Chapter 1

A thick fog covered the tall buildings of the Tremaine kingdom, guards studded in shining armor walked through each street. Every step was practiced, every turn was routine, and every night was silent. The fog swam across the metal feet of the guards, it curled and twisted around the lamp posts as each one was put out. Families lay down to sleep, workers head home once the sunsets, and the King and Queen lie down their newborn for her first night at the castle. Peeking around the door, they watch her a second more before closing it. The newborn coos, reaching her small chubby hands into the air and towards the jeweled chandelier above her. Things were quiet, the royal couple set themselves to bed and the night goes on. Hours pass, and soon the guards stop to rest. One by one as each guard stands at his post, two figures glide across the houses. No noise is heard as the wind carried them across the rooftops, their steps light and full of purpose as they made their way through the kingdom. Once at the castle entrance they plan their route, both knowing the castle grounds all too well. A guard turns a corner and sees the black hoods, quickly a sword is drawn from his back. But before he could attack the sound of shattered glass fills his ears, then a thick black smoke filled his view. Dazed and infuriated, he set out to find the others, letting the black figures slip over the wall and into the castle grounds. Guards were on every corner, standing, walking, speaking, they weren't easy to avoid. But one figure knew a way, it lead the other through a series of underground tunnels until they opened a door leading into a main hallway.

Quietly, they walked along the long red carpet. Two doors appeared on their right, one belonging to the royal couple, the other holding their goal. As they suspected, the door was locked. Looking for a key would be impossible as the only light source available was the dim moonlight through the ornate windows behind them. Suddenly a sound caught their attention, the jingle of keys echoed down the hallway. Quickly they hid, one behind a standing suit of armor, and the other inside a large window curtain. They watched, and listened, until a guard came into view. He was stumbling, and holding a fairly large and empty bottle. His attention was caught by the glowing purple eyes from the curtain, stunned he staggered closer. And once he did, an arm shot around his neck and cut off the little bit of air he was breathing. The bottle dropped from his hand as he fainted, thankfully the noise didn't alert anyone else. He was set down against the wall, and the keys were taken from his belt. Slowly the door was unlocked, both figures slipped into the room and closed the door behind them. Letting out a relieved sigh they took off their hoods, taking a moment to look at each other.

"You could have been more cautious, someone else could have come around the corner."
A pair of orange eyes glared into the other who only huffed and turned away.

"It doesn't matter now, we're here and we are going to finish this mission."
Slowly he stepped towards the crib, listening to the quiet coos coming from it. They both looked in and saw what they were looking for, the chubby little princess fast asleep. Carefully, the purple eye'd stranger scooped her into his arms. He wrapped her in her blanket, and tied her onto his chest.

"She should be safe like this, hurry I'm sure the guard from the gate called for reinforcements."
He looked out the window and watched as many torches were lit and held high, they could be caught at any moment.

"You know this mission is risky, if we get caught it could mean the end of our lives."
A hint of uneasiness came from the other, his own deep amber eyes scanning the outside scene. The other nodded in agreement, but was determined to finish this.

"Enoch, you are my best friend. And you did not have to come knowing the risk we are taking, but you did and I am grateful. If I get caught I want you to continue the mission, take her back to camp and keep her safe."
Violet and amber eyes locked, they stared at each other intensely.

"I'm not letting you get captured, we are in this together until the end."
Enoch put his hood back on and adjusted his glasses, the other nodded and put on his own hood. Their bodies freeze as footsteps are heard outside the door, guards had gathered around and they spoke quite loudly.

"What were you doing on the floor? Two people had come into the castle, and here you are drunk off your ass!"
The guard seemed to be yelling at the drunken guard from before, who's voice was quivering in slight fear.

"I-i saw them! I-i think, I came around here and saw something in the curtain! T-they were here!"
His panicked voice filled the hallway, but a click caught the newborn holders attention. Quietly Enoch unlocked the window behind the crib, he motioned for the other to follow.

"Well next time don't go drinking before sunset, the king and queen are already nervous about the princesses safety! Where are your keys, we must check on her!"
Frantically the sound of clattering armor and the ruffling of clothes was heard, before long the main guard became furious.

"You lost them?! I swear I'll have your head taken off for this!"
The yelling of the guards caused the king to wake, he opened the door and yelled.

"What is the meaning of this? My wife and I are trying to sleep, explain to me why you are here!"
The guards quickly got into a line and stood still, the commander stepped forward.

"My King, I apologise for our loud activity but we must inform you that two hooded thieves have entered the castle! One of our guards was too drunk to notice them come in, we are hoping they have not taken the princess into their arms but we do not have the keys to open the doors!"
The King stared in horror, quickly he ran back into his room and dug through his drawers. The commotion woke the queen, who quickly got up and went to the guards. They did their best to keep her calm as the king found his spare key, tripping slightly on the carpet he ran and unlocked the door. Upon opening it he saw the open window, the curtains were swaying and being pulled outside by the wind. The queen ran past him and to the crib, she let out a scream in horror and collapsed against the crib.

"My child! They've stolen my child! She is gone!"
The guards quickly looked to the window, the fog was so thick they could only see the tips of capes flapping across the rooftops.

"Go and find them now!! Stop them, they cannot leave!!"
The King yelled furiously, the guards quickly ran out. Every guard was alerted, and every townsman and woman was awoken. It was becoming harder to navigate as the fog thickened, stopping behind a chimney Enoch quickly took a bottle from his bag.

"We must be close to the exit, quickly take a sip of this! I made it last night, it's to help us navigate through the fog."
The other took the bottle and inspected the dark blue liquid, quickly he took a sip and handed it back to his friend. Enoch took a sip as well, they waited before finally they could see. They saw the guards surrounding the exit, yet none were protecting the walls surrounding the town.

"We have to get over the wall, we can't walk out the front door without them realizing who we are."
He stood and set off across the rooftops once again, one hand holding the sleeping child still. Enoch followed, carefully watching the guards below. The last roof was infront of them, and the unguarded wall was ready for them.

"We'll have to go one at a time, you go first. You're the one with the child, I'll be behind you I promise."
Enoch handed the rope and hooks to his friend, who nodded and quickly tied them together. Taking a deep breath he swung the hook above him, and launched it across the wall. It landed and caught itself between two stones, Enoch took the end and tied it to a chimney and watched his friend.

Taking a deep breath, he adjusted the child strapped to his chest and pulled up his sleeve. On that arm was a mark, an ornate hatchet that went down from his left shoulder to his elbow. Slowly he grasped his arm then quickly pulled his fist away, a hatchet materialized into his hand and hung at his side. Taking a running start he jumped off the building, held onto the child and hooked the hatchet onto the rope. Sliding down from the building he landed on the wall and quickly climbed down as to avoid the mass of arrows and knives being thrown at him. He had no time to look back, he had to keep going. Quickly he jumped into a nearby tree, the guards were piling out the front like a hoard of rats. Every move had to be with purpose, quickly and as quietly as he could he leapt and swung from tree to tree. One hand always on the child, who was slowly waking up due to the crunching of branches, and the other hacking away with his hatchet. Soon enough the guards could see him, many bringing out their own weapons. Arrows and throwing knives were sent at him, he turned his back to them many times to protect the child.

"If they cared about the baby they wouldn't risk hitting her, Enoch better get here soon..."
The faster he jumped through the trees the quicker he got to the nearby cave, that was his ticket to freedom. The sound of heavy footsteps and yelling got quieter until he couldn't hear anything but the shaking leaves. He stopped and rested against a tree, pushing back his hood he pushed his damp red hair away from his eyes. It was quiet, the wind was humming and the leaves shook quietly. He took a moment to rest, before feeling uneasy. Looking around he felt as if he was being watched, but then he looked down and noticed two golden eyes peering up at him. The chubby little princess was wide awake and curious, gazing at him like he was the oddest thing she'd ever seen.

"Oh, hello princess..."
He smiled softly and poked her chubby cheeks with his finger, she let out a little giggle and latched onto his finger with her small hands. Getting distracted by her giggles and bright eyes he didn't notice a small group of guards making their way towards them. Once he did he hid in between the narrow tree branches, shielding the princess with his cape.

"C'mon men, he's got to be around here somewhere. The King figures he knows who did it, and once he's caught he'll get beheaded and we will be rewarded handsomely!"
The guard laughed and a few others joined along with him, they walked past the tree and out of sight. Quietly he climbed up higher, he clung onto the tree's body and looked over the vast field of trees around him until he saw it. There was a small patch where the entrance to a cave sat, slowly he slipped down the tree and ran in that direction. Unfortunately a guard saw the bright red hair from across the path, soon he had several on his tail. As quickly as his feet could go he ran, hopping over boulders, dodging overhanging tree limbs and tangled vines. Luckily he was knew the woods better then they did, many became caught in the vines, tripped over rocks or got knocked down by a stray branch. Finally he reached the clearing, panting softly he kneeled down to breathe. Before he could catch his breath a twig snapped behind him, quickly get turned around and held his hatchet in the face of the man standing behind him.

"Calm down Amon, it's just me."
Enoch have him a sheepish smile and pushed his hatchet away, Amon gave him a slightly smile before lowering the hatchet.

"Sorry heh, I'm glad you made it. And it seems someone else is interested in seeing you."
Two chubby little hands were reaching up towards the dark skinned man before her, Enoch chuckled and let her grip onto his thumb.

"She hasn't alerted any of the guards has she?"
He asked as he watched her play with his fingers, her eyes fixated on the bottle shaped mark on the back of his hands.

"Not at all, she's been very quiet. But we can't stay here for long, we have to head through the cave before they find us again."
Enoch nodded and started towards the cave, Amon followed close behind him. The cave they entered had a series of tunnels, each leading in different directions. Enoch took out a bottle from his satchel, he poured some kind of white dust like substance into his hand then threw it towards the two tunnels before them. Slowly the particles landed and lit up a trail of glowing blue through the left tunnel, the two followed the trail. Each time they entered an area with different exits, the white powder was spread and pointed them in the correct direction. Behind them the trail faded right before the guards entered, they decided to split up and go through different tunnels. Amon and Enoch emerged from the exit and followed a cobblestone path through a patch of thick woods, the guards behind them never came out the correct exit. Slowly the sun began to rise, it lit up Amon's fiery red hair and made Enoch's amber eyes shine brighter. Once out of the woods they came upon a small area of tents and potential cabins, upon entering they were greeted by many others. Women and children, men of every age and talent came to see them. And upon seeing the child herself, they cheered and began to celebrate. Enoch went to work explaining their experience to everyone, while Amon made his way to a large tent. Slowly he peeked in, a smile spread across his face. A woman with light brown hair was reading, and a small bundle was curled up against her.

"I'm back"
The woman looked to him and smiles brightly, she carefully held the bundle in her arms and went to him.

"Thank goodness, neither of you are hurt right?"
She looked over his face and body worriedly, until her eyes locked with the little girls. Amon chuckled and sat her down, he sat with her and unwrapped the princess.

"We're all safe, and she is going to be completely safe now that she is here. And I don't think Jasper would mind having a sister right?"
He smiled as little arms reached from the bundle the woman was holding, a small boys face poked out and squealed as he saw his father. Both of the children were unwrapped, and both excitedly hugged and poked each other. Amon wrapped an arm around his wife and kissed her forehead, she smiled and watched the children.

"Our family seems to be growing quite quickly, but what will we do about her in the future?"
She looked to him with her eyes full of worry, he looked to her then to the little girl.

"We'll tell her the truth when she's old enough, for now, we raise her as our own."
Outside the tent the sun rose, the sky turned from a deep pink and orange to a beautiful sky blue. Slowly the sun rose, and a new day began.
