Skies, Chapter Thirty Two - Kansen [観戦]
The so called task at hand was explained to Amaya in detail by Ritsu as she trudged into the girls changerooms to don her outfit of doom.
Tagawa Kokona, who Amaya had dubbed as Toadsworth for the rest of her life, had once been a friendly classmate of Kataoka Megu's last year until a particular incident took place.
The incident was fairly simple to understand, at least to Amaya with her cynical take on the girl.
The girl through vanity asked Kataoka with her swimming repute to give her lessons, so she wouldn't look bad in front of a desired boy on a beach trip during summer. It turned out that Toadsworth had ended up just taking one lesson and had brushed everything off afterwards once she got a big head about it.
The end result was that Toadsworth of course ended up almost drowning and had to be rescued on the said beach-trip, and had been using this so called trauma as emotional blackmail to force Kataoka to tutuor her at the drop of a hat. The pressure of having to deal with all that had Kataoka neglect her own studies, which was apparently how she ended up in Class 3-E - Which was a surprise, even to Amaya.
Kataoka was a very smart and capable girl, but of course she was also very particular about following rules, so Amaya wouldn't have expected Kataoka to end up here for breaking school rules, like Karma and herself.
And Koro-sensei's grand idea to fix the problem?
Kidnap Toadsworth while she slept in her bed, have her believe she's having a dream about fish-people teaching her how to swim when in fact, its really a Government Secret and his students forcing her to learn.
Apparently that would free Kataoka from Toadsworth's chains.
The idea of freeing the Class Rep from such a slimey girl was all good and well in Amaya's opinion, and she'd gladly help out on any other day.
Except when it came to water.
It was through this explanation of Ritsu's that Amaya guessed Koro-sensei decided to throw her into the mix as well, being another student in Kunugigaoka with trouble to do with water.
Amaya sucked in a slow breath as she finished pulling on her swimming costume, her brow furrowed as she looked down at herself.
Her particular swimming costume was a simple setup of a teal coloured onepiece with a small skirting in purple that seemed more asthetic than useful, plus the scaled, webbed socks for her arms and legs. The other pieces that Nagisa and Kayano were wearing weren't here for her to put on, so she guessed it was something they were going to put on for her - Presumably it was a difficult thing to secure in place for running around in water.
So, with a more suitable update on the situation than if Koro-sensei had bothered to explain it to her, and dressed in her drowning costume, Amaya wandered back into the classroom.
There was no sign of Koro-sensei just yet, but presumably Ritsu would let them know when he'd successfully kidnapped a sleeping Toadsworth.
Amaya slid open the door of the classroom awkwardly, her webbed accessories making it rather difficult to properly grip anything, though she knew it wouldn't really matter over at the pool.
Kataoka had arrived fully dressed while Amaya had been getting changed, dressed in a skirt with a sleeveless top, plus her webbed socks for her arms and legs.
Further to that, her hair was down and styled differently, to the point where Amaya hadn't quite recognized her at first.
'Oh, and Amaya-san's here, too.' Nagisa explained to Kataoka, who had looked over in surprise.
'Katsuragi-san? You got roped into--' Kataoka had begun, however a horrified shriek from Kayano had cut her off.
The petit girl was pointing at Amaya like there was something very, very wrong with her, and she wore an expression that looked rather affronted - Insulted, perhaps?
'What's wrong, Kayano-san?' Kataoka asked curiously, however Nagisa had taken one look at Amaya and sighed.
'You traitor!' Kayano yelled across the room. 'Why are you suddenly a big-boober, too!?'
Oh ... right.
Amaya recalled that one problem Kayano seemed to have with Irina when she arrived, which was merely the size of her breasts, and all she could do was sigh.
'Don't worry, I hate them, too.' Was Amaya's response.
And it actually seemed to stump Kayano - She adopted a confused look, and finally lowered her arm after a few seconds thought.
It appeared she couldn't find any response to give.
Though Amaya found herself a little bit bothered by that remark - Yes, she was a little top-heavy, which was why she always strapped her chest down, but she didn't think she was that big.
Not that Amaya went around looking at peoples chests all the time, but she felt fairly certain that a few of the others in class were the same, or bigger even.
'Update from Koro-sensei!' Ritsu chimed in all of a sudden, her terminal pivoting just a little to face the four students standing in the room. 'Tagawa-san has just been captured, he will arrive at the pool with her in approximately five minutes.'
'Wow, five minutes?' Kayano spoke up in surprise.
'I think he's traveling extra slow so she doesn't wake up on the way here...' Was Nagisas response.
Well, that made sense.
'In that case, we'd better help you get the rest of your costume on, Katsuragi-san.' Kataoka announced from her place next to Ritsu, lifting a pair of fins attached to a white ribbon from the table in front of Ritsu's terminal.
'Oh! Good idea.' Nagisa agreed as he fished a scaled scarf from the table, too.
It was here that Amaya found herself at the whims of her present classmates, who rearranged her hair, wove the ribbons in to keep the fins in place, and basically made sure she was in as tidy a costume as the three of them were.
Even Ritsu had adopted a fish-themed swimming costume for the occasion, matching more similar to Kayano's with a skirt in a dark blue and lavendar.
And then, just as the four students stepped out of the classroom building to head for the pool, Amaya caught sight of Koro-sensei swooping down gradually towards the woods.
What was particularly amazing to Amaya was the fact that he hadn't just grabbed Toadsworth on her own, but he was carying her, bed and all, and she was still snoring away.
That was quite a feat for Koro-sensei to fly so slow, while carying a rather heavy-looking bed at the same time.
Although he had carried three students all the way to Hawaii and back, so maybe Koro-sensei could carry more than he looked capable of?
The summer heat had begun to wear off, yet it was still warm.
It felt particularly strange to be here on her own with Kayano, Nagisa and Kataoka, but even moreso for it to be the late hours of night, no less.
Yet she didn't dare voice it - Just a glance at Kataoka's pensive expression was all Amaya needed to decide that maybe the Class Rep felt it was a little strange too.
The layout of the pool had been changed just a little, Amaya found as they arrived. The swimming lanes and diving blocks had been removed, as had the diving board at the opposite end. Aside from two poolside chairs, every shred of poolside accessories had been removed.
All that remained was Toadsworth's bed set on the rockery on the opposite side of the pool, with the girl in mention still snoring away comfortably.
In fact, it looked like it might be a while before she'd eventually wake up.
'Well now, since everyone is here, let us go over our plan of attack!' Koro-sensei announced at the sight of Nagisa and Kayano coming to a stop a few paces in front of him, Kataoka a few paces behind them.
Amaya stood even further back from everyone in the hopes that Koro-sensei might overlook her.
Wishful thinking of course.
Koro-sensei explained, strategized, and wriggled, and before long he donned a large fish costume over the top of his red and white striped swimwear, as well as a pair of goggles and fish-themed hat. The plan was for both Koro-sensei and Kataoka to teach Toadsworth themselves, while Nagisa, Kayano and Amaya were supposed to be a supporting cast to help set the scene.
They in fact had to do that right off the word go.
Until the girl Amaya had dubbed as Toadsworth woke up, they were to stay here and frolick around in the water - Or rather, that was the plan. Once Toadsworth woke up, the pool became Koro-sensei and Kataoka's area, and the three of them could step out and watch from the sidelines.
Of course, Amaya made no plans of even touching the water - Sitting on the sidelines that afternoon was almost as much as she could handle.
It took no less than half an hour for Toadsworth to show signs of waking up, Amaya surmised as she watched the havoc around her.
So after insisting rather enthusiastically that the four students should let Koro-sensei take a picture of them in their well-made swimming costumes, everything moved into preparation phase.
Kataoka was sitting off to the side, seeming to be talking with Koro-sensei about something, and both Kayano and Nagisa were playing in the water, throwing water at each other and just laughing.
Amaya had taken to sitting beneath one of the trees along the edge of the water nearest the colourful duo - Every time she so much as made a move to look towards the classroom building, Koro-sensei looked over at her as if checking what she was doing.
So she'd decided she may as well set her phone up on one of the nearby rocks so that Ritsu could see through the front camera, hidden, but able to see the whole pool and ledges regardless - She had also asked Ritsu to save a copy of the footage on her phone so she could glance over it, later.
It might come in handy later, if everyone else wanted to do this fancy water-assassination she suspected was in the works.
It was a few seconds later when Koro-sensei seemed to cut himself off mid-sentence - Amaya noticed that he'd thrown himself over to go lie on one of the poolside chairs.
It was this second that Toadsworth seemed to open her eyes.
And then, she threw herself upright into a sitting position and seemed to stare out ot the scene in front of her.
'Where ... am I?' She seemed to mutter, her gaze tracing the most prominent parts of the scenery around her.
It appeared that this was where Kataoka was supposed to make her presence known - The Class Rep seemed to hesitate for a few seconds, before she began to walk up behind the bewildered girl.
'You're awake.' She spoke up, an edge of discomfort in her voice. 'Umm ... welcome to Fishland! Lets go for a swim!'
Toadsworth seemed to blink in surprise, though confusion was evident in her gaze.
'You look an awful lot like Megu-Megu...' She spoke in response.
'Nope ... never heard of her.' Was Kataoka's strained response as she turned her head away. 'I'm ... Fish-Fish...'
'That sounds like a restaurant!' The dark-featured girl shouted in response.
Koro-sensei had rushed up to Kataoka at this point, seeming to frantically whisper something to the Class Rep as Nagisa and Kayano stopped their play to turn towards the commotion.
'I'm Fish-boy!' Nagisa introduced himself with a smile, stopping along with Kayano to turn towards Toadsworth.
'And I am Fish-girl!' Kayano added with an adorable-looking smile.
'You're a fish ... But you need a Floating Ring?!' Toadsworth exclaimed in response.
'And I am Fish King.' Koro-sensei added with great conviction, crossing his arm-tentacles as he turned to face Toadsworth. 'The Greatest Octopus in the world, able to swim any river and ocean!'
'You're an Octopus! Not a fish!'
Amaya was certain that was some form of cop-out, but for the sake of the plan, she wasn't going to draw attention to it..
Though of course, Koro-sensei's strange appearances were probably the only thing going for them - He clearly wasn't human, so that would help keep Toadsworth convinced that this was a dream.
She probably wouldn't buy this whole setup any other time.
'Well, shall we begin?' Koro-sensei suggested as he slithered his way to Toadsworth.
'Wait a second!' Toadsworth exclaimed, shrugging away from Koro-sensei as she jabbed an arm in Amaya's direction. 'You've all told me who you are, but who is that?!'
The word that used in reference to her reminded her of Yuta, and she found herself disliking it immediately.
Though she knew it was merely a coincidence.
'Shark-bait.' Was Amaya's immediate response, struggling, but succeeding to cast Toadsworth a sugar-sweet smile. 'Its a pleasure to meet you!'
'That's surprisingly morbid!'
No, its a reference to a western movie Reiko watched a few hundred times, but either which way.
Amaya kept her forced smile in place, though she didn't make a move to join Nagisa and Kayano - She'd probably fall over the moment she tried.
'Nothing gets by you ... You'd make a good 'Straight Man' in a Comedy Duo.' Koro-sensei announced enthusiastically as he went along and tied Toadsworth's hair back for her. 'That's enough for your warm-up.'
Amaya's smile faltered a little as she saw Koro-sensei then straighten up all of a sudden.
'And now, to stretch and change!' He announced as he grabbed hold of Toadsworth to put her through the motions of before-swimming stretches.
It all looked so bizarre to Amaya, who remained seated with a perturbed look across her face.
Flailing, affronted, Toadsworth was then switched into the swimming uniform for Kunugigaoka with a sudden Snap of elastic, and then Koro-sensei had basically kicked her into the pool a second later with an announcement of 'Into the water with you!', earning a scream from Toadsworth as she fell inelegantly.
'W-water?!' She shrieked like a banshee, struggling to keep her head above the water.
In spite of the rather haphazard flailing and screaming, Toadsworth was handling it better than Amaya would.
'Calm down Kokona! Its shallow enough to stand, here!' Kataoka shouted as she threw herself into the water. 'You want to learn to swim, right? Why don't you at least give it a try!'
'I ... I don't need to swim! I don't need to do anything but act cute!' Toadsworth yelled in response, turning to round upon Kataoka in a spoiled fit. 'All I have to say is, "I can't swim"... and the girl who looks like you will do whatever I tell her to do!'
She was far more spoiled than Amaya had even thought, which was a surprise.
But, it was already clear Koro-sensei wasn't going to let her have her own way.
'Okay, okay... Just keep walking.' Kataoka let out a sigh and began to push Toadsworth along. 'Its a good way to warm up and get used to the water.'
'Hey... You're just a fish! You have no right to treat me like this!'
Oh how wrong this girl was, though Amaya was in no position to correct her.
'By the way, Koro ... No, I mean Fish King.' Nagisa had begun, turning his attention to Koro-sensei, who was watching Kataoka push Toadsworth along in the water. 'Aren't you going to swim, too?'
Koro-sensei seemed to flinch all of a sudden, before he nervously turned his head away.
'Um... Nah. I just came to sunbathe by the pool, today.'
'It's Midnight.' Nagisa was quick to correct him. 'And you can't teach her how to swim without getting into the water.'
It was clear from how insistent Nagisa was that he was up to something, though Amaya wasn't in the right mindset to speculate as to what it could be.
She hugged her knees closer to her chest, keeping her gaze on Nagisa and a nervous looking Koro-sensei in order to avoid looking at the water.
Though, with a sudden remark of 'You're right', Koro-sensei had thrown himself straight into the middle of the pool, startling Kataoka along with everyone else.
'What the ...?' Was Kayano's confused response.
'Well then, lets start with the basics - The Glide.' Koro-sensei announced.
It was this very second that Amaya almost facepalmed.
Koro-sensei in all his strange behavior, was dressed in a very realistic Fish-suit, where he legitimately looked like a giant fish with his face stuck on the front.
'This is my Koro-sensei Koi Kostume Wetsuit!' Koro-sensei announced with great enthusiasm. 'It is entirely waterproof, and can withstand my mach swimming!'
Oh dear god, he was already forgetting to stay in character ...
Did he forget he was supposed to stay human colours while he was in the family restaurant earlier, too?!
'Let me show you a variety of swimming techniques.' Koro-sensei announced, and then in the blink of an eye, he'd started swishing the tail of his Koi Costume so fast he was running laps of the pool repeatedly in less than a second.
By three seconds, the water of the whole pool had started spinning so much that it turned into a whirlpool.
And of course, Toadsworth was being pulled along with the motions of the whirlpool, a shriek escaping her as she struggled to stand her ground.
It was right here that Amaya realized just why Koro-sensei didn't teach PE as well as everything else.
He was not only unsuitable, but he had the mentality to just go overboard with it.
In fact, she even considered the idea that he was purposefully going crazy with the mach-speed for some reason.
He wasn't stupid - Easy for people like Karma to manipulate, but not stupid at all.
If there was a reason to do so, Koro-sensei would do so without hesitation.
'Don't panic Kokona! The flow around the edge isn't that fast!' Kataoka was quick to help a panicking Toadsworth.
Toadsworth continued to struggle against the water, forcing Kataoka to take a more direct move in helping her.
'Okay! Here's how you need to swim in the sea!' Kataoka began to instruct, swimming alongside the distraught girl with obvious ease, even though she was in the stronger parts of the tide. 'The basics are the same as swimming in a pool! Feel the water pushing back on the palm of your hand and swim rhythmically.'
Ah, there was a possible reason for Koro-sensei to volunteer to cause such havoc right there - To create a turbulent body of water that instills desperate learning.
Toadsworth wasn't one of Class-E, so of course, she didn't fit under the umbrella of protection the Government had negotiated with Koro-sensei.
But of course, Koro-sensei wouldn't exactly harm her, he would just stress her to the point of learning before dawn.
'Using a Koi Costume isn't fair, King Fish!' Amaya faintly heard Nagisa yell at Koro-sensei, drawing her attention back from the alarmingly fast whirlpool.
'That's right! We wanted to see if you could get in the water without it!' Kagano yelled in agreement.
It was a split second later that Koro-sensei's Koi costume had been flung into Nagisa's arms, no Koro-sensei in sight.
'Why of course I can!' Was Koro-sensei's response.
As Amaya turned her head to look where Koro-sensei's voice had come from, she found herself staring in disbelief at first.
At least until she caught the tiniest glimpse of water being thrown.
And then all she could honestly do was facepalm.
Yes, Koro-sensei was in the pool, and of course he was without his Koi costume like he said.
But utilizing his mach-speed, he was basically scooping all the water aside and throwing it back to the outside of the pool so fast rip-tides were forming.
And again, Toadsworth screamed as she was once again dragged across the pool with the currents of the water, no thanks to Koro-sensei.
Likely, this was part of the octopus' plans, too.
Amaya let out a breath as she decided she'd had enough - It looked like Koro-sensei had his tentacles full with trying to keep himself from getting wet like that.
She unwrapped her arms from around her knees, gingerly lifting herself to her feet so she wouldn't fall in.
It looked like Toadsworth really was getting the hang of swimming, and it wasn't like Amaya was going to be any good.
She was already at her limit with all this water - She could last the rest of her life without it.
Though a sudden call stopped her in her tracks.
'SHARK-BAIT!' Koro-sensei shouted at her from in the water, causing Amaya to groan as she turned her head in response. 'Sit back down! Sensei has not forgotten about you!'
Amaya cast the octopus a rather strained smile.
'What are you talking about, Fish-King? Who is Sensei?' Amaya responded, earning a flinch from Koro-sensei.
Yep, he'd forgotten all about staying in character.
Though she got the point, all the same.
With a dejected sigh, Amaya sat herself down on the rockery a considerably further distance from the water, deciding that she had no choice but to wait out this hell - If she was going to do so without freaking out, it had to be further away.
Minutes turned into hours, with Amaya sitting there with her head turned away from the water, and then when Toadsworth had apparently mastered swimming to Koro-sensei's rather hypocritical standards, she basically passed out the moment she'd slumped onto dry land.
It was just after 4am by this point.
And Koro-sensei had just gotten Toadsworth back into the exact same condition as she'd been in when he'd kidnapped her from home.
'Nurufufufu! This should work out perfectly.' Koro-sensei announced as he scooped Kokona up and set her back in bed. 'Kataoka-san, please spectate Tagawa-san's PE class during fourth period - That should complete the finishing touches of Sensei's plan.'
'O-okay.' Kataoka agreed, though she seemed a little uncertain.
'And Sensei will go take Tagawa-san home now.' Koro-sensei remarked, his tentacles reaching around to gently lift Toadsworth's bed off the rocky ground. 'Its a shame it took so long for Tagawa-san to learn to swim, Sensei had hoped to include Amaya-san in a lesson as well.'
Nagisa cast Amaya a sympathetic look, though Amaya made a point of not returning it in case Koro-sensei took note of it.
But there was one thing she had to admit to herself, even though she really didn't want to.
She was immediately very thankful that Toadsworth had kicked such a fuss in the beginning, though she would never tell the toad-like girl.
It looked like she'd saved Amaya from being forced into the water, today.
'In any case, that was excellent work, everyone. If you will wait, Sensei will take you all home, as well.'
'Sure.' Nagisa agreed, with Kayano nodding her head in agreement.
With that, Koro-sensei took off into the skies at a much slower speed than they were all used to.
Amaya watched with baited breath, utilizing the very second Koro-sensei had disappeared from sight to scramble to her feet.
She'd heard Kataoka begin to speak up in surprise, however Amaya had snatched up her phone and took off running before she'd managed to get a word out.
Her composure wouldn't last any longer, not when she had an escape opportunity, and both Nagisa and Kayano would know why she was running off, too.
Throwing herself into the changerooms to get back into her original clothes, Amaya bundled made quick work of it all.
She wanted to make her move back home before Koro-sensei got back - She didn't want to deal with anyone right now.
With the swimming costume tucked safely under her arm, Amaya made her escape.
She passed by Nagisa, who didn't look all that surprised to see her running off, her head hung as she kept watch of her feet.
Down the mountain trail, through the outside of Kunugigaoka's main campus, and to the train station Amaya ran, without a slip or accident rearing its ugly head.
And by the time she had reached home, it was close to Amaya's preferred time for morning routines.
She fumbled with her keys at the door, her hands trembling as she tried desperately to let herself inside.
She vowed from now on to make certain every window was locked at all times, as well as the front door - Though that in and of itself wouldn't stop Koro-sensei from getting inside if he was determined, since he had Okuda make that liquify tonic for him.
He could just slime right through the gap in the door, if he really wanted to.
Finally, after what felt like minutes of fumbling, she finally got the door open.
And she found that she was not face to face with a dark, empty apartment.
Standing against the wall just a few meters away where she certainly couldn't miss him was Karma, a sleepy frown across his face as he turned his head to look at Amaya. The lights of the living room were on, and the light of the apartment building corridor illuminated the frustration written across his face.
Additionally, she could see that he had been asleep until very recently - the right side of his hair was messy and sticking up, and when she'd opened the door, he had been rubbing sleep out of his eyes.
Needless to say, the last thing Amaya had expected was to come back to her apartment and find him standing there.
'W-what are you doing here...?' Amaya managed to ask, inwardly wincing as her voice wavered.
She could immediately tell that he was annoyed, so his patience was probably non-existent right now.
'I got a call from Nagisa-kun.' He responded, a curt edge to his words as he continued to frown at Amaya. 'He told me to come check you were okay.'
At that remark, Amaya found her words had slipped from her grasp.
And all she could do was hang her head as she said 'Oh ...'
She felt the frown upon her darken a little.
He seemed particularly sour, like there was something that greatly annoyed him about the situation - Well, more than the fact that he'd been woken up in the early hours of the morning.
She couldn't understand what it could have been, though.
Though after a few seconds, she heard him click his tongue as he seemed to look away from her.
'Care to explain what happened?' He shot at her, his words dripping with frustration.
She hesitated, gnawing on her bottom lip as she struggled to find her words.
'K-Koro-sensei ... had me help with something...'
'And?'
Amaya let out a breath as she looked furtively away.
Though she didn't have an opportunity to say anything as something suddenly crashed into the window of the living room.
'AMAYA-SAN! WHY DID YOU RUN OFF WHILE I WAS GONE?!' Koro-sensei yelled, his face a paler version of his usual yellow as he slid the window open, drawing both Amaya's and Karma's attention immediately. 'SENSEI THOUGHT YOU'D FALLEN INTO THE POOL AND DRO-- ... NYUUWAH!?'
It was at this second that he seemed to notice Karma standing there in the shadowed part of the hallway, and cut his words off with a familiar yelp.
The Octopus seemed to stand there gasping like a fish out of water, and it appeared his ability to think at Mach 20 had vanished completely from his grasp.
Amaya let out a breath as she heard movement from the back parts of the apartment, a sign that Koro-sensei had of course managed to wake Reiko up with such a shrill exclamation.
And probably everyone else in the whole apartment building, too.
'I appear to have interrupted something ...' Koro-sensei hedged, seeming like he really wanted to be anywhere else but here. 'S-Sensei will be going now!'
And with that, Koro-sensei made a frantic retreat, closing the window behind him, leaving the two of them standing there in silence.
Such a dramatic octopus, Koro-sensei was.
But unfortunately, it was likely he'd just gotten Amaya in even more trouble.
Well ... if Karma hadn't of known what the situation basically was, then he did now.
The silence between them was uncomfortable, though it might have just been uncomfortable for her.
Though, Karma eventually let out a breath as he looked at Amaya once again.
'Are you going to stand there all morning?' He questioned, bluntly.
Hesitantly, deciding that things couldn't really get much worse, Amaya hesitantly stepped inside, and shut the door.
About the only thing that really ran through her head at this point was the fact that she had school in less than four hours, and all she wanted to do was curl up in a corner and sulk for the rest of her conscious time.
It had been a very, very long day.

Haha, you guys should thank dinosaurgrl and anna_tulloch for sweet-talking me into submitting this today xD I had actually considered making you all wait until next weeks Friday, since some people have started expecting more frequent updates when they really shouldn't, haha. I'll clarify the way I update now for everyone:
Loki-Roki's updating rule of thumb:
ONE guaranteed update a week submitted at the very latest on Friday. If there has been an update the six days before Friday, then please do not expect another guaranteed chapter until the following Friday. The reason for such a loose method of regular updating is because I have insomnia, so there are times that I might update sooner because I can't sleep. But there are also times where I don't type because I work as well, or I have other commitments occur. This is why.
Any ADDITIONAL updates for that week (Like this update and the update just been) is considered a BONUS. I might have had extra time to type outside of work, or I couldn't sleep again and managed to get a chapter done. Please do not get used to having more than one update a week because my updating is entirely dependent on both my workload and whether I can actually manage more than a few hours of sleep in a couple of days.
Kansen - In this instance translates as Spectate, which is written as 観戦 in Japanese
All the best, guys <3
Loki-Roki~!
