Preparing for the End - 26
Six days after the class 6 revealed itself, the crew finds themselves seated around the main scanner. It's silent. It's been silent for all six days.
Y/N's at a meeting with her supervisor. She told him about the class 6 right away, but now they're trying to find solutions. Of course her supervisor brought up nukes. One problem: ever since it was revealed, it hasn't appeared again. That's why everyone's seated around the scanner. They need to be ready for it to beep. They need to be ready to die.
"Are we going to talk about the elephant in the room?" Apollo's voice shakily asks.
The others snap up. That's the first voice Jungkook's heard in days. Him and his girlfriend don't even talk anymore, they simply hold each other and feel. Jimin and Raven are the same way. Ever since they said their first 'I love you' they've been impossible to pull apart. Even now, Raven's on his lap facing him, the two hugging and rocking each other back and forth.
Jungkook's not sure what the 'elephant in the room' is, but he's sure it relates to the fact that they're here, sitting. It's why they're not speaking: because they're preparing for the end. As soon as that scanner beeps, they're done. It's over. They die.
"What elephant?" Val replies, organizing the medkit she brought from the infirmary. It's one of her and Jin's hobbies: organizing medicine. They like to do it together, so it's nice to know that even in the end, someone's still trying to keep going with their life.
"Jungkook is the chosen one, but he can't use his powers without knowing if he'll attack us again or not," Apollo explains.
Ah great, bring up more of Jungkook's trauma. Bring up how he's a failure who can't control his demon blood. Great. Bring up how he's a demon at all. That makes Jungkook feel so much better about the situation they're in.
"It's not like I can train it," Jungkook murmurs.
"I'm not blaming you," Apollo says in a rather comforting tone, "but it's a factor we need to think about. No one's talked about it. We should. We're a team, let's act like it."
Yoongi and Hoseok, who were left behind during the rift battle, are the first to perk up at that.
"Well there has to be a way to replicate danger, right?" Hoseok asks.
Yoongi nods. "If we can make Jungkook feel like he's in danger, his powers might activate and he can work on it."
"Val tried that with Y/N, it didn't work. It'll have to be with something unpredictable. Like a demon."
Val strokes her chin. "Well I'd hate to find out on the battlefield and end up fighting two demons. We need to do it in a controlled space."
Yoongi stands, sauntering over to Jungkook. "Get up."
Jungkook does, brushing himself off as the older man approaches. He naturally stands a bit straighter around the elder. But that quickly changes when Yoongi takes out a dagger and fucking stabs him in the shoulder.
Jungkook shouts in pain, the others gasping in surprise. Meanwhile, he feels red flash through his vision, his fingertips glowing. Soon enough, his horns break out while Yoongi takes Jayden's sword. He stands in a fighting stance, bouncing on his heels. Jungkook completely breaks out into demon form, his flamed tail and wings sprouting. And just like that, Yoongi attacks.
On instinct, Jungkook steps back, kicking Yoongi. The older one regains his footing in a matter of seconds, the two breaking out in a brawl. Jungkook manages to hold back and doesn't go for his sword, rather using his abilities. However, that quickly changes when Yoongi gets the upper hand.
He makes a few cuts on Jungkook's skin, but nothing too deep that it won't heal in time for another fight. Jungkook hisses, feeling himself reach a new level of his powers. Like a stage 2, almost. He winces as the flames fill his body, his teeth clattering.
Oh no. He feels it. The pull.
It's like his body is going on autopilot as he attacks, this time much more aggressively. His hands feel like they can harness flames, and he shoots them at Yoongi. In his shock, he barely dodges in time.
Jungkook seethes, snarling and jumping back at Yoons. In his anger, he doesn't even realize how badly he's hurting Yoongi until Hoseok tackles him. Jungkook's vision blurs in and out. Autopilot. His body's on autopilot. He can barely process what's happening until...
'Slap!'
Jungkook gasps and falls to the ground, feeling his anger fall. The red shelling his horizon fades away. When he pants and looks up, his jaw drops.
"W-What the hell did I do?" Jungkook asks in a whisper. Jimin's standing there, panting and shaking his head. "Jimin, what did I do?"
"You..."
Jimin stops, pointing to Yoongi, who's on the ground. Jungkook stares at the bloody sight, every cell in his body burning. Then, he twists to the side and throws up on the ground. Jimin crawls over, patting his back.
"N-No, I can't do this... I can't keep doing this! I'll hurt everyone at this rate! You have to bench me. Namjoon, please bench me!" Jungkook cries, unable to look at the sight of Yoongi's battered body, but he has to. He has to to remind himself that this is what he can do if he doesn't contain himself.
His eyes reluctantly flicker over to the pale man on the ground. Val is next to him, as is Jin, Hoseok softly crying both from the pitiful sight of Yoongi and the pain he must be feeling.
Jungkook doesn't remember what happened, but he has a flash himself attacking Hoseok. However, Hoseok is in nowhere near as bad as Yoongi. Jungkook swallows and sobs, seeing Yoongi's leg bent at an unnatural angle, same with his arm. The man is more shocked than in pain, his eyes wide and his breathing jagged. There's blood coming from his head, sweat forming on his revealed skin.
"He'll be okay, but it'll take a few days to heal. We need to snap his arm and leg back in place," Val says, "Jin, get the stretcher from the infirmary. Jimin and Namjoon, I'll need your strength to get him onto it and carry him back."
Namjoon and Jimin agree, Jimin giving Jungkook one more reassuring glance before standing and going over to help Val. Jungkook on the other hand zones out. He slumps on his ass, staring at the ground with no emotion in his eyes. He just hurt one of his brother's. Badly. Horribly. To the point where it'll take days to heal.
Apollo comes over to Jungkook, kneeling and taking the knife out of his shoulder. Jungkook doesn't even flinch.
"He made his choice, it's not your fault you have demon blood in your veins. Lillian unlocked it, not you. You can't blame her or yourself for this. Demon blood has this kind of effect," Apollo explains, Val sliding the medkit over to him so he can stop the bleeding and stitch Jungkook up.
The whole time Jungkook, doesn't move or speak. Apollo sighs at his silence, quickly closing the wound and dabbing any other cuts Jungkook has with a disinfectant.
"That should will heal in maybe two hours tops. Don't use it if you don't have to for another day," Apollo says.
"I thought you were a warrior, not a medic," Jungkook manages to mutter, still not looking at Apollo.
"In this world, you adapt to survive. I learned what I had to," he explains. He pauses, then sighs and pats Jungkook on his uninjured shoulder. "You're a good man, Jungkook. I mean that from the bottom of my heart."
Jungkook finally meets Apollo's gaze. "You shouldn't say something like that. Not after what I did."
"I don't blame you," Yoongi calls out in a heave just as Jin comes back with the stretcher, "Apollo's right. I made my choice and I'm fine with it. It'll heal. I'm more worried about you. If I have to sacrifice myself to help you contain your powers, I'd say that's worth it."
Jungkook sniffles, Apollo cautiously reaching up to wipe his tears. Jungkook lets him.
Jayden comes over as well, kneeling next to Apollo. Those two together are a sight for sore eyes. Jungkook always feels at ease whenever he sees them. It's like they're meant to be together. Not necessarily in a romantic way, but in a way that feels like soulmates, whether that be a relationship or not.
"You don't have to be perfect," Jayden whispers, Apollo nodding in agreement. "Jungkook, you may have lied to us for years, but I want you to know that we forgive you. We always will, no matter what. Yoongi doesn't even blame you for this. We love you, Jungkook. And when the class 6 comes back and we have to fight, we'll gladly fight by your side."
"There's no one else I'd rather die for than the people around me now," Apollo says, bowing his head ever so slightly. "Thank you, Jungkook. Thank you for being a leader for us. For being courageous enough to keep fighting despite it all."
Jungkook can't help but break down. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. I'm not the leader you want me to be. I hurt my own teammates and couldn't stop myself. I can't do anything right! I couldn't even stop myself from getting hurt when I fought that stupid demon in Japan! I'm nothing!"
Jayden and Apollo have wide eyes, Jungkook sniffling. Then, he feels a pair of arms wrap around his back. He goes still, hearing a soft shushing noise brushing by his ear.
"You're everything to us," Y/N's voice whispers.
Seeing her back in the bunker soothes his heart, and he turns and completely engulfs the girl in his arms, rocking her back and forth and sobbing into her shoulder. She strokes his locks and keeps shushing him, even humming a gentle tune to calm him down.
"Why am I it? Why me? I don't want to let everyone down, I don't want to hurt anyone!" he says in a whimper.
"I don't know, but you won't let us down. I know you won't. And if you fail? We'll be right next to you to help you."
Jimin notices the commotion and rushes over. "We just got Yoongi to the infirmary. Val's seeing to his wounds right now. He'll be okay. Please remember that, Kook."
Jungkook shakily pulls away from Y/N and kisses her forehead, the woman softening at his vulnerable state. He stands without giving her a chance to speak, noticing how everyone's watching him. Some watch in concern, some in confusion, some even with tears in their eyes. Jungkook's not sure if the emotion's high from the class 6 or the Yoongi fight or both, but he knows everyone's a mess right now.
"We're about to fight a class 6," Raven whispers. Jimin goes to her right away, but she doesn't need comfort. Rather, she stands. "And we're going to fucking win."
The others all jump at her bold words.
"That thing wiped out the entire race of Hunters! Now we have to fight another on top of there being a rift too!" Taehyung says in protest.
"We have two half-breeds and each other. Get the old textbooks, study what you can, train constantly. We're taking this thing down," Raven says without any cracks daring to touch her voice.
The others, although shocked by her sudden leadership, nod.
"I'm not gonna lie to you guys, I don't think we're all coming out of this," she says, and her eyes flicker to Jimin for a long moment. "But at the very least, we can limit who dies. We need to. I'm not losing the people I love."
Jungkook's not sure if she's saying it to the group or herself. Her eyes stay on Jimin, the man staring back. Jungkook feels bad for the pair. They've loved each other their whole lives. They grew up together and finally got into a relationship not too long ago, now it's possible that can get taken away. Jungkook gulps and takes Y/N's hand, giving it a small squeeze.
"Raven's right, we can do this," he agrees.
They need a leader, and right now, Jungkook needs to step up. He may have just massively fucked up, but he needs to try and redeem himself. For Yoongi. For Lillian.
"Gear up and be ready to fight. We need to save the world from this thing before it destroys everything. It took years until we were able to build up from dust after the first class 6. We're not letting it happen again. This time we'll get closure, I promise," Jungkook says.
The others start to get more inspired, standing and cracking small smiles. Faith. They have faith again. Jungkook stands tall, not fully inspired, but inspired enough to make a difference. They need this.
They need him.
