Its okay to say goodbye
"Now Draco!" Bellatrix screeched impatiently.
Draco stood shakily with his wand pointed at Dumbledore who stood with an ominous calm.
Everything happened in a flash.
In seconds, Snape shot out and zapped Dumbledore with the killing curse.
Even hearing those two words made my blood curdle.
I slinked back into the shadows that the stairs made.
I slowed my breathing as the silence made it louder.
All I could think was that Draco didn't do it.
I couldn't tell if I was happy or sad about that.
Not that I wanted Draco to do it, but now I'm scared for his life.
I was caught in my own head when Bellatrix popped out in front of me.
I felt her bony hands wrap around my arms and throw me out into the light of the pale moon.
"Looks like we have a spy!" She sneered "Well maybe you can make up your Dumbledore death failure by killing you're little girlfriend!"
Draco started to shake harder as he raised his wand.
"I'm sorry y/n. I have no choice."
In that moment I went numb.
I went cold.
The blood and oxygen left my body and I froze.
But I also felt a sense of relief and trusting.
I closed my eyes and leaned my head straight up.
I started to walk closer to him to match the end of his wand to my throat.
Draco lowered his wand as I got closer.
I got close enough to him and opened my eyes as I slowly grabbed for his cold hand.
I slid his hand up to my neck and pressed his wand into my neck.
I looked at him and nodded.
His eyes puffed and reddened more as he knew he would have to.
"It's okay Draco. I'm ready. I'm ready."
"N-no." He squeaked out. I grabbed onto his hand that was level with my neck and nodded my head.
"I'll close my eyes if it makes it easier."
"I-I can't kill you." He begged.
"Yes, yes you can."
"But why are you letting me?"
"Because your life is more important than mine. You're special Draco."
"N-no. I can't. I can't kill you!"
He tried to move his hand but I jerked it back to my neck.
"Yes, you can." I prodded through gritted teeth.
"A...Av..."
I nodded as I closed my eyes.
"Av.... avad... a-I CANT DO IT!" Draco screamed as he fell to the floor.
"I CANT KILL HER!!"
Bellatrix tried to coo Draco but he threw her off.
"NO!" He screamed.
He turned to Bellatrix and threw the killing curse at her. She screamed and fell to the floor like a rag doll.
I stood back shocked as I looked at the mess he made.
"Draco! You just killed your aunt! And not only that Voldemort is gonna have you're head now!"
"I don't care!" Draco turned toward me and stood up. He ran at me and grabbed my hand.
He pulled me along quickly as we left the astronomy tower.
"Draco what are we doing?" I shouted at him as he was five steps in front of me.
"We are leaving, to someplace he'll never find us!"
"That's impossible Draco."
"No it's not."
We shouted back and fourth as we hurried down the stairs.
"Draco! Draco wait!"
He wouldn't slow down
"Draco!"
He continued to run down and he only stopped when I used a force that I never have before.
"Draco Lucius Malfoy you listen to me right now! You better haul that ass to a stop or I'll make you!"
Draco stopped in his tracks and turned to me.
"You just... yelled at me." He spoke softly.
I walked down to meet his gaze and I hugged him.
"I couldn't think of anything else to do." He looked sad and averted his gaze. I moved my eyes to look at him "Draco I'm worried about you. There's no where you can go where he won't find you. You're marked, Draco."
His eyes went even more dull then before and he sighed heavily.
He looked into my eyes and grabbed my hands.
"I just can't let you go." He whispered as his voice cracked.
"Draco, look at me." I lifted his chin and he sadly looked at me.
"It's okay. It's okay to let go. It's okay to say goodbye."
"No!" He protested.
"Yes Draco." I replied in a soft voice.
"N-no. You don't realize what you're saying! You're asking me to give up my happiness. You're asking me to give up half of my heart. You're asking me to leave behind my saviour and my guardian angel. You're asking me to give up everything."
"I'm not asking you to give up anything. But if you go, and you leave me behind, I'll have a chance of living. I'll have a chance of being able to hide. I'll have a chance of one day seeing you again."
Draco scoffed and wiped his eyes.
"When, though? When will I see you again?"
I shook my head and smiled at him glumly.
"I can't say." I was about to break down. My bottom lip quivered.
"That's what I don't like. This is a gamble. What if I let you go now and that's the last time I see you."
I started to cry as I wrapped my arms around his neck. I buried my face into his chest and ran my fingers through the short hair on the back of his head.
He buried his head into my neck and squeezed me hard.
"I don't want this feeling to end. I don't want to let go."
I pushed him away and kissed his cheek.
"I know you don't want to. I don't want to either. But it's the best for both of us."
I let go of his hand as I walked the last few stairs.
"Goodbye Draco."
He never said goodbye back.
I like to believe that he didn't want to say goodbye because that would give him hope for seeing me again. I'd like to believe that he still wants to see me.
Four years later and the dark lord was gone. Maybe one day fate will pull us back together.
