Ch. 1: Helping Jack
Mark made his way to the local town's police station, making sure nobody saw him as he hovered down behind the plaza. As he walked around to the frong entrance, he caught his reflection in a car window. He watched as the bright red color on his hair faded back to it's natural dark color, exactly the way it was before he got his powers. It was crazy to see it turn back the way it was, leaving Mark even more astounded than before. But he didn't have time to admire that now, he needed to get inside and find Jack.
Of course, everybody in there was shocked to see one of their missing persons suddenly return. Mark was quickly met by the sheriff and escorted to his office. He informed Mark that Jack was ok and had a bunch of questions for him too. Sadly, Mark couldn't really answer any of them. He just told the sheriff how he invited everyone to the manor for the weekend, but then everything after that is mostly a blank, someone tried to kill him and then finally he woke up in a river. Obviously, he didn't mention the meteor or strange powers because who knows what would've happened yet.
It wasn't much of a story, or even much of a believable one. It didn't matter though, it was all he had, regrettably. The sheriff grew slightly suspicious, not all convinced, but all mark could do was apologize for not having more answers and wishing he did. The sheriff seemed kindly understanding, but Mark was sure he was still a suspect in the manor, his ex-wife being one of the victims after all. Nonetheless, sheriff seemed to believe him and informed that the inability to remember what happened was probably from the shock and that it would all hopefully come back to him soon.
When Mark asked if Jack knew anything, the sheriff replied no. Jack was kept in his room during the events that took place in the manor and never really saw anything. He heard many strange noises and went to go check everything out. He saw some of the other guest rushing up and down the stairs, the colonel mostly, but was locked in his room by Tyler and Ethan and warned to stay in there until they came and got him. However, hours later and all Jack heard was more and more noises, voices and rustling around the house before the cops finally came and brought him to safety. Mark was slightly disappointed that Jack didn't have any answers, but more importantly was more relieved and knowing his friend was ok and safe during the whole time.
Jack himself was relieved and excited when he saw Mark alive and walking in the door. Mark bent over to let his good pal pull him in for a reassuring and relieving hug, swearing Jack almost cried when he did. Then he happily pushed the wheelchair bound, eyepatch wearing Irishman outta the station. Once outside, Mark brought Jack back to the other side of the station where he landed and knelt down to meet his eyes.
"Hey, so uh...you really didn't see anything" Mark asked, already knowing the answer. Jack shook his head regretfully, but then pointed to Mark as if to ask if he saw anything. "I wish I did, but I honestly can't remember a damn thing" Mark shrugged with a head shake. But then Jack made the motions with his hands to ask Mark, "what happened to you? And how did you make it back?"
When Jack asked that, an idea popped into Mark's head and he smiled at the idea. Ever since Mark became Jack's caregiver, all he wanted to do was help Jack and take away all of his problems, and now he could. "Do you really wanna know?" he asked with a huge grin and Jack nodded. "Ok, let's go" and Mark rose back to a stance and gently turned Jack's chair to where he was facing the back of the building.
Jack caught sight of Mark's hair turning red and furrowed his eyebrows in confusion before pointing it out to Mark. "Oh what, is my hair turning red?" Mark almost chuckled as he shuffled his hair to get as good of a glimpse of it as he could and Jack nodded. "Trust me, that's not even close to how weird things are about to get" Mark stated. He then went over to wear the huge dumpster behind the station was, looked around to make sure no-one else was watching, looked back at Jack with that huge grin still plastered to his face and then proceeded.
With his bare hands, he picked up the entire dumpster with ease and used his palms to lift it up over his head. He then turned back to Jack, who had a dumbfounded expression and jaw nearly hitting his lap as he watched the amazing and impossible display before him. It grew even more when Mark began to rise, still holding the dumpster, and slowly fly higher in thin air. He was careful to be sure that he didn't go past the station and risk anyone else seeing him before lowering back down and placing it back in it's rightful place. Still having that huge grin on his face, Mark made his way back to his Irish friend, who still had that shocked expression on his face, as Mark grabbed the armchairs.
"I know it's freaky, but I promise it's still me" he quickly reassured and Jack seemed a little calmer, but still in disbelief. "The last thing I can remember was getting shot, I don't know by who, but then I woke up and there was this meteor, it saved my life" he informed as Jack listened very intently. "It might be able to help you too, would you like that?" he asked a little nervously.
Jack seemed a little hesitant on the decision, but he couldn't deny that it would be really great if he could get back to the way he was, or, from the looks of things, even better. So, he nodded and Mark's wide grin grew again. "Alright, come on" Mark said as he lifted Jack from the chair, giving it a good kick and causing it to smash against the dumpster, before flying away with Jack in his arms.
He flew Jack over to where he hid the meteor by the river and sat Jack down on a huge log that was right across from where he hid the giant rock from space. It was covered under a pile a branches and leaves that Mark removed to reveal it's contents to Jack. Once he saw the glowing stones attached to the hard object, he had the same expression Mark had when he first laid eyes on them. Jack seemed nervous to proceed, so Mark kindly brought him up again and guided him closer to the rock. Once close enough, Jack reached out and placed his hand flat on one of the glowing stones, which then immediately got brighter before giving off some kinda pulse-like force that knocked the two away.
Mark grunted as he made it back to his feet, then panicked when he realized Jack wasn't in his arms anymore. "Jack!" Mark called, then his attention was caught by a moan. He went over and found Jack struggling to move. "Jack, you ok?" he quickly asked.
"Ugh fukin hell" he grunted, causing Mark's eyes to buldge at the sudden words. Then Jack himself realized what he just did. "Uh, I...I can talk" he stated, flabbergasted by the sound of his own voice.
"You can talk!" Mark repeated with the same expression and emotion.
"I can talk!" Jack exclaimed again. "I can talk-oh man, thankyou!" he happily and emotionally stated as he gave his best friend the tightest hug he could ever. "Thankyou" he laughed excitedly.
"Ok ok" Mark laughed back as he accepted the hug. "Oh! And the eyepatch, take it off and see, literally" he eagerly ordered after pulling back and Jack did so on command. He slowly and anxiously removed the round leather patch that covered his right eye. Once it was removed, both of Jack's eyes widened as the new and greatly improved vision in his right eye was revealed.
"Oh. My. God" Jack breathed out in astonishment.
"Can you see?" Mark asked excitedly with a smile.
"Can I....I can do more than that! I can see EVERYTHING!" Jack announced in amazement. "Like literally, this eye is showing me everything, things in the dark, things in the distance, I can see things no other human being can see! It's literally showing me everything! Aw this is awesome!" he exclaimed like a child who got his favorite gift.
"Hey Jack" Mark suddenly realized something and caught his attention.
"What?"
"Ur hair is green" he pointed out.
"What?" Jack furrowed his eyebrows and looked around for something to see his reflection in. He found a small puddle of water and knelt over to see. Just as Mark said, the top part of Jack's hair was bright green. "Aw dude, that is neat" he whispered in astonishment. "What is this? Why does it change like that?" he turned back to Mark.
"I don't know" he shrugged. "I think it's like...a mark of our power or something like that" he suggested.
"Wha-you mean like...Dragon ball Z?" he furrowed again.
"I mean I guess, it only comes on whenever we...go active or whatever" he really didn't know what it was, but both agreed it was cool nonetheless.
"Well, whatever it is, it's really cool" Jack stated. "Who knows, it could come in handy" he added with a shrug. "But man, I hafta say, you just changed my life, I don't think I could thankyou enou-"
"Hold it right there!" someone bursted out before Jack could finish. Both men turned to where it sounded like the voice was coming from. They saw a guy wearing tactical body armor and pointing an assault rifle towards them while standing on a steep surface that allowed him to stand right above the two and catch em square if they tried anything.
"What the hell?" Jack whispered as he and Mark raised their hands.
"Listen, when I say so," Mark tried to whisper, but wasn't quiet enough.
"Shut up!" the gunman demanded and started talking to his radio, he must've had friends with him. While he was chatting on it, Mark stomped hard on the ground and caused a huge branch to jump up before throwing it at the guy, knocking him away.
"Now, run!" he ordered. But as soon as Jack started running, he ran so fast that he halted to a stop and was already 50yards away from his best friend. Mark didn't even see him run, he just saw jack turn into a blur and then vanish. Jack, who was dumbfounded again by how fast he just moved, turned back to find Mark and could barely see him through the woods. Mark was brought out of his own astonishment when another tactical troop ran up wherr the last guy was and immediately started firing at him.
Mark's life flashed before his eyes as he brought his arms up in some sense of defense. But once the bullets hit him, they bounced right off his body. Mark could even feel them bouncing off with no feeling of pain or force behind them. He brought his arms down and checked every inch of himself, no wounds or anything, just tiny pieces of metal lying on the ground and a ruined shirt. He then looked up to see the gunman practically crapping himself before flying up, grabbing him by the vest on the way up and lightly throwing him at a tree, but enough to make him bounce off of it and come crashing back down on the floor.
Then another gunman on ground started shooting at him too, but to no avail. Mark just flew down and shoved him, or more like sending him flying away. Mark didn't see any other gunmen around, so he went back to the meteor, picked it up and started carrying it away. Meanwhile, Jack was being confronted by another gunman.
"Stop right there!" he shouted as he suddenly jumped outta the bushes and a gun pointed at Jack.
"NO!!!" Jack shouted at the top of his lungs in a sudden panic. But then, the sound waves given off by his voice not only shattered the glass tactical goggles, but also sent him flying away. The latest ability to leave Jack stunned, but his attention was quickly grabbed by two other gunmen who appeared on either side of him, both with guns raised and ready to use. "Wait!" Jack shouted as he raised his hands, inadvertently flicking his wrist which then caused something to shoot out from the scars on his wrist. It was weird and freaked Jack out, but whatever it was, it attached to one of the assailant's guns and allowed him to yank it back and smack it into the other foe's face.
Jack let out a small laugh at the action that just occurred and then turned his attention back to the still conscious and standing gunman, who was yanking out his sidearm pistol and getting ready to use it. Jack ran, or sped, right to the assaulter and sent him flying away with a punch to the gut. Yet another action that caught the Irishman by surprise as the gunman clutched his gut and rolled around on the ground while spitting out blood and tryna catch his breath. Jack, still being the kind spirit that he was, went ahead and made sure the guy would live, and from what Jack's eye showed him, he had some bad injuries but nothing fatal. Jack wasn't sure how he was able to see that, but his attention was caught by Mark as he flew over.
"Jack!" Mark called from above. "Come on! Let's get outta here!" and as Mark flew away with the meteor, ran took off again. When Mark watched, all he could see was this little blur rushing across the forest, it was a crazy sight, among the others he's seen. They were both headed for town and with Jack's speed and Mark's flight, they could meet there in seconds. But of course, Jack made it there first.
However, when he got there, the newly obtained vision in his right eye seemed to be going into overdrive. The minute Jack went to the streets, the first thing he saw was the town's people. When he saw them with his left eye, he could see just them, but with his right eye, they were glowing colors. It was like a ray of inner light that was shining from within them, and that on top of the craziest things that Jack had seen today, this definitely took the cake. It scared him at first, making him freak out a little and drawing the attention of other town's folk.
But he was able to collect himself after a minute, realizing they were still just the people. Jack didn't know why his eye was making him see them like this, but it was weird and confusing and almost disorienting. But one guy in particular was different, he was glowing a different color. Everyone else was glowing green, this guy was glowing red. Jack tried to make sense of this, first by closing his right eye just to look with his normal left, he seemed like an ordinary person. He was middle-aged, well dressed, carried a briefcase, he seemed like an average working man. But whenever Jack opened his right eye again and saw this man shine red, he got this uneasy feeling like this man was something bad.
Whatever it was, Jack needed to find out. So, he walked down the sidewalk where the same man was standing and looking at pieces of fruit outside a market. Jack casually made his way down the sidewalk, acting as a ordinary citizen and checking out the other places around while glancing at the man and making sure he didn't go anywhere. Once Jack got closer to the man, he too started picking at the market fruit right next to the man. He was looking through the different types of fruit and glancing at the person whenever he could, not knowing exactly what he was looking for but kept his eyes open.
Then the gentleman put down the last piece of fruit and started walking in Jack's direction. Jack put down his fruit and stepped in front of the man, but acted like it was a natural mistake. But then, once they were standing right in front of each other, Jack locked eyes with him and saw multiple images in his right eye. What he saw was images of the same guy, but with a woman, who Jack assumed was his wife, and he was abusing her while a boy and a girl stayed in a corner, wrapped in each other's protective arms as all they could do was helplessly watch their mommy attacked and humiliated.
The process that Jack was going through was so surreal, that he didn't realize that the man walked past him while he had been leaning against the table and covering his eye. As soon as Jack came back to it, he turned around to see him walking away. Jack's head hurt from the experience and he was slightly confused as to what the hell just happened, but he couldn't shake the feeling he was getting from all of this, he needed to know if those images were true and if this guy was up to no good. So, he followed that person.
There was a good distance between Jack and his target, so following him without getting caught shouldn't be a problem. And even if he did turn around, Jack was too quick for him to see now. Plus, it looked like this guy was walking home rather than driving which made this easier. With all of this in mind, and his newly obtained powers, Jack had probably the biggest confidence he had ever felt in himeslf. Jack followed the man to some houses that were right by the town.
Since it was a small town, this guy was probably used to people walking in the same direction as him because he never once glanced back. It was only a couple of minutes before they reached his house. Jack stopped by a tree to keep watch while the man walked up the steps, unlocked the door and entered his home. Jack stepped out from behind the tree and continued to walk down the sidewalk until he was at the center of the walkway. Luckily, Jack's super eye could also show him what was going on inside the house, it must've showed him whatever he wanted.
What he saw, was that the wife was preparing dinner as the husband walked into the dining room. After a minute of looking angrily at the food and talking with his wife, the man started throwing a fit. He flipped up one of the plates and caused it's contents the spill on the table and was yelling at the wife, who was frightened and tried to calm him down, but to no avail. Then he started getting forceful with and looked as if he was threatening to get even worse. Now he even had his hand raised and ready to slap her, but before he could,
CRASH! Jack waisted no time in rushing to and bursting through the door. "Woah! What the hell are you doing here!" the man shouted in a threatening manor.
"Seeing how you like it muther fuker!" Jack spat out as he made his way towards the man. Once he got close enough, the abuser swung at him, but Jack was too quick. The first hit he dodged, and followed it with a slap. The second he dodged again, but followed this one with a punch. Now the guy was furious and was throwing punches left and right, until Jack sped around and slapped him again. Only this time, the slap knocked him out.
Jack was surprised at how easily he beat the guy and didn't know how it was possible. But nonetheless, he was proud of his work. He went to check on the wife who now had her two kids with their arms wrapped around her legs and all seemed a little frightened of Jack. "It's ok, I'm not here to hurt you, and he's not going to again" he kindly assured, easing their tensions.
The wife still seemed slightly nervous and kept her children close. "Everything is ok now, just call the police, tell him what he did and I saved you" he calmly instructed.
"But...they won't believe what..."
"You don't hafta tell them how it happened, just tell them a man came in and saved you" he quickly assured and then his attention was caught by foot steps running up the stairs. It was Mark, he came in, saw everyone and gave Jack a questioning look. "It's ok, I saved them" Jack noted.
Mark turned to the family and then the unconscious man on the floor. "Oh, ok then" he nodded. "But listen, we hafta go now, we gotta get somewhere safe" he quickly informed and Jack nodded in agreement.
"Trust me, just do as I said and it'll work out just fine" he quickly noted to the family and was about to follow Mark outta the house.
"Wait!" the lady called, stopping the two so she could walk up to them. "Who are you two?" she asked, now seeming astonished.
Mark and Jack glanced at each other nervously at first, but then knowingly and confidently before turning back to the family. "We're friends" Mark answered happily.
There was a brief pause as tears formed in the mother's eyes. "Thankyou" she breathed out, looking at Jack.
"Of course" Jack nodded. He then saw the little kids looking up at him. He bent down on one knee to meet their eyes. "Things do get better, maybe not today or even tomorrow, but they do eventually get better" he encouraged as the children intently listened. "Remember that" he brought up his fist for them to bumb, to which the boy first did eagerly and then the girl followed his actions.
"Come on Jack, we gotta go" Mark noted and Jack stood before both men waved goodbye and rushed off. Mark taking flight, Jack speeding away, and the family looking on in amazement. They would never forget these two incredible people that brought them outta the darkest time in their lives.
