Chapter{9}
Engagement is the official ceremony, wherein, the bride and groom exchange the rings. Before the engagement ceremony starts, Kurmai ceremony takes place for the groom. The Sikh priest offers a short prayer, and the family of the bride offers a kara to the groom. Along with the kara (steel bangle), the groom is also given a kirpan (a small knife that is a reminder of their heroic heritage), kangha (a small wooden comb that Sikhs are supposed to carry in their hair under their turban all the time) and a sundar gutka (which is a holy book that contains daily prayers of Sikhs). Then a red scarf is placed around the neck of the groom and dried dates are placed in the groom's hand.
Manpreet stood infront of mirror trying to tie the turban.
"From where did you learn tying turban miss ?" Manpreet stood amused.
"You Tube" Mahira grinned.
"And why so miss Mahira?" Manpreet asked making Mahira blush.
"For future" Mahira spoke slyly.
"Future for what ? To be Mrs.Singh " Manpreet remarked as Mahira smiled ear to ear.
"Let me tie it" Ginny spoke from behind breaking the reverie of past that Manpreet remembered.
"Don't dare touch it" Manpreet warned.
"I will touch it and I will touch you too" Ginny spoke kissing Manpreet's nape swiftly.
"Motherfucker, how dare you!" Manpreet shouted grabbing her neck .
"Mummy ji!" Ginny wailed loudly.
"What happened?" Siroj replied Climbing the stair towards Manpreet's room making Manpreet loose his grip.
"I couldn't find my earning" Ginny lied to Siroj.
Soon the house got filled with relatives, the courtyard with a red tent blocking the sun's harsh rays.
"Doesn't he look like a princess in that sherwani?" Ginny spoke to her friends from London.
"His beard makes him damn hot" spoke a blue eyed British friend of Ginny.
Manu overhead the conversation and knitted his brows.
"What are you staring at Huh? " Manpreet spoke as he laid next to Mahira.
"Hmm..what makes you look hot? I am thinking about this" Mahira played with the nook of her dupatta (scarf cloth ).
"Mhmm...probably my eyes or something else" Manpreet smirked.
"Something else like what ?" Mahira spoke out to make Manpreet red faced.
"Hmm...my beard" Manpreet made a sentence to divert the question.
"Ohh beard..." Mahira pecked his cheek.
"Should I trim it lesser denser ?" Manpreet wondered.
"No, don't dare to touch it. I love your beard" Mahira yelled.
"Hmm...so you it denser Hmm....deeper mhmmm" Manpreet joked.
"Shut up Manu" Mahira give to light punches at his shoulder.
"So how do like it?" Manpreet hovered on top of her.
"We have a life time to explore " Mahira replied.
"Can't wait for our Kurmai " Manpreet smiled like a teen boy.
"Ohho look at Manu , he can't wait for Kurmai" Nimmi mausi (Manpreet's maternal aunt ) commented bringing Manpreet back to reality.
A spree of tears brimmed in his eyes as he missed Mahira.
"Look Oh how emotional the groom is " a neighborhood woman pointed out.
"Excuse me" Manpreet made this way out.
He looked for his mobile and found it lying it broken at one corner of the room.
"Shit how the fuck it broke" Manpreet shouted taking out the sim.
He pulled out the Sim and looked for a Device .
"Here use my extra android" Ginny spoke out.
He took it desparately and opened his whatsapp.
"Hey Mahira , we need to sort this" He texted .
The message didn't deliver .
"I think she blocked you" Ginny spoke with a fake sigh.
"No! Bitch shut up" Manpreet groaned.
"Then okay...I give you one chance. Go bring her here or else get ready for Kurmai ceremony" Ginny spoke calmly.
Manpreet grabbed his bullet bike and didn't bother if it looked odd to be all dressed up in fancy and riding a bike.
"Mahira!" Manpreet shouted.
"Who are you !" Shamshed came to the main door.
"Uncle ji, I am Mahira's friend . I need to talk to her urgently" Manpreet spoke out anxiously.
"Mahira , someone wants to meet" Shamshed spoke .
From inside came Mahira wearing a pale pink suit ,Manpreet's breath caught seeing her natural beauty.
"Huh?what happened Abba? Who is he?" Mahira spoke in a monotone.
"You don't know him?" Shamshed asked.
"I think ,he is looking for other Mahira . We had another Mahira in class" Mahira replied.
Shamshed left saying,"Beta ji come and have water at least . We don't let leave guests without having something ".
"Why are you here!" Mahira fummed as her father went inside.
"Why did you block me Mahira ? I was just looking for a way out " Manpreet spoke.
"Way out ! Yes using me and then throwing me out. You can't speak or stand up for me against Beeji " Mahira spoke angrily.
"Shut up" Manpreet shouted.
"Fuck off" Mahira groaned tears leaving her eyes.
"What the hell! Mahira speak sense ! We still can get married don't let ego run in "Manpreet pleaded.
"I am engaged " Mahira showed her finger with the solitaire.
"What !No Mahi ? What are you saying?" Manpreet broke down.
"I now belong to Ayaan" Mahira spoke coldly and turned hiding her tears.

Manpreet picked his bike drove back to his house and sat on the sofa set for the ceremony.
Ginny's father gave a kara, tiny beautiful kirpan, a comb .
The photographer spoke," Bhai ji smile please " the experienced man spoke as he noticed yet another groom to be with a fallen face .
Manpreet forced a smile on his face although his heart bled giving an ache that stabbed through ribs and reached his gut.
The pain wasn't physical it was something connected to his emotions and soul.
Ginny's father dropped dates in his hand and a red scarf around his neck .
The crowd in front cheered on while the voices didn't reach Manpreet's ear which felt like some vacuum closed them.
"Mera Puttar, jinda reh" Navneet blessed Manpreet her only grandson and spiraled a few notes of 2000 to be given as a charity to ward off the evil eye on the groom to be.
"Ye toh kismat si( This is Destiny )" Saroj spoke out in Manpreet's ear and hugged him.
Manpreet broke down in the arms of his mother like a little boy .
Saroj knew something wasn't alright but all she could do was to comfort her son in her embrace .
