged and began to act like a gentleman; that attitude was applicable to everyone except me. It was only with me that he would act as immature and silly as he ever could and why not? Aren't you yourself with the ones you love?

"I can't. Aise kaise kar sakte hai? Amma aise kaise guests ko yahan bula sakti hai." I growled and frowned and scowled and whined but nothing seemed to do the trick. As such, I wanted Manik to give me more attention and in instances like this, I was even deprived of that.

"Nandu yaar, tum shuru mat hojana. There isn't place there na, that's why she offered them to stay here. It's just for a day, Nandini." He tried explaining but I was constantly troubling him by pulling his shirt sometimes or sometimes falling on him, hitting him incessantly.

"Tum bhi Amma ko hi support kar rahe ho. Humare baare main nahi sochoge? Fine. Main tumse baat nahi karungi, Manik. Jao tum." I jerked my head negatively as I crossed my arms again and I felt two strong arms wrap around me, holding me tightly. He towered my body, and given his height, he could clearly face downwards directly and he could see me. That's just how small I was compared to him. He leaned forward to look into my eyes.

"Kahan jaaun main? Huh? Tumhare bina kahan jaaunga?" He whispered into my ear and I pushed myself into him, but struggled out of his arms at the same time. I was contradicting myself but again, that's how I was with Manik.

"Choddo. I'm not talking to you." I scowled and he smirked as he felt my body press closer against his chest. I heard a loud yelp and I jumped in shock.

"Ahh..." He cried and hopped on one leg, trying to hold the supposedly injured one in one of his hands. However, given his height, it wasn't that simple. I jumped for the rescue and kneeled down on the floor, holding his foot in my hands.

"Kya hua? Dikhao, Manik. Kuch bolo? Teek ho?" I ranted without observing his reaction, as I tried to figure out what was paining him. After finding nothing, I looked up at him to see a sly smile plastered on his face.

"Karli na baat? Hmm?" He challenged me and I stood up in defeat. I'd flushed at his sudden comeback and was embarrassed for reacting that way, knowing Manik and his cheap tricks to fool me.

"Fine." I pouted angrily and stamped his foot quite hardly and he pulled me into him, wrapping his arms around me, after hissing in pain.

"Sss... Meri jungli billi... Vaise bhi darr nahi lagta mere saath akele rehkar?" He spoke with a cheeky smile into my ears, as he played with my hair and a small smile appeared on my face too. It's cute when your man calls you lame names. It's annoying, but cute.

"Nah." I shrugged in disregard and he grabbed me tighter, swaying his body from side to side, lifting alternate legs as required, to close in against me.

"Kyun? Hona chahiye." He whispered and I flinched.

"You're useless. You're not even scary. You can't even do anything." I smirked as I shot those sentences and saw Manik's jaw drop. It's a tendency of every man to get defensive or even violent when his male ego is questioned.

"Oh really?" He threatened as he gripped me tighter, trying to exercise his power on me.

"Yes. Now let me clean the house. See the mess you've made." I nudged him away with both my elbows and he pressed his lips tight in annoyance.

"Yeah, right. Mrs. Malhotra, should I remind you, about last night?" He raised his eyebrows and commented in a challenging tone and I heaved a huge sigh.

"I don't have time for your baseless talk. I have lots of work to do. If you are helping me, well and good. Or else, I'll do it on my own." I began walking away, towards the kitchen and began moping the mess up.

"Nahi, chalo. We'll do it together." He said with a warm smile and wrapping his arm around my waist, pulled me closer to him.

"Sure? Can I believe you?" I gloomed at him and he looked genuinely upset.

"You don't?" His facial muscles cringed sadly and I grabbed his shirt and pulled him to stay.

"I do." I muttered against his lips and stood on my tiptoes, turning to his side to give him a kiss on his cheek. His hands supported my body in place as I tried hard to reach him. I withdrew, after pressing a moist imprint onto his left cheek. His lips molded into a cute smile.

"Chalo phir. Let's go to the store. We need to get some stuff." He grabbed my hand like a toddler who wanted to show his parents the toy he wanted, and began to pull me along.

"And... Umm... We have to..." I stopped and spoke in broken sentences, hoping he'd get the idea.

"Huh?"

"Never mind." I shrugged again and led the way. I felt a pull on my arm and I turned in my path, and stopped.

"Kya bol rahi ho?"

"Don't you think we need something?" I asked in a questioning tone.

"What is that 'something'?" He drew inverted commas in the air to stress on that word and I looked at him in despair.

"Are you serious?" I took a deep breath to stop myself from cursing him. That attitude of his annoyed me. The fact that he was so careless sometimes, made me angry.

"Duh? Of course." He rolled his eyes at me.

"Condoms...?" I said in a 'as-a-matter-of-fact' tone and his expressions changed in realization.

"Oh." He shaped his lips to form a pout and bit his lip in embarrassment. He rubbed the nape of his neck awkwardly and I let out a small giggle. He looked so funny and cute, more so because I never saw him embarrassed. "Umm..."

"I hope your intention is not to make me pregnant and then drop out of college and ruin my career, is it?" I said, with a light chuckle and he turned red in embarrassment. He grabbed my arms in defense, pushed them behind me and slowly directed me towards the wall.

"Manik..." I called out to bring him out of the trance, for I knew, if we began now, it'd be too late for us to clean the place before the guests come. However, Manik paid no heed. He pinned me to the wall and hovered over me.

"Maybe it is..." He whispered as he slowly claimed my lips, unable to resist further and I fought against his grip, pulling my hands out and slowly tracing them along his chest, to rest my wrists just behind his shoulder.

***

We bought a bunch of random stuff and Manik made sure, he never let go of me, even for a minute. His hands were lingering on my shoulder, on my waist and where not. We'd just come across the adult section and Manik and I were making the situation more awkward than it already was.

"Okay... Umm... So do you go for it or do I?" He said, clumsily putting his hands into his pockets.

"Manik, what kind of a stupid question is this, you have to go. Chee. Which girl will go there?" I nudged him angrily and pointed to that section really weirdly. Thinking about it now, makes me laugh so hard, but at 19, it wasn't such an easy thing to do.

"Responsible women will." He stated confidently and I hit him, gritting my teeth and cursing him.

"Haaww... So I'm not responsible?" I groaned in dismay and he smirked seeing me all distressed and challenged.

"Nope." He stuck his head up higher, to prove his superiority and he smiled really cutely, that made me melt. I just pushed him and he hit a shelf.

"Idiot. Main nahi jaaungi. I'll have to get something else." I flushed at his expectations and accusations for me to go get them.

"Kyun nahi? Do you realize that in order for YOU to not be in trouble, I need to do this? How is it even fair?" He whined and I pressed my growing creepy smile.

"You should be selfless in love." I commented with pride clear in my tone, though I wasn't proud of anything. Besides, what is there in this to be happy about? Except for the fact that Manik was getting owned.

"Selfish, you mean? That's love. Being selfish is love. Not selfless. Selfish and selfless are opposites and love and hate are; so that means..." Manik began deriving deranged conclusions and I flushed into a deep shade of red.

"Okay, enough. Get these and come. I'll be back." I hit his bicep as I headed towards the sanitary section and Manik pulled me by my arm.

"Where are you going? What do you need?" He asked with concern in his voice. I rolled my tongue around my mouth, pushing it against my cheek.

"Umm... Girl stuff." I said, without making eye contact with him.

"Ahem... So you can buy those 'girl things' but you can't buy these?" He teased and I frowned but almost immediately, came back with a comeback.

"Because those 'girl things' are for me. It makes sense for ME to be buying all that. Those things are for you. You have to go get them." I pushed him and tried to escape but then he shot a lame comment.

"Stereotyped, much?" I stopped in my way and turned to face him with that angry, weird scowl I usually put up when I'm displeased.

"What?" He smirked as an idea flicked in his head.

"Let's do this. I'll go there. You get condoms." He winked at his brilliant idea and I gaped.

"What? No. I don't even know your size and..." I broke eye-contact, embarrassed at the words slipping out.

"Come on Nandini, you have even taken..." He was about to drop a few perverted words and I tugged his shirt to stop, shyly looking away.

"Okay, stop right there. These are least important now. I'll go get the necessary supplies." I blushed and he pulled me again, playing with my hair.

"Oh, so this ain't necessary now? So you're fine with... having our baby matlab... Wow! Itni jaldi, Nandu?" He teased and I inevitably smiled as he pulled me closer and whispered seductively into my ear.

"Manik, sab dekh rahe hai. Manik..." I stretched and struggled to get out and he giggled.

"Embarrassed, are we?" He murmured into my ear and I trembled. I locked eyes with him and he smiled slyly. "You are buying it for us. Husband ke baare main itna toh jaan lo. Sizes likhe honge shayad. Dekh lena." He spoke and let go.

"Manik, please." I tried my cute ways to have him behave the way I wanted and perhaps, he became a little considerate about it.

"Large. Get whatever you like. Aur tumhara?" He nudged and I closed my eyes in awkwardness.

"Manik! Main hi le lungi." I hit him and smiled to myself.

"Arre... bolo na? Agar mujhse bol sakti ho, 'Manik, I'm down' toh yeh bhi boldo? Sharma kyun rahi ho? Vaise, you know, I didn't know you call that, down." He winked and I pushed my tongue against my cheek, to hide my embarrassment.

"Pagal. Regular." I hit his head playfully and after a smile, he headed towards the ladies' section. This man, I tell you, will be the death of me, in all senses.

I stepped into the section to find like probably 73184 different brands and types. It was like I was lost in a huge supermarket, surrounded with random things; only here, they were embarrassing things and it was a smaller section. I hunted for the large size and narrowed down to about 22 options. Let me tell you, in my entire life, nothing has been more difficult and embarrassing than those 7 minutes I spent in that aisle. All weird stuff, flavored condoms, strong latex condoms, extra-protected condoms, spotted condoms, condoms with weird thingies on them, everything was in that aisle. What I found the most useless was some glow-in-the-dark condom. Like who the hell uses that shit and why do people sell such things? Gosh!

After a lot of searching and awkwardly dropping and secret reading, I narrowed down to two options and picked both, just in case. When it comes to protection, it's never enough for the two of us.

On the other hand, Manik was equally suffering. To his bad luck, there were two ladies in the aisle too, that made the entire situation worse. However, he confidently stood there and glanced at all the available products for probably a good whole minute. The women gave him proud glances and he gave them a pressed smile, assuming they were judging him. Like, see, that's the thing about women. We like it when guys do such things for us. It makes us feel like they respect us enough to get these things for us and not laugh it off; and the fact that Manik was that ideal man, made me feel much more comfortable and loved.

He had almost the same issues, narrowing down to a few options out of the millions stashed there. He grabbed all of them and headed to the cash counter.

Manik and I were face-to-face at two different counters, with him having all the food and my sanitary products and I, having all the household goods and of course, condoms. Manik raised his eyebrows in challenge as he shoved his basket on the conveyor belt, giving me a glance of the stash of products he'd got. It was pretty embarrassing, given he went to a female cashier with sanitary products on the top of his basket, plus the amount he'd bought, probably would last like 5 cycles. The lady gave him a surprising look and he smiled awkwardly, after sending me a text to escape the situation.

Manik:*Just text me until this lady's done. Okay?*

I glanced at him and chuckled to myself. He was trapped in his own trap.

Nandini: *Kyun? Embarrassed, are we? Tumhara idea hi tha na?* 😏

I saw him restlessly tapping his feet to get it over with quickly.

Manik: *Yaar... Nandini!*

Nandini: *Awww... babyyyy...*

I saw him smile and it reflected on my face too. He was such a cutie sometimes. Nah, strike that word off. Always.

Manik: *Mamaaaa...*

I scowled and locked my screen. Just then, his cashier was done and a bill was handed to him. He grabbed the shopping bag and winked at me, in victory. I rolled my eyes and waited for my turn.

***
Part-2:
Stupid Manik. Like what the hell? Which husband calls his wife, his mother? The most senseless creature on the planet. Disgusting. Do not talk to him. Nandini, anyways you know, whatever you do, eventually you'll go back to him. No no. Not this time. Uh, come on. Yeah, whatever.

The cashier probably just ignored the items and almost ever so ignorantly, she scanned the items and produced the bill as I paid the amount. I walked out but even before I could, Manik grabbed the bag from me.

"I'll do it. You don't have to carry these." He smiled and I ignored him. I didn't know how long I could ignore him; and certainly I couldn't for long, but I still just did, to prove myself, maybe?

"Kya? Baat nahi karogi?" He nudged my elbow and I jumped in disgust, still ensuring that I was ignoring him. He frowned.

"Nandini..." He touched me again and I refused to acknowledge his presence. I tried to open the door of the car and just then, Manik locked it. I clenched the door handle a couple of times, quite roughly, given I was clearly pissed at his act; and gave up. I walked over to get a different vehicle and that was it for Manik. He slammed his hand right next to me, captivating me under his stern body.

"Talk to me." He demanded and I huffed. His attitude though, was something I hated. Sensing my arrogance, he tamed himself down. "Tell me what's wrong. I feel so lonely when you don't talk to me. You're the only one I have now and..." He began to shoot out his vulnerabilities and pain and probably, because I loved him, I gave in.

"But main toh teri Mama lagti hu, na?" I snapped and he cringed.

"Huh?" I turned to face him and raised my eyebrows in doubt. He made a sarcastic expression. "What?" He opened his mouth momentarily, to say something but instantly thought against it. He lightly giggled as he spoke the next words.  "Nandini, that was a joke, okay? I mean, in a few years I'll have to address you that way so..." He flapped in the air, in a 'as-a-matter-of-fact' tone.

"Kyun?" I scowled again and he huffed impatiently.

"Kyun matlab? Humare bacchhe ke saamne tumhe Nandini thodi na bulaunga. I'll call you Mom, Amma or whatever our baby decides to call you." He smiled a cheeky smile and I curled my lips into a kind of a cute-less pout. If that was a word.

"That's lame though. From now, I'll call you Bhaiyya. You're my brother's brother-in-law na?" I giggled and spoke in a stern tone and his face changed.

"What?" He almost spat in a disgusted tone.

"Kya? Main teri Mama hun toh tum mere bhaiyya ho." I chuckled at my lame conclusions.

"What? Nandini, you know that's not possible." He shook his head, horrified by my names for him. "No. No. Come on, Nandini. You can't brother-zone your husband. I have a valid point here. See. You want our baby to call you, Nandini? I don't like that." He made really cute frightened faces and a smile molded my lips. He reciprocated and leaned into my seat, unbuckling his seat belt. He seductively ran his hands along my thigh, tracing over my legs, my waist, upwards, almost touching my chest and I grabbed his hand.

I shook my head in almost a plead and his fingers brushed my cheeks carefully, cupping them. He tilted my face to guide him and I shut my eyes closed. His lips just touched mine and my phone rang. Manik was still in the trance, hoping I'll cut the call but I stumbled and pushed him away.

"Ugh... Tumhare friends ki problem kya hai?" He groaned in distress. It always annoyed him when someone obstructed him from doing what he wanted.

"Gussa mat karo 'Bhaiyya'..." I squeaked and he rolled his eyes.

"Ugh, Nandini, cut it dude." I giggled and picked the phone.

"Haan Navya..." Manik clutched his hair in annoyance and gave me a pathetic look.
---
"Haan aa rahe hai ab." I tossed his hand away, that was drawing circles on my arm. I hit him and cringed to signal him to shut up.
---
"Okay, thanks." I nudged him away and he frowned.
---
"In 10 minutes. Bye." I cut the call and look at Manik in a rather upset way.

"Manik, sab aa rahe hai." I freaked and he leaned back into me.

"Let's finish what we started na? Vaise we have supplies... if you know what I mean." He glanced at the bag and I gaped. I hit him and blushed.

"Chee Manik. In the car? Eeks. Gross!" I made disgusted faces and he grabbed my waist in both his hands. Yeah, I was so petite, he handled me like a baby sometimes.

"Yeahhh... in the car... You know, it's one of my fantasies, to have sex in a car." He dramatized his face and smiled wide in a rather lusty manner and I hit him playfully.

"What? Ew. Why?" He grimaced and sighed helplessly.

"What's 'ew' in that? It's fun." He gave me a sarcastic expression and I bartered with a similar expression.

"Like you have experience." I choked a caustic remark that got him giving me the eye.

"What do you mean by that? I don't give you good sex? Do I have to remind you, 'Manik... please, I can't anymore. Manik!'..." I shot daggers at him as he mimicked my words in a ugly and rather animated tone. Ew. I don't speak like that. "Yeh sab kya hai?"

"Oh hello, main aise baat nahi karti, haan?" I crossed my arms against my chest and shrugged indifferently, expressing, probably, doubt. He grabbed my hands, jumped out of his seat, onto mine with his knees on both sides of my body.

"Come on na, Nandu? After this for two ENTIRE days, no physical contact. Samjho na?" He whined and with a smirk, I pulled him by his shirt, making our chests collide.

"Koi dekh lega toh?" I spoke with glistening innocent eyes. That was who I was, bold yet innocent, that kept him captivated. I twirled his shirt button around my pointer finger as I gawked at him, locking our gazes. He found that seductive even, being bold and innocent at the same time.

"Okay, we'll go to the next lane. Probably secluded." He grinned shamelessly and I gave him a thwack playfully.

"Manik, I never knew you were this desperate. Not bad, haan?" I simpered and he grumbled to himself.

"It's just that I'm open about my feelings and desires. Not like some people, who act innocent but do really bold things in the bedroom." He shot a wink and my jaw dropped. One shameless creature he was.

"Manik!" I slapped him incessantly, falling into his arms laughing.

***

"Yeh Nandini kahan reh gayi ab? Aunty, I'm very sorry. Agar mere paas chaabi hoti toh main khula deti par..." Navya hyperventilated as the aunties glared at their watches, and glanced at the elevator, to see if we were coming.

"Aati hogi voh." One of them snapped and Navya was stuck in between them, just for me. I grabbed the bags and ran, but Manik stopped me and picked them himself, handing the bag of personal commodities to me. It was already late and the elevator was on level 11. I slammed the button and began running a marathon on the staircase. However, as soon as Manik spotted me, he shouted so loud, the entire apartment could hear.

"Nandini, araamse. Bhaag kyun rahi ho? Nahi, agar aise jaogi na, toh tum yahin rukna mere saath." He grabbed my arm and held me in place. I have him a death stare and slowly attempted to loosen his grip on me.

"Manik, you know you're not making sense." I grit my teeth, clearly annoyed.

"Arre chaabi hai mere paas, main dekhlunga na?" He gave a cold look and I stopped in my steps. He ran up the stairs with the heavy bags and I kinda felt pity for him. "Sorry Auntyji, voh hum traffic mein phass gaye the. Maaf kijiyega." He spoke with a cute smile and whoosh, the aunties were swept off their feet. After all, who could resist his charm? He had everyone's attention, be it kids or older adults.

"Rehne do beta, hum abhi-abhi aaye hai." Manik unlocked the door and welcomed them, placing the bags in our room. He quickly ran back to adjust the couch for them. I heard an aunty say some words as I climbed the stairs, exhausted. "Kitna acchha pati mila hai Nandini ka!"

I panted and browsed at Navya to see her fisting her hands tight and gritting her teeth. She leaned into me as she whispered.

"I was trying to call you from that time. Why didn't you pick? Aur yeh kya hai?" She tugged at the bag I was holding, attempting to get a peek but I pulled away uncomfortably.

"Voh bas... thoda kaam tha aur phone sile..." Even before I could complete, I heard an aunty call out for me.

"Chalo Nandu, khaana milega kya?" She shot a smile at me and I nodded as I paced into the house quickly, stashing the products into the nearest, Manik's, cupboard.

"Haanji, baithiye. Abhi laayi." I adjusted my dress and brushed my hair with my fingers, knotting it into a bun. I turned back and Manik signaled if I needed help. The aunties glanced at the two of us and I shook my head nervously.

"Manik beta, aao. Hume aapse baat karni hai." An aunty grabbed his hand and pulled him towards her and I fumed. This is what I disliked. I was their blood relative, but no. Manik is more important. He smiled slyly at me and acted coy.

"Ji. Boliye." He made an innocent expression as he sat next to one of them. I pressed my lips, almost disgusted, as I slammed a dish onto the counter top. I turned the stove on and placed the vessel over it. I stealthily turned to him to see the aunty's hand over his cheek, caressing it. I glared at him for not even reacting and he looked at me from the corner of his eyes and shot a smile.

"Kaisa chal raha hai college? Suna tha ki..."

"Ouch!" I screamed and I had all his attention. I jumped and fanned my hand and Manik ran to check on me.

"Main abhi aata hu." He spoke as he hopped over the couch and pounced on me. "Kya hua? Jala di phirse? Sambhalke nahi reh sakti na tum?" He shouted at me and I stared at that one spot where her hand lingered. I raised my hand to touch his cheek and the trance was broken.

"Humari Nandu bahut lucky hai." An aunty said and I broke eye-contact with him. In a trance, his fingers brushed against my bruised skin and I whimpered. He instantly examined my hand and blew on it. The aunties looked at us admiringly and Navya did her best to divert the attention. After all, she knew I hated public displays.

"Haanji Aunty. Aapko kuch chahiye? Paani?" They nodded and she slipped into the kitchen.

"Manik, tum jao. Sab dekh rahe hai." Manik flinched almost immediately at the fact that he had to attend to some lame guests while I was hurt.

"Arre dekhne do na? Mujhe kya? Can't you see? She's hurt. Dhang se khaana bhi nahi aati isse. Bol raha hu, help kardunga but maanegi, tab na?" He scolded loud enough for them to hear and they smiled while I irked out.

"Manik, they know Hindi. English, please?" I murmured.

"Whatever. She is more important, okay?" Navya nodded frightened and filled the glasses for them; rushing out of the vicinity. "Teek ho?" I nodded slowly as I glanced at his cheek.

"She touched you, na? Here, na?" I brushed gently and placed his hand over my hand.

"Nandini, come on... they were just being affectionate. Tum bhi rakhlo apna haath." He rubbed his face against my hand and I withdrew.

"No, Manik. Koi aur kaise touch kar sakta hai tumhe? If at all anyone but me, it'll be our baby, that too, only because he'll be a part of me also. Bas. Nobody else." I tilted with head with a jerk, to prove my point and he coughed.

"Ahem." I flushed and hid my face in him stealthily, in a rather more secretive way and he had a look at my wound again. "Lemme dress this wound up, yeah?" I nodded obediently and I was pulled to the sink, to wash it.
