Oceans, Chapter Thirty Nine - Konton [混沌]
A Transfer Student will be joining you tomorrow. Their looks may surprise you, but try not to make a big deal out of it.
- Karasuma
'What the hell is this!?' Amaya muttered under her breath as she stared at the email that was displayed on the screen of her just-charged phone.
'An email, clearly.' Karma remarked.
'Whoa, I never would've guessed!' Amaya spoke with dramatic sarcasm, lifting her gaze to frown at Karma.
He was smirking despite not looking at her face - He instead has his attention on the mess of torn flesh that was the space of skin between her left shoulder and left elbow.
Her whole damn arm was throbbing with pain, and it didn't help that Karma was in the middle of inspecting the rather painful looking injury - Every time he so much as touched the edge of intact skin right next to a tear, it sent sharp, agonizing jolts of pain tearing up her arm.
It wasn't just her being dramatic either - despite the fact that he denied it, Amaya had seen the small wince that flashed across Karma's face when he first laid eyes on the unbandaged injury just ten minutes ago.
To have Karma of all people wince at the sight of an injury was sign enough that it looked quite painful.
But he was the one that pestered her into letting him have a look at her injury.
That was after she'd spent all night being shocked awake by the pain every time she'd go to roll onto her stomach like she normally would in her sleep.
'Don't deafen me.' Karma remarked all of a sudden.
'Huh?' Amaya blinked in surprise as she saw a drenched cloth in one of his hands. The scent of chemical antiseptic came to Amaya's notice at that very moment
And then Karma pressed the cloth firmly over the torn flesh of her arm before she could say a word.
Excruciating, burning pain overcame her whole arm, threatening to rip a scream of pain from her lips, however she'd managed to grit her teeth and slap her free hand over her mouth to stop herself in case she was about to.
It was only when he'd lifted the cloth away from her arm a good ten seconds later that the pain began to slowly fade.
'Owww, that hurt!' Amaya whimpered, blinking away the tears that had welled up in the corners of her eyes.
'There'd be a problem if that didn't hurt, you know.' He replied in a rather taunting manner as he discarded the cloth onto the table.
Of course, that didn't mean she missed the soft edge to his tone of voice.
'Yeah, yeah.' Amaya sighed as she tore her gaze away from him in preference of looking down at her phone, which she'd dropped onto the couch when Karma'd attacked her arm with antiseptic.
A transfer student, huh? And they were coming to Class E today, apparently.
And their appearances might surprise people.
Amaya guessed that since their Teacher's appearances were certain to surprise people, she shouldn't be surprised if a miniature Koro-sensei walked in at some point.
She honestly doubted it, but when Karasuma says something to that extent, Amaya wasn't going to expect anything normal.
Or anyone normal looking, for that matter.
'Owww! What the--?!' Amaya yelped out as pain suddenly shot through her arm again, causing her to snap her gaze to the cause of her current misery.
She found Karma shaking his head in annoyance, wrapping her arm up for her firmly in bandages.
'Karma, that really hurts!' Amaya whined for what she felt was probably the tenth time since he'd started tending to her arm, drawing a frown from him with little effort.
'Stop being dramatic, Amay.'
'I'm not being dramatic, you big meanie!' Amaya complained, causing Karma to frown even more.
He didn't look at her, however his bandaging started to get even tighter.
'Owww! Okay okay I'm sorry! I'm being dramatic!' Amaya whimpered as burning pain began to throb through her arm.
In response, Karma smirked and loosened the pressure of the bandages back to that barely comfortable firmness before he pinned them off.
Amaya took her arm back quickly, a teary look in place as she stared up at the evil boy.
'You're still mean!' Amaya complained, causing Karma to snicker at her.
'You're awfully mean yourself, Amay.' Karma drawled as he lifted himself to his feet, gathering up the old bandages and the wrappers from the plasters he'd applied to her various injuries as Amaya looked up at him suspiciously. 'After I cooked dinner for you and even spent the night just to keep you company, you're calling me mean?'
He sighed all dramatically as he walked over to the waste-bin, shaking his head in mock dismay.
'Your fake sadness is riveting.' Amaya remarked with great sarcasm, a frown touching her face as she watched him. 'And you just stayed up all night subjecting me to cheesy superhero movies! Don't gimme that crap about how you did it all for me!'
'That doesn't matter.' Karma dismissed her point immediately, a particularly evil grin creeping across his face as he grabbed something from the counter, and began to make his way back towards her.
There was something rather horrifying about the fact that Karma's evil grin seemed to look a lot like Koro-sensei's grin.
'Wh-what are you doing?!' Amaya squeaked, her frown quickly fading from her face as the evil boy sat down on the table just in front of her.
'Nothing - But you need to drink this.' Karma drawled, holding a mug with a rather rich coloured liquid out to her.
She didn't grab it however - The moment that a very sweet, caramel kind of scent reached her nose, she recoiled away from it and actually shook her head frantically.
'No way - I ain't drinking that!' Amaya squeaked out.
Though oddly enough, Karma looked greatly amused by her response.
'You haven't even tried it.'
'I don't need to try it to know it's nothing but caramel and sugar!'
The evil in his eyes grew even stronger as he grabbed her by the wrist and forced her to grab the mug.
It was actually rather horrifying to find that the cup was rather cool to the touch.
'Drink it. Or I'll force it down your throat, Amay.' Karma told her, the most innocent and sweet smile across his face. 'You remember what happened last time, don't you?'
Immediately, Amaya felt like she'd been plunged into an ice-cold bath.
That wasn't just a threat - that was a whole-hearted promise he'd just made.
Frantically, Amaya ran through ideas and thoughts to get her out of this horrifying predicament, however the innocent smile remained across his face as he watched her without uttering a word.
The front door was locked of course, and despite the fact that she actually had the ability to outrun him if she really, really tried, his reflexes were better, especially when he was obviously expecting her to make a run for the door right now.
If only that damn door wasn't locked ... she might actually manage to escape.
'N-nooo thank you...' Amaya mumbled as she tried to push the mug back into Karma's hand, however he just continued to smile and pushed it back towards her.
'You don't have a choice.' Karma told her, his smile still in place. 'It's for your own good.'
She honestly had no idea how much he was enjoying this, but she was willing to bet that he was at least a little amused.
'Nothing that disgusting is for anyone's own good.' Amaya muttered, her head hung as she pushed the mug against Karma's hands even more.
'Reiko-chan would down it in a second.'
'Reiko would eat nothing but sugar if she could get away with it.' Amaya retorted with the roll of her eyes.
'Drink it.' Karma commanded her, that smile still in place.
'No.' Amaya retorted spoiltly, continuing to fight the mug of liquid suger.
'Amaya, drink it.'
'Hell no!' Amaya shot back, her tone still quite petulant.
The innocent smile melted away in an instant, and that evil look had appeared once again.
Amaya felt the colour drain from her face as he actually took the mug back and set it on the table as he rose to his feet.
'I warned you.' He told her, the evil grin still in place as Amaya realized she really should have just done as she was told.
The sound of her drowning gasps and choking screams were all that could be heard from the outside world as Karma did well on his promise to force the drink down her throat.
It was bad enough that even during the trip to school, Amaya's eyes were watering, and she felt horribly faint.
What made it worse was that Karma was obviously very pleased with himself - He was smirking the whole time, and wasn't the least bit bothered about the fact that Amaya was using him as a stable form to lean against while on the train while she wasn't so stable on her feet.
She seriously felt like she was going to hurl, right now.
Stupid, evil redhead with no conscience at all.
'Stop sulking, Amay.' Karma had remarked at one point, though he was still smirking at her as she turned her head to look up at him. 'It's your own fault for not listening in the first place.'
'Shut up...' Amaya mumbled, her hand clutching a handful of his jacket tightening as the train swayed with the lean of the tracks uncomfortably. 'What was the point of that disgusting stuff, anyway?'
'Does your arm still hurt?' Karma asked her, his smirk growing larger as Amaya blinked up at him in surprise.
'Actually no, now that you mention it.' Amaya responded thoughtfully, before she realized what he was getting at and glared at him. 'Hey! You could have just told me what the hell it was, damn it!'
'You're the one that assumed it was just sugar.' Karma responded.
Amaya huffed, turning her head away in preference of pouting childishly.
Why'd you bother making such a big deal out of it, anyway?' She muttered under her breath.
'I just felt like it.' Karma remarked, though his smirk had faded just a little.
She hadn't meant for him to hear her muttering complaint, but he did.
Amaya continued pout childishly as the train pulled into Kunugigaoka station.
Though she didn't bring it up again.
She made the decision that she was just going to sleep today.
God help whoever the hell decided to wake her up before the end of the day - She was going to murder whoever did.
Or at the very least make them regret waking her.
Amaya had caught sight of Maehara on the way to the trail leading up the mountain, standing at the front gate of the Academy with a girl whom she vaguely recognized, though from the distance she was from the two, Amaya had no way to figure out where.
They were talking, and oddly enough Amaya noticed they were holding hands - At least until Maehara seemed to bid her farewell with a short kiss, and begin to make his way up the trail to the classroom.
Her brow knit together as she put two and two together, turning her head back towards the trail as she realized she had slowed down in her thoughts, and Karma was beginning to leave her behind.
So Maehara had a girlfriend.
Interesting. A girl from the main building.
Amaya certainly wasn't going to mention this to anybody. It wasn't really any of her business anyway, and she remembered what Maehara had said about avoiding certain conversations in public.
She seriously doubted the relationship was really anything long-term to begin with, considering the way that the main campus tended to treat Class E.
She'd never really encountered any of the achievers from there to be all that polite.
She doubted that Asano Gakushuu was all that nice either, despite the way that he seemed to be rather courteous to her.
Not causing a problem, nor really saying all that much.
It was all sorts of fishy that had Amaya wonder if she should avoid people overall.
'You're so slow, Amay.' Karma drawled out as he looked at her over his shoulder, a smirk across his face as he appraised Amaya's rather faint looking form.
'I blame you.' Amaya grumbled as she readjusted her bag on her shoulder for a second. 'I seriously feel like I'm gonna pass out...'
'Eh? How am I responsible for that?' He questioned her, though he didn't sound concerned.
'I'm trying to figure that out.' Amaya muttered as she continued onwards, earning an amused shake of the head from Karma as he slowed to walk at equal stride with her.
'You'll tell me if you figure it out, I'm sure.' Karma remarked, causing Amaya to huff slightly in annoyance.
'Shut up.'
'Hmmm.' He hummed in thought, that smirk still in place. 'Nah, I don't really feel like it.'
'God, you're a Jerk.' Amaya grumbled as she readjusted her bag.
He just chuckled to himself, not really saying very much at all.
He seemed to be in a particularly good mood, and she couldn't figure out why.
About the most she could come up with was that he was a sadist, and forcing that huge mug of liquid sugar down her throat probably suited his sadistic side very well.
No, that was probably going to be the highlight of his day.
There probably wasn't any other reason why he was in such a good mood.
Most of their class was already inside by the time Amaya and Karma reached the top of the trail, and as Amaya squinted wearily over at the building, she noticed that most of those present were standing around the back corner of the classroom, just behind where Hara sat.
There also seemed to be this particularly large metal box there.
'Oi, Karma.' Amaya spoke up, looking up at the redhead who was particularly silent as he stared over at the classroom. 'What the hell is that?'
'Dunno ...' Karma seemed to think for a few seconds, his gaze remaining upon the metal box as the both of them continued towards the front door of the classroom. 'Maybe since our teacher's a giant Octopus, the Transfer Student's a box of cereal?'
Amaya immediately got the image of a giant pink fruit-loop wearing the girl's uniform with a Koro-sensei face in her head with stringy arms and legs, causing her to a fit of hysterical laughter.
What made the situation even better was the fact that Karma looked at her in surprise, and actually had to grab her by the elbow just to stop her from crashing to the rocky ground.
Because knowing Amaya's catastrophic luck, she'd probably punch herself in the face on the way down and knock herself out cold.
'What strange thought did you have?' Karma asked her suspiciously, watching her with a raised eyebrow as Amaya continued to laugh so hard she was becoming light headed.
Though thankfully her need to breathe had her eventually begin to regain her composure.
After about a minute of Karma staring at her with an exasperated frown, that was.
'Explain, now.' Karma commanded her once she'd managed to calm down enough to stand stable on her own two feet again, his exasperated frown growing stronger.
'Okay, seriously, it was a giant pink Fruit Loop dressed in the girl's uniform.' Amaya told him in answer. Karma just stared at her for a few seconds, his expression turning rather bemused as Amaya continued to giggle to herself.
'That's it?'
Amaya nodded her head, a little disappointed that Karma didn't find the image funny at all.
'It did have Koro-sensei's face on it.' Amaya sighed, disheartened as she turned to continue heading up to the classroom.
However Karma seemed to stand there for a few seconds, before a small chuckle escaped him.
'Okay, that's kinda funny.' He remarked as he began to follow her to the classroom.
'I'll draw a picture of it for you.'
'With what skills?' Karma questioned her with a taunting smirk. 'Even having opposable thumbs doesn't help when your drawings look like chicken-scratch.'
Amaya blinked in surprise, turning her head to frown at Karma.
'The hell does that mean?! I draw better than you can!' Amaya complained.
'You draw well for a cat, I admit.' Karma agreed.
Their bickering continued in a like manner all the way to the classroom door, where Karma slid it open to reveal a rather bemused atmosphere inside.
Okajima was slumped over his desk, muttering many things like 'The pretty girl is a lie' and 'Karasuma-sensei lied to me' with a despondent look across his face.
Nagisa, Sugino, Isogai and Maehara were standing at the front of the classroom with exasperated looks across their faces, while Okano, Hara and Yada stood in front of the giant metal box with rather disbelieving stares.
Kataoka and Kurahashi were also staring in a similar manner from another part of the classroom.
And various other students were ambling over to see what the giant box really was.
It was a mere two seconds later when a face suddenly appeared on a screen at the front of the metal box, that of a girl with pale purple hair and red eyes.
'Good Morning.' The girl in the metal box spoke, in a monotonous voice that conveyed no soul inside. 'I am the Autonomous Intelligence Fixed Artillery who will be joining your class.'
Amaya felt her brow furrow as she stared at the scene in front of her.
'Nice to meet you.' The girl in the box remarked, and then the screen suddenly went black.
'Awww, dammit!' Amaya sighed out as she began to make her way right past a thoroughly amused Karma to go slump at her desk.
Well, she'd called it about the bizarre nature of their newest student, but she certainly didn't expect a computer.
She wondered how long this new development would pan out like this, or even how long everyone would resist the urge to joke about it.
Amaya let out a sigh as she rest the side of her face on her desk, and closed her eyes.
'Hey, Karma-kun.' Isogai's voice echoed through the awkward murmuring of the others. 'Do you know what's wrong with Amaya-san?'
'She's kind of acting like Okajima-kun...' Nagisa spoke up this time.
'Ehh? She's fine, just a little disappointed, I guess.' Karma responded as he wandered over to where Nagisa and Sugino were.
She picked up on a rather distinct chuckle in the boy's voice.
'Why's she disappointed?' Maehara questioned curiously.
'Think she was hoping the new student was a box of cereal.' Karma responded in answer.
'Oi!' Amaya exclaimed as she threw herself upright, glaring over at Karma's snickering form over at Nagisa's desk. 'You're the jerk who put that thought in my head to begin with!'
'Amay.' Karma spoke up, burying his hands in his pockets as Amaya frowned at him. 'Go back to sleep, already.'
Amaya glared at him for a few seconds in silence.
'...Fine.' She muttered under her breath, before she slumped back over her desk and did as she was told.
Minutes passed as the few stragglers arrived, and before Amaya knew it, she'd clunked out entirely over her desk.
Nobody seemed to try and wake her up, it seemed - Possibly because everyone was now used to her habit of sleeping in class, or they might have tried to wake her up, but like Kataoka had mentioned yesterday afternoon, she tended to sleep like a log.
It felt like mere seconds since she'd set her head down on her desk, when the loudest, mechanical explosion of sounds burst into life, startling Amaya so bad she threw herself upright in her seat like she'd just been struck.
Her startled and disorientated gaze caught the tiniest glimpse of a classroom in chaos;
There were glimpses of Koro-sensei doing his Mach-Speed dodging, nearly all of her classmates were with their heads to their desks, their arms held over their faces to protect them from a hail of small little flecks of colour flying around the room so fast she couldn't seem to grasp what they were.
And then all of a sudden, something smacked Amaya right in the forehead so hard she actually gasped and tumbled backwards over her chair.
She landed with a hard crash on the floor, cracking the back of her head hard enough to have tears begin to well up in the corners of her eyes.
Amaya winced, a hand pressed to the throbbing pain in the centre of her forehead as she stared up at the ceiling above her head.
What she realized to be a full barrage of Anti-Sensei BB's were flying all around, ricocheting off of the walls back and forth until they lost their momentum.
All Amaya knew was that even if it was a ricocheting shot, it still hurt, like she'd just been shot point blank with one of those rather well-built air-guns they were using.
She still had no idea what the hell was even going on.
'Just stay down there until she stops, Maya-chan!' She heard someone tell her, though for the life of her, she couldn't quite hear anything more.
She was content to lie there where she wouldn't get shot in the face with an Anti-Sensei BB just for waking up.
It was a good couple of minutes before the shooting finally stopped, allowing Amaya to gingerly drag herself upright, her hand still to her pained head as she looked owlishly around her.
'I will be careful.' Came that emotionless voice belonging to the Giant Box in the corner of the room, causing Amaya to snap her gaze over immediately in shock. 'Preparing to attack.'
Sugaya and Hara gasped as they shrunk down in their seats a little more in response.
And then the screen began to show a scrolling display of green writing on a black background.
'Oh hell...' Amaya groaned out, watching in dismay as the whole front of the Giant Box began to glow like it was starting to level-up.
'Recalculating Trajectory. Correcting Angle.' The Autonomous Intelligence Fixed Artillery began to announce, causing Amaya to frantically glance around for a way out of this situation. 'Entering auto-evolution phase: 5/28/02.'
Amaya was about to make a dash for the door, however a hand to her shoulder stopped her from bolting - Karma, who'd noticed what she was about to do had grabbed her, giving her a very quick shake of the head before he let go of her.
'Stay there.' He told her, his gaze shifting straight up to the Giant Box as a heavy metal clanging echoed from it.
Amaya snapped her gaze over immediately to find that a set of guns had suddenly popped right out of the sides of the box.
'Holy hell - What is that?!' Amaya gasped out, however her words were drowned out by gunfire.
The hail of gunfire resumed, and Amaya realized she wouldn't have gotten half-way to the door before the giant box began her attack once again.
Amaya remained hidden behind her desk, her hands going over her ears as she sat through what felt like far too long, her eyes screwed shut as she tried to stop herself from flinching every time a BB managed to hit her.
But then all of a sudden the hail of gunfire stopped the very moment there was a familiar popping sound from the front of the classroom, and she heard everyone gasp.
Amaya dared to glance up at Karma for a second, to find that he was staring straight ahead, a somewhat perturbed look across his face.
So she leaned around her desk to look as well.
Koro-sensei stood with his left arm-tentacle raised, however one of his fingers had been blown off, with the blackboard at his back splattered with smoking yellow gloop.
Holy hell - The computer actually managed to injure Koro-sensei with a barrage of BB's like that?!
Amaya didn't hear anything that was said by the giant box armed with guns, however she did notice that Koro-sensei looked a bit too stunned.
Shocked, thoroughly taken by surprise.
It was obvious to Amaya that he was having a bit of trouble understanding that a mere machine had managed to get the better of him like that.
'Now, Koro-sensei.' The girl inside the giant box remarked, the same emotionless face upon the screen as before. 'Preparing to attack.'
Amaya was almost certain that the voice she spoke with this time held an edge of a smile.
