| ii. THE ACHERON CONFIGURATION
Harrowing was a tradition at The Academy of unseen arts, so it wasn't strange when the weird sisters started to pick up at Sabrina Spellman. However their harrowing was way worse than they did to the other students. It's like they had something special prepared for Sabrina. Victoria knew the reason why. She had worse treatment, because she was half-witch and her father wedded a mortal. And Prudence really didn't like the idea of a half-mortal studying in the academy for witches.
Victoria was in her room working on some witch history homework, which was pretty interesting for the girl. Suddenly Sabrina ran inside out of breath. She was going through harrowing events and even after a talk with Father Blackwood, the weird sisters didn't stop.
Sabrina pulled Victoria towards a telephone booth in the academy. The space was too small and uncomfortable for two people. The girl obeyed and leaned her back against the glass, glaring at the blonde. She furrowed her eyebrows, waiting for explanation, but instead she was met with silence.
"...I need your and Aunt Zelda's help." She spoke into the phone as Victoria stood right next to her, listening to their conversation. "Children are dying at the academy, Aunt Zee, and no one is doing anything to stop it."
"Dying? Dying how?" Zelda asked.
"Students have been harrowed to death by other students and the weird sisters are harrowing me." Sabrina informed and the girl's eyes widened.
"We'll be right there, love." Hilda said and Sabrina hung up the phone, looking at Victoria.
She raised her eyebrows and licked her lips, stepping out of the booth. Her arms were crossed, showing demanding posture. Sabrina was impressed by her composure and how she could keep her calm. "Are you going to save harrowed children?" She asked, not really sure if she heard things right.
Sabrina nodded in agreement. "Uh-huh, but to be clear... We are."
Just when Victoria was about to protest, Nicholas Scratch approached them. A smirk was plastered on his face. His bag was hanging on his left shoulder, full of books. "Hello ladies."
"Hello, Nicholas." They both greeted him at the same time, which made the warlock laugh.
"What are you up to? Maybe I can help?" He asked, scanning their figures. The girls looked at each other, before shaking their heads and smiling awkwardly. They didn't want Nicholas know about their plan and they decided to keep it a secret. Sabrina squeezed Victoria's arm to let her know that they needed to go.
Without saying goodbye to Nicholas - they both hurried away, leaving the boy speechless.

"Quentin, would you please come out?" Sabrina asked softly, autumn wind blowing her hair. Her cheeks were flushed due to the low temperature outside, making her look bewitching. "We want to help, please feel free to bring the others."
Victoria furrowed her eyebrows mouthing to the blonde 'The others?'. She dismissed her with a wave of a hand and turned around. The only thing they could hear was bird chipping and leaves rustling. The atmosphere surrounding them was magical and somehow... stoic. Nothing was more calm than silence.
They felt like they're being watched by someone and as if on cue - they turned around, just to see a large group of children, killed by harrowing. The children's faces showed suffering, which made Victoria's heart break a little.
Hilda sniffled and scanned the kids' figures. "Oh, the poor dears, your heart breaks for them!" She said at the sight.
A tear escaped Victoria's eye, suddenly feeling empathic for them. She saw in her head their deaths, one by one. Their life ended painfully, making them bound to the academy. The girl smiled sadly while looking at Quentin, again being overwhelmed by all those feelings.
"They are bound to the academy, because they died here." She exclaimed.
Zelda shook her head, not believing what she saw. "Witches hurting witches, it's unspeakable." The redhead said in disbelief.
"How can we free them? They need to be released from here." Sabrina asked.
"Where would we go?" Quentin questioned, moving closer to the Spellmans. "This is our home, we have nowhere to go."
The girl gasped and stepped forward, crouching. "They want revenge, isn't it right?" As those words left her mouth, the children nodded in agreement. "Alright, come here kids."

As they were going back to the academy, Victoria felt a piercing headache, like it wanted to blow her head. Sure, she always had headaches, but never this painful. Just as she was almost by the door, she felt her energy getting drained with each second passing by. Now she knew, something was definitely wrong, but the girl didn't know the cause of it.
She rubbed her temples, hoping it would help. "Ah, shit..." The girl cursed and leaned on the wall, breathing deeply.
Having the ability to mind control just like her was great, but it had its pros and cons. She could control other people's mind, but not hers - she thought of it as a curse. Most of the time her power was useless, even now, when she needed it the most.
Sabrina sat down on the stairs, opened her bag and pulled out a teal ball, but not exactly round. Its spikes were ended with a glass tip, persuading someone to look inside them. Soon, Victoria figured out it was an Acheron Configuration - an object that made some people go crazy. She wondered why Sabrina was holding an object like that.
"Blackwood gave it to me," She started, sighing. "Said, as soon as I solve it, I get to take conjuring classes."
Victoria sat right next to the blonde and took the object into her hands. Once it was in her hands, she immediately sensed something wrong with it. Its aura was off. "There's something weird with it." She warned her.
"What do you mean? It's just an object." Sabrina shrugged her arms and looked into one of few spikes. "I'll try to solve it tonight, so I can join conjuring next week."
Someone snorted behind them. The girls turned their heads around to see Nicholas Scratch shaking his head softly, clearly amused. "Or go mad trying to solve it." He exclaimed, grabbing the object from Victoria's hands. "See... your father designed and built it and Blackwood's been trying to solve this damn thing for twenty years."
"He's like, obsessed with this thing." Victoria huffed, messing with the configuration. "It's almost like a kaleidoscope, it's that addictive you can get lost in it." She passed the object into Sabrina's hands. She rolled her eyes and shove it in her bag.
"Wait... if my father made it, then he probably wrote about it in his journals, right?" The blonde asked with her eyes wide open.
Nicholas clicked his tongue and scrunched his face in deep thought. "Nothing I've come across." He shook his head and locked his eyes with Sabrina's.
"Then sneak me into the library, get me access to his journals and boom!" She exclaimed clapping her hands.
"Yeah, get caught and then get expelled from the academy." Victoria said in a sarcastic tone. She shook her head and turned her body towards the younger Spellman. "They are considered dangerous texts and you can't even take notes while reading them."
The blonde sighed. "I doubt I'd be expelled, they'd probably extend my immersion indefinitely."
"The academy is great, Sabrina and it wouldn't be such a bad thing to be a full-time student here." Victoria said, tilting her head to the side.
"Yeah, but I have friends in Baxter High and I can't leave them." She replied, smiling sadly. Sabrina rose from her seat and grabbed her bag. "I should go."
Just as the blonde walked away, Nicholas and Victoria got up from the stairs. The boy was sudden in grabbing her hand in his own, pulling her inside the academy. His touch was oddly comforting for her as he led her through the hallways.
"Where are we going, Nicholas?" She huffed as he pulled her through the courtyard. "We have demonology next and we can't be late, unless you want Mr. Saltzman to chop our heads off." The girl grumbled, attentively observing Scratch.
He sat down on a bench, smiling happily. "I wanted to skip Demonology to spend some time with you." Nicholas honestly replied.
Victoria opened her mouth to say something back, but nothing came out of her mouth. He wanted to spend some time with her? It wasn't new for her, Nicholas would always approach her in their free time, so why was she so shocked? Maybe the reason was that she never got any attention from warlocks, maybe it was something else.
"So what were you and Sabrina doing in the woods?" He questioned, smile still lingering on his face.
She was surprised. Again. Nicholas was very clever and slick when it came to connecting facts and detecting lies. "We were just walking around the academy and that's it." She nodded, the corners of her mouth lifting up.
"What are you doing tonight?" He asked suddenly, catching the girl off of guard.
Victoria hummed. "I need to catch up on some homework, why?"
"I figured we could study or spend a nice evening together." He shrugged his arms, grabbing an apple from his bag and taking a bite.
"Let's meet at 10 p.m in the library, where I always sit."
