Chapter 6

Petra's POV

"My mobile telephone!"  I exclaimed, snatching the item from Ben's hand and examining it. "You know, you could just say phone-" "How did you get this? Did you have it the whole time?" I cut him off excitedly. Ben shoved his hand in his pockets and shrugged. "Uma had it, and I was able to swipe it when she wasn't looking." He explained. "I guess learning how to pickpocket came in handy, huh?"
I sat down on the bench and tried to recall how to use the phone. "Stealing from a pirate?" I said, sending him a quick smirk. "You ever thought about moving to Neverland? You'd fit right in." I scrolled through the list of other people who also owned mobile telephones that I could call, my 'contacts list'. "Ben, this could be our ticket out of here!" Ben walked over and sat by me, looking over my shoulder at the screen. His face fell. "I don't think so, there's no cell service on the Isle of The Lost." He said, pointing to the corner of the screen, which read 'No Service'.
Cell service, that sounded familiar. I'm sure I had heard Carlos talk about it before, about how he had somehow gained some when he was on the Isle of the Lost. I'd just have to recall how he did it. "I don't think that will be a problem." I said slowly, trying to remember exactly what Carlos had told me. Carlos was a tech genius, therefore he often talked about his inventions with me even though I had nothing to contribute to the topic. But my mother always taught me to listen, even if I wasn't interested in the conversation. Ben raised an eyebrow at me. "You sure?" He said. I nodded, shutting my eyes to focus.
Finally, I snapped my eyes open and held out my free hand to Ben. "Empty your pockets, we're going to need to make a phone call."

Carlos' POV

We'd been waiting for almost an hour now for Mal to return from Ursula's Chip Shop to meet Uma. Since then Jay, Evie and I have done nothing but just lay around Mal's hideout. That is, until Jay spoke up. "I'd never seen you that mad before." He said. I perked my head up to face him. Jay wasn't even looking at me, he was staring at the ceiling. "What?" I asked.
Jay finally turned his head and crossed his arms. "You heard me." He replied. "Back there with Harry? 6 months ago you couldn't even make eye contact with the guy without freaking out and now you're making threats that we all know you can't keep?" I was slightly offended at Jay's last comment, even though I knew it was true. I shrugged and sat up straighter. "Isn't that a good thing?" I said, not seeing the point. I toughened up, what's so bad about that?
"Sure, the confidence is great." Evie piped up, causing me to cock my head in her direction. "But I saw that look in your eyes, Carlos. And you know where else I've seen it?" I shook my head. "Your mother's eyes." She said. My breath hitched in my throat, as if the wind was knocked out of me. Did she just compare me to my mother? I wasn't anything like her, I couldn't be anything like her, I won't be anything like her. "I-I was just trying to stand up for Petra." I defended. Evie nodded and put a hand on my shoulder. "I know, I know. But there's a fine line between justice and vengeance. Just be careful not to cross it, okay?"
Before I could answer her, the sound of feet stomping up the steps of the hideout rang through the room. We all turned our attention to the door and saw Mal return from her trip. She groaned and threw herself onto the couch, her face contorted with frustration. My heart instantly lurched, wondering if something had happened to Petra and Ben. "Did you get them?" Jay asked, sitting down beside her. Mal sat up and rolled her eyes. "Does it look like I got them?" She spat angrily. "I didn't even see them, Uma has them in the brig of the Lost Revenge."
I couldn't imagine what a free spirit like Petra would do being trapped inside such a small space for so long. I don't know if I was more worried about her, or about Ben when Petra starts going through some cabin fever. "Did she at least tell you what she wanted with them?" Evie asked, a bit more softly then Jay. "Did she tell you anything at all?" Calming down a bit now, Mal nodded. "She said that she'd give them both back, if we brought the Fairy Godmother's Wand to her tomorrow. Otherwise she'd-" Mal looked up and caught my eye, she didn't have to finish for me to know what she meant. Tomorrow? That didn't leave much time at all.
"So what are we going to do?" Evie asked, standing to her feet with Mal doing the same. "We can't give Uma the wand, but we can't just abandon Ben and Petra either." Mal crossed her arms and moved some stray hair from out of her face. "You're right, we can't." Mal replied. "Which is why we need a plan." It was Jay's turn to speak up now. "If we're really facing up against Uma's entire crew, we'll be outnumbered in a fight. We'll have to trick them somehow." As they were talking, I was already ten steps ahead. I knew brute force wasn't the way to go, so I was brainstorming something to get them to think we're complying to their plan. If they think they've won, we'll have the upper hand. "My 3D printer!" I exclaimed. "I could make a copy of Fairy Godmother's Wand and we could give it to Uma!"
"But when Uma finds out it's fake, she'll throw Ben and Petra to the sharks without a second thought." Mal retaliated, but Evie was quick to pick up my argument. "We could cause a diversion, smoke bombs maybe? Then we could just grab Ben and Petra and book it. And the one place with a chemistry lab is-" "The Curl Up and Dye!" Mal finished, then gasped. "Speaking of which, you'll never guess who did my hair. Dizzy." Evie took a strand of Mal's hair and looked it over. "Little Dizzy Tremaine did this? It's so much lighter-" Oh no, I knew where this was going. Whenever Evie and Mal got started on something like this, they didn't stop. "Guys!" I interrupted, and both of them looked at me. I think they got the message pretty quick; there was way bigger things at stake here.
"You really think this will work?" Jay asked, sitting up straighter in his seat. Mal nodded confidently. "Of course it will." She said. "Because we're rotten." The three of us smiled, the plan was in action as we finished Mal's thought.
          "To the core!"

Petra's POV

"What next?" Ben asked, holding one of the few knick knacks we were able to acquire. I shut my eyes and concentrated as hard as I could on Carlos' words.

It was simple, really. I had to get as close to the barrier as possible, and create the tallest antenna that I could. Then once we had an electric current it somehow roped in some service! It doesn't match any of my scientific calculations, but magic works different there.

"We need to stick the antenna through the floorboards above us." I answered. "We need to get it as close to the barrier as we can." We were extremely fortunate that both Ben and I were avid collectors in random junk. In my jeans pockets, I managed to find some bobby pins and a couple of rubber bands. Ben had a spare battery for who knows what reason. Ben held our makeshift antenna carefully and glanced up at the boards above us. "But won't the pirates on deck be able to see it?" He asked. I nodded. "Which is why we need to be quick about this." I said. I held onto the battery that was hastily tied to one end of the antenna, and Ben held the other end and carefully wriggled it through the wooden planks. "Anything?" I glanced down at my mobile telephone and my heart fell. "Nothing." I answered. What had gone wrong? I did everything Carlos had told me.
Then it suddenly hit me. We needed an electric current, and the battery won't produce that by itself. It needs a boost. I dug deep into my pockets for anything that could help, anything. Suddenly my fingers grazed over something minuscule. Something most people would overlook, but I knew better. Carefully, I took the small object out of my pocket and examined it as it sat in my palm. Sure enough, there was one grain of pixie dust left. Not enough to make you fly or break through a magical barrier, but maybe enough to get some energy flowing. "Petra, hurry!" Ben hissed. I snapped out of my daze and nodded, dropping the grain onto the small battery.
Quick as a whistle, the antenna began to glitter like gold. I picked up the phone again. "Yes! One bar!" I exclaimed, though I wasn't entirely sure what it meant. Ben smiled slightly, but was still focused on keeping the antenna in place. "Good, now call someone!" He exclaimed.
I had to think faster now, the pirates would find out what we were up to soon. I'd need someone from Auradon, Carlos and the VKs were on the Isle so they won't have cell service either. I'd need someone brave enough to come here, someone I can count on. Luckily, the one person that came to mind is the only person in Auradon with pixie dust. My best friend, Taylor Bell. As a fairy she's practically made of pixie dust, and she always has my back. Except she doesn't have a cellphone, so I'd need someone that knows her so they can relay the message.
I picked up the phone and pressed the 'contacts' application. Ben had given me a quick overview of how to make a phone call before hand. I scrolled through the list organized in alphabetical order and stopped in the 'N' section. Only one contact was present, so I pressed the name and held it up to my ear.
           One ring.
           Two rings.
           Three.
            "Hello?"
"Nibs!" I practically screamed. It had worked! "Nibs, I've never been more happy to hear your voice!" I could hear muffled voices in the background, the other lost boys must have been with him. "Yeah, sorry it took me so long to answer. These phones are so complicated-" "Is Tay with you?" I asked quickly. A pause. "Uh, nope. She hasn't shown up to rehearsal yet." Rehearsal, I forgot all about it! We were going to practice for Cotillion since we were trying something new for our performance. "Speaking of which why aren't you here?" Nibs asked.
Muffled voices chimed in behind him, but I couldn't hear what they had said. I could only hear Nibs reaction. "She's where?" I heard him yell. "Why didn't you knuckleheads say anything before?" Nibs returned to me. "What in Walt Disney's name are you doing-" "It's not important right now!" I was rushing now, I could hear the pirates above us stomping around near our antenna. "I need you to tell Tay to come to the Isle of the Lost and find Carlos. Tell her that the king and I are trapped on a pirate ship and we need help." "A pirate ship!?" Nibs screamed, causing me to back the phone away from my ear. Before he could scold me more, I spoke again. "Just do it, and hurry!"
Suddenly, the line went dead and I glanced up at Ben. The antenna was destroyed, and Ben had a grim look on his face. "They found it." He said flatly. The stomping above us got louder, almost angrier. "Did you say what you needed to?" I nodded and put the phone in my back pocket. "Help is on the way, hopefully." I replied.
The door at the top of the stairs busted open once again, and descending the steps was a fuming Uma. When she reached our cell, she held out her outstretched palm, where 3 of our bobby pins sat. "Empty your pockets, both of you." She ordered. Ben and I exchanged glances, there was no way out of this one. We gave Uma our leftover supplies along with my cell phone. Uma held the device in her opposite hand and smirked. "A valiant effort." She mused, examining it. "But there's no cell service on the Isle." Ha, that's what she thinks. She put all our things in her own pocket and stalked back up the stairs. But before she left, she yelled at one of her crew mates through the open door.
          "Gil! You're on guard duty!"

Carlos' POV

"How long does this take?" Jay groaned as I continued to type more digits into my phone. "It seems like hours." I rolled my eyes. "We've been here for 10 minutes, Jay." I answered. "And if we want this to be realistic enough to fool Uma, it's going to take time."
Jay and I returned to Auradon to make a faux wand with my 3D printer, and let me tell you getting out of the Isle is just as hard as getting in. Not only did we have to drive the limo away without getting caught, but Mal had me drive her purple scooter back to Auradon for her. I'm not sure what I was more worried about; trying to sneak back into the school at midnight, or having everyone in Auradon see me rolling around wearing a pink helmet while Jay cruises down the road in a limo.
Since I obviously didn't have the real wand with me, I had to program it's design into my printer. But Jay wasn't exactly patient. He was currently sprawled on my bed with Dude, the only other living being with an attention span as short as his.
"Jay's right, you're taking a long time!" Dude said, wagging his tail. "Hey, think you can make some steak with that printer? I love me some steak." Jay grinned and sat up, facing the dog. "Hey, me too! Carlos, can you do that?" At this point, I decided ignoring both of them would be my best bet. Finally, after endless coding the printer spurred to life and began creating the base of the wand. I smiled and checked my watch. 3:30 AM. That left us just enough time to get back to the Isle in time to meet Mal and Evie.
I knew making the wand could take a while, so I was going to try and take a quick nap before going back to the Isle. But the second I laid down on the bed, a bright light zoomed in through the keyhole of our dorm and flitted around the room. "Ah! Bug!" Jay cried, jumping up and grabbing a pillow to swat at it. But I knew that it wasn't in fact a bug, but a fairy. I grabbed Jay by the arm before he could do anything rash. "Jay, calm down!" I said. "It's just Taylor!"
Taylor Bell was Petra's best friend and a roadie for The Neverlanders. Once Petra and I became a couple, I started helping out with the band and Taylor taught me the ropes. Even though I could never understand her. Fairies speak through the tone of jingling bells, and the only person who can understand it is Petra who was taught by her father, and the Fairy Godmother who was a fairy herself. So even though I couldn't understand what Taylor was trying to tell me as she flew in front of my nose, the angry expression on her face gave me a pretty good idea.
"What's she saying?" Jay asked. I simply shrugged. "I don't know, but she's upset." I said. Taylor rolled her eyes and crossed her arms, clearly annoyed with us. Suddenly, Dude started barking and pattered over to us. "She says that you two are buffoons for letting her best friend go off to The Isle of the Gross." He said happily. Both Jay and I looked down at him, baffled. But Taylor was nodding her head, so Dude's translation was correct. I was suddenly able to recall something Petra had told me about fairies. Since they are so fine tuned to nature, they have certain powers, and one of them is the ability to talk to animals.
I turned back to Taylor, who was still extremely upset and waiting for a response. "Look, we're sorry. We didn't know she was going there, she just up and left without saying anything!" I explained. Jay scoffed and backed away. "We?" He said. "This is all you, lover boy. Keep me out of it." Taylor jingled again and took a seat on the bedpost. I asked Dude what she said. "She says that both of you are idiots either way, and that she would kick your butt if Petra didn't care about you so much." Dude said. Jay cockily ran a hand through his hair. "Aww, Petra cares about us?" He mused. I crossed my arms and raised an eyebrow. "I thought you said this was all me?" I said.
"She also wants to know when we're leaving to go get Petra, and if any of you could scratch my belly." Dude wagged his tail happily as Jay and I furrowed our eyebrows at him. "Well, she didn't say that last part." Dude finally gave in. "But a belly rub would be great right now!" "Taylor, you can't come with us." Jay said, ignoring Dude. "The Isle is dangerous-" "You're going to the Isle?" A new voice piped up from the door way.
We all turned around and saw Chad Charming leaning on the door frame. "What do you want Chad?" I said in a flat, bored tone. Chad sauntered his way around the room. "I just needed to use your 3D printer to finish making my Chad figurine." He held up a small action figure missing a head. "But I see you're already using it." Chad looked inside the printer in confusion. "Wait, are you guys making Fairy Godmother's wand?" He asked, looking between the three of us. "What are you guys doing?"
"Ben and Petra have been captured!" Dude shouted. I turned around and gave him a glare. "You should have given me a belly rub." He said in response. I mentally face palmed and turned back to an awe struck Chad. "Petra Pan's been captured?" He asked. "No, no, no wait. The King has been captured?" Jay, Taylor, and I exchanged worried looks. "Chad, you can't tell anyone." Jay said, stepping up to the plate. But Chad shook his head and smiled. "Why would I?" He said. He thought for a moment before he continued. "Hey, not that I want anything to happen to Ben. But if something did, do you think they'd consider a different, more charming royal to take the throne?" I held back an eye roll and pointed at the door. "Out, and leave the key." I ordered, holding out my hand.
Chad didn't seem in the mood to argue, so he sighed and handed me the key before leaving the room without another word. A few minutes later, the printer acknowledged that the wand was finished. I opened the compartment and held the finished product in my hand. "It looks exactly like the real thing." Jay commented. I nodded in agreement. "Yep, which means we need to head back."
Taylor said something again, and even though Dude was still mad at me he translated. "She said she's going to get her things, and then she'll be ready to leave." I knew from experience how stubborn Taylor was, I always assumed that's where Petra got her head-strength from. We were also on an extreme time crunch, and arguing with someone you can't even understand would be useless. Jay seemed to read my mind. "We'll meet you in the limo out front in about twenty minutes." He said. Taylor smiled and nodded, zipping out of the room through the way she came in.
"Twenty minutes?" I asked. "Why would we need twenty minutes when it takes about two to walk down to the limo?" Jay smirked as he slipped on his jacket. "Because we need to make a quick supply run." He explained. "We can't fight a crew full of pirates unarmed, can we?"
It didn't take long for me to realize that Jay was leading us to the Fencing arena. "We're going in with swords?" I questioned. "Jay, they're pirates. They've used swords their whole lives!" Jay rolled his eyes and leaned against the door. "Fair enough, but we also have you, Ben, and I who are all on the fencing team and the daughter of Peter Pan on our side." "That's still only 4 assets." I countered. "Uma's crew is huge, we'll still be outnumbered!"
All of a sudden, Jay practically exploded. "You think I don't know that!?" He yelled, his face turning red. "You think I don't know the odds are against us? I may not be the brains of the group, but I know for a fact that if we sit here and list out all the things that could go wrong two of our closest friends will die, Carlos. Their blood will be on our hands. And I don't know about you, but I would rather die fighting an uphill battle then live thinking we never had a chance. So can you stop calculating everything that could go wrong and focus on what will go right?"
I hadn't really thought about what Jay was thinking throughout this whole dilemma. Ben and Petra were his friends too, and here I was shutting down every one of his ideas to get them back. But before I could reply, someone else's voice called us from across campus.
"Jay! Carlos!" Lonnie yelled, making her way across the lawn and toward where Jay and I stood. Panic registered on both of our faces. "Just play along." Jay muttered, much calmer then he was a moment before.
Lonnie arrived with a large bag slung across her back. "Lonnie!" Jay said with a smile. "Out for some late night training I assume?" "I know what you guys are up to." She said immediately. "And I'm coming with you." Jay and I exchanged looks again. She couldn't possibly know the plan, could she? "'Up to?'" Jay continued. "Do tell, what do you think we're 'up to'?" Lonnie crossed her arms smugly. "You're going to the Isle of the Lost to rescue Ben and Petra." She replied.
At this point, both Jay and I knew we had been foiled. "How did you know?" I asked, wanting to make sure no one else knew what was going on. Lonnie set down her backpack and threw her hair behind her shoulder. "I overheard you guys talking earlier in the dorms." She explained. "And I want to help."
Both Jay and I struggled to find the words to tell Lonnie that she really didn't want to go to the Isle of the Lost. "Well, the thing is-" "It's super dangerous-" "And it smells awful-" "And there's dirt everywhere-" As Jay and I stuttered out every excuse we could think of, Lonnie simply rolled her eyes and opened up the backpack. Inside, the silver glint of multiple blades shimmered in the moonlight. Jay and I stopped. "I'll make this more simple for you." Lonnie stated, her hands on her hips and a stern expression on her face. "Either let me go with you or not only will I not give you the swords, but I'll tell Fairy Godmother what you're up to."
It wasn't that we didn't want Lonnie coming with us, but we already brought enough people to the Isle that didn't belong there. The last thing we needed was to bring even more. But I knew from experience how good Lonnie was with a sword, if it came down to it she could definitely defend herself. But then again, I thought the same thing about Petra and she's stuck in the brig of The Lost Revenge. I looked over at Jay for his final decision, but I already knew what he was going to say. He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. "Fine, fine! You can come." He said, closing the backpack and picking up the swords. "Let's just go before we have the whole school tagging along with us."
Once we had everything we needed in the back of the limo, Taylor returned no longer in her pajamas but normal street clothes with her blonde hair pulled back as if she was ready for a fight. We climbed in the limo and Jay went down the list to make sure we had everything.
"Wand?"
"Check."
"Swords?"
"Check."
"Traveling flea circus?"
"Jay!"
"I'm joking! Kind of."
Soon after we began making our way back to the Isle, and let me tell you I've never seen anyone quite as excited to go to an island full of villains as Lonnie. To her it was some big adventure. We hadn't brought Dude with us, so I couldn't tell what Taylor was saying. But from her tone and the slight red glow surrounding her I could tell she was angry. Whether it was because her best friend had been kidnapped or because she was the only one in the limo that couldn't contribute to the conversation, I don't know. But I assume it was the former.
The sun was beginning to come up, we'd been awake all night. Of course with all that was going on no one was tired, but it did mean that we were running out of time. Mal and Evie said they would be done with the smoke bombs by the time we got back, so all we could do now was wait.
